I want to make a small correction here, the LR300 is not a piston gun, its still using the stoner semi-direct impingement, but a modified version of it the designer called the 'Delayed Gas Impingement System' (DIGS). Basically the front of the gas key, which on a regular AR is fairly short and just covers the end of the gas tube, is massively extended and now sleeves over the gas tube and is in turn sleeved by the recoil spring which has been moved to the front instead of the buffer tube, the bolt is cut short and no longer projects into the (deleted) buffer tube when cycling, and the extended gas key never fully separates from the gas tube like a regular AR would. Allegedly the advantages of the design were to maintain better pressure during cycle with shorter barrelled setups (making it more reliable) and allowing a folding stock to be fitted for compactness.
@@thelastminuteman7513i think it is quite reliable. You can see the inspiration of the gas tube was taken in the 416. Shame the gun does not gain more recognition. I heard the same design is in the SIG MCX.
I said come in, don't stand there. You really should play these games Jonathan, they're amazing. I remember finding the L85 when I played the game for the first time, back when it came out. I'd never seen one of those before, but it looked cool and used a new caliber, so I picked it up. It jammed after the second mag, and ever since then, I only used it when I had absolutely no other choice. Back then I thought it was some balancing choice, since it's practically the first 5.56 gun you find. Only years later did I find out that they just faithfully recreated the original's mechanics, lol. And that’s not the only anecdote I have about guns in these games. I was playing modded Clear Sky, and I stumbled upon a 10mm 1911 with a funky triangular logo on the grip. Turned out to be a really fun gun, so I planned to read up on the IRL one... I made one of the early mods for STALKER: SoC (released on FilePlanet, if anyone remembers them) - a texture mod for the SA80 to take the bleedin' dust cover off the barrel (looking at that was driving me nuts) and give it a proper SUSAT reticle. I think I also increased the accuracy, because it was/is a reasonably accurate service rifle, despite its other deficiencies.

But an interesting bit nonetheless, that on the "SGI-5k" it aesthetically fits the best due to the fact that the 5040 was designed specifically for the SG 550.

Regarding chopping off the top sight of the MP5, that I believe that may be because pin hole or other small aperture sights don't work in 3D scenes which have been rendered via rasterization. At least not without a lot of shader work. Those types of sights rely on physics of light which is not properly modeled by rasterization resulting in them being almost unusable in video games.
@@Apocolypse88 the G-36 features very heavily in the later game stages, the F-2000 is kind of the "end game have it all" rifle that you can pick up towards the end of the game. Also STALKER was one of the very first (AFAIR) games to feature different types of ammo that had a different effect, would be cool to cover that bit as well.
F2000 and the VSS were pretty remarkable in how they outclassed pretty much every other rifle caliber weapon in the game, too. If we're going to bring up stuff like in-game differences in rate of degradation
Just some trivia: I've been playing Fallout 3 recently and got the Gauss rifle after the Anchorage DLC, which I never gotten before. It was so similar to Stalker Gauss rifle that it prompted me to do a little research. First time Gauss rifle featured in Fallout games was in 1998 Fallout 2, and the design of that original weapon is quite similar to the one seen throughout Stalker games. It even had a codename "M72", which could've inspired "Item 62". Although different Fallout games implemented various designs, Stalker's Gauss remained virtually untouched since SoC, keeping that slapdash lab prototype look which it was in Stalker universe, in contrast to Fallout Gauss which was factory produced in different countries and thus more refined.
Played this game when it first released, i was in cellege, it blew me away. It's crazy that I'm getting to play a sequel to it 17 years later and so cool to see a video of someone breaking down a video about it.
Jonathan is 100% correct about the Protecta - when the gun actually functions the way it's designed, the arduous reload makes it nearly impossible to get enough shots off in time to stop the second wave of Zone-mutated creatures coming after you.
I also like to see Jonathan react to the guns of Binary Domain, which is a cyberpunk game taking place in 2080 in Japan, and the weapons that the main character squad, the Rust crew, are equipped with are basically futurized version of modern guns. And the robots that you fight also have their own standard issue guns, there's also the underground Resistance, who built their own guns. The game was developed by the same people behind the Yakuza games. I would also like to see Jonathan take a look at the guns of Vanquish, a 3rd Person Shooter from Platinum Games, the weapons ranged from futuristic assault rifles, shotguns, LMGs and pistols to energy weapons that actually use the main character's suit energy to fire, too bad Vanquish didn't sell well enough to warrant a sequel, which is a huge shame since the ending is quite abrupt. For an April's Fools special, it would be nice to see Jonathan react to the guns of Plant vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, eventhough only the zombie characters carry guns. Or maybe Advance Wars 1 and 2 reboot on the Switch since they 3D models carry guns that can easily made out, perhaps get Fam over at The Tank Museum to do a reaction on them too. For the laughs mostly.
The fun fact about the EM1 is that IIRC it does fire little artifact bits. But it's true STALKER is pretty tame on the idea of those things defying the laws of physics when you think on how they use them most of the time.
3:21 The AN94 absolutely does model the 2 round hyper-burst mode in the game on the Obokan rifles. It's the main reason they were always my favorite in the vanilla games. Thinking you probably should have played the game!
If we're talking older Eurojank shooters, I recommend E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy. It's from the same guys who did Necromunda: Hired Gun and it has some wild weapons like an smg with a BAR style fire selector for "full auto" and "fuller auto".
About the real life Groza Jonathan was carrying: I know that the Groza can be chambered in 9x39mm, and it normally uses its own curved proprietary mags, but the one Jonathan has looks like it's using a straight mag from a 9A-91/VSK-94. I'll need to do some research about this later. *EDIT* Just saw the Forgotten Weapons video on the Groza, where Ian McCollum was literally at Royal Armories using the same Groza Jonathan was, and yes, later iterations of the 9x39 Groza used 9A-91/VSK-94 mags; the curved proprietary mags I mentioned were issued with earlier versions, but the Groza can supposedly use both interchangeably.
Where is the new episode, Jonathan Ferguson; the keeper of firearms and artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK, which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history???
3:35 - AN-94 absolutelly has "hyper-bust" in game, unlike other weapons in the game in configuration it has 2 separate values for rate of fire (all the rest of the guns have 1). By default I believe in game they are set very similar, something like 600 and 700 (maybe 800, so the difference is not really noticeable), but that could be modified to represent "hyper-burst", one can set the second rate of fire which only applies to that 2-round burst mode to be something like 1800. So inherently the game is developed with capability to do it. Also I would note - anyone who ever played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. would have modified gun names, one of the earliest mod to the game was "text-update", especially because English version of the game had all sorts of mistakes in it... and almost nobody plays this game unmodified (except of recent console release), so this sort of "QOL" mod is really first thing everyone does and then weapon names are all correct. That said probably second mod is texture pack and weapons mods, and that instantly replaces all weapon models to nearly perfectly correct ones and removed the mirroring (which is just weird quirk of games from that period - Counter Strike also had weapons mirrored, I assume it is also for legal reasons). 5:36 - not quite... more like 30 years ago, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is 17 years old game.
I also recall the AN-94 having a burst mode in the game, also wasn't there a modified version with super fast rate of fire in one of the storyline stashes under Agroprom?
@@AA30996502 I said that... I am not criticizing this video for looking at the original game. I am just saying - yes there is hyper-burst on AN94... yes the names are wrong (although they they were correct in beta game and in game files), so it is correct to say they were changed for legal reasons, but can be changed back easily by user.
Just some context about CS guns being mirrored. Gooseman, the main developer of the original mod, was left handed and animated the Counter-Strike weapons with left-handed operation as that is more natural for him
In case anyone wonders why you'd cut off the top of the front sight protector/hood: When you use a low profile red dot sight on the MP5, the dot ends up being projected right on that part of the sight hood. Cutting it off improves the sight picture through red dots, holographic sights and etched reticle optics. This is a universal thing across the entire family of the G3, HK33, MP5 and their derivatives
Hey Johnathan and GameSpot, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is legendary and I'm glad you guys covered it, but as a dedicated fan of this game I must say, you missed a LOT. Not only some of the guns in the original games, but also each S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series entry has it's own host of mods that entirely change the guns, making them more realistic, reanimating them, and remodeling them. Check out some of these mods because they contain amazing content that was passionately made by fans of this series just out of pure enjoyment, and it's very clear that they are a labor of love. The Gunslinger mod for Call of Pripyat is a good place to start. Much love from the Zone.
If Jonathan is reading this, the zone nose very isolated from the rest of the world (your suspicion of the 550 being new to the zone specifically is correct) and there are also gunsmith that can do and have made things that wouldn't normally fit, fit. Up to and including a spas12 being rifled for more accurate slugs (losing buckshot use) a desert eagle firing a rifle calibre and 5.56mm nato guns using the Russian equivalent.
But not that isolated. Big factions can get weapons from outside quite easily. The modded guns are mostly from the Free Stalkers as their links to outside are not as robust
I bet you know it, the name "Tunder S14" was chosen so it sounds close to the original name in russian. Tunder, or, I guess, tHunder will be "grom" and the real name "groza" means "storm". So, in russian grom and groza are very close in spelling, sounding and meaning (thunder and storm accordingly)
Loved playing STALKER back in the day - it has a vicious learning curve. Do not be discouraged by its difficulty. You'll be a master of the Zone in no time! CHEEKY BREEKY!!!

Finally, I been wanting him to look at this game series for a bit. I haven't played those games in a bit, but with how many hours I've played I know there are still more guns to explore. Can't wait to see the next game.
The reason the guns in the Stalker series eject to the left and are close models is so that GSC wouldn't have to pay to use licensed* material. It's why some games use car models that are recognizable but change the name. *Not sure if licensed is the right word I'm looking for, but you get the point.
Isn't the "left side" thing common in a lot of older games just because it's cooler to see the animation of ejecting shells while shooting? Unsure it makes a difference in terms of legality

3:25 In Shadow of Chernobyl, the AN-94 does have a 2 and I believe 3 shot burst mode, with most of the weapons being able to switch fire modes. By default that should be the 9 or 0 key to toggle fire modes.
Awesome. My absolute favorite shooter games absolutely deserved this examination and Dave delivered a great selection of guns for commentary and Jonathan once again made me appreciate or see games I love in a deeper way.
Oh, such a shame, I was brimming with anticipation when I saw the thumbnail, because I was hoping to see a Fort showcase. "Fora" is secretly the most lethal gun in the game at level 3, it has no spread and the game turns into Counter Strike.
I don't have anything witty or poignant to say, so I'll just comment that this series is basically singlehandedly propping up Gamespot. And I'm loving each entry
This is one of the first episodes I've ever seen from this series where they don't have MOST OF the guns in the game they're talking about. I guess this game has added to the wishlist for the collection!
14:11 it is caused by engine limitations. There may be maximum of 64 bones which is not enough to animate the whole belt so it's the best way to hide this issue while keeping the giggling
This brought back memories, I spent a ton of time in the original game. I liked that the guns wore out with use, and because you couldn't repair them (or I don't think you could if memory serves correctly) it was always super exciting if you found a really good gun that was also in good condition. Plus the fact a lot of the guns in this were slightly oddball things you didn't see in a bunch of other games at the time was pretty cool.
Long-time modder for STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl here! The reason the weapons in the game are left-hand operation is because it was easier to animate them that way. Rather than having to switch the model fully off-axis to complete a reload animation, Strelok just reaches over with his left hand and cycles the charging handle on the left side of the weapon. As far as I know, the models were created right-handed then flipped, which is why the AN-94 looks especially weird and a number of them have backward text stamped on them.
I'm surprised there was no mention of how all of the pistols in the game (at least to my memory it was all of them, the Fort-12 and the Makarovs definitely have this issue) have dual ejection ports on either side, but only eject out of the left one for some reason. I always assumed they did it like that because it takes less time to just mirror a model you're working on, plus the UV maps take up less real estate so you can have somewhat more high resolution textures, but normally devs would try to hide that, but the STALKER devs just kinda... didn't? You can clearly see it during the reload animations lol. Love the STALKER series, but yeeeah, weapon mods are a must for me tbh.
Hey, from a game from 2005, this was mindblowing accurate, back then we didn't had the extremely accurate gun models we have today, man I love this game so much.
Interesting design note about the Fort12, it was designed in collaboration with CZ UB that also makes the CZ75. It wasnt a CZ75 clone though. But the CZ PCR is aesthetically pretty similar, although design wise its completely different.
Love this series, CoP will always sit in my heart as one of the best action RPG style games. I'm cautiously optimistic about the sequel. I really hope they manage to make a worthy continuation.

I wonder how reliable it really is. It's an interesting set up. It's a shame a more accessible company hasn't used the same idea.
@@thelastminuteman7513i think it is quite reliable. You can see the inspiration of the gas tube was taken in the 416.
Shame the gun does not gain more recognition. I heard the same design is in the SIG MCX.
also saying "makarov PB" isn't correct since PB was designed by Deryagin

A day later, what do I find in my YT subscriptions? A Forgotten Weapons video titled "10mm is the Best Millimeter: the Colt Delta Elite". That's some Zone fuckery right there.

15:45 As a Swiss guy I can confirm that the SIG550 grenade launcher looks to be correct from what I can see (except maybe length). It basically replaces the bottom part of the handguard.
Yeah, somewhat correct, but looks kind of wrong here. Been a while since my time in the military though.
Fun fact: the GL on the SG 550 is actually the GL modeleled after the SIG GL 5040. In the game they named it M203, leading to a lot of confusion lol. But an interesting bit nonetheless, that on the "SGI-5k" it aesthetically fits the best due to the fact that the 5040 was designed specifically for the SG 550.
Hey gamespot, you do realize Dave Jewitt is the one reason for the heavy traffic to your channel every Weekends right? He and Jonathan Ferguson carried your channel. I could've easily gone to any and many of the other gaming channels for trailers but I stuck to gamespot because of Dave's contribution and hardwork on the Firearms Expert React series... and you people have the gull to fire the man who made your channel popular?
Even if this series were to continue it wouldn't be the same without Dave...
So the guy that’s kept your channel relevant these last handful of years ….. you fired them?
Brain dead move
Why no F-2000 and actual G-36?
good question. not sure what year the game is supposed to take place, but maybe they weren't common yet. 🤔
@@Apocolypse88 both of those are in all three games as some of the best guns you can get
@@Apocolypse88 the G-36 features very heavily in the later game stages, the F-2000 is kind of the "end game have it all" rifle that you can pick up towards the end of the game. There are several guns in the game(s) they didn't talk about (the "full" SVD, the VSS Vintorez which is an absolute legend in the franchise, the AS VAL, just to name a few), hopefully will do in part 2 or 3, as there were 3 games in the series and the later ones feature modifications and upgrades, this video only covered some guns from the very first game. Also STALKER was one of the very first (AFAIR) games to feature different types of ammo that had a different effect, would be cool to cover that bit as well.
@@KNURKonesur By different ammo effects you mean something like fallout 1 and 2 ammo types like AP and HP ammo?
Jonathan has been such a gift to the channel and gun community, I love him.
I would absolutely gorb myself if you guys made a video on the guns of Cruelty Squad
gauss rifle (EM1) is powered by artefacts IIRC, basically a big ol' physics breaker.

A friend shot his AR with a muzzle cover in place, and it not only blew off, but also turned inside out.

@@KNURKonesur That was the "Fast-shooting Akm 74/2", so really an AKS-74.
But like the game has them that way. A mod in the game is not the stalker game and what was intended
Gooseman, the main developer of the original mod, was left handed and animated the Counter-Strike weapons with left-handed operation as that is more natural for him
Absolute braindead move firing Dave. You'll sink like IGN.
We'll miss you Dave, Wont be the same without you!
Tbf a lot of these mods just use models and/or animations from other games (typically Tarkov), so he could just cover these games directly instead
I've played these games a lot but I never noticed the left handed cocking handles and ejection ports until you mentioned it.

The release date (hopefully final) of S2 is set 2 days after my birthday.
