    For those unfamiliar with the jargon, a "howitzer" is an artillery piece that can fire direct fire, indirect fire or even arcing fire, like a mortar. This is very useful for firing over hills and mountains and other large obstacles.

    • @dra6o0n

      Can you explain the difference between direct and indirect fire? Is direct aimed at a specific target kind of like a sniper rifle whereas indirect is more of a supportive fire in the direction of your enemy and - to continue the analogy - more like a shotgun blast (ie aim in the general direction and pull the trigger but high precision not the goal)?

    • @vigilante8374
      @vigilante8374 Год назад +1

      @@dra6o0n Incorrect. We do indeed have hundreds of thousands of TOW missiles, and tens of millions (possibly HUNDREDS of millions) of 25mm, which is used by practically every military branch in many NATO countries (on boats, on aircraft, etc.) 25mm comes in armor piercing and high explosive variants, and the Bradley has separate feeds for both types.
      Yes precision long range weapons are great, HIMARS and Excalibur shells have been a real game changer, but they are expensive, we don't have a massive amount of them, they're not a replacement for tactical-level weapons and they're not great for dislodging or routing hundreds of thousands of entrenched troops. Compare: threatening to encircle a BTG with dozens of Bradleys WOULD cause a route.
      Yes I was exaggerating the timeframe slightly, but not by much. We could train and transport in 60-90 days if we cared. It's nowhere near as difficult to train or set up logistically as compared to something like an M1 or, heaven forbid, F-16.
      I'm all for giving Ukraine ATACMS but it's more important to give them the ground power to physically push out Russia. Have you seen how Ukrainians fight? They are using/abusing Hummers, Australian Bushmasters (not to be confused with the 25mm Bushmaster autocannon), and other various MRAPS as glorified technicals. Even without considering the TOW missiles, the Bradley's 25mm autocannon is MUCH more powerful, long range and accurate than the .50 machine guns they're currently using.
      It's not just more effective, it's also likely very cost-effective to give Ukraine Bradleys. They're not an expensive platform (the TOWs aren't super cheap, but they're cheaper than Javelins and they can use 25mm to destroy anything short of a T-72. Actually, 25mm even has a few T-72 kills in Iraq; it can be effective if you're firing at its side armor at close ranges.)

      but the fancy semi-automated mobile howitzers Germany provided were put out of use after little time because they were too maintenance-heavy and wouldn't hold up under combat stress.

      @@Alblaka Sometimes you should think before you write something. The mobile Howitzers have not been taken out of service, but are only being maintained and Germany has not managed to deliver enough spare parts in time (Political Failure or Failure of the Defense Agency). When a howitzer fires over 300 shells a day, wear and tear is completely normal and every device then needs maintenance. However, a German maintenance center is currently being built in Slovakia, so let's hope that the equipment can be used efficiently again soon. Apart from that, "fancy" mobile artillery can be used tactically quite differently from stationary artillery (aggressive) and offers much more safety for the crew.

      Now, for the most part, i blame the American elite, I'm almost certain there is many Americans who are against the shit their government is doing and kudos to them for thinking for themselves and seeing reality for what it is, though, I'm unsure if you're one of the decent Americans or not, it's a given that Americans were drafted/forced to fight in Vietnam, so just maybe, you are on the good side, but given you're here tuning into some Ukrainian propaganda bullshit about the M777 changing the course of the war and worse, on the front and the region that Ukraine has been shelling and killing innocent people since 2014! I would suspect you both support Ukraine's fight and America interfering once again, but hey, just maybe you're not that stupid and I'm wrong about you, just maybe you're able to see the reality of the situation and how Ukraine has not just innocently found itself subject to unjustified Russian aggression, cause, it is justified, just like America was justified when Russia tried placing nuclear weapons in Cuba, though, America has an agenda in Ukraine, this is very apparent and is why one can track and follow how they've interfered there now and to the lead up of hostilities in 2014, thankfully more Americans are waking up to the truth everyday, though still, unfortunately not enough to stop the elites from terrorizing others for a profit or like in the middle east, for a stake of control of said countries natural resources.

It is also completed in the US. BAE has a history of buying manufacturers. They bought the American subsidiary in 2005. Why the US Congress allows BAE to buy parts of the US military industrial base when they have broken agreements and transferred some of our technology to the bad guys is beyond me. FIDO.

    As an 8 year Army veteran & ex-19kilo tanker I can say I have nothing but respect for all the combat arms. We have inter branch rivalries but truth be told its combined arms that win wars. Tanks can’t win it alone nor can infantry or artillery. As a tanker we offer serious direct fire firepower. Infantry hump it & must be tough as nails & courageous. Artillery is utterly devastating and can destroy an enemy’s morale. Also air defense & air support are vital to the modern battlefield. However, we cannot do any fighting without supplies & logistics or full bellies so kudos to all those who support the combat arms. I was friends with several 13B Gun bunnies - maybe they changed the artillery MOS designation as I have been out for several years - and they are true soldiers & pros. Glad these arty pieces are helping the Ukrainians turn the tide of war because for a minute there was doom and gloom talk that the Russian military would overrun Ukraine. However, as we all know, defenders can have an advantage over invaders especially when an army & peoples are motivated to fight for their homeland, freedom & each other against a mostly conscripted military that ostensibly doesn’t want to even be there.
