I love both versions. They have their own styles to them. Jack's version sounds more raw and heavy, with deeper but simpler drums, and really heavy guitar playing, and pretty intense vocals. Tegan and Sara's version is more laid back and much less intense, and both fit their styles perfectly.

Jack White is probably my favorite artist of all time. I love the way all his music sounds. I have nothing against Tegan and Sara, but The White Stripes did it better.

Tegan and Sara's version is amazing, but this is still a great cover.
It's because Jack plays the tonic with a major third rather than a minor third (like tegan and sara). It's a far more interesting choice of chord, albeit a pretty dissonant one because the major third is a chromatic interval (meaning it is not in the key). This means that, objectively, you are correct; Tegan and Sara's version does, in fact, sound "better." I still like this version more, though.
It’s always more interesting to choose the ‘wrong’ chord, theoretically speaking, in my opinion...

I never really learned music theory. I can usually get where I need to be but I'm going to spend an hour comparing the two songs and researching chromatic intervals. Very interesting stuff.
And FWIW I like this version better but the White Stripes were special and they usually get my vote.

I guess it's because I'm more familiar with The White Stripes and have only been seriously listening to Tegan and Sara for a couple of years, but I overwhelmingly prefer this version to the original. I just think lyrically, Jack handles it better than Sara. It doesn't seem written to suit Tegan and Sara.

This does sound wierd when you hear Tegan & Sara's first like I have. But I like Jack White too much to complain :)
The Tegan & Sara original is great, but I like this cover, too. It's really got that White Stripes rawness about it. It's like Tegan & Sara made the craft, but Jack White's fingerprints are all over it (and Meg White's just sorta...I dunno...there).
I don't like her voice all that much honestly :/
