    Agreed. Arthur moves much too slow. The control feels a bit laggy, especially turning around and jumping. Firing your weapons feels slower somehow. Everything looks like a marionette. If I wanted that I'd play Earnest Evans.

      Yeah this game is a true test of skill. It takes everything the series is known for and amplifies it in excess which I appreciate even if I’m not able to play it very well.
      The graphics are great too I think the aesthetic fits GnG and there’s some great use of hand drawn effects like the metallic sheen on armors it’s done really well.

    I'm going to pick this up for sure. I understand your nostalgic connection to it but let me tell you. Although I'm a huge fan of the NES & SNES I have NEVER played Super Ghouls N Ghosts until literally this month! I'm 37 years old. I decided i was gonna just sit down and play through it. And let me tell you, i LOVED it! Just the perfect amount of challenge and "doability". The fact you can retry infinitely really helps keep the gameplay loop addicting. It really holds up all these years later. I'm looking forward to this new one too and the art style looks great to me, not having that nostalgic connection to it. It really reminds me of Monty Python or the game "Salt & Sanctuary" which i really recommend by the way... Turns out S&S is quite similar to Ghouls N Ghosts/Goblins. Anyway thanks as always for your review ✌️

    I would say one of the most frustrating trends of the last decade has been games highly influenced by retro classics (or sequels to retro classics) embracing cheap 3d models instead of going that extra distance for high quality sprites.
    It's stopped me enjoying quite a few games like this, Megaman 11 and Bloodstained because I just can't get over how cheap they look. I know that games are expensive to make and ultimately it's a lot easier to just use an existing tool set but sprites just age so nicely compared.

      @PogueSquadron 3 года назад

      @@WoollyMittens I feel like the potential is there if done right, and it can kind of mimic these giant sprites that we saw back in the retro days, since those also had kind of a "paper doll effect." The problem here I think is that the style is just too hit or miss. I think it looks great at times, but when it falters it kind of stands out.

      Bloodstained looks great, backgrounds and character models, I couldnt disagree with that one more. This is exactly why I enjoy Johnny's channel, he's not afraid to call these games out before we doll out our hard earned cash. These animated throwbacks are a terrible attempt at recreating originals. They did the exact same thing with the Battletoads reboot which was also majorly disappointing. Even worse is when they take popular classic genres like Contra and Castlevania then tarnish them with flops like Contra: Rogue Corps and Castlevania: Judgement as an attempt to capitalize off the culture.

    • @angelpacheco1608
      @angelpacheco1608 3 года назад

      To be fair, I think this game captures the gameplay spirit of the original games way better then the new Battletoads did.
      It just seems like the artstyle put him off really hard. Which affected his view on other aspects of the game.
      Like he criticized the gameplay for feeling sluggish but it's like he forgot how slow the original GnG games felt at times too. It's not a Megaman X game after all. Never was.
      And the art looks fine to me. And I am just glad a new game even happened from this series with gameplay that's close in spirit to the originals, so I am going to buy this.

    It would be cool if they went all out and made a maximo game or a true sequel to ghouls & ghosts in the RE engine. Still arcade-y fun but with insane top tier graphics. That really was a factor of why the originals were so good. Simply the best graphics at the time.

    What i do want to see in further future of Ghosts'N Goblins game?
    i want to see a story based on the Firebrand and the demons that you
    encounter in the game and a Story dialogue that features an RPG well
    based Adventure with a lot of elements.
    For example: Firebrand fights you in-between stages if you encounter him
    long enough to see where it takes you deep within the story and you fight
    different kinds of Firebrands and much more. Giving Ghosts'N Goblins a much
    well deserve needed fresh experience for younger players to be able to play and
    understand how difficult modes work in further detail as they gain added lessons
    to get into the retro games.
    But that's just my opinion.

    I don't understand the complaints at all personally. I do think Arthur moves a little slow when running in the game, but that's fine. Arthur never was very fast in any of the games. Any controlling problems I have is because the Switch d-pad is absolute garbage that doesn't work for games like this where each directional input is so crucial. Some areas of the game and most of the monsters look absolutely amazing, especially when animated. To me it's like those old sprites are brought to full life in this game. And then there's the difficulty, holy cow they went to town with this one. I can beat the first one on NES without dying no problem, but this one just tore me a new one. It's almost too much at times, but I like it.

  • @futureskeletons66669
    @futureskeletons66669 Год назад +1

    I get that your experience of the series is Super Ghouls and the inclusion of the double jump, but had your primary experience been the arcade games, this review would've been very different. There is no lag. Arthur runs as he did in the original arcade game. And to say it looks like a Flash game like so many have, is ridiculous. The sprites are beautifully hand drawn and animated. I think had they made it with pixel art it would've have looked like just another pixel art indie game. Those already exist and likely the reason this game was produced. There are pixel art homages to G'nG already - Madeline etc, so why would Capcom do that when others already have?
    I used to be able to complete the arcade game when I was 11 in 1985. When I played it I'd often have a crowd 20 deep surrounding the cabinet (not a boast, it was terrifying) and this is fantastic. To me the console versions are bastardisations adjusted for home play and this is true to the core experience they have been based upon.
    The hate is completely unwarranted. This is actually a genius game, it's so cleverly conceived and plays on the difficulty associated with the series, beautifully. If there is a way this game will sneak up on you and fuck you, it will. You have to expect to be merked at every opportunity, the devs have squeezed so much into it. It's such a clever, witty game and you can tell it was made with love for the series.

    I think it's one of those situations that in essence it's great that we get a new entry in a very beloved old school video game series, but it sounds like the people that made the game just made an above passable effort with regards to the product they put out there. I think they could of done more but its pretty obvious they did just enough to make it somewhat playable. Still its another chance for an old license to live for a new generation of players and something for the old generation to enjoy, but if the game doesn't make a profit then it might be the very last time we see a solo ghost and goblins game, but maybe that might give the game company a little more motivation to put out a better product when it comes to reestablishing an old license.

    I mean yeah looking at the game it’s worth noting the jumping mechanics do look abit of a challenge to handle but I love the art style it looks fresh and modern not taking anything away from the original of course different time different technology I get that. Now I will say this tho as much as I really enjoy peoples reviews as they’ve helped me decide if I should get games or not but I do have a slight issue with people who’ve played past games in a series practically to death and when a reboot remaster etc which maybe has different art style different level designs or in some cases like crash n sane trilogy where yes they have actors that have been in crash games but didn’t voice the original crash cast. Anyway it just seems to me that they expect the same game the same gameplay mechanics as past games have had. Which simply isn’t the case every time

But after playing for a while I feel like I got used to the controls and it's actually a pretty decent game worth playing. I would say that although this is the most 'accessible' GnG it's also the most brutal at the same time. The Mexican Runner is actually doing a pretty great job of kicking this games ass right now.
