I remember when people would diss me because my tank wasn't pretty enough because there is algae all across the back and side walls (I clean it off of the front) but at the same time they wouldn't believe me that my heavily stocked tank shows very little nitrate. Even though I kind of like the look of natural algae as long as it does not obscure the view. Algae is wonderful. For certain fish it is a source of food and it is one of the most natural filters you can have.
I just bought two the lights, and let me tell you the lights rock being water proof works great for my setup. All ready have great growth on my diy scrubber
I ordered this algae scrubber from the Expressions LTD website, it arrived very quickly, I was amazed at the build quality, great product. I have had it up and running on my 120 gallon aquarium for only 1 week now. I have not produced any algae yet, but it's a new tank, new water, and has only had water in it running 2 weeks now. I have one video showing the scrubber on here. I am very pleased with the product so far! I will post update videos when I have some growth.
I read your information that alga grown in the scrubber is cladophora "angel hair" seaweed. That alga looks exactly like Ulva Intestinalis (Also known as Gutweed, Sea Grass, Sea Hair, & it's previous name, Enteromorpha intestinalis). It naturally grows near the surface of the water across shorelines, places such as concrete and/or rock jetties near the beach, among other various places around the world. It's texture looks similar to other varieties of Ulva, like Ulva Sp. (Sea lettuce) accept that "Ulva Intestinalis" grows long ribbon like tubular fronds just like produced by your scrubber. With all this said, I wanted to ask you if the scrubber can be seeded with a specific seaweed? Coincidently, I have been reading on amazing health benefits it has for humans and well as sea dwelling herbivores. Here is an article I just wrote about it, if you are interested, on my following FB page: facebook.com/thecoralproject/posts/1279492625517020
So has this entirely replaced your filtration media all together in the tank? Do you think this would work just as well in a fresh water aquarium, this is fascinating!
I have a Chaeto problem. At first it grows well, but then tiny bits of it turn white & die. I have bright lights that I run all day & fairly stable salinity. I do not have any animals yet, but I am dosing 2 drops of Excel Flourish each day. I don't if it maybe grows until it exceeds the amount of fertilizer available, then starts to die?? I also have 1 small live rock w/ Coralline algae & diatoms on it in the system.
such a great set up - what do you do with the algae? why not feed your tang with it?? I had a dream system like this all planned when i was 15 years old - around 1980 - i was super into it .... though I had only a 75 or 80 gallon tank
Great video. I like reading a lot about it (ATS, DSB, and natural filtering systems) and I always thought that this was possible. Do you keep a reverse photoperiod?. What do you think about complement the system with a RDSB? Greetings
guy, I have tried a lot of method to export nutrition out of my tank (protein skimmer, chaeto, GFO,.....). The only thing that works and does no damage to my coral and fish is only algae scrubber. Chaeto will work in term of bringing down the nitrate and the phosphate to near zero, but the chaeto cannot compete with GHA. GFO actually kill my corals by stripping all the nutrition out of the water column. I employed an army of snail and crab to eat the GHA. The crabs end up going after my coral instead of doing their duty. The snail basically doing nothing. Skimmer also kill my corals or leave the tank look dirty (yes, you can over skim and, as the result, kill your corals...) The only that removes all the nutrition and at the same time leave some behind for the coral is only algae scrubber, and it will also out compete GHA Now, my display tank has no trace of GHA or dino or diatom .... You should try this method once, it actually works very well Beware though, it took 3 months after the installation of the scrubber for the GHA to disappear completely.
Nice video..pretty inspiring. I have a few questions though.....what nutrients exactly do you feed into the tank to produce this much algae? What kind of LED lights are in use here and do you know the light frequency at all? Do you know the strain of algae growing on the scrubber? Lastly, is the scrubber mesh material an ordinary plastic material? Cheers
+Dex I may not be the owner of the video, but I can provide at least one answer if you'd like. The scrubber material looked like regular plastic, probably meant for cross-stitch patterns. You can buy it at most craft stores, and can likely find it for a low price online.
Great video. Do you by chance remember what your nitrate levels started at, and then went down to? My two LED's from you guys are expected to be here tomorrow. Thanks!
I just setup a algae scrubber similar to yours today is day two and I have detectable levels of nitrates, pretty sure I'm around 5-10 ppm. Will come back here and update you guys if my nitrates drop from the algae scrubber. Oh yea very cool design btw and nice documentation of algae growth Thank you.
Wow your collections are insane. and amazing transformation from green in DT to non. I just built mine. I couldn't tell in the video, did your scrubber started with brown patches or it went straight to green? mine so far after 8 days completely brown and I think it should turn green as next stage. did yours do that?
So the algae build up by itself or you have to put some algae in there, if so which one? In refugiums, for example, macroalgae is used. Let me know. Thank you.
No, the protein skimmer was still pulling out plenty... but much of that is food and nutrients that I wanted to leave cycling for constant feeding. In any case, the system has thrived and been very stable without the skimmer, which I sold for $250 of the $300 I bought it for!
Expressions-LTD That's great. Crikey, I've just noticed when I first commented - 10 months has flown by! I've just revisited this video and noticed you tried an upflow design a couple of years ago. How do the upflow design and the design in this video compare performance wise?
I have been doing some research on algae scrubbers. People are saying its a ticking time bomb. How long has yours been running? Any spikes yet? I have always had a small hair algae problem and want to rid it all together. Im wondering if the LFS wants to keep selling products to mask the problems.
So i have mine running now. it seems similar in flow as his. The only difference is my lights arent covered inside a dark place. its been about a week and havent really gotten much growth. I have lights on about 16 hours. Too much?
I dont understand cleaning VS harvest , what are you doing on cleaning days. I just harvest by scraping like you but i do that every week and i always have the slim type algae not the turf that you were growing....??
This was can literally strip your tank of nitrate and phosphates. It's a must if you have a crowded tank and over feed. Leaving some nitrates and phosphates is a good idea as inhabitants do utilize them.
what are the led's and where can I get them...they look red really great vid with heaps of info...what are the dimensions ...can you email to me once again great vid
The URL to buy the lights is now added above in the product description. An online forum like algaescrubber.net is a good place to start if you need information about building your own scrubber box.
Team Expressions Just ordered 2 lights up here in Canada, was hoping to find a promo code somewhere, would like to buy 2 more later on. Awesome video, any updates?
+Omy Nunu I believe that was an indication of a lack of food for the algae. If you notice, he upped the food a few times throughout the video, and afterwards the algae population in his scrubber began to recover and green back up.
@@Hijiinx_ what do you mean by food for the algae?....algae use light and nutrients as its "food source" I think what you mean is that he was feeding the inhabitants in his tank like fish crabs ect. more blocks of frozen food and by over feeding the tank the ammonia, nitrates ect. aka fish waste gets taken up/used by the algae as a "food source" and the more food it has the more green it will be. Basically the more you feed the fish in the tank the more waste they produce which the algae uses as fertilizer....if you don't provide fertilizer and light to plants they will turn yellow, brown then die, so I think when in the video he states he was feeding more blocks it was blocks of frozen food for the fish
Wait so what about biological and mechanical filteration? Is that already covered by the algae scrubber? Like housing the beneficial bacteria and all that? Sorry, I'm a bit new to this hobby.
Beneficial bacteria exists in the porosities of the rock and literarily everywhere where there's water in the tank including and probably most prolific in the sand. In terms of mechanical, there isn't a need. Theoretically, solids are allowed to break down into nutrients which are consumed by the tank inhabitants or the scrubber itself. If done and maintained properly, algae scrubbbers can eliminate equipment. Hope that helps.
Really seems algae "scrubbers" like this are actually just giving algae a good place to grow. The organism will still reproduce leaving minute algae taking any place available to grow besides the highly lighted location.
I just don't understand. Because I have 90 gallows saltwater tank and I never had a hair algae issue such as you showed before using this Algae Scrubber. Were you using GFO and Carbon before using this algae scrubber? And were you making your own saltwater for water changes?
LUCIANO LEITE a uv light would kill the algae thus removing any benefits and still requires a lot of cleaning, this scrubber keeps the algae live and happy in a controlled environment away from his display
Some fish may eat it... but no, it's working as a natural filter. The algae grows on the screen and absorbs excess nutrients out of the water, filtering it. You then 'harvest' the algae by scraping it off and throwing it away. There's way more information than can fit in a reply here, so if interested go take a look at some of the ATS forums such as algaescrubber.net
+Expressions-LTD My algae is now staying on the yellow to light in color. Does not have much green in it anymore, Clean it every 10 to 14 days now. So does that mean I can take my gfo and carbon out? Scubaleny@gmail.com

right this makes sense for smaller tanks, but if you have larger tanks, a shallow wallet and are limited on time you can dedicate to tank maintenance....not having to do large water changes and pay for salt and take the time to mix it is really beneficial. You have a decent size tank so every week you have to change roughly 18 gallons a week on your tank. This scrubber method seems like a decent idea, but does anyone know how it holds up after years of use? THIS IS AN AMAZING VIDEO! What a great experiment. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Man... scraping that algae must feel satisfying
This is impressive! I am just now hearing about an algae scrubber... It is so common sense, thanks for the video.
Thanks for making this video I was wondering how well these actually work and how fast. Now I know! Looks like I am making one now...
very impressed man. Nice job keeping the video log and posting it. So much better than word is proof. Thanks for taking the time
I just bought two the lights, and let me tell you the lights rock being water proof works great for my setup. All ready have great growth on my diy scrubber

This is very helpful tip for everyone! awesome job sir.
Wow! Can't argue with great results!
Make a build tutorial on your scrubber it would help me out a ton

So has this entirely replaced your filtration media all together in the tank? Do you think this would work just as well in a fresh water aquarium, this is fascinating!

how often do you do water changes now if any
DAVID RIVERA yes would love this answer plz!
please let me know. gonna keep on scrolling through to see if this has been answered.
How about water changes? How often do you do one? Is there any impact on elements?

nice video... congratulations !
So the algae build up by itself or you have to put some algae in there, if so which one? In refugiums, for example, macroalgae is used. Let me know. Thank you.
How did the parameters change when you installed the scrubber? (Nitrate and phosphate) and how are your parameters now?
those algae looks like my favorite dried sea-weed snack :)~
feed them to tilapia, they love it. free food free fish.
Great video, thanks for sharing! So did your skimmer end up not really pulling much out any more for you to choose to remove it?
No, the protein skimmer was still pulling out plenty... but much of that is food and nutrients that I wanted to leave cycling for constant feeding. In any case, the system has thrived and been very stable without the skimmer, which I sold for $250 of the $300 I bought it for!

Nice work.
How long did it take for the algae in the display tank to go away?
Nice video +++ Were did you buy the LED? 1:36min
Also wanted to know how you did the "duct tape" splash guard? isn't the glue harmful to the reef?
I have been doing some research on algae scrubbers. People are saying its a ticking time bomb. How long has yours been running? Any spikes yet? I have always had a small hair algae problem and want to rid it all together. Im wondering if the LFS wants to keep selling products to mask the problems.
when you scrape the screen, do you scrape both sides of all existing algae? or do you leave something behind to keep it going???
so what else do you put in your morning green smoothie?
Vollick HAHA
Any update on this ATS and Tank please?
do you have any ideas how to extend the time between cleanings?
I have a question... Does the amount of flow matter? would the return water falling in the sump be too much for the scrubber?
Ricardo DLT i used the over flow straight from the tank as did my friend and was fine. Just make surr the slot for the mesh is just right.
So i have mine running now. it seems similar in flow as his. The only difference is my lights arent covered inside a dark place. its been about a week and havent really gotten much growth. I have lights on about 16 hours. Too much?
Ricardo DLT youre not going to see much for a while usually takes a. month or two six to eaght is plenty. while tank light is out
I dont understand cleaning VS harvest , what are you doing on cleaning days. I just harvest by scraping like you but i do that every week and i always have the slim type algae not the turf that you were growing....??
I read somewhere that you need 12W of real power for 1.5g of feed . How much light do you use in your aquarium ?
How long is the lighting time for it
what do you do if you get red algae outbreaks? I had problems with that sometimes
Are you able to lower your nitrates and phosphates?
This was can literally strip your tank of nitrate and phosphates. It's a must if you have a crowded tank and over feed. Leaving some nitrates and phosphates is a good idea as inhabitants do utilize them.
what are the led's and where can I get them...they look red

what does he do with it? like what are it's uses?
hi, what do you harvest the algae for?
Wooow amazing!!
how is the algae not growing in the display tank...please explain
It outcompetes algae in the display tank
wow awesome video well done
I wonder if that algae is edible.
Chinese are selling it as sea-weed they have it on their menu as we speak.
Fish like tangs love it!
did you build this or can I buy one already built I hope
what kind of light are you ussing
Why was the algae turning brown ? What does that mean?
+Omy Nunu I believe that was an indication of a lack of food for the algae. If you notice, he upped the food a few times throughout the video, and afterwards the algae population in his scrubber began to recover and green back up.

stawelor no it's green hair algae
Nice!!
what kind of algae is it
is that a diy scrubber?

What the hell is that thing crawling at 5:11 ?
it's just a copepod thier good for the tank
Your right
hi what size pipe u using plz
Nice
where can I buy this???
I just don't understand. Because I have 90 gallows saltwater tank and I never had a hair algae issue such as you showed before using this Algae Scrubber. Were you using GFO and Carbon before using this algae scrubber? And were you making your own saltwater for water changes?
Super cool video. tnx.lol.
hey you still running the scrubber hows it going do you run po4 media are you still skimmers looks impressive man
since it and to fight algae, why not use a UV filter that eficieste more, cheaper and much simpler.
he's probably using the scrubber as a way to remove nitrates from the water
LUCIANO LEITE a uv light would kill the algae thus removing any benefits and still requires a lot of cleaning, this scrubber keeps the algae live and happy in a controlled environment away from his display

so you're telling me that you haven't run any filtration system except that algae curtain and that thinks completely cleaned it and cleansed it and heating up all the phosphates and nitrates?
The glue probably is not good.
An alternate way is to just lay a large sheet of clear sandwich wrap over the whole thing.
"Cleaning" and "harvesting" are the same thing: removing algae from the scrubber. This takes the nutrients with it, out of the water.
If you are getting slime, it usually means not enough light.
