In my opinion as a Korean listener, "Awake" is all about Jin himself.
He's not the best dancer, not the only singer and not the best song writer in BTS. He completed this song after rejecting 20 times by their music producer. He's even the eldest.
But anyway he wants to fly more and to be together with other six members. Whenever I listen to this song and the lyrics, it makes me cry....... Very truthful song in WINGS album.

I agree with you. From the beginning I thought the song was about Jin understanding and accepting his limitations within the group but at the same time trying to work harder. One time I even thought it sounded like he was leaving the group. Now I think it's a combination of my first impression and Demian's concept--the journey to finding yourself as you grow into adulthood, the things you need to change and leave behind in order to evolve. All BTS discography and concepts from beginning to now are about their own journey to adulthood and their experiences. But that's just MY opinion. Like they said, this is art and there are so many ways to interpret it.

When Jin looks at the camera, as "But It's My Fate" plays,, that breaks me 😭 it's as if he's saying that he knows he has to save the others !! (Even though I know that's not what the song is about, it just hits me in the feels)

this whole series of reactions are just making me go back and re-appreciate BTS artistry. Right now I'm watching BTS's show "Bon Voyage" and they are such complete idiots. My artistic, sweet, idiots. artitic, sweet, songwriting, girl-group dancing, dad joke telling, idiots, my living meme bois. I hope they never change and always continue to grow

Tbh, their promotion is next level. These short films were dropped day by day. Shook can't even explain how shook we were. There was even a time when I can't sleep without the lights on cause I was so scared and bothered how these were touching deep parts of my mind and soul I never knew it can reach. It was superb. They set the standards of kpop that high. Just like what the other commenters have said, start with "I NEED U (Original ver.)" that's where it all started.

To give further context about the chocolate, in the novel Demian, Emil's mother used to give him that as a treat. So chocolate forms a connection to the mother. At the end of the video the 'Eva inkblot' merges with the 'knife slashed inkblot' that represented V's Stigma which becomes Jungkook's melted painting in Begin. There is a further story to this but that includes the HYYH trilogy so I can't wait till you guys get to them.

you know, what makes me appreciate BTS most is the fact, than their music/art isn't only about jamming to the sick beats. Yes, they have the party songs and all, but there is a big part of their productions, that keeps educating us. They made me and lot of ARMYs read Hermann Hesse and the Omelas story (The ones who are leaving Omelas is the full name if I remember correctly) just so that we can keep up with their music videos.
Considering how young their fanbase is, this is really admirable. Their songs have so many motivational messages for young people about not giving up (Spring day, Not today) and about working hard for our dreams (Young forever, Dope).
Sometimes it's hard to imagine, that these boys are the artists esposible for these songs and at the same time the goofballs we see in their behind the scenes videos and reality shows ☺

First of all your insights and attention to detail are amazing :) thank you. I think you really would have benefited from watching the other parts of the story. Technically the short films are part of the LAST saga to this tale. The order goes like this I Need U, On Stage Prologue, Run, I Need U (Japanese Ver.), Epilogue: Young Forever, Run (Japanese Ver), Short Films 1-7, Boy Meets Evil, Blood Sweat and Tears and finally Blood Sweat and Tears (Japanese Ver)

    • @emy625

These have spanned over the past 2-3 years. If you want a bonus you should watch Danger! There are hints to this story line in this music video as well and it came out in 2014.

Just a small piece of info. Rap Monster (the leader) has a very high IQ and is known to be a bit of a genius, he read Demian in middle school (the book these short films are based around) and suggested that it be the concept of their latest album. Also their CEO of the company graduated with a degree in Art Aesthetics. Maybe that explains the level of complexity visually and narrative wise in these short films.

IMO the nurse writes "Treatment : Placebo" so he's not really sick, but the "drugs" society and medical staff give him makes him hallicinate immediately after, he wakes, sees the picture, and automatically knows what is reality and is liberated and goes on his way. In the novel Demian, his mother soothes him with chocolate so he can be comforted. So it's a snickers "you are not yourself" to put it all together. He's himself and moves on when he realizes what is reality and what is not. Well put together series of short art films, I loved them and love watching your reactions and comments after. I suggest you go back and watch the music videos from their last 3 years, I see many commentators have given a list and then you will see so many connections, and please put on sub titles in Eng so you can delve into the deeper meanings...so so so looking forward to this.

I feel like I relate the most to the #7 short film Awake. I often feel like I have no dream don't know what to do but just keep struggling and trying to figuring out like Jin being able to do what he dream but people tell him he is not good enough but he keep struggling and saying he might never fly but in the end of the song he said maybe he can fly.

I think these films are as amazing as they are because the fact that there is no right answer to the story. Its meant to be digested and interpreted differently for each person who decides to watch, which is something you dont see often with musicians. I really applaud bts for being able to make such a deep and intertwining story that never fails to make people interested in them. Anyways,, thanks SO much for making these and actually delving into the meanings compared to 99 percent of other reactors. ^^ I would still HIGHLY recommend going through and actually watching the full story (other people have commented the order so i wont bother typing it) and maybe going back through and watching these again. You open a much bigger palette of information once you watch all of the videos and it honestly becomes a big crazy mess. Id absolutely LOVE to see you guys come up with a full fleshed theory after watching all the videos ^^ thanks again!!!

Personally I've always found the themes of youth, growing-up and friendship something BTS has always excelled at conveying to us and I can't express enough how much appreciate it over the usual romance/love themes in general music.
Many have already suggested these but the next thing to watch is probably the beginning of the arc:
    1. I Need U (original vr) + 19 (there's a shorter version - don't watch that since it won't show you the whole thing)
    2. Prologue (find one with English subs)
    3. Run
    4. Epilogue: Young Forever
Honestly, my favourite part about these videos is their closeness to each other - these boys honestly represent hard work and seem like the paragon of friendship.
You guys have always been remarkable different other react channels due to your insight and the time you give to think through what you've just watched. I"m still new to BTS so I'm kinda learning with you guys as well, so thank you for these videos.
    Cheers

Please note that this Wings short film series culminates with BTS's next release of "Blood, Sweat & Tear" where 4 minutes into the piece Rap Mon narrates the line "He too was a temptor. He too was a link to the second, the evil world with which I no longer wanted to have anything to do." There in the mv at 5:45, you can see Jin approaching the mirror on the white wall above which is embossed in German, "Man muss noch Chaos in sich haben, um einen tanzenden Stern gebären zu können." This is the original German line from Friedrich Nietzsche's novel "Thus Spake Zarathustra (Also sprach Zarathustra)." It means, "One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star." Here, "dancing" is "the most genuine form of art in expressing one's soul," as one excellent, erudite ARMY(this is how the BTS fans are called) commented. In "Zarathustra" this line continues on with: "I say unto you: you still have chaos in yourselves. Alas, the time is coming when man will no longer give birth to a star. Alas, the time of the most despicable man is coming, he that is no longer able to despise himself." This culmination of the Wings short film series in "Blood, Sweat & Tears" does not mark the end of the series, however. As with any other Korean cultural venture, especially when something like this series has the kind of intensity it has, it's got an outro, or "뒷풀이(duit-puri)" as is called in Korean. And it is BTS's next release "Spring Day (봄날)." I know you've done a reaction on "Blood, Sweat & Tears" about a month ago. But now that you know about the role of "Blood, Sweat & Tears" in the unfolding of the Wing series, I suggest for your next BTS reaction you do a back-to-back reaction to "Blood, Sweat & Tears" and "Spring Day," observing how Rap Mon's narration and the German quote from Zarathustra in "Blood, Sweat & Tears" fit into the Wings series, and how the whole thing outros with "Spring Day." Then you should make separate reaction video to BTS's next mv "Not Today" which is the fresh breakout from the whole past till "Spring Day" and the start of the new.

That scene where he burns the daisy petals goes all the way back to the I Need U mv which was where this whole story started (daisies represent death). If you wanna watch the story in the order the videos came out, it's:
    1. I Need U (original version)
    2. Prologue
    3. Run
    4. Fire
    5. Young Forever epilogue
    6. Short films
    7. Blood sweat and tears
    8. Not today
    9. Spring day
    10. Blood sweat and tears (Japanese version)

okay. I'm a just throw some stuff out here. Mama, which is my favorite bts, at first really made me think of over medication. I feel like all the pills being thrown at the guy in the padded room was symbolic of how, at least in America, the typical answer to someone with mental problems or a 'disorder' is medication...and then more medication to balance the side effects of that medication until the person becomes a shadow of themselves. We also know that Jhope's character struggles with a pill addiction. The pills he overdosed on in "I Need U" were from a prescription bottle. Maybe mental health issues were what led him to become an addict. He's always fighting to throw them away or burn them because when he's with PEOPLE he doesn't need them. He just wants to return to a younger, happier self

    • @penchychan
      @penchychan 7 лет назад

lelmDR.WHO? Ah, if you go back to the short film and pause it when the doctor is writing the report outside JHope's door, you will find another piece of the puzzle. He's diagnosed as having Munchausen Syndrome.

the pills were all supposedly placebos though, so ??
(and since hob's character has narcolepsy (??? or maybe he doesnt?? who tf knows what the true truth is lmao) i doubt he ever overdosed. he's typically shown throwing away his pills or letting most of them go un-swallowed..)

  • @sam.xcz23
    @sam.xcz23 7 лет назад +5

Art can be interpreted infinite amounts of ways each art piece means something different to everyone but as for my thoughts on Mama He wakes up right before the pill hatches open so I think maybe he is used to this schedule almost like he's been programmed. As for the all of pills that pour out I feel that symbolizes how many think medication can fix all your problems but it turns into a domino affect because they give you another pill to counteract the side effects of that pill but the excessive amount of pills symbolize how one can get overwhelmed by the negative attention they receive for having an illness or disease like society is looking down on them for being different. He takes a pill then everything is dark with various glowing colors this is to show the change in how he sees himself and his surroundings after taking the pill I think the change is negative like his senses heightened beyond his control and he didn't know how to control them. Him being in the confinement is a metaphor for him feeling trapped by his illness or disease but also how the medication traps him for being him true self and how alone he feels like he has no one but himself. He wakes up the door is open. He walks out to his freedom but he realizes how cruel the real world is and that nobody is ever truely free hence the dead smile. He sees the painting form Jimin's short film "Lie" I think the painting turns into your deepest desire for Jimin it was the trees that symbolized strength to define what borders were set for him. for JHope it turns into a mother and child maybe his mother supported him didn't think he was crazy didn't view him as sick and helpless like others.(drawing this from the full song and lyrics) He bites the snickers bar almost as if to say you are the only one who thinks Ive not completely lost it like hes shrugging it off and just accepting himself and not caring. Saying the world is messed up so why shouldn't I be. Like I said these are just my thoughts I haven't fully analyzed it like some people have but that's what I got from it

I think It's interesting that they say from Jin's song that it's about being bonded and need to be set free and it's his fate to move forward. However my thoughts are due to listening to the full song. I hope they react to the full songs since it MAJOR INSIGHT on each member and their thoughts of themselves or messages that they wanted to relay.
The Short films are actually the LAST part of the whole plot and story line.
The order is actually I Need U (Orginal 19+ ver) , Prologue, Run, Save me,Epilogue: Young Forever, Boy Meets Evil, Then the short films and Blood Sweat Tears.
You started from the end so you'll have to start from the beginning and end at the short films. Have fun with theorizing that. These have been spanned outbetween 2-3 years. and are extremely thought out. Still many people are trying to decipher and theorize everything. haha you should react to DreamTellers theory of everything after you've finished all the videos.

Great reaction, I love the way you guys analyze everything! These short films have a lot of interpretations but if you guys really want to get a feel of the full story and understand why some things happened in the films then I suggest you react to this list of videos in order:
I Need You mv (19+/original version)
Prologue On Stage (search with English subs because the original doesn't have them) *not a music video but more of a small film
    Run mv
    Forever Young mv
    * a lot of other people add the Japanese versions but I don't think it's necessary and they hand out copyrights like candy!
Hope you decide to go on another crazy BTS journey!! 😝

After watching MAMA again I noticed his freak out and also his emotionless stillness all happened inside the cube. I think the cube represents a place in his mind where he's safe to let out his unsightly emotions before he has to go out and face the world and be "normal" like a panic box. The member who's film that was j-hope is known to be the hopeful cheerful always happy member so maybe this represented his inner hidden feelings

Thank you so much for reacting to the wings series! You guys showed me a different perspective to what each film could mean and I really appreciate it! If you guys can, you should definitely try to react to their previous serious which consists of
    -I Need U +19 (original version)
    -Prologue: On Stage
    -Run
    -Epilogue: Young Forever
They basically serve as a prequel to the wings short films; the story & lyrics are absolutely beautiful and I feel like you guys would have a lot to analyze and talk about if you see them. Thank you again for reacting to our boys, love you guys so much!

this was just my opinion. if you summarize the stories, you'll see the correlation of each short films. do you remember in the first film, at the last part jungkook(the man in white shirt) put a drawing of a bird in an envelope. in the fifth film(the guy who tattoed himself) received an envelop, it didn't show what was in the envelop but he tattooed the bird on his arms. and if you will notice their circles were combined in the "wings" album logo. the second film, there were part that there was a street sign or something like that, it was actually related with the fourth film where Suga run in the middle of the road. and if you would notice there in the fourth film there is a part showing a bath tub with a water looks like boiling. it was actually the tub where Jimin fell in the short film#2. and then their circles were combined. in the third film there were a glimpse where in the eyes of taehyung(the one caught by the police) was an image of a mother and child it was actually the same image in the 6th short film. and in the 6th short film you will see the walls was painted with different color was actually the same color of the gate where taehyung was caught vandalizing. their circles were also combined. and with the last film you will notice that the all the circle was devided into 4. I think the fourth circle( the plain) represent him. there is a possibility that he is dead Coz there were theories in the HYYH era that Jin(the man on last film) was dead . that is also the reason why he was walking barefoot. if you would notice the six pictures. actually represent the six members. It was like he cant go out of the room since he is trying to protect and watch over his friends although he is suffering but then eventually he went to the light and left them.. but then again this was just a theory hahahah

I think if you guys watch I Need U, Prolong, and Run (in that order) you will be able to pick up on and connect some of the imagery seen in these short films. Those video came before the "wings" concept and were the launching pad of sorts for the complex and compelling story telling we see from BTS now. I Need U was a complete switch in style, concept, music, and image for BTS and launched them into popularity as well as launching the kpop fandom into hysterics over theories and possible plot points and inspiration.

I think you guys need to keep the other film references in mind because that familiar painting is quite effective here. That painting is, actually, representative of a lie. A bueaitful false reality. Note it appears first in the title short film LIE, and as you can find in each pair of the first 6 films, things often complement each other. Let me explain--in LIE, Jimin is shown to be basically facing a struggle but in the end going down the dark path of escaping realty and believing the lie. This can be seen in various scenes such as rewinding bathtub water, him being trapped in a painting, him biting the apple (which would show him the truth, BUT) and him REWINDIG the apple bite. Most significantly, at the end he turns the camera to focus on the painting again, him trapping himself in his false reality of believing the pretty painting called a Lie.
J-hope parallels yet diverges this in this MAMA short film. He struggles and if you notice the paper the doc writes, his illness is one that basically means "you are not ill but are believing to be ill and this can placebo actually cause real illness". In a sense jhope is also in escapism. But in the end he is able to walk away from the painting and move past his false reality, because of his strong connection to his mother. The chocolate represents his connection to his mother.

I think each short films was a journey of every member, has this personal touch of themselves and incorporated it to the novel demian. I've read the story and it was basically the main characters' journey and also the battle of his youth.
Also what i like about these films is that it doesnt have one interpretation they put metaphors so that every person who can watch can resonate and apply it to their own stories as well. (technically a strategy and also a message for everyone)
    you should definitely watch
    I need u 19+
    on stage prologue
    run
    epilogue: young forever
    with english subtitles
also the full song of each film cuz its their own story applied to the short films definitely have a connection based on your interpretations
    -begin by jungkook
    -lie by jimin
    -stigma by v
    -first love by suga
    -reflection by rapmonster
    -mama by jhope
    -awake by jin

This actually relates to the HYYH series. In some frames, you see the doctor prescribing him Placebo pills, which are used to treat those with Muchausen Syndrome. The syndrome is basically when someone believes they are sick and fakes symptoms for it, an act they later forget and go to get treatment for. In I NEED U, JHope overdoses on pills he believes will treat his 'narcolepsy' when in reality he falls asleep because of the pills he took.
On another note, the piece at the beginning of Awake is Liszt's Benediction, which has a story related to it that I can't recall clearly but is similar to a scene in the book Demian. In the film, the God Abraxas is printed on the wallpaper.

  • @AprendeAiBr
    @AprendeAiBr 7 лет назад

In I need U, he talks about trying to kill himself with pills while analyzing his face for not being handsome, and in this teaser he only takes a to and goes crazy, soon after a picture appears that reminds him of his mother when he was unhappy . He fer the picture out the window and thinks it's reality but when he opens it and really see it was a lie, that his low self esteem was because he believed in a lie. His mother helped him see this, she gave him support and strength.

It's so funny tho. They are so serious about it. 😂😂😂

  • @jolanda3816

What you hear here in the short films are only snippets of the full songs. All of them have their own solo songs and the name of each member's song correspond to the names of the short films: Jungkook-BEGIN, Jimin-LIE, V-STIGMA, Suga-FIRST LOVE, Rap Monster-REFLECTION, J-Hope-MAMA and Jin-AWAKE.
The songs are all individual, so each member tell their own story, something about themselves. Each song (and short film) is loosely connected to Demian, (a book by Hermann Hesse) and is about growing up, finding oneself. I won't write everything that I have to say about these short films because I'd be here all day (and you too) so I'll just point out a few things. I think that the person in the painting in Jungkook's short film BEGIN is Suga. Did you hear the whistling in Jungkook's and Suga's short films? It's from Jungkook's song BEGIN. I believe Jungkook is leading Suga away from the piano so that he doesn't get hit by the car that crashes into the building/store where the piano is. As you maybe have noticed, they all go in pairs except for Jin. Jungkook - Suga, Jimin - J-Hope, V - Rap Monster. I think V tried to reach Rap Monster but he couldn't answer the phone call because the chains were in the way. This is connected to the first series of MVs that I list below.
Now onto the songs. Jungkook's song is about his relationship with his members. He was very young when he joined BigHit Entertainment and BTS so the other members have been and are a big part of him. They basically raised him. They took care of him. Jungkook was very shy and insecure in the beginning but his hyungs (means brother in Korean, a blood brother or someone who is close as a brother & something men call other OLDER men to show respect; there are a lot of different honorfics), who supported him and helped him made Jungkook comfortable and more confident in himself and less shy. As he says in his solo song his hyungs "made him", "gave him colors". Jungkook wasn't good at showing emotions but his hyungs helped him become himself and able to show more emotions. His solo song is basically a thank you to his hyungs for taking so good care of him.
I have two interpretations of Jimin's song LIE. One theory is that Jimin's been lying to himself about how good he is. He's good but he hasn't believed it himself. He has said to himself that he isn't good enough. He has high expectations of himself and is self critical. Another theory (which is how I interpreted it the first time) is that as he became an idol he had to become a certain way. In the beginning Jimin had abs, and when he lost them some "fans" commented stuff and seemed to like him only because of his abs. He starved himself to get those abs! He is more than just abs!! So I interpreted it as Jimin is caught in a lie, which is him not being himself. As an idol he can't be himself. He sings that he wants his smile back. He wants to be happy with who he is and not feeling that he has to meet others expectations. This is what I felt that he tried to convey, but it's only an interpretation, not facts.
I also have two theories of V's song STIGMA. One is that he feels sorry towards his siblings that he hasn't been able to be there and experience them grow up. Another one is that the "sister" and "brother" in the song have religious meaning (he does sing 'Are you calling me a sinner?')...or then it's a combination of both...
Suga's FIRST LOVE is about music/the piano. Suga can play the piano. Music saved him when he was in a bad period of life...he had considered suicide at one point (listen to his WHOLE mixtape and you'll understand: AGUST'D)
Rap Monster' s Reflection is, well, about self reflection. Rap Monster has dealt with depression but he pushed through it. He has had it tough and difficulties liking himself for who he is. As he says in the song "I wish I could love myself".
J-Hope's MAMA is about his mother. He is very grateful that he got to start dancing as it is his passion. He is grateful for the support he's got from his mother.
Jin's AWAKE is about himself and his members. Jin doesn't think he is as talented as the other members and doesn't believe he can "fly" with the others, but only walk. He doesn't believe he can get wings like the others. He thinks this is his fate, that he can't do anything about it and that it's how it's supposed to be. Nevertheless, he still wants to fight and be with them, because they make him happy and he likes to be in BTS. He doesn't get that many lines in the songs, he doesn't get that much screen time in the MVs, he is a less popular vocalist and he isn't as good a dancer as the others. Jin seems to be under appreciated and less liked, which breaks my heart.
I'd recommend you to watch "I Need U" (original version! Type in "I Need U original version" on RUclips!) "On Stage: Prologue", "Run", "Run" (Japanese version!) and "Young Forever". Also check out "Fire" (it's connected and imo important) to understand more. After that, please watch DreamTeller's theory video of these MVs (they have English subs!). ^^ This series is coming before these short films. You'll see connections between the videos from the first series of MVs and these short films. After all of that, please watch "Boy Meets Evil", "Blood, Sweat and Tears" (I know you have already seen it but please watch it again, because now you have a storyline, symbolism and tools to better understand what's going on) and "Blood, Sweat and Tears" (Japanese version!).
If you've read all this, thank you!!! Appreciated! ❤️

Personally, I really enjoyed your interpretation of the last short film, because I think it's interesting that everyone picks up on that "transition" vibe, but everyone explains that transition in a different way. For you guys, it was an artistic transition, because that how you relate. In terms of Jin's personal story (the BTS member in last film) I think that IS his message. As someone who perhaps doesn't relate as an artist, but relates more as a BTS fan/average person, I see it as the transition between youth and adulthood. You have to destroy your childhood world/beliefs/innocence to become the person you'll be as an adult.
Some of the comments on this video annoy me, because a lot seem too focused on you guys getting to "the right" answer aka the most commonly believed ones. I'm a believer in the "every interpretation is valid" because everyone will see it via their own personal experience, and get the message that resonates the most with them.
