Thanks for addressing this topic, I've struggled with this all my life and just recently decided to weed out all my habitual sin so I can fully connectand honor God. I'm doing better but it's still a struggle at times. It's almost like I'm good for about a month but the tension slowly builds and I know I'm going to fail. If you’re Catholic head to confession at least once a month, but I recommend more from experience. This is a very hard sin to beat and only the grace of God can help you do it. If your not a Catholic, pray to the Lord, tell him you’re sorry and will try not do it anymore with his help. Here’s an Act of Contrition to help you. Thank you for this was very informative. As a woman, I have dealt with this issue for years. I don't indulge in pornagraphy. Frankly, you've seen one or two erotic entanglements then you have seen them all. I concentrate on my own gratification, no mental or visual stimulus. I'm single and satisfied being alone. My situation is unique because I have never been intimate with anyone. And I am content with this fact. I've always understood masturbation as a lust of the flesh and being seen as unclean. Essentially, he's saying that masturbation isn't a sin by itself, but doing it can LEAD you to sin As someone who struggles with masturbation addiction I can 100% say that it leads to a sinful dead existence, I have been clean for nearly 8 days, its a struggle to keep myself in check, but compared to the MANY years that I was masturbating to being clean now? I feel more of a person than I ever have. I battle the urges by doing daily and nightly devotionals and earnestly praying every morning and evening for the Holy Spirit to come down and embolden and strengthen me so I can combat the urges. Since I began earnestly praying and giving myself over to the bible and its teachings, the urge to look at dirty stuff has gone down and it is getting easier to combat the urge to do so. Being heavily dependent on masturbation leads one to be numb to everything, all you want is that fix and u will do it as often as you can. Eventually, it will take up a lot of your thoughts and you will plan out your day around it. It was a horrible existence looking back and I have done a lot while addicted to it that I regret. I urge you all, take a good hard look at your life if you masturbate. Is it something that you center your life on? Can you not go through a day without having your fix? Do you plan out your day with the intention to have breaks to pleasure yourself? And other such questions, if the answer is yes, you have an addiction problem. Addiction is a sin that leads to having a dead sinful existence. So no, Masturbation isn't a sin, but overdoing it leads to a LIFE of sin and porn addiction. No, lust is not a sin. Lust is normal by the sex drive and necessary to get physically aroused in order to be able to have sex. Without lust you cannot get physically aroused and you won't be able to have sex.

While I do agree that under almost all circumstances, masturbation is flirting with the line that crosses over into sin and in 95% of cases it wouldn't be glorifying to God, but that last question, about being away from your wife and saying a cop out like, "well God gave you nocturnal emission so you shouldn't need sex" is in conflict with what I read in 1 corinthians 7 which says it is "better to marry than to burn with lust" and "Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control." Now, I know one could respond, "well self control is a fruit of the Spirit so just get more self control." but I think one of the reasons you ought to marry IS for the release of sexual desire in a godly way and that if Satan is going to cause you problems while distant from your spouse, since the ideal situation would be that you would unite physically often to avoid this temptation, than I think masturbation with the spouse only in mind is a commendable act. But it's hard to say, because we don't have an exact word on this, only principles that could argue it both ways. 95% of cases masturbation wouldn't glorify God? C'mon, it's impossible to glorify God with masturbation. Masturbation is a purely self-centered act, pleasing only yourself. You'd have to be very careful masturbating in marriage as - believe it or not - you may end up preferring masturbation to sex, and thus end up depriving your spouse. You and your spouse could engage in mutual masturbation, but I wouldn't recommend solo masturbation. Masturbation works by lustful thoughts. Sure, you can avoid lustful thoughts and still masturbate, but it's very unfulfilling compared to the alternative. The temptation to invite lustful thoughts will only increase until you're willingly sinning again; "If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off"
i appreciate your heart, you are trying to walk in a pure and blameless way to live out what you are, for if you have believed in the free grace of Christ for the forgiveness of sins (1 corinthians 15:1-4) then you are my brother and I applaud your take on things. however, if a couple is long term sepereated like a man serving in a military situation, is it better for him to think about his wife and relieve himself since, considering the scriptures i cited above, sex in marriage is in part to subdue the urge to do it with someone that isn't our spouse or to burn with lustful thoughts and feelings, or would it be better for that man to try to "tough it out" and next time he's in a middle eastern town near the military base, he caves and shacks up with a hooker in a harem? I'm just trying to say, very rarely do you see "one size fits all" applications to every situation in the scriptures. I'm not condoning or recommending masturbation. I fight that battle every day prayerfully, knowing my weakness and I am pursuing marriage so that I may not have to do that any more. I'm just saying there may be rare circumstances where it would be better to seek relief while lovingly thinking of your wife than to let your urges build up and get the best of you, which is why Paul exhorted couples to come together often so that they may not be tempted by Satan. But sometimes you can't do that because of distance, and I think in that case, it would be acceptable.

I suppose it could argued that the soldier is constantly on duty and should remain focused, and that if he feels tempted to slip into a whorehouse he should pray to God for help with it. It remains a big struggle for many but you have addressed it very frankly as it should be addressed. If it's capable to make people feel ashame after committing the act then there is with all honesty no better name for it but a sin.
I've felt guilted by this thought for a while now and one source I found said that if I have to ask if it's okay, that's the Lord through my conscience giving me pause. Whether The Bible directly addresses anything or condemns everything else around it, if it feels sinful in nature, then it probably is. Please pray for me. This struggle is not easy and I have fallen short of success far too often. If there's any act out there that you perform and then you immediately feel guilty about it, what's the point in doing it? It's definitely a hard struggle. Today has been extremely hard. The temptation and urge has been so strong today. I've been clean for about 2 and a half weeks now. It's something that I've struggled with my entire life. As well as a pornography addiction. I'm also 2 weeks clean from that. It's a struggle that I deal with every single day. I have my battles with that too. Especially since my wife has gone to heaven. There are days and weeks that I win the battles and there are a lot of times I lose the battle. I can say with God's help I win more now a days then I used to. But I would ask for your prayers for me too in that area.

holy spirit is kind and great and he doesn't need our praise, if you say blasphemous or profane words to god, he will spare you, he is not a child and way too great to want to punish you for you subjecting him in your profane words, but he will never forgive if you do or say something harmful to a fellow human being. only forgiveness of the victim will spare you from God's wrath. because that is not about him anymore, its about an independent soul, and because God is ultimate justice, even though he want good things to happen to you but can't go against the rule, if he goes against the rule, that would undermine his justice and we know God is the ultimate judge and justice. having said that, I'm sure no one says any blasphemous and profane words to god because he gave so many great gifts to us, the most important of which is a large brain and consciousness.

You be encouraged and know that God give you deliverance in this area, repent of it and ask God to give you the strength to deny your flesh in crucial moments of temptation. The more you tell your flesh no the stronger you become in the spirit, it's a daily process however you can overcome this. Daily hunger for God, prayer, bible study, fasting and fellowship with other believers will keep you grounded. I'm going to add you to my prayer list when I go before the lord in prayer intercession.

There are many times I have tried to think about good true and honorable things but like a volcano, under pressure, my mind always comes back to those memories. I am getting tired of fighting. A website or a physical place I understand, but how do you flee a memory?
You're associating a volcano with - well, I know what you're associating it with. For a while after my conversion, my mind was still very overly-sexual. I would smirk at certain words and find innuendo in everything. The good news is, it's actually easy to rewire your brain to think purely. And if you're struggling, you can always ask God to help you in prayer. That doesn't mean you can continue tempting yourself, however; effort is still required on your part.
To further answer your question: I was secular once. I have an ex girlfriend, with whom I must've had sex with well over a thousand times. I have lots of memories about what happened and how things felt. But I don't actively pursue them in my mind. Once I left her and started coming to church it was quite difficult to shut the memories out especially when alone in bed, but it definitely gets easier over time especially as you fill your mind with God's teachings. If you still struggle, read your Bible every day and pray. I personally found over time that the less I read my Bible, the more easily I sinned.
It is true that you could develop an addiction just like anything else. I know a woman who is literally addicted to buying purses and her husband told her that if she continues to spend $1000s on purses that he is going to divorce her. We are a slave to anything that we obey. Either way, do everything in word and in deed in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and to the glory of the father.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but in short: it all comes down to if it's under control or if it controls you instead and that if you fail to see the humanity of someone, you already betrayed that person before talking to them.
What if partners are away from each other; does it justify masturbation? I think the general answer to this question is that married people shouldn't put themselves in situation that expose their partner and make them vulnerable to evil things. That's why the family comes first. If for instance a Christian man is offered millions for a job that will keep him miles away long term from his family; the wise option is to turn down that Job because it will be unrealistic for his wife to stay that long alone without compromising in anyway. On the other hand, if the man is away for a reasonably short period of time, he can arrange to satisfy his wife before leaving and thus with her consent; so that she is in the right conditions to preserve herself from sinful practices.

As someone who struggles with masturbation addiction I can 100% say that it leads to a sinful dead existence, I have been clean for nearly 8 days, its a struggle to keep myself in check, but compared to the MANY years that I was masturbating to being clean now? I feel more of a person than I ever have. I battle the urges by doing daily and nightly devotionals and earnestly praying every morning and evening for the Holy Spirit to come down and embolden and strengthen me so I can combat the urges. Since I began earnestly praying and giving myself over to the bible and its teachings, the urge to look at dirty stuff has gone down and it is getting easier to combat the urge to do so.
Being heavily dependent on masturbation leads one to be numb to everything, all you want is that fix and u will do it as often as you can. Eventually, it will take up a lot of your thoughts and you will plan out your day around it. It was a horrible existence looking back and I have done a lot while addicted to it that I regret. I urge you all, take a good hard look at your life if you masturbate. Is it something that you center your life on? Can you not go through a day without having your fix? Do you plan out your day with the intention to have breaks to pleasure yourself? And other such questions, if the answer is yes, you have an addiction problem. Addiction is a sin that leads to having a dead sinful existence.
So no, Masturbation isn't a sin, but overdoing it leads to a LIFE of sin and porn addiction. If you can discipline, REALLY discipline yourself to only do it on a rare occasion, more power to you, keep it to a rare occasion. As for me? I know I'm susceptible to falling hard if I fall once, so I can't afford to do it even once. I will continue to throw myself into God's word and continue to pray every morning and night. It's what got me through so far and so I shall continue.

While I do agree that under almost all circumstances, masturbation is flirting with the line that crosses over into sin and in 95% of cases it wouldn't be glorifying to God, but that last question, about being away from your wife and saying a cop out like, "well God gave you nocturnal emission so you shouldn't need sex" is in conflict with what I read in 1 corinthians 7 which says it is "better to marry than to burn with lust" and "Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control."
Now, I know one could respond, "well self control is a fruit of the Spirit so just get more self control." but I think one of the reasons you ought to marry IS for the release of sexual desire in a godly way and that if Satan is going to cause you problems while distant from your spouse, since the ideal situation would be that you would unite physically often to avoid this temptation, than I think masturbation with the spouse only in mind is a commendable act.
But it's hard to say, because we don't have an exact word on this, only principles that could argue it both ways. You'd have to be very careful masturbating in marriage as - believe it or not - you may end up preferring masturbation to sex, and thus end up depriving your spouse. You and your spouse could engage in mutual masturbation, but I wouldn't recommend solo masturbation.
Masturbation works by lustful thoughts. Sure, you can avoid lustful thoughts and still masturbate, but it's very unfulfilling compared to the alternative. The temptation to invite lustful thoughts will only increase until you're willingly sinning again; "If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off"

I've never served in the military, so I don't know if it'd be possible to get a convenient break for a release. I suppose it could argued that the soldier is constantly on duty and should remain focused, and that if he feels tempted to slip into a whorehouse he should pray to God for help with it. But hey, I'm no stranger to such urges; they can be very compelling. I would leave it between the individual and God. There's no verses expressly forbidding it, and likewise no verses encouraging it. If the individual feels as though they're sinning by doing it, they certainly shouldn't.

It remains a big struggle for many but you have addressed it very frankly as it should be addressed. If it's capable to make people feel ashame after committing the act then there is with all honesty no better name for it but a sin.

It's definitely a hard struggle. Today has been extremely hard. The temptation and urge has been so strong today. I've been clean for about 2 and a half weeks now. It's something that I've struggled with my entire life. As well as a pornography addiction. I'm also 2 weeks clean from that. It's a struggle that I deal with every single day. Some days are harder than others. I know that I can't do this without God. But I could also use some prayers to help fight this spiritual warfare I have going on. Please pray for me, I’ve been addicted to this for many years. Recently I made a promise to God that I won’t do this sin hereafter but I get lot of temptations now than before. I need God to remove this sin from me
I have my battles with that too. Especially since my wife has gone to heaven. There are days and weeks that I win the battles and there are a lot of times I lose the battle. I can say with God's help I win more now a days then I used to. But I would ask for your prayers for me too in that area.

Eight helpful tips to gain self-control:
1) Fasting is the recommended and proven spiritual method to fight the sexual desire. Early Christian ascetics found by experience that one day fasts are best; and to only eat one small meal a day. One could modify that by using protein powder. Put in zip-lock bag to carry until need, then add water and drink from bag. (protein powder preferably non-whey ((dairy)) and non-GMO.)
2) abstain from meat and eggs (and perhaps even dairy products) for months. Be ware: it’s essential to take a vitamin B-12 supplement every day. 6) Abstain from listening to worldly/secular music, especially rock and roll, pop’, etc. and looking at TV, advertising and art with sexually oriented images, watching movies, looking at magazines that aren’t about science or a trade/skill, reading novels.
7) Don’t let your eyes rest on other people’s bodies.
8) Frequently think about death and everlasting punishment of hell, and as well as the joy of living in Heaven. (YT has some great “saw hell” and “saw heaven” testimonies.)

You be encouraged and know that God give you deliverance in this area, repent of it and ask God to give you the strength to deny your flesh in crucial moments of temptation. The more you tell your flesh no the stronger you become in the spirit, it's a daily process however you can overcome this. Daily hunger for God, prayer, bible study, fasting and fellowship with other believers will keep you grounded. I'm going to add you to my prayer list when I go before the lord in prayer intercession.

For a while after my conversion, my mind was still very overly-sexual. I would smirk at certain words and find innuendo in everything. The good news is, it's actually easy to rewire your brain to think purely. And if you're struggling, you can always ask God to help you in prayer. That doesn't mean you can continue tempting yourself, however; effort is still required on your part.
To further answer your question: I was secular once. I have an ex girlfriend, with whom I must've had sex with well over a thousand times. I have lots of memories about what happened and how things felt. But I don't actively pursue them in my mind. Once I left her and started coming to church it was quite difficult to shut the memories out especially when alone in bed, but it definitely gets easier over time especially as you fill your mind with God's teachings. If you still struggle, read your Bible every day and pray. I personally found over time that the less I read my Bible, the more easily I sinned.
It is true that you could develop an addiction just like anything else. I know a woman who is literally addicted to buying purses and her husband told her that if she continues to spend $1000s on purses that he is going to divorce her.
We are a slave to anything that we obey.
Either way, do everything in word and in deed in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and to the glory of the father.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but in short: it all comes down to if it's under control or if it controls you instead and that if you fail to see the humanity of someone, you already betrayed that person before talking to them.

I think the general answer to this question is that married people shouldn't put themselves in situation that expose their partner and make them vulnerable to evil things.
That's why the family comes first.
If for instance a Christian man is offered millions for a job that will keep him miles away long term from his family; the wise option is to turn down that Job because it will be unrealistic for his wife to stay that long alone without compromising in anyway.
On the other hand, if the man is away for a reasonably short period of time, he can arrange to satisfy his wife before leaving and thus with her consent; so that she is in the right conditions to preserve herself from sinful practices.
