  • Two weeks had passed since I last caught a glimpse of an American Mink down by the creek. That changed while on a dog walk, and later that day I was back with my gear ready to film. Recorded on December 30, 2020. ↓↓↓

This footage you've captured is really special, great music choice as well! I captured my first footage of a mink last weekend. Found the little guy curled up sleeping! Fascinating little creatures.

This is so cool! Ive never seen such extended footage of a mink before. You must’ve spent a lot of time with it

Thanks! I think I spent about two hours with it before it got too dark and shot from two positions. Maybe it’s just this particularly brave mink, but it was also cool that I didn’t have to worry about being concealed so it was a nice, comfortable afternoon sitting by the creek with my camera.

Ryan, this is spectacular footage! The scene itself is of extreme beauty. I can think of nothing more beautiful in all of nature than snow and ice .... and you have not only filmed an extremely beautiful winter wonderland, but also managed to include a most interesting and handsome mustelid in the scene!
I am wondering if, when you recorded this bit of amazing wildlife action, you also recorded the audio. It would be great to hear the ambient sounds of the gurgling creek, the wind, etc, instead of the music.

Top grade footage, music, editing, and story telling, Ryan. Mink tried to hide its catch, but you managed to film it having dinner. Love the way you started sequence with critter emerging from the ice hole. I’ll bet you had to wait quite a while to capture that image. Is the American Mink a protected species? Fast approaching 4K subs, congrats!👍

Where I am I think the American Mink is classified as “Least Concern” as far as protections go.
It will surprise you to know that the shot with the mink hiding away and eating its catch was the first thing I filmed. After that I watched it catch a few more crayfish and a couple fish. A very good hunter! The shot of it emerging happened early on too. After it went through that hole into the water I left the camera there in case it popped back up in the same hole and that’s exactly what happened.
      Thanks for watching!

    Nice video!
I watched your video on shooting with the Sony FX5. I'm wondering what's your take on A7r3 vs the FX6 paired with the 200-600 for nature and wildlife video.
    Thanks in advance.

a7R III or did you mean a7S III? For the a7R, I would think the FX6 beats it in every way except price. The a7S is a little tougher and I don't think there is any one answer and depends on a person's values for a camera. If size and price are big factors, that person might want the a7S. Otherwise the FX6 offers more on top of what the a7S can do. I would easily go with the FX6 and I haven't even used one yet, but that's me. Kind of a bummer they're full frame sensors though. For my a7S III review I rocked the 1.4x or 2x full time if I recall correctly to get over that.
