WOW the part about waking up and having the first thing on your mind being what you can and can't eat and how much you weigh really resonated with me. That alone has given me so much guilt and has put such a damper on so many other parts of my life that I wish I could put that focus and energy towards.

I love Geneen and have been following her since the 80's. But I do have to say I am in a 12 step program and for the first time I can see how both can work for me. What you are talking about is what we talk about too. It's a little bit different but the self care, loving self, listening to myself and my body are all there. Thank you Geneen for this and thank you for having this podcast.

Yea I relate to this. Her book feels so deeply calming, like a massive hug and shield from the deep shame around my body and how I look.
From that place dieting for me comes from a different place. The liberation comes first, the self love comes first, the calm and acceptance comes first
From that calm place you don’t expect yourself to change in a day, you don’t feel that urgency, you feel more calm and settled

I just found your channel a week ago and this has been the only thing that makes sense to me. This is the only thing that has even slightly teared down negative emotional eating/ eating habits. I think this is so good because it addresses shame which is not talked about a lot.

The poem that Geneen means at 41:15 is probably (I'm guessing) "The Orange" by Wendy Cope. It goes like this:
    The Orange
At lunchtime I bought a huge orange-
The size of it made us all laugh.
I peeled it and shared it with Robert and Dave-
They got quarters and I had a half.
And that orange, it made me so happy,
    As ordinary things often do
Just lately. The shopping. A walk in the park.
This is peace and contentment. It’s new.
The rest of the day was quite easy.
I did all the jobs on my list
And enjoyed them and had some time over.
    I love you. I’m glad I exist.

Wow, that was utterly amazing to watch! I feel more able to deal with my binge eating than I ever have before! Just making conscious decisions and evaluations can be so empowering I guess! I think I might also keep a food journal (not what I eat but how I felt, why I ate it, maybe the emotions that lead me to eat it etc) just to help me practice that mindful eating. Doing that will force to to contemplate the why and the how about my feelings around when I eat. Again, not my feelings of the actual food, but the external factors that surround it. As she said, it's all about our treatment of ourselves x

wow this was great, didn't know of geneen roth before but now i'm going to read up more. she embodies great attitudes. the parts that resonated most with me and i made notes: intuitive eating isn't just a free for all mentality , it's actually conscious and considered, it's the ability to make choices like an adult. it's about being aware of how you're feeling, how what you're eating is making you feel, and if you want to feel like that. it's the freedom to make choices, and own those choices. i also liked what she said about daily focus on what's good, what's enough, what's not wrong today - basically a gratitude practice, but even phrasing it as that there's enough somehow makes it more neutral. and also that you can't blame circumstances - circumstances just show up what's already there and needs to be looked at. but that we should still normalise all our feelings - they can be understandable, but you can't blame the circumstances or put labels on things. but you can own your choices. also what she said about how what we consume / other choices then affect our food/eating and make us act out on food...so it's not only about the food.

OMG! this video was so eye opening for me. Right now I'm on that bing/deprivation cycle she was talking about, and I need to gain control over my relationship with food. I want so bad to find my happy medium. Sometimes I don't know how to, but omg this information is pure gold to start the journey. Trying to stop judging myself, and practice some self love (not self-indulgent lol)
Lastly, thank you sooo so much Victoria for this interview, I really needed it today.

All your social media accounts make me feel so inspired and heard. I seriously love your tik toks. xoxo

I have to say that while I’ve taken issue with some short form content created by Victoria Garrick on TikTok, this was an incredibly enlightening convo-particularly the more nuanced dive into the element of discipline that is required even (maybe especially) with healthy practice of intuitive eating. The interpretation of intuitive eating as license to binge eat is very alarming to me and it’s part of why I’ve skirted it and not taken it seriously. This format is great for Victoria Garrick from my perspective and I’ll be seeking more videos. Quality content.

Like I’m not even hungry .. and I was so confused as to why this was happening ??? So thank you so so so very much for this and I will be sure to read her books... also do you happen to have a book ??? Because if not .. pleaaassseeee write one !!

    • @kinleightate3504
      @kinleightate3504 4 года назад

in my opinion it depends. I feel like eating a lot at one time is bad but I believe that if you eat many times a day like 5 times then it's more healthy but make sure you trying to get healthy foods!! but don't starve yourself if your hungry fill yourself up buttt with healthy foods to stay in shape. hope that's helps

Eating a lot when you are hungry is not a bad thing, in fact, it's great! Don't let what others define what "too much" is for you. Listening to your own body is what intuitive eating is all about ;)
