- Wild camp in the Peaks!
I met up with Ben from @daleyoutdoors for a wild camp in the Peak District to visit two airplane crash sites, the Bleaklow Bomber, as well as a lesser known crash site, the Blenheim Bomber, on the moors of the Peak District.
Also check out @SummitOrNothing videos, they're awesome!
The Bleaklow Bomber was a US Air Force Boeing RB-29A Superfortress called 'Over Exposed'.
It was modified as a reconnaissance aircraft, rather than a bomber and crashed at Higher Shelf Stones on the Bleaklow moorland plateau near Glossop in Derbyshire on 3 November 1948.
Over-Exposed was on a routine daytime flight with two other aircraft, leaving RAF Scampton near Lincoln at around 10:15am and heading to the US Air Force base at Burtonwood near Warrington.
The pilot Captain Landon Tanner and co-pilot Captain Harry Stroud were flying by instruments as visibility was very low with the area covered in low cloud.
Based on the flight time, the crew believed it had passed the hills and began to descend. At about 11:00am the aircraft hit the ground at 610m above sea level, 300m north east of the summit of Higher Shelf Stones and it was engulfed in flames.
When the aircraft failed to arrive at the Burtonwood airbase, the nearby RAF Mountain Rescue Service was called to search for the missing aircraft.
Already on a training exercise upon the Kinder Scout moors, the RAF Harpur Hill rescue team headed to Bleaklow and located the crash site at about 4:30pm, by which time the light was fading.
The debris of the aircraft was scattered with only the tail section intact and the recovery of the occupants took place the following morning and they were taken to Burtonwood.
All 11 crew and 2 military passengers sadly perished in the crash.
The aircraft was carrying the $7,400 wages for the Burtonwood airbase. The money survived the fire and was recovered at the crash site by the American Military Police...
This area of the Peak District has been very treacherous for aircraft in the past with 7 airplane crashes here dating from 1939 to 1956.
Out of the 26 people involved in those crashes, only 2 survived.
BRISTOL BLENHEIM BOMBER
Blenheim Mk.I L1476 of No.64 Sqn of the RAF was a British light bomber aircraft which crashed on Sykes Moor 30th January 1939 while on a training flight from RAF Church Fenton near Tadcaster
The crew had taken off from Church Fenton to carry out a local flying exercise, both of the crew were fairly new to the Squadron and Church Fenton so they were familiarising themselves with the surrounding area.
The aircraft failed to return from the exercise and was marked as missing
It was on the 12th February, a full two weeks since the aircraft disappeared, that the wreck was discovered by a member of a local walking club who was trying to catch up with his party.
The bodies of the 2 airmen were found some distance back along the planes flightpath, suggesting the men had bailed out but tragically, were too close to the ground to use their parachutes.

Yours is perfectly acceptable mate I wouldn't worry 😂
Will check it out. Will be fun to see the other perspective
I’ve never posted a comment on anyone’s site until now. I wanted to let you know that I’ve been watching your channel for a few months and I wanted you to know that I really enjoy the contents. I find you to be genuinely informative and you have a wonderful attitude and sense of humor. I also wanted to give a thumbs up to Finley. I can tell you’re a wonderful person because Finley adores you. I haven’t seen any recent post, I really hope you continue doing the camping and posting your videos. You’re very good at what you do. Also, I’ve turned my 81 year old mother into a fan of yours.
Thank you very much!
I agree. I am a new subscriber and I am a huge fan now!
This is such a great video! As an American, I teared up when I saw our flag there at the crash.. Not that it's my flag but that someone from over there actually took the time and care to put it there. 😭 Thank you to whomever made that noble gesture and seeing it on video from a pure, kind, loving man that is Grizzly Gaz!
Dry your eyes. For the American airmen who flew together with our kin as brothers in arms, we have a heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering bravery and selflessness that forever resonates within our hearts.
Your flag is quite welcome here in the UK
@@scottyp1348 🥰🤗
Know about this crash but never been to the site , I think I need to take a walk up there to pay respects , my grandfather was a prisoner of war in Italy, yep I'm old now 😊
@@debsday5445 🥰
I saw Ben’s version of this trip last week and have been eagerly awaiting your edit. You did not disappoint. I loved your poignant representation of those two crash sites. You are so humble and an unassuming person with wit and humor along the way.
😎
He's so amazing! Plus I love Fendy too
Poor Fendy, has more Mileage/Km than a 1974 Volvo. Gaz, I do have to admit, you and Fendy are fit and you guys aren't afraid to walk long distances for us viewers who enjoy and appreciate the beautiful scenery with amazing information that entails with the journey. I thank you and Fendy for every content videos you've done, your video gives me an opportunity to escape the NYC life and noise, your video contents is an outlet for me to unwind and vision myself being with you guys camping and adventuring. Once again thank you Gaz & Fendy. ❤😊
It's our pleasure Miguel 😉
It's our pleasure Miguel 😉
Loved this episode. Seeing those planes😪..my uncle crashed near diss in 1944 and was killed he was 23... lovely to show respect❤
Agreed
Top video Gaz. The footage of the area was superb and I liked how you narrated the back story to the crash sites. It was also good to see the banter between you and Ben. Your sense of humour always puts a smile on my face. 🙂 When you were talking about fitness, that chimed with me, as I'm that way inclined myself. When I go up hill, it's heel to toe with a stop for breath every 20 steps, then rinse and repeat, lol.
I really enjoyed watching this mate, and finally, thanks for the shout out/mention. 👍
No problem pal. Good to meet you 👍
Man who sold the world. Loved the way it hit just as the helicopter was flying over like a war movie opening. Great vid Gaz. Much love to you and Fenzy. 👍❤
Most touching when you blessed yourself. Good man.
Thanks for keeping it real grizzly! ... I use to be super fit... I am now a larger person. I get out at least every other day now building up my weighted pack 🙃 and going for a hike.. I thank you for showing everyone... you don't have to be a super fit commando to enjoy everything nature has to offer! Keep it up mate!
💪😎💪
Of course.... I know your commando background... not to mention your attack dog! (She is beautiful 😍) joking aside.. you make this available for the every man, woman, child, dog or whatever they now want to be called ... for that you have my deepest respect!
I’m glad you enjoyed this one mate! I’m also VERY glad they were some sort of vitamins you dropped in the bottle, at first sight it looked like a baggie with some whopper sized party stuff inside 😅😂 LOVELY VOICEOVER TOO gaz 😘😂
Cheers pal
It sounds like The Man Who Sold the World. I'm crap at guessing these. Didn't Lulu do a version of this? Brilliant video. Excellent presentation of the history of the crash. Very poignant and sad. The banter between you and Daley Outdoors is hilarious Mrs Slug was a little star 🌟 Beautiful scenery ❤
You got it 😉
….and Nirvana.👍🏻
I remember visiting the 3 Bleaklow sites some years back to pay respects. The B29 site was particularly desolate (and scary) when the fog just came from nowhere and closed in so quickly we couldn't even see each other. Have overflown these sites and a few others since - now that I'm not able to walk so far - can appreciate even if you came down and survived the impact that your chances of survival up there would be slim. RIP to all those that didn't get to go home. Many thanks for posting I really enjoy seeing yours and fendy's adventures
Between you Ben and English woodsman I'm trying to talk the wife into a trip to the UK to hike some trails. You guys rock.
😎
Awesome video Gaz. Thank you for all you do to share your camping adventures with Fendy and friends.🙏💜
Our pleasure!
Thank you for the lovely walk, camp, and historical tragic memorials.
The moors are incredibly beautiful.
You are making a impact with your viewers. A good impact.
Thank you.
Hope so
You do alot better than I would. You explore such beautiful areas!! I'm jealous.
You can do it!
All I can say is thanks for sharing. It was fantastic and so respectful.
I appreciate that!
That was a really respectful memorial - both of them, had never heard of those tragedies before. Have to say though it was rather bleak up there in the main. Awesome view along that valley though….
Amazing video fella! You two make a dynamic duo. Amazing job at remembering those who didn't make it home. I always enjoy the adventure! Thank You!
Brilliant Gaz, enjoyed this one bud.
Hi Gaz, big thanks for the shout out mate 👍 Loved the video, you covered the crash sites thoroughly and respectfully. I wish I'd have put a narration over my videos to give more info, will do next time. That time-lapse of the evening clouds was epic! Atb Bri.
Cheers pal. It was good to meet you and thanks for the tip 😉
Thanks for the video! Beautiful landscape!
I am susceptible to depression and live on the Gold Coast Australia which has beautiful beaches and parks on the river. Everyday, at a certain time in the afternoon, when I feel at my most vulnerable, I get out out, go to the beach and then go to the river for mental health and happiness.
It is so good to get out everyday and explore isn’t it?
I’ve lived here my whole life but have taken my natural beautiful paradise around me for granted really….until being forced by my mind to seek out paradise and embrace it…everyday.
It is the key ❤ for sure xx
Thankyou so much gaz for inspiring me. You and Fendy truly do ❤
Our pleasure Tracey 🥰
Really enjoyed that Gaz !! Love fendys jackets 😅x
Thank you.
Great video, thanks. Where I live in Wales near the Black Mountains, there are a lot of aircraft crash sites, and the one everyone walks up to see is a Wellington bomber. All of the crew all Canadian died in the crash.
Looking forward to this 👍
Hi gaz, just watched your latest video absolutely stunning views of the moors, and the information, of the two crashed sights, i didnt no, they were there, love your banter, you make laugh, and put a smile in my face, keep em coming, all the best, angie, from brummie land xxx
Loved the video, thanks for sharing!
Epic episode mate as always. Love that view
Awesome video, Gaz n Fendi ❤. Love your countryside. Thank you for the history of the aircraft tour. I also subscribed to your buddy and watched his last wk. Lots of❤ from Illinois USA 🇺🇸
I just discovered your channel, really enjoyed seeing parts of the UK, I'd never seen having been in Australia since 84', very respectful towards the crash sites and lost RAF members. Cheers guys
Really interesting vid ,loved the colab thankyou x
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for sharing your video!!! Love the scenes and Fendi too!!!!
So beautiful the views. Your dog is such a pretty little thing. The shadow of you and him walking was beautiful.
Thank you
Cheers gaz great watch. I’m finally out cooped up in my Phoxx 2 weather has been terrible managed to get pitched up and just chucked everything inside. Can’t wait to have a brew.
That storm has just sailed past me and we never got a drop! 💧
Great view of the city👍 thanks for the tour guys & Fendy:)
Brilliant video thank you for sharing
Hi Gaz and Fenzil, what a great vid, our country has some beautiful places and this is one of them, felt sadness for the people who lost their lives there most of them probably young service personnel,RIP to all of them xx
When you held hands and started skipping 🤣🤣🤣 I about spit my drink out! On a serious note that was sad they lost their lives in the crash. Another great video Grizzly Gaz
Gaz fendy totally loved it, was lovely to see you share knowledge and respect for the fallen heroes of the RAF,
The man who sold the world! - Great Bowie song (RIP). Awesome vid and great location that I must go too!!!! Keep up the great work GG and as already said, ignore the debbie downers. We miss your responses mate.
You’re my new favourite camping channel, you and anglianbushcraft are unreal.
Cheers Nic
4:54 Jesus christ gaz. that actually wasn't bad, I just wasn't expecting that 😂 you're a man of hidden talents 😂
😎
So easy to get lost up there if you are off the main path and the mist comes down. Very atmospheric.
Spooky tale is that there have been a few occasions when people driving over the pass have phoned the police saying they have just seen a plane crash up on the hill.
Keep up the good work . All the best to you and t'dog.
Great video Gaz! You really do a wonderful job with your content! Your a natural and it is really a pleasure watching your videos. I truly look forward to the notification every time you post. Thank you, keep it up mate!!!!
Brilliant, really enjoyed this.
That was a good video Gaz. The history aspect of your channel is very informative and engaging 👍...if you know you know 🤣🏴
Glad you enjoyed it
The Man who stole the Wprld. Lulu 👍👍👍👍💯💯

Thank you for everything ❤️
God bless 🙏
lived in mixxy on an off since 72...never went up waynehouse tower tho...looking forward to seeing you do it...peace
Big up you Mixicans! 😜
Watching this one now. My great uncle was the captain of an 11 man aircraft in WWII and they were shot down on the east coast of England by the Germans. All died.
The man who sold the world. Good to see another video with your pair. Nice one.
We’ve been to the first crash site ,very humbling
Great video ❤️
I saw Ben's video and have been looking forward to your video.
I visited the Peak District last week for the first time. Went up Kinder - the views were epic but it was so cold and windy on the top. Planning to go back soon. Thanks for another great vlog
Love your videos. I have learned so much especially in history. Thanks. USA. I hope you do continue your videos.❤😊
Thank you, I will
Good to know you're a Nirvana fan Gaz. The 'please don't guess this song' bit made me laugh, I was thinking myself how inappropriate it would be 🙈 Beautiful views! Love you guys together, you should definitely do more camps together 😁 Great vlog as always!
Yeah I didn't want my comment section filling up with the title of that song 🤦🏼♂️🤣
@@GrizzlyGaz 😳😳 Definitely not haha
Brilliant Gaz , You dropped on with the weather for the most part. Beautiful up there on a clear night with the City views. Another enjoyable adventure 👍cheers mate
Absolutely
I wonder why they don't install a beacon on top of the hill, something the plane instruments would see from alert, and a huge light, for night flights,
Great you just added another channel for me to binge watch :). Great video! Man love history like this. Also some more great views as well. Thanks again.
Welcome aboard!
This is maybe my 5th video of yours today! Love the content man! Great work!
Awesome! Thank you!
Love it.
We passed upon the stair
We spoke of was and when
Although I wasn't there
He said I was his friend
Which came as a surprise
I spoke into his eyes
I thought you died alone
A long long time ago
Oh no, not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With the man who sold the world
Another great video brother 👍
Such a fantastic film. Stunning views, interesting and respectful. Great entertainment, keep up the great work. 👏
Hi brother glad to see people put flowers 💐 at that place. I wish I could see it being I'm an American thanks good show be safe out there watch your six Gene Gorringe Mi USA 💙 ✌️🇺🇲🇬🇧 The British my mum is British 🙂
Great Video... thanks..
Another great Vid mate great to see the calab . Keep them coming
How sad. I’m
Curious why they never removed the material from the crash? In the US if it’s accessible they will remove the crashed airplane almost in entirety and take it to a hangar so they can figure out how the crash happened. Then they will dispose of the wreckage.
I enjoyed watching both videos back to back.
Love your vids Gaz ... Keep em coming
Another belter Gaz, mate!! Man Who Sold The World / R*pe Me were this weeks audible treats!
Another great video. I do a lot.of wreck hunting myself. I'm planning an 11.5mile one to do all of the wrecks on Bleaklow. There's 86 in the Peak district!!!
you're the nuts love every video you've ever maid and Fendy of course you also have a big pair of balls on some of the more spooky locations, i;ve had several paranormal experiences and appreciate your calm logical responce to them rather than the usual over the top shit you get on other camping videos ,keep up the real work , best wishes Sean Rowan
Another informative video with beautiful views, I love going on your journeys with you and Fendy.
Thanks for all the time and effort you put into this. Btw, I have nominated you to the X factor team because that is some voice (Micheal Jackson) you have lol.
As always, you gave us a laugh and will be looking forward to the next one. As usual, a big hug for Fendy and much respect to you for all you do. Cheers and stay safe.😎
🤣🤣🤣
Looks bloody cold Gaz.
Thank you for the work u put into your stories! I do enjoy your reactions ❤❤❤
You are so welcome
Just came across your channel. You two are a riot and lovely little mascot you have there. 🐾❤ I enjoyed this thoroughly. Beautiful scenery and lovely place for all those brave souls.❤ look forward to watching more. New subcriber watching in Norway. 🇧🇻 Btw, Nirvana is great!
Loved the views and the banter. I always enjoy your videos. I loved how respectful you were at the sites and doing your cross. Fendi looked worn out...such a cutie.
Oh! The man who sold the world and shall not name the other.... lol
Crianlarich Ben more mate there's a crash site near the summit, we experienced that feeling coming across it ,
You did great Gaz thanks for being you 😊we all love you as a person ❤❤ 🐶
You are so kind
You never fail to show gorgeous scenery!
His legs are longer gaz. Love the scenery.
I recently subscribed to your channel. Love your adventures and stories. You have a great sense of humour and I love the way you love your dog. The scenery is great too.
Welcome aboard!
Is Fendi allergic to grass by any chance? Is that the reason why she is scratching her belly all the time? Or just like the way it feels? 😊
Had exactly the same issue with the battery on my drone when i was up at Angle Tarn in March. First thing in the morning and the batteries were fully charged and stored overnight in the drone bag. Turns out that they have to be at a specific temperature to operate correctly otherwise they will report a voltage drop and force landing.
I keep all my go pro and drone batteries in my down jacket now
quality vids as always gaz,,god bless to those 24 people who perrished
Hello again Gaz...a very informative video done respectfully. Well done mate! Glad your most recent adventure worked out better than the two beforehand! By the way: man who sold the world, David Bowie and Nirvana did it too.
😎
I know what you mean about being unfit gaz. I’m the same when hiking around snowdonia. I sweat’ I can’t breath and I’m very unfit! 😂 but I love it! Another great video mate thanks👍👍
💪💪💪
Have you any idea why the crash site wasn't cleared 😕 Fabulous view, ooooooo love a tuna sarnie 😊 Manchester skyline looks amazing, like a movie scene.
You know Griz, being retired US Army and having to run many miles a day, I learned to better control my breathing. Once your body got into the swing of things, it made it much easier to do strenuous things as your oxygen intake was better managed. It was as simple as inhaling through your nose and, exhaling through your mouth when you have to put the steam on. Once it's routine, you'll be surprised the energy you're able to muster. Just a suggestion- CHEERS Mate!
Ginseng tea was also a lovely supplement..
Oh god. Another one going on about my breathing 🙄
@@GrizzlyGaz No no no- I'm NOT one of those knobs! It was offered as I've helped a lot of other Soldiers over time. It's just makes running, extended marches or physical labor much easier. Despite admittedly saying you're out of shape all of the time I still think you're doing a fantastic job yomping through the moors (Stick to the roads! Beware the moors!). 99% of the population cannot do what you do. It's not easy to do when forced- but you're doing it voluntarily. I did not mean it to be offensive in any way.👍
@@CheapDrumsGuy I just need to lose weight and get fit but I CBA 🤣🤣🤣
enjoyed that Gaz. Great trip
another brilliant video thankyou gaz fendy and ben x such a shame all those planes crashed. rip to all. fendy does alot of walking and shes so happy about it and shes only got little legs bless. how old is she gaz?
About 9yr old
@@GrizzlyGaz wow bless her she doesnt look it :)
WOW how beautiful there. Too bad for the people who died in the plane crash. I've seen Ben's video. I find yours more interesting not only because of Fendy, but also the history you tell about it. Hug to Fendy.😘
Thank you both for taking us along to remember the people lost to these crashes so many decades ago; it would not matter which country everyone was from, It was still a tragedy; seeing my country’s flag at the first site did tug at my heart but then, so did the second one! Your campsite looked positively uncomfortable, like you might slide down the hill in the middle of the night, cardboard box style?Thank you for your beautiful presentation, mate!
P.S. Talk about “Big Sky” country?
Great video, as always, one question,
How many miles did you walk?
I watched it back 5 times. It sounds like you say 827 miles,
Haha about 12.5m in total
Great narrating gaz pal good to know the knowledge behind it all 👍 looking forward to watch you climb them steps 🤣
Glad you enjoyed
