Thank you and love you Shawn. My 94 year old dad has come to live with me. He was a farmer in one of the toughest of places in South Africa. Built three homes for us over the years.
Today, we eat our dinner while watch your videos. He loves it. He says to tell you how much he respects your work but mostly, your ethics.

I know most people are like this, but I've always dreaded the day my mother would pass away, even as a young child. I knew it would break my heart because she raised us alone, and she was really the only family we had. Six years ago, she had a stroke and lost most of her motor function and some of her speech and memory. Her stroke made me realize how fickle life is, and from then on it was like I pushed the record button in my mind whenever I was with her. I treated every goodbye hug like it was our last, because I didn't know if it would be. I would commit to memory every detail in those final years, especially how it felt to hug her. I'd hug for longer and always tell her I loved her, because I knew that soon there would be a day when I couldn't. October 29th, 2021 was that day, but I'm so glad I had the opportunity to say goodbye in my own mind. It's cliche at this point, but cherish your loved ones while you can.

I love that you mentioned the "last time for everything" mindset ... It truly does keep one grounded and appreciative of the moments that make up our lives. When my children were small I never complained when they wanted me to pick them up or carry them because I knew the quiet moment of the last time that would happen would pass without me realizing it. All of life is like that until the last breath.
I so enjoy watching your channel, so many nuggets of wisdom, hard work and joy.

Thanks Shawn for - I can do this memory. I quit a very stressful job and hubby sent me roses everyday at work (10,9,8,7, countdown roses, boss was not impressed ) etc until my last day. It was his busiest day at work but he took the time to come pick me up with a suit on and a single red rose. He got a standing ovation and I got thro a very stressful 2 weeks. Love that man.

Well said Shawn, nobody will notice the color transition from walls to ceiling, they will be too busy looking at those beautiful monster logs you put in place, and each and every board you cut to perfection by hand. I can`t stop starring at those logs, remembering you carved out, and hoisted each one by hand, by yourself, no matter the weather condition, quite an accomplishment to say the least. All the best to you and your family sir. watching from Michigan.

Struck by the same thing. I have to keep reminding myself that he hoisted those immense logs by himself. He also didn't need much caulking because he so meticulously measured every log. You can't fit a piece of paper between most. I've seen cabins with four-inch gaps. Honestly, there were a few days where I wondered if it was really necessary to do so much scribing and measuring, but now we see the visceral evidence for why it paid off. Incredible craftsmanship.

Hi Shawn...I have a suggestion for content that I would think a lot of us would love. It doesn't have to be a long video. I would love to hear you talk about the differences between your new cabin and your last. The decisions. The things you've learned about building, the changes you made and why (size, height, style). Talking about what you learned and getting a second chance at it (cellar, loft, bathroom). Also to hear what input your wife had. What do you think?

Ah the "Hope Chest" my greandfather made one for my aunt. I was a kid at the time and would tease her calling it a "Hopelss Chest". When she got married she had a Hope Chest full of things she would need to set up a household. Including a few quilts my grandparents made for her.
    Thanks for the memory.
I understand about the 'last time for everything' a bit. My cousin moved to BC a number of years ago, she was 'Home' for a visit last summer...I got a call from my brother today...that will have been the last time I'll get to visit with her. Cherish the time we have with friends and family for sure.

Hi Shawn. Can I recommend that you get a co2 monitor to evaluate how your cabin does with extended stays. You might be surprised how high it gets considering how well you are insulating and sealing the cabin. The primary symptoms are shortness of breath, drowsiness, feeling tired, and mild headaches.

Ahhhh, yes. The joys of rodent populations. When my site built, stick home was constructed in '75, the framing crew cut an angled notch out of the rim joist on the north side while cutting something else. Instead of installing it showing or turning the joist end for end (siding would cover anyway) they turned it in to make it look good. Never thinking that the notch, now on the bottom, on the top block of the foundation, made an entrance for critters. When we bought the home in 2000, the entire basement, attic and walls had been infested. Drop ceiling basement concealed the error from inside. Home was sold unoccupied (owners moved to Vegas) at a discounted price, as it was on the market for at least a year, empty, and most people just walked away, wanting a move in ready home. Always looking for my next "project", I couldn't pass it up. It's on a great piece of land. 23 years later, little did I know that this was ALL my next projects. Still working on fixing everything that was wrong (mechanicals first), additional building projects as needed and now, replacing some worn out original repairs finished while raising the family and working. Memories made. Memories to come.

Watching your videos is like reading Cooper or Longfellow. I recently acquired a copy of a book called The Story of Hiawatha . . . adapted from The Song of Hiawatha (Longfellow) for children. I had a copy when I was a child. The story reminded me of how far humans have gone in their efforts to destroy the Earth. You and your family are that ray of hope that we may still learn to cherish our home.

it's easy to take our modern lives, as well as our loved ones for granted. but i think that the more often we reflect, the more often we are thankful for all that we have, and have had, the happier we can be as all that changes in front of us, and the more confidence we have when living in the here and now; depending on our own self reliance.

That's a wonderful wisdom for natural life to live as it's the "last time for everything". Spiritually speaking it's even more beneficial.

Hello Shawn and Cali from Australia! Happy New Year, this cabin is sooo much more than the other one, although I enjoyed the first cabin procession you have done so much more already with this one! Maybe you saw where improvements were needed so this property is now going to be the end product of all your dreams, and maybe nightmares too! I am sure it is going to be comfortable and a wonderful home for you for a very long time! Have enjoyed watching and will continue, so as usual, give Cali a hug for me, take care and bye for now! 😃 👋 🇦🇺
