It bothers me a little that both he and you prefer BIRDS OF PREY to SUICIDE SQUAD. Because insofar as the first is a sequel to the second, the original did Harley Quinn correctly (ironic, since in that movie she is not the main character and is second-billed at best). Just forget about the Joker, forget about the Enchantress, and focus on Harley for a moment. In SUICIDE SQUAD we see her as she really is: a normal woman held semi-permanently captive by a demented vaudeville-shtick persona. But in BIRDS OF PREY, she IS the persona - despite having left the Joker, who presumably was the reason she became like that in the first place! Seriously, you could have given Krusty the Clown her role in BIRDS OF PREY and the movie would have been hardly any different. You should feel sorry for Harley in BIRDS OF PREY, but you don't; she's a freak! I don't doubt Margot Robbie's tremendous skill as an actress, but an Australian adept at becoming a Brooklyn "yenta" stereotype should be equally skilled at portraying a woman with multiple-personality disorder, which is what Harley Quinn is. In BIRDS OF PREY she has only one personality, and it's a personality no human being over the age of six actually has.
i think the reason why harley is very fond of cassandra cain is because she always wanted a family/child of her own just like what they’ve shown in “harley’s dream” in suicide squad.
In the comics and in Injustice 2, Harley explains she has a daughter called Lucy, who's also Joker's daughter, and in times, she's really fond of kids. She stops fighting Black Canary after finding out she was pregnant and explained that she didn't want her daughter growing up with 2 insane parents, so she protected Lucy by letting her grow up elsewhere; to the point where Lucy now thinks Harley's sister -Delia- is her mom, while Harley's her crazy aunt. She left Joker a full year trying to hide the pregnancy, and never noticed that Harley wasn't there. Harley may be crazy, but she has her sane side too. So, in a way, I thought that Cassandra was Harley's way to fill in that mother role she wanted with Lucy, but couldn't have. I thought their relationship was cute in the end, because I genuinely believe Harley is happy to have Cassandra in her life.
I like the name birds of prey for a few reasons but the main one is women is normally called stuff to do with birds for example, chicks, and adding in prey makes them feel week
6:55 She is afraid of using her powers. She didn't embrace herself. She got those powers from her mother. But she died being a Hero so she didn't want to end up like her. That's why she didn't use it but when she does it, it's so awesome. The overall build up leads to it makes the scene so impactful.
I thought bop was actually pretty fun to watch. I really did like how the movie jumped around which showcases how scatterbrained Harley can be. I did like Harley's and Cassandra's relationship and thought it was pretty cute. Maybe because it reminds me of me and my big sister who is pretty cool. I love Margot's portrayal of Harley since SS and see that she genuinely enjoys the character. She even does a lot of the stunts herself which is very impressive and did enjoy the fights scenes some of which were good fun to watch. Ewan as Black Mask was really cool and quite intimidating to me probably cus I've met guys like him, but it's totally not Black Mask at all. Maybe me coming from a girl's perspective in real life when I was in school a lot of emphasis of girls gaining status and symbolic capital within their peer groups was based on having a boyfriend and once he leaves she is pretty much regarded as not very much without him. So seeing that blown up to criminal/villain proportions does make sense and thought it was interesting to take it on. I'd say the movie is pretty good. Best movie in the world? No. Really bad movie deserving lots of outrage manufactured and non-manufactured? No. It's a decent watch though. Will be buying it blu-ray when the price drops as I do with all movies I want. Would be interested to see your take on Parasite.
So many people overlook this movie and its sad bc its probably one of the best films DC has ever released. Maybe not the best but let's just say I'd much rather watch Birds of Prey 5 times than rewatch either of the Justice League movies. [btw lets also give a hand to the costume department bc they really put in the work for harley especially]
The reason everyone hates Cassandra Cain in this movie is because she's a slap to the face to Cassandra Cain from the comics. In the comics, she's the greatest martial artist in all of DC. She could even kick Batman's ass. Also, since she was single mindedly raised to fight since she could stand, she has no education, therefore, she is illiterate and mostly mute. She also becomes Batgirl at one point. In this movie, she's not illiterate or mute, can't fight, and has no chance in hell to be a crime fighter. She has absolutely nothing to do with the character she's based on in an even bigger way than how Black Mask is presented in this movie. Not to mention she isn't a character, but a plot device. You might as well put the diamond in a box. That's why she's hated so much.

Suicide Squad is better upon later viewing. Plus it has great cameos by Flash, Bruce Wayne, and Batman. It seems like Josstice League, SS was also interfered with by studio suits a lot, to where its a different film than the Director intended.
Hi guys! Sorry for the slow turn around with this versus video. I have been spending the last week and a half editing the video and making changes that would remove the countless copyright claims I was receiving. And in my opinion, its surprisingly resulted in a video which seems much more fast paced even though the video is exactly the same length as it was when I first finished it. I had to edit and upload 13 DIFFERENT versions of this video to FINALLY get the copyright claims removed. Its a shame that my original vision for the review won't be seen but I wasn't going to make you guys wait any longer to get this review. You have been patient enough as it is. Really, thank you SO MUCH for your patience guys. You have no idea how much it means to me. I really appreciate it. The NEXT Versus video is Sonic VS Detective Pikachu. when i read that Ewan McGregor was the villein in Birds of Prey i had high hopes for him to be a great villein but when u said his character is unfaithful to the comic books i was little disappointed but i thought he was a bit medicine & intimidating in several scenes of the film but also funny a little
Great video Eric! Even with Birds of Prey, I still think that DC has been doing a great job in the past couple years because they let the directors do their own thing and not interfere. And I hope they keep doing that because that's what made Aquaman great, and Joker fantastic. Now, I am really looking forward to Wonder Woman 1984 and in general, I am much more look forward to what DC has in store for the future rather than Marvel, now that the Infinity Saga is over.
Well I think that people hate Cassandra Cain for how much of a disservice she was to the source material. In the comics she was bloody awesome and had an interesting story, a girl who was trained to be an emotionless killer trying her best to be a hero under batman's wing. So turning this fascinating character into an annoying street urchin kinda felt like a middle finger towards the source material. So that's why most of the hatred comes from
People hate Cassandra cause she is not at all like her comic book counterpart. She is supposed to be a prodigy fighter, trained by some of the best fighters in DC and here she is relegated to a pickpocket, it's fucking weird
Yes I did. I absolutely LOVED Xiaolin Showdown as a kid. And the music where Omi turns evil is so epic, dark and depressing. So when I talk about things in a movie that are ESPECIALLY BAD, I usually use that music.
The reason why no one complained about Deadshot being race-bent was because most people had never heard of him. And even if they had, they probably still would not have complained, because the original Deadshot was incredibly boring. Floyd Lawton was originally just a (white) man dressed as a magician (top hat and tuxedo), which was already a supervillain cliche back in the late 1930s when Deadshot was created. Could you ever imagine the military wanting to recruit a STAGE MAGICIAN as a weapons expert?
I’m not watching Birds of Prey because some of the fans of the movie attacked the Sonic Movie a week before it even came out and spread lies about the Sonic Movie like it being homeifobic and racist even tho there is an African American character in the Sonic Movie and it was not homeifobic so yeah, happy I saw Sonic instead of Birds of Prey. Harley Quinn: Hillarious, Wacky, colorful, had tons of fight scenes. Suicide Squad: Boring, Slow paced, contrived amanda waller litterally created her own monster, There is one fight in the middle and a big one at the end, Harley Quinn single handedly carries the movie.
It was my brothers eleventh birthday, I was nine. We went to Oklahoma to watch movies. I got to see Ms. Peregrine's house of peculiar children for my birthday, a very scary movie for a 9 year old, my innocent being. While my brother got to see Suicide Squad. Lol
You mentioned that you didn't get why people hated Cassandra Cain in this movie, that she does her role fine....but also you said that you were disappointing that they took Black Mask and didnt do justice to his portrait that the people who did the Birds of Prey film, didnt knew who Black Mask is........WELL thats is the main reason why people hated Cass in this....she is NOTHING LIKE HER COMICBOOK counterpart, and if you think they ruin Black Mask.....Black Mask is Joaquin Phoenix Joker in comparison of the way the MASSACRED poor Cassandra Cain......she is the most badass Batgirl, her story is super dark, she have probably the saddest of the back stories of all Bat Family members....groom since she was a baby to become only a weapon, her father never teach her anything else other than FIGHT, to the point she didn't knew how to speak or communicate like a normal person, only knew how to communicate by Fighting, and after her very first successful murder at the same age of Bruce, she knew that was wrong and escape her father until Bruce and Barbara Gordon took her and show her other ways to use her deadly abilities and let her become Batgirl.......now tell me, did ANY of what I say is in this film......ANYTHING......yeah that is the equivalent of taking X23 and make her a damsel in distress that only serve the plot for been rescue or capture because she have something important the villain have......the BUTCHER Cassandra and the fans HATED that so much. I pretty much decide to not giving this movie a chance only for the way the destroyed the character, she doesnt have anything of Cass, only her name and asian look, nothing else, and that is a major insult to people who have been waiting to see Cassandra ina proper show or serie or film or game.....and this is the first live action adaptation of her.....talk about missing the point.
There's only one line from Joker in Suicide Squad that I like, and that's when he said "I'm an idea." It reflects the insane mind he has and how no one really knows what his origin story is. We don't know who he was before his transformation. We don't know if he was an Arthur Fleck, where he was a peaceful soul who wanted to bring joy to the world, or if he was a Jack Napier, where he was a mob boss. His past is multiple choice. His past is an idea. He is an idea.
The drunk montoya part was cuz harley wasn't taking montoya seriously untill she got cuffed. So she kicked her out of the window. The 4th wall breaking was harley in the comics and a nod to kill bill at the end
Hey buddy. Yeah I did like it. I thought it was very smartly directed, the soundtrack was great, the story was very good and there were quite a few GENUINELY shocking moments. I just wish the movie had a slightly bigger budget because I felt that the movie was limited with how far it was able to go with its Invisible Man concept. There were no shadows being cast by his suit, and he was SO silent throughout the movie even though he should have made several sounds when he was sneaking around. But on the whole, it was still a good movie. What did you think of it?
Eric Carter Thanks so much for replying man. I really liked it. I agree that a bigger budget would have made it even better. I have to admit though one part in the restaurant with the sisters has to be one of the most shocking moments I have seen from a movie in a long time. I personally wouldn’t change a thing about that scene. I really wish that this was the movie that came out as the Dark Universe’s debut film instead of 2017’s The Mummy. It would have helped them greatly.
The only reason why I disagree with the black canary thing is because that’s how it was in the comic books you had bat girl which in this case will be Cassandra you had huntress and the question which obviously are Helena Bertinelli and Renee Montoya that is the most common book accurate thing ever with bat girl black canary and the question

Movie makes it pretty clear why canary doesn't use her powers _earlier_ ... bc she doesn't use her powers at all and when she finally cuts loose it takes everything out of her. Once she becomes a proper heroine and starts exercising her muscles then it'll be an issue to keep an eye on
I have a question for Comic people! For context, the majority of what I know about Black Canary is from Arrow, but I thought that she was a Hero / Chaotic good Vigilante, am I wrong? If I'm not, why would she be helping villains in this movie?!

If i were to watch family DC movie, Shazam would be my first pick, but if I were to watch on a date or movie night my pals Birds of prey would defo be more entertaining film to date
A versus video I think you should do is between the dark knight and joker. Both of them are widely known for having the best versions of the joker so I think this would be a very interesting comparison to see which version told it’s story better, which was more realistic, and (most importantly) which truly has the best joker.

I just want to say that I really appreciate these British-narrated review videos. Not only do they tend to be funnier than their American counterparts, but the overall narration is of much higher quality. I like Eric Carter's speaking style much, MUCH better than the average American narration, which is almost always a long, grotesque, train-wreck string of a single sentence that can run several minutes in length and in which every tenth word is "like." Sure, I'm aware that there are British people out there who also talk "surfer-style," but at least they make an effort not to while the majority of Americans just never give a damn - and this is coming from me, an American myself! (Hell, I even prefer the pompous 1930s newsreel narration style to what I hear in America nowadays. As artificial as those newsreel reporters came across, at least they sounded intelligent and not as if they just dunked their heads into a huge basin full of peyote.)
They dislike Cassandra Kaine because in the comics she's daughter to lady shiva, part of the bat family, and is a hardcore assassin although i still like her
Cathy Yan and Margott Robbie gave it there all. And the movie itself wasn't bad in the slightest but could have been much better had it felt more apart of a greater DC Universe like the cartoon counterpart. Like Batman and Joker cameos and actual involvement in the story. Possible cameos from other Batman rogues. And Gotham City feeling like Gotham City. This should've been a Batman spin off more so than a Suicide Squad spin off. That all being said I'd still give it a decent score of 8/10 praising the tone, charactets, and action sequence.
Great video, Eric Suicide Squad: 3/10 Birds of Prey: 5.5/10 Characters: Many of the adaptations are terrible but at least the character arcs that are there are more rounded than Birds of Prey's. Villians: Enchantress is horrible, Black Mask is a poor adaptation of an amazing villain and the writing is lacking but at least Ewan McGregor performance makes up for it. Action: Birds of Prey easily, while could've been way better considering they got the people behind John Wick but it's still solid and better than Suicide Squad's. Editing: Birds of Prey (is that even a contest) Overall Birds of Prey is a deeply flawed movie and doesn't even feature the right member of the team (uhm... Batgirl) but at least it's better than the turd of a movie that was Sucide Squad.

when i read that Ewan McGregor was the villein in Birds of Prey i had high hopes for him to be a great villein
but when u said his character is unfaithful to the comic books i was little disappointed but i thought he was

Great video Eric! Even with Birds of Prey, I still think that DC has been doing a great job in the past couple years because they let the directors do their own thing and not interfere. And I hope they keep doing that because that's what made Aquaman great, and Joker fantastic. Now, I am really looking forward to Wonder Woman 1984 and in general, I am much more look forward to what DC has in store for the future rather than Marvel, now that the Infinity Saga is over.

In the comics she was bloody awesome and had an interesting story, a girl who was trained to be an emotionless killer trying her best to be a hero under batman's wing. Yes I did. I absolutely LOVED Xiaolin Showdown as a kid. And the music where Omi turns evil is so epic, dark and depressing. So when I talk about things in a movie that are ESPECIALLY BAD, I usually use that music.
The reason why no one complained about Deadshot being race-bent was because most people had never heard of him. And even if they had, they probably still would not have complained, because the original Deadshot was incredibly boring. Floyd Lawton was originally just a (white) man dressed as a magician (top hat and tuxedo), which was already a supervillain cliche back in the late 1930s when Deadshot was created. Could you ever imagine the military wanting to recruit a STAGE MAGICIAN as a weapons expert?
I’m not watching Birds of Prey because some of the fans of the movie attacked the Sonic Movie a week before it even came out and spread lies about the Sonic Movie like it being homeifobic and racist even tho there is an African American character in the Sonic Movie and it was not homeifobic so yeah, happy I saw Sonic instead of Birds of Prey. So Suicid Squad is the winner in my book. Also nice video Eric.

Harley Quinn: Hillarious, Wacky, colorful, had tons of fight scenes. Suicide Squad: Boring, Slow paced, contrived amanda waller litterally created her own monster, There is one fight in the middle and a big one at the end, Harley Quinn single handedly carries the movie.

It was my brothers eleventh birthday, I was nine. We went to Oklahoma to watch movies. I got to see Ms. Peregrine's house of peculiar children for my birthday, a very scary movie for a 9 year old, my innocent being. While my brother got to see Suicide Squad.

I pretty much decide to not giving this movie a chance only for the way the destroyed the character, she doesnt have anything of Cass, only her name and asian look, nothing else, and that is a major insult to people who have been waiting to see Cassandra ina proper show or serie or film or game.....and this is the first live action adaptation of her.....talk about missing the point.

We don't know who he was before his transformation. We don't know if he was an Arthur Fleck, where he was a peaceful soul who wanted to bring joy to the world, or if he was a Jack Napier, where he was a mob boss. His past is multiple choice. Hey buddy. Yeah I did like it. I thought it was very smartly directed, the soundtrack was great, the story was very good and there were quite a few GENUINELY shocking moments.
I just wish the movie had a slightly bigger budget because I felt that the movie was limited with how far it was able to go with its Invisible Man concept. There were no shadows being cast by his suit, and he was SO silent throughout the movie even though he should have made several sounds when he was sneaking around.
But on the whole, it was still a good movie.

Eric Carter Thanks so much for replying man. I really liked it. I agree that a bigger budget would have made it even better. I have to admit though one part in the restaurant with the sisters has to be one of the most shocking moments I have seen from a movie in a long time. I personally wouldn’t change a thing about that scene. I really wish that this was the movie that came out as the Dark Universe’s debut film instead of 2017’s The Mummy. It would have helped them greatly.
I know this sounds dumb, I think Jared Leno fits the role of The Riddler more than Joker.
The only reason why I disagree with the black canary thing is because that’s how it was in the comic books you had bat girl which in this case will be Cassandra you had huntress and the question which obviously are Helena Bertinelli and Renee Montoya that is the most common book accurate thing ever with bat girl black canary and the question

Movie makes it pretty clear why canary doesn't use her powers _earlier_ ... bc she doesn't use her powers at all and when she finally cuts loose it takes everything out of her.
Once she becomes a proper heroine and starts exercising her muscles then it'll be an issue to keep an eye on

Cassandra Cain is my favorite Batgirl. After seeing her in BoP, I’m even more grateful that the Batgirl movie with Barbra Gordon got canceled.

If i were to watch family DC movie, Shazam would be my first pick, but if I were to watch on a date or movie night my pals Birds of prey would defo be more entertaining film to date
A versus video I think you should do is between the dark knight and joker. Both of them are widely known for having the best versions of the joker so I think this would be a very interesting comparison to see which version told it’s story better, which was more realistic, and (most importantly) which truly has the best joker.

Eric Carter I have a few questions. Firstly, have you watched Crawl? Second, considering that you said that your now a big fan of Godzilla in your 2014 vs KOTM versus video, have you gotten around to watching the other Godzilla movies, and if you have, which one was your favorite?
I just want to say that I really appreciate these British-narrated review videos. Not only do they tend to be funnier than their American counterparts, but the overall narration is of much higher quality. I like Eric Carter's speaking style much, MUCH better than the average American narration, which is almost always a long, grotesque, train-wreck string of a single sentence that can run several minutes in length and in which every tenth word is "like." Sure, I'm aware that there are British people out there who also talk "surfer-style," but at least they make an effort not to while the majority of Americans just never give a damn - and this is coming from me, an American myself! (Hell, I even prefer the pompous 1930s newsreel narration style to what I hear in America nowadays. As artificial as those newsreel reporters came across, at least they sounded intelligent and not as if they just dunked their heads into a huge basin full of peyote.)
Honestly sucide squad should have been like sucide squad assault on arkham.

Cathy Yan and Margott Robbie gave it there all. And the movie itself wasn't bad in the slightest but could have been much better had it felt more apart of a greater DC Universe like the cartoon counterpart. Like Batman and Joker cameos and actual involvement in the story. Possible cameos from other Batman rogues. And Gotham City feeling like Gotham City. This should've been a Batman spin off more so than a Suicide Squad spin off. That all being said I'd still give it a decent score of 8/10 praising the tone, charactets, and action sequence.

Suicide Squad: 3/10 Birds of Prey: 5.5/10
Characters: Many of the adaptations are terrible but at least the character arcs that are there are more rounded than Birds of Prey's.
Villians: Enchantress is horrible, Black Mask is a poor adaptation of an amazing villain and the writing is lacking but at least Ewan McGregor performance makes up for it.
Action: Birds of Prey easily, while could've been way better considering they got the people behind John Wick but it's still solid and better than Suicide Squad's.
Editing: Birds of Prey (is that even a contest)
Overall Birds of Prey is a deeply flawed movie and doesn't even feature the right member of the team (uhm... Batgirl) but at least it's better than the turd of a movie that was Sucide Squad.
