- Battu, pronounced "ba-TEW" a classical ballet term meaning "beaten." A ballet step is made more technically difficult and visually spectacular by adding the beating together of the legs during the step. Then, the word "battu" is added to the name of the step. For example, "jeté" becomes "jeté battu."
Music: "Prestige" by Howard Harper-Barnes

Rudolf Nureyev, in full Rudolf Hametovich Nureyev, was born on March 17, 1938, Irkutsk, Russia, U.S.S.R. He died January 6, 1993 in Paris, France. He is buried in the Cimetière de Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, France.
Nureyev was a Soviet-born ballet dancer whose suspended leaps and lightning quick turns were often compared to Vaslav Nijinsky’s legendary feats. He was a flamboyant performer and a charismatic celebrity who revived the prominence of male ballet roles and significantly widened the audience for ballet.
Nureyev, who was of Tatar descent, spent his youth in Ufa, the capital of the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (now Bashkortostan republic, Russia).
He began his ballet studies at age 11, left school at 15, and supported himself by dancing. At 17 he entered the Leningrad Ballet School, where he was taught by Aleksandr Pushkin. He was an outstanding but rebellious student, refusing to join the Komsomol (Communist youth organization), disobeying curfew regulations, and learning English privately.
After graduating in 1958, he became soloist with the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Kirov (now Mariinsky) Ballet and danced leading roles with its touring company. While in Paris with the Kirov Ballet in June 1961, Nureyev eluded Soviet security men at the airport and requested asylum in France. He said later that the rigidly organized Soviet ballet had limited his opportunities to dance frequently and to perform in a variety of roles.
After his defection he danced with the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas and made his American debut in 1962, appearing on American television and with Ruth Page’s Chicago Opera Ballet. Later that year he joined the Royal Ballet (London) as permanent guest artist, but he never became a member of a major dance troupe in the West, preferring to work with various companies on a temporary basis.
Nureyev became well known as Dame Margot Fonteyn’s favourite partner. Dancing with her, he interpreted such roles as Albrecht in Giselle, Armand in Marguerite and Armand, and Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake. He was a popular guest artist in companies large and small throughout the world. Also working as a choreographer, Nureyev reworked Swan Lake (Vienna, 1964), giving the dominant role to the male dancer. His version of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet (1977) was produced by the London Festival Ballet (now the English National Ballet), and his Manfred (1979) was performed by the Paris Opéra Ballet. In 1980 Nureyev staged The Nutcracker for the Berlin Ballet, and in 1981, owing to a further resurgence of interest in dance in Italy, Nureyev staged his version of Romeo and Juliet at La Scala, with Fonteyn as Lady Capulet. Nureyev’s capabilities also extended to modern repertoires, and he performed in works by Martha Graham, Murray Louis, and Paul Taylor. Graham created the role of Lucifer (1975) for him, and in 1978 Nureyev appeared in the American premiers of Canarsie Venus and Vivace, choreographed for him by Louis.
Nureyev became an Austrian citizen in 1982. From 1983 to 1989 he was artistic director of the Paris Opéra Ballet. He continued to choreograph for the American Ballet Theatre and the Paris Opéra Ballet even as his health declined from AIDS-related complications. He died in 1993 at the age of 54.

The fabulous and legendary Nureyev!
Nureyev was breathtakingly beautiful and one of a kind.
Merci, Rudi. Tu resteras UNIQUE!
Ballet!.... Ballet’s for softies... Really? The strength and total control during those performances is simply unbelievable. Absolutely amazing.. What a talent. Shame life is so short 😢
goes beyond athleticism
ABSOLUTELY...ANOTHER REALITY INDEED ...🙋💗
.
Explendido,fantástico Nuryev

Always a pleasure to see this extraordinary, unclassifiable, hypnotizing dancer again. Congratulations and thank you to you, my very dear Pam, for your collection of jewels, nuggets from the beautiful world of dance. In addition, you sublimate each of your works of music that often intoxicates me, as is the case here. Compliments. With gratitude and admiration. Joe from Lausanne who wishes you a very good weekend
Your short is amazing : )) Edenic. Thank you very much for these reminiscences of ineffable talent, of beauty. Sublime archives. I definitely love this amazing video on Nureyev. Your choice of music, this marvelous archiv... : waw ! So emotional. Thank you very much my very dear authentic soul of artist Pam. From Switzerland, Friendly, Joe
As I said before, the pure joy of dancing together with an incredible technique. 32 fouettés in a row !!!! 🎉 ❤
Those were not fouettes! Those were entrechat quatre!!

Amazing
What amazing footage - wonderful. Thank you Pam 💞💞💞💞💞💞
sublime
Once, I regarded Nureyev as more of a showboat than masterful technician. Famous mostly because he defected spectacularly. I always compared him unfavorably with Mikhail Baryshnikov because of Baryshnikov's speed and the height of his jumps.
I was wrong on all counts, making bad comparisons. The two were just different. Nureyev had an actor's mien, he knew how to play the role and his nimbleness is stunning. Yes, he did love the spotlight on and off the stage, but that's also part of his job, I guess. Practice and rehearsal were primary in his career. He never stopped working.
Great comments. ❤
@@cynthiafletcher9845 Thanks. And thanks to Pam for putting this video together for our enjoyment.
Thank you Pam!
@@DavidLeBlanc thank YOU David, it was my pleasure and an honor to even attempt to do him justice. I must admit I thought as you did for the longest until I started delving into his life, story, career, etc. He was truly amazing and is truly a legendary representative of ballet.
I thought this about him too. I was born in late '59. Perhaps if I had been a few years older and seen him in his prime I would have understood his greatness more. I saw him dance in the late 70's when he should have been retired. He was sloppy and effortful then. He should have stayed away from choreography as well, but I cannot fault his earlier greatness, charisma, and work ethic. Baryshnikov will always be the platinum standard for me, but Rudi was great in his own way, wonderful dance-actor.
We cooked for Rudi and Margot
he ate everything and took seconds
Battu: Rudolf..por siempre el mejor. Dora -Bs As.
You out did yourself with this one, Pam! Thank you for the beautiful compilation and the detailed history in the description. I have watched this twice already!

Thank YOU Cynthia. Your comments always put pep in my step.
Divine archive !
What a pleasure to watch!
Inolvidable e inimitable.
Saludos,
@@isabeldiezlangre9411 Isabel,. Why do you suppose he had such disdain for women?? Wonder what your opinion is ....do you think he was a Russian chauvinist ? I know he's been called a narcissist. But I don't think they're the same. Also ..what happened to his one sister who was deaf??? Did she pass away at a young age,. Too?
As the poet said, 'What a piece of work is man!' Gorgeous. And he knew it...
Köszönöm 🙏🥰
brilliant
Fabuloso
