A wonderful and captivating narrative, first heard by this (male, Antipodian) correspondent at age 14. Some time later, I heard "The Famous Flower of Serving Men", and have wondered ever since at the experience of girls impersonating boys - and vice versa - in the annals of Greater British history. Our folk song warriors have carried this beguiling flag for some time now, so am wondering if any academic person has contained this fascinating "Other" history into a published tract. In the mean time, I'm more than happy for illustrious folk people to bring these brilliant narratives to us!
