that Longines Avigation BigEye is the most underrated watch in the game... been saying that
Lindsay Video completely agree
Yes I have it, LOVE it and won't sell it
Yup. Especially with the price. Understated+alluring. Great combo.
Longines.Affordable price, elegant design
They had some magic up their sleeves back in the day ;)
Great video @IDGuy, this helped seal the deal on my purchase of the 765 AVI. I tried to consider the big eye due to the huge price difference but I knew I would just end up unsatisfied.
I think it is an absolutely stunning piece! Hope to have it soon to add it when I finally get around to sending in ome submissions for the show.
I'd take the Longines any day.
However, looking at the price of Breguet Type XX being more superior to the Longines, Breitling, and Speedmaster at a similar or lower price make me think.
Longines Big Eye.
I love the look of the Breitling and I'm sure the build quality is superb.
Excellent comparison. I think the Breitling pips it for me 👏🏻
Longines all the way! I cannot explain why, but for me it just looks more classy. Perhaps it‘s the plainer bezel and the thinner log with.
I am a Professional Pilot and own the 2 brands.
For this type of watch, definitely Longines BigEye, which I own. Will never sell it.
Took me a year of research before choosing it over others.
- For a "Classic Chrono. Pilot watch" , Longines BigEye is THE watch, Breitling were not doing watches in the early days of Aviation, Longines YES. So i buy legitimacy for a Classic.
- the aesthetic to me, looks much better, much more sporty/elegant
- the Lum is amazing, visible during the day, the green is very refreshing.
Not a dial pretending to be aged over the time like the Breitling.
- the engrave of the plane at the back is so classy
- thickness is perfect for a Chrono, not too thick
- the in house movement is top of the top
- pushers are thicker/robust (same as before pilot watches with their gloves)
This watch will gain lots of attention, very difficult to re-produce it at the this level of right balance,
and impossible to buy the early days watch maker for a Classic like other brands are doing.
Again, Legitimacy pays off.
BigEye! I find more beauty in asymmetrical designs.
And that visual complexity to the dial is so attractive, totally agree!
Longines all day ;)
Great video @IDGuy . I think Breitling and Longines did good on these two reissues. However, as many have said, given the secondary market prices, I'd probably go for a Breguet Type XX or XXI. It is good to see more attention being placed on pilot watches other than the usual A/B/Time only watches everyone associates with Pilot Watches.
It's a very good argument. For the price and the value you're getting from a brand like Breguet it's a no-brainer. Some of the purists don't believe the Type XX to be a Breguet though ;) Thank you as always for the comment, brother. Love your Fender Bass ;)
@@ID-Guy Thanks!
@@ID-Guy Ignoring the Breguet name, you are getting a beautiful amazing chronograph
If these were the only two watches I could choose from, the Breitling would be it. I see more functionality in it as an aviator's tool.
An actual pilot in the chat seems to disagree with you. Would be interesting to get your take with him to see how you see more aviation functionality in the Breitling as an aviator's tool.
Also how can anyone complain about a column wheel for 1,700, Longines ftw! Breitling in house nothing fancy
Would love to see a break down of what you think of the new Zenith a3818 remake. There is video on YT that shows it off to a much better light than the pics on the two sellers websites. It looks a stunning piece and only 100 being made, im amazed its not sold through yet today! Maybe not a good time release such a watch given the market forces this week? What a stunner (to me). I may have one on order... ;)
PS I didnt wanna link the vid as it's not from you and it felt wrong. Easy enough for you to find but worth a breakdown from you IMO.
Another fantastic video IDGuy. Both of these watches are truly amazing vintage style pilot watches, and both are extremely attractive. However, if I were in the market for this style of watch, I would chose the Breguet Type XX, the quintessential 50's pilot watch.
Breitling all day. Simply because it's my favorite brand vs a brand that I like a lot, but don't love.
Plus, the Breitling is powered by a B09 movement. One that is manual-wind and I reckon would fare better in the long run.
If I had a choice of any of the watches that you showed in this video it would be the Blancpain Air Command. I just love it! Between the Breitling and the Longines, I would opt for the Breitling. As you pointed out the Big Eye sub dial ‘cuts off’ some of the 2 and 4 numerals which gives the Breitlings dial much more symmetry and easier legibility. Two lovely watches here that are no doubt the latest look in historical pilots chronograph reissues. Yet another top video here my friend. Always provoking great discussions within our hobby. ✊
GIMME AN AIR COMMAND! Just imagine what your collection would look like with the piece... It pretty much ticks every box... Flyback, High horology, Functioning bezel, Chronograph, Sports Watch, Beauty... Thank you as always for the comment, brother! I've been having a good think about what watch I'll be pulling the trigger on at the end of the year and there is one piece that keeps coming to mind (it's actually quite cliche, but hey! You can't beat a classic)
Recently added the Longines Avigation BigEye to my collection and I must say it will likely get the most wrist time for me in 2022. Brand cachet, very good build quality and a rich heritage from Longines' history of watchmaking make it a winner for me.
Is their actually any clarity now from which time period the Avigation's ancestor originates?
I own the Longines. Lovely watch, but the lume isn't great especially on the numerals which fade quickly. Also, I know it's a debatable point, but it would have been nice to see the well finished movement in the Longines. I like the fact neither watch has an ugly date window.
I actually prefer the Breitling . It just looks cleaner and more legible to me. Also sub-dials that cut off numerals drive me nuts. They just look poorly thought out.
Excellent analysis as always. Bravo 👏🏻
Always a pleasure, Doc. It wasn't my best, but it's crazy how similar the pieces look at a glance! Have a terrific end to your week, sir!
I recently purchased a Longines Heitage Military 1938 watch and I have been impressed with their reissue series. Good value and quality with an eye towards the seriously accurate reissue of important Longines references from the past.
I love both of these, but I love the price of the Longines more. Hope to buy the Longines at some point, tried it on at an airport once and it wears beautifully. Almost bought it there and then and have regretted not doing so ever since. I do wish the big eye was manual rather than automatic though.
I agree 100% about the manual wind considering the vintage/military look of the watch.
I lean twords the big eye, but there's bits on the Breitling.... to be honest, if the two of them had a baby, oh yeah. That would be the one .
I know I know, it's between two and I pick the third. The hypothetical.
But I'll buy the Big eye.
Another good video !! I like them both , for the money longiness !!👍
Longines has more character with that big eye. By contrast the breitling looks a bit boring
Just add more complexity, put the Breguet Type XX in the list.
Two things I'm quite disappointed about Breitling: Hesalite crystal & closed case back.
At first glance I thought the Breitling was a Type XX.
The Breitling is a more refined version of the Longines. I bought a BigEye in October of 2019 after almost getting a Breguet Type XX Aeronavale. The Longines is a lot of watch for the money. Got it for $1600 on Amazon. The lack of a fly back and non lume BigEye subdial is something I can deal with.
Longines for the overall win. Breitling looks superb but horrendously overpriced...not to mention piss poor reliability and CS.
Both have heavy markers every 3 minutes on the minutes register, which is unusual and doubly so in this comparison because they each count a different number of minutes on those registers - the Breitling counts 15 whereas the Longines counts 30.
The Breitling omits 15-minute markers from its hours register, so like the Speedmaster which omits 30-minute markers, might be less easy to use as a chronograph.
I own a Big Eye and love it and in the end when all said and done the Breitlling iis a more expensive higher end watch with a better watch (not by leaps and bounds), probably close to twice the price?Still would love to have both, but I didn't settle picked up a clean used Big Eye is because I loved the way it looked, trusted reseller box and papers, only real use I've seen is the strap and even that wasn't worn out. If I was to buy Breitling I'd save my dollars, Euro's, Pounds etc.. and buy the Breitling Navitimer, yes it's large and a tad expensive but still a lot of watch in comparison to others and not that much different than my current generation Omega Seamaster 300m in price. They're easily had and AD's will discount.
Before buying the Breitling, have a look at my comment
I would love a Blancpain Air Command, but the price makes it out of the question. The Longines is a true bargain.
Aren't those tiny at 37mm tho?
How would you say the Hamilton Intramatic panda chronograph compares to the Longines Big Eye? Which is better? Thanks
Could someone provide a the model name of the 'sector' dial longines small seconds from 1:15 ? Absolutely stunning.
**Update** found it longines heritage classic
L28284732 (that should do it). Very cool little watch.
@@faisalingalong if you don't have the cash for the master control :P
Saoirse Frawley Or maybe you might want to spend less and put those extra pennies towards other pieces 🤷🏽♂️
The JLC hasn't been in stock anywhere for ages, which is disappointing. But I tried on that longines recently and man was it a beauty
Master Control all over chrono but 6k and you got that tiny weird date? No thanks! Longines is so classy on this one
Bought a new BigEye from a grey market dealer on Amazon for $1600 in 2018. Been my daily home wearer ever since. I was homing in on a Breguet type xx 3800 when the BigEye was released. Captured all the details I liked from the Breguet. No regrets. I like the Breitling also but not going to pay that kind of cash. Even with the BigEye now retailing at $3000 the Breitling is three times more expensive. Not seeing the value there.
What's is yours opinion pilot watches Bicompax military's:
-zenith pilot cronometro tipo cp-2
-The Breitling 817
-Heuer Bundeswehr Pilot's Flyback Chronograph
-Sinn 158
-Dodane type 23
-Junghans Meister Pilot
-Zeno Chronograph 2030 Ref. 8561BH-A1
-Union Glashutte NORAMIS chronograph
-Bremont ARROW BRACELET
-Pioneer PIONEER TwinControl
-BALL Trainmaster Cannonball CM1052D-S7J-BK
I really like Longines as a brand, but would choose the Breitling as a tool. The 12 bezel and illuminated counter push it over the finish line.
The Big Eye smokes the Breitling. Forget the price. Id bet you the Big Eye keeps better time as well. Those bighands don't tell the time, the command it! Soo glad they didn't use faux patina lume. Excellent choice.
First glance Longines looks better.
I think it's about the space allocation on the dial (you get a lot more visual complexity for your buck) ;)
Excellent comparison review, but being bias because I love Breitling & owning 2 watches, the Breitling dose it for me, plus I think you get more bang for the buck with the rotating bezel. 🙏🏾😌Be Safe;-).
Breitling for me
Tough one, as both are nice. However, for me the Longines. It is more of a statement piece for a pilot style. Also a great value at that price. But I would like to toss another, bolder one into the race. The black Zenith Pilot Type 20 Rescue Chrono, 03.2434.4069/20.I010, although $ 8 k.
You have chosen the pieces carefully and like you said Big Eye is much bolder which is absolutely correct to me. However while comparing you could also brought Sinn Artic Chronograph. Being little thicker on the side I have quite a bit of aim but Longines offers value for money. My only griefs? 30m water resistant for Big Eye while Sinn offers a 200m depth rating.
The Longines lacks balance in its design. Huge pushers and a big subdial at 3 o´clock make it really disproportional
Great watches. But what I really would like to find is the Longines grand vitesse... not produced anymore.
Both nice!
The big eye is... Delicious. That minty luminova goes so well with the chocolate leather strap.
Breitling no comparison, better finishing, movement esthetic.
Great review looking forward too your version of these watches...
Love the Longines but prefer Breitling. I fly with an Oris
Hands down longines. It is way more beautiful
Much prefer the Breightling, just needs the old "proper" logo with the wings. The Longines looks messy to me, especially with the chopped off numerals & overly heavy lines on subdials. Both beautiful tho. Cheers 👍🏻
IDGuy. Really love this new Breitling 765. “Buy what you like”. I love manual wind and no calendar to clutter the dial. Also, thin rotating bezel and no cut up numbers. This may be my daily wearer if I get it. Nice video mate.
Amazing video. Need more videos like this in the world!
The Breitling is a class above here.
If the Breitling had your added 369 plots and the Luminova was white instead of fauxtina it’d be the first Breitling I’d consider actually adding to my collection... mostly Sinn, Oris, Omega, Tudor, Seiko and some micros.
How would you be able to fit 369 plots though without either making it a 55mm case 😅 or making the chrono subdials extremely tiny to make space for the plots. At that point you might as well remove the subdials rendering it no longer a chrono LOL.
Prefer the Breitling cleaner dial and rotating bezel. However for the price you can't beat the big eye
Longines!Interesting dial.
They also remind me of Dodane
Big eye
Both are very interesting
The Longines, is beautiful in pictures but is a way to large and thick watch in real life...really wanted to have one, was really let down when seeing how humongous big and thick it is...due to the rotating bezel and hand wound movement the Breitling might be less intrusive sizewise.
Ron Power that’s what she said.
Render images are different in life. I have seen two in the flesh and bought the breitling because it was superior in almost all aspects.
Like both brands and own from both. Prefer the longines here but tough choice.
The Longines is a phenomenal value compared to the Breitling.
The longines looks much better to me.
A lot of people in the comments section are leaning towards the Longines, which is natural as it is considerably cheaper, underrated and an awesome looking watch. However, if you have had the chance to handle and compare these pieces in real life, the difference in fit and finish is immediately obvious, i.e. the Breitling is simply on another level. A more fair comparison would perhaps be between the Brequet type XX and the Breitling. The Brequet is definitely the most iconic of the two and perhaps the best option. However, the service cost of the Brequet type XX is simply ludicrous and a deal breaker for me personally.
Breguet Type XX or Sinn 103 Ti or Undone vintage chrono (on line customized...ok, with meca-quartz only, but you get a so much nicer look)
The Type XX is so close to this new Breitling, and the Sinn is a German gem. I'm also for Meca-Quartz movements ;) Thanks for the comment Denis
Longines ALL THE WAY,,,,,,BIGEYE RULES !!!!!
Breitling can’t win this head on battle
I have both the Longines BigEye and the rose gold AVI 765 1955 re edition. The Longines is more practical with its sapphire crystal and much more legible dial. The AVI is a great looking classic aviator in stainless steel but not worth three times more than the BigEye. I see them used for around $5k so they depreciate pretty bad. I got my rose gold AVI 765 used for less than half retail.
