Another great episode. I am really new to KFG, so have lots to catch up with. I agree that had Bruce Lee NOT suddenly died young, he wouldn't have become "Bruce Lee" as we know him. I think Van Damme's career and life show a possible trajectory that Bruce Lee's could have taken had he lived. They are pretty similar, IMO. Van Damme also burst into the public consciousness with a handful of incredible movies, and with the same screen presence and charisma that Bruce had. The difference is that Van Damme didn't die suddenly after doing Bloodsport, and so we have witnessed his subsequent awful movies, his failed marriages, his self destruction through drug addiction, and of course, his growing old. He's now in his early 60s. Because he didn't die young, he doesn't have any Matt Pollys or John Littles writing books about him or making documentaries about him.

Great episode. Thanks for answering my question sifu.
Yes it was the late James Demille thanks for the correction.
I did hear too that Bruce & James weren't on good terms after he left Seattle. Story I heard was James went to see Bruce to "talk" as Bruce didn't want James using his name to promote his school anymore. James being a young thug at the time knew he couldn't beat Bruce so brought a gun as back up...ooohh
It was resolved amicably it seems...
You never hear anything about Jesse or James visiting LA or keeping in touch with Bruce like Taki. Makes you wonder if there was bad blood there. ✌

55:00 That was a great question. Just my two cents. There are some WC books that should be grabbed if anything for historical reasons as they are no longer in print. (Some are multiplying in price--- one I know is definitely going upwards of $400 online) Just one more cent, of course your WT family and followers know this but I just wanted to remind others that MA books are best used as a compliment to learning from a qualified instructor from the system in question. Some WC books I have in mind simply (and sometimes deliberately) do not provide essential perspective needed that only an instructor can provide.

Love the channel! I always liked the way Randy Williams taught Wing Chun the best. Traditional but not too traditional.
It was so great to see some wing chun being used even by bigger name fighters like Anderson Silva and even Conner McGregor used a lot of JKD concepts and techniques. When I started training MMA I basically stopped using my JKD and Wing Chun, although it would come out to save my ass occasionally in sparring.

    • @AztecUnshaven

    • @0713mas
      @0713mas 2 года назад +1

@@AztecUnshaven That's Awesome! I remember thinking that Segal looked like he was using some Escrima/Kali or even Wing Chun like patterns in a few of his movies. We cross trained some Aikido with the Wing Chun school I was studying at back in the 90s. Wing Chun is so well structured, that again although I never actually intentionally went into Wing Chun mode while doing hard MMA sparring. I truly couldn't imagine not having learned the concepts of the system. Like kuen siu kuen and pac da, the slow attack and flow drills are absolutely transferable to combat as is sensitivity training like chi sao. I am although of the opinion that modern traditional martial arts have intentionally or unintentionally preserved mostly the advanced root of the styles. If you take someone who knows nothing & never been in a fight and put them in a fight they likely won't do too well but if you teach a fighter who has the basics of kickboxing and grappling a traditional system like Wing Chun they will undoubtedly be able to apply it and enrich their fighting abilities!

Impressive explanation of Bruce's death! I remember reading Bruce was reportedly having trouble sleeping. Which was another reason why he was using hash. Makes sense a lot of body builders experiment with coke to keep body fat levels low. Also being a stimulant, it would likely mess with a persons sleep patterns. Not to slander Bruce at all but it's a pretty rational theory.

Hey Alex, I've got a more complicated question in regards of Wing Chun History:
My sifu always told us, that Yip Man learned from Leung Bik, who learned from Leung Jan who comes from Guolo. He had learned from two different teachers who were part of the Red Junk(? = Rote Dschunke). The Red Junk were sailing opera singers, which was just a disguise because Kung Fu masters were supposedly "politically persecuted".
So this is just a set up for the History of Guolo, Wong Wah Saam getting taught the "special style" because he was a a lot smaller than others being taught etc etc.
The question is, how much of that history is true? Not once anywhere else did I read anything about opera singers and shit, but for some reason my teachers say stuff like "maybe the yee jee kim yong ma comes from standing in a rocking boat", the long staff was a good weapon because it was basically part of the boat, the knives were easy to hide under costumes" and so on.
I just need to know. Thanks!
PS: I really want Dre to have to read this lmao

I enjoy your podcasts and insights because you have clearly curated your knowledge carefully and are not afraid to revise your opinions based on new or newly found facts. The question about Hash in this podcast seems to have skipped over one of the premises stated in the question. It is a question that bears heavily on the "heat stroke" theory of BLs passing. I fully agree that logic strongly suggests that 5/10 & 7/20 1973 events are connected. Frequently, the Heat Stroke theory posits that 5/10 & 7/20 1973 were hot days and that the 5/10 dubbing seesion was in a sweat box without AC. On 7/20 the Heat Stroke theory holds that BL was energetically demo'ing scenes from Game Of Death @ BTP's apt. Question: Do we know if BTP's apt had AC? If so it casts doubt on the heat stroke theory and it is a fact that should be brought forward. May it be well with you.

Perhaps if addressed in a Cultural Anthropological way with qualitative research methods in earnest, scientific way... A format for this is an interview format, interviewed by someone very knowledgeable on the subjects to be able to ask relevant questions- you, of course, letting the current proponents address their own styles and their perspectives of the differences of the others in their own ways. The delivery medium? Perhaps print or documentary film style. Could be fantastic! Of course, it could be a huge cluster. But, perhaps it would be fantastic!

A draft where the protagonist was blackmailed to retrieve this treasure on top of the Tower of Death . On an early part of Game of Death, Bruce's character was ambush by martial arts hinch men. 2 men held him arms & a 3rd tried to 👊 him. He front kicked the 3rd guy with high heeled superfly 👞 ( back in the 70's they were the thang & Bruce was a sharp dresser) a rival gang leader got Bruce's character to reluctantly lead a small group of martial arts Associates . The Gangster abducted Bruce's sister & he had to do what he had to do to save his sister.

@35:05 That being the genisis of video games is not actually Bruce Lee being ahead of his time at all, because it is directly from the history of Wing Chun. Early masters of WC had actually done that whole "graduate to the next level after each master". So if video games do that (indeed they do), then they got it from Wing Chun history via a fellow who has reported it to you in his flik.
@36:55 "Tower of Death is coming off a bit preachy" well not really at all if you compare it to LONGSTREET. That is LITERALLY fifty thousand times more "preachy" than the multiple brief sentences in Tower of Death.
"It wouldve been a stinker" ...and yet the Longstreet got serious critical praise, not stinker critiques. And remember that LongSt is wayyyyyyy more "preachy". WAY more, and recieving no stinker label. It got the opposite

Re: Ascending Pagoda WC, the source is the Martin Scorse produced film "Grandmaster" about Ip Man by Wong Kar Wei.
As for you calling it "game of death", it is my understanding that Bruce Lee titled it the Pagoda of death or the Tower of death (per the actual story) and Americans repackaged it as game of death w/that horrid debacle. And by this the ACTUAL title is Tower of Death. Or is this not correct

    Hypothetical
Dre is bouncing at the club. He’s dealing with an agressive old lady and sees, out of the corner of his eye, a mouse run by with a tattoo of the number 42 on its neck. A gangsta mouse. At that moment, the old lady clocks Dre with her tai chi. After the stars clear, Dre sees someone who looks very familiar. He recognizes him as Dreison!
Without saying a word, Dre and Dreison both point at the moon, as if each were encouraging the other to view all the heavenly glory. Dre gets distracted staring at Dreison’s finger, causing their fingertips to touch. Creation implodes.
After a millennia of eons, a new universe forms out of that hinge event. It’s 2021 and things are largely the same, except there reigns a ruler supreme: Dreiceman. He’s a terrible rapper, but everyone is afraid to tell him so. He trained under Dai Sifu GM Dragron and is unstoppable.
Somehow, Alex Richter is the only one who remembers the old universe, the way things used to be.
The other major difference? Bruce Lee is now younger than Alex and is his student.
Question for KFG: How would you train up Bruce Lee to destroy Dreiceman? His raw potential could make him a great student, but his personality traits could make him a horrible student.

I have a question for the next episode (I listened to the podcast Already).
    Hypothetical:
You are driving home after a hard day of training, tired and exhausted. Dozing off, unbeknownst to you. You wake up to a wall coming closer and you yell "OH SHIT I'M GOING TO DIE".
As you crash frontally into the wall it is revealed, that this wall was, in fact, a portal to the past. You drive right through it and your car jumps out in some random turf that looks like Chinatown, but could also be Hong Kong. You get out of your wrecked car, not knowing what's just happened. "Shit", you say. Followed by "Keep it eaaasyyyy".
So you walk around, it's night already and you find yourself in a dead end street with garbage bins and stuff, but as you look into the dark you see some men talking menacingly. You sneak up and hide behind the trash and listen them speak in Cantonese. It's about something criminal and bad. Turns out its the triads, and the biggest boss of them all right there. It's July the 10th 1973. Just 10 days before this boss dies from a cocaine overdose.
