    I remember Verstappen having a spin at the top of a crest during qualifying and the commentators telling us that it was related to losing the stability of air flow under the car. The plank was added after Senna and Ratz due to concern that the teams were running the cars low and hammering the suspension and floor for best aero. Measure plank wear and eliminate the problem. But it seems counter to add titanium skid plates right around the holes where the plank is to be measured. Since titanium is so hard, it would take a lot more wear on the skid plates for the plank to also be impacted. The sparks look cool, but I don’t think it’s best for safety. Teams shouldn’t be able to bottom out the car suspension against the track, skid plates etc.

Even for the weights and tire pressures they would need hours before the races. They do random checks which means that every team needs to be concerned about running their cars legally. To add some extra sauce to this... the last couple of technical directives mentioned in the video, especially the one after the summer break, Mercedes was vocal about that they were one of the teams pushing for the change. Mercedes were sure RB wasn't not compliant before and were saying this would surely slow RB down because they had to lift the car. But as RB has stated they did not have to change a thing about the car, it was already complaint and when it turned out RB wasn't slower this was not to the amusement of Mercedes. And now hilariously Hamilton gets disqualified because of it... something with karma and such?

Or that one doesn't count because he doesn't bother Max?

      Extending tests can be difficult, F1 is always on a time crunch, especially with just a week between races. if they could, teams would probably love to drive the car across the line, straight into the truck and go to the next track.
      So keeping the cars even a few additional hours can be difficult, and at least they still checken quite nicely, just going for the top 4 instead of singling people out.

    • @FrancisFjordCupola
      @FrancisFjordCupola Год назад +18

      No. Nothing needs to be done. The regulations are there. They are part of the safety precautions to prevent deaths like those of Ratzinger and Senna happening again. What you have here are two drivers: Leclerc did manage to get a pole position (but screwed himself over with an entirely bonkers one-stop strategy). Hamilton got closer upfront and was more competitive than usual. Both of them outperformed their teammates. Now we see that part of the reason of their success was by running their cars too low. It is on them that they perform within the regulations. They don't? They get disqualified. They took their chances, and they took the resulting penalties.
      And if they had fears of being caught running too close to the ground, they could have broken park ferme, replaced the plank and started from the pits. Though that would probably not help that much if they still drove too close to the ground. Because they would still have worn through their planks.
      And no, quit being dumb, check out how many rules and regulations there are. Then picture yourself checking one single car, then picture yourself doing all the checks on all the cars. Then realize that the teams have to move on to the next GP and have to start a whole packing procedure. The FIA can't inspect everyone and everything without disrupting the logistics.
      Two drivers wanted to go fast, put their cars too close to the ground, ruined their planks and got disqualified. Other top contenders did not.

      Random checks have been done to Mercedes and Ferrari before and they passed.
      Likely at least for Mercedes they got caught out by bringing the floor upgrade this weekend and then went right into setup for qualifying. Then saw the wear and thought “it will probably just make it”. The downside of a floor upgrade on a sprint weekend showing its teeth.
      Red Bull knew the problem because it was discovered at Eau Rouge (aka why they lifted their car). There was also the technical directive about the floors that was made less than a month ago that directly was targeted at the floors. This included the blocks they mentioned but also the stuff they were putting into the board that would leave patterns in the track showing the floor wear points (remember how prior to recently you could see yellow markings in the asphalt on the racing line? That). Basically teams are a bit more blind now leaving them more prone to possible mistakes.
      The fact 2 different teams were dinged for it would lead to the possibility that Mercedes and Ferrari weren’t the only ones who failed, they were just the only ones caught. I would bet only McLaren and Red Bull were the ones who were innocent because they use a similar suspension concept, and as a result, had to adjust similarly to the rough track.

    Great analysis by The Race as usual. I honestly understand that all the cars can’t be checked all the time, and that they don’t check at every race. Having said that, and given all the factors contributing to this weekend, it feels unfair to “randomly” check one from each of the top 4 teams and not any of the other teams. 50% failure rate signals that this was probably a prevalent problem throughout the field & they should have checked more cars. Some of the cars that benefitted from these two that were disqualified could have possibly been running in an illegal state as well. Very unfortunate for those drivers in my opinion. Nothing here suggests that there was an attempt to bend the rules to gain advantage.

    • @ijmad
      @ijmad Год назад

      It's not random. As it says in the video they can chose to scrutinise cars they suspect might be on the fringe of legality during the race or previous events. Picking one car from each of the top four fastest teams seems very reasonable.

    For those confused about why more cars weren’t checked, the rules at present do not permit them to test the sister car if one is found to be illegal.
    The FIA does do ‘some’ tests on ALL cars, such as: tyre pressure, steering wheel, high rev limit, oil consumption, plenum temp, IVT temp, ES, energy release & recovery, MGU-K, MGU-K & MGU-H speed, MGU-K torque, chassis, torque coordinator, torque control, rear brake pressure, brake temp warnings, race data, clutch paddle, MGU-K use, ES charge status, formation lap speed, PCU configuration, tyre starting pressure, specific tyres used, fuel pressure, engine cooling pressure, fuel flow meter and fuel mass flow.
    There’s actually only a handful of tests that are NOT done on all the cars.
    It’s important to understand the rules of the FIA and actually read the post race scrutineering, before stating things as ‘facta’.
    Before you comment (those who aren’t happy about this), first ask yourself, would your reaction be the same if it was RB? And also, Toto himself said he agreed with the DSQ. Do you think you know more about the rules and what is fair in the sport than he does?
    Everyone is allowed their own opinions. But let’s try and keep the discussion rational and not reactive ☺️

      @driesvanoosten4417 Год назад +1

      It's not obvious that this is true. Ride height is not the only factor in plank wear. If you take more curb, you have more wear. Which automatically puts you more at risk if you make a longer first stint, as you will have to take wider lines and thus take more curbs. And doing this with a car full of fuel leads to more wear. Max had a short first stint. That may not be a coincidence, as RB seems more aware of plank wear issues, which makes sense, because they have been driving their car low for two seasons now. Under the old regs, they ofcourse were usually driving very high on the rear suspension...
