It's not super common but it's also not that weird, there have been many times that the best F1 car of that year has that very quality. Ross Brawn talked about one of his old Ferrari's being so good they would deliberately run a downforce setting low enough to make sure they were quicker in a straight line than their rivals at the time, whilst carrying enough downforce that they remained the fastest in the slow corners. He said it was all possible simply because they had the best downforce/drag ratio at the time. Basically they didn't try to run their car at it's optimum setting, they just made sure they were fastest in the speed trap and fastest in the slowest corner and had a balance the drivers liked, with that the car was always too quick and the drivers were always comfortable pushing it. As a counterpoint, I've heard David Coulthard talk about his Adrian Newey designed McLaren's from 1998/1999 and he talked about how they weren't his favorite F1 cars despite them being some of the best he ever had in his career (relative to the field) because to get the best from them their setups required "too much understeer" and he just didn't like that balance in his car. If he dialed it out, he have up too much performance. My favorite part of this is that Lewis said the Mercedes were NEVER that much faster, even in the hybrid era, meanwhile the silver arrows in the hybrid era were 4 SECONDS FASTER PER LAP than second place.
At least we got to see Hamilton and rosberg fighting, redbull need to put someone who can fight max in the other car. Checo is a legend, but he’s no match for max unfortunately
For a part of that era they were also running detuned lol. Note the reliability issues didn't start to creep in till Honda/RB caught up in 21 forcing them to run at full power.
Newey and his team are amazing!! Also, if I understand you correctly, Red Bull is managing the down force increase to be less extreme so they they can actually gain higher overall speed by making the car a little bit less effective less draggy, less downforce at top speeds and doing that with the edge of the floor? Which in turn allows them to run a softer suspension and get rid of the porpoising as well. Thanks for the insight I really interesting video 👍👍👍👍
Remember Brazil 2021 when he drove past everyone as if he was overtaking lorries on the M25? It was hailed as “his greatest drive ever”. Good to see the Merc propaganda engine is still in full force. Completely ignoring his advantage for nearly a decade.
Redbull looks to have a floor where the centre of pressure is quite rearward, i wonder if this is easier to stall with the change of ride height caused by the loss of downforce through opening the DRS, stalling the floor.
I love how 'The Race' can publish a video in which 90% of it is about why the assumption on which the video is based actually is wrong or at least negligible. But instead of saying 'Oh nothing to see here, waste of time' they just put the wrong assumption in the title and post it anyway

Lewis: Never seen a car so fast. How quick lewis forgets how fast he was in Brazil in 2021 when he was flying past everyone due to that engine and aero package.
Engine Yes .... Aero not so much. Merc was never good at aero exactly why they are suffering right now. They use to build 3-4 different concept cars for a season and picked the "Less draggy one" slapped on the +60 kw PU and left the rest of the field in dust. That and the fact that the Ferrari & Honda PU has played catch up until 2021 has gone out the window, and with the cost cap it sort of rubbed salt in the wounds.
I would like to see a slight shake up in DRS. That being no DRS use for qualifying. It is an overtake assist feature, so let's allow it for overtaking only. Not sure exactly what it will change but it seems more initiative of the philosophy behind it at least.
The Red Bulls in this ground effect era just look fast. It’s purely coincidental but often in history the fastest cars have looked the sleekest and smoothest too. Newey is renowned for his aerodynamic genius so it’s no surprise really. As much as I don’t like Red Bull from an ethical standpoint they make a bloody fantastic racecar from time to time.

Funny how a company that owns two teams is seeing a massive improvement for their primary team and drastic decline in their secondary team as soon as the cost cap really started to kick in. In a sport that takes everything to win sacrificing your other team is most definitely on the table.

And this is excatly why we shouldn't have new rules made simply to nerf Red Bull. Engines across the top teams are roughly equal, budgets are equal, Red Bull simply just built a really good car and should be rewarded for it.
what do you mean? new rules try to mix up the grid every time, because one team winning for 5 years straight kinda sucks. Also, the new aero testing limitations try to give the teams behind in points more time to improve and catch up.
@@Appletank8 The playing field is as equal as is possible, in fact it's already set against RB (sliding aero development scale). This was really informative. Thanks, The Race.
Trying to steer away from the Hamilton beef apparently going on in the comment section here. Great video and explanation, makes me more appreciative of how well designed and functional the car is and how much work and design/engineering goes into it.

Ok that’s the closest I’ve come to actually understanding what’s going on here
Newey and his team are amazing!!
"...as if he was overtaking lorries on the M25" 🤣🤣🤣👍
I can watch these types of f1 stuff all day. Great video
What a fantastic explanation of what Red Bull are doing. cheers.
Redbull looks to have a floor where the centre of pressure is quite rearward, i wonder if this is easier to stall with the change of ride height caused by the loss of downforce through opening the DRS, stalling the floor.

Hello my friend the Holy Grail "W11".. That won 13 out of 17 races
if rb win all their races your comment will age well
I love how 'The Race' can publish a video in which 90% of it is about why the assumption on which the video is based actually is wrong or at least negligible. But instead of saying 'Oh nothing to see here, waste of time' they just put the wrong assumption in the title and post it anyway
“I’ve never seen a car so fast”
Because you were literally sitting in the fastest car for EIGHT straight years until now my friend. Surprise?
If there is anyone to complain you should be the last one in the line, lucky bastard.
Lulu is right, he never saw a competitor car so fast as the 2022/2023 RBs, you know, he was in their position for almost a decade, he just stormed the field with the unlimited resources cars that Merc threw at the grid 😂😂😂
I don't think ferrari or RB had any limit on the resources either. But yeah merc did produce the fastest f1 car till date
Mer and Ferrari would spend the most with red bull spending a lot but not as much like 500m be 300m
@@jacobbrassard2776 I wonder how much this pace is down to rb overspend (if at all) tbh. We all know money is king
@@tuttutteddy8889 that overspent did about nothing, Merc shot themselves in the foot with bad design, and RB struck gold by having the one man that pioneered, over 30 years ago, the technology that F1 is using today.

Adrian Newey, you sir, are the aerodynamic genius

not like Mercedes or one of their drivers to distort facts to try and get an advantage.

Just like Alonso said last year, he only knows how to drive in the front 😂
5:00 Does not stall the beam wing as much as reduce the effect of the beam wing. A stall would increase the drag, a reduction in effect reduces both the downforce and drag simultaneously.
The f1 community has become sooo toxic that on a video focusing on RedBull’s genius engineering feat, everyone is focused on drama
Agreed - I have come to hate F1 because of it.
Interesting concept of the dimmer switch in regards to how extra downforce at speed is managed. Neat video, thx!
To really get a close to perfect analysis. You would need different drivers in different cars. This explanation is simple
Adrian Newey and his team. Genius.
Lewis: Never seen a car so fast.
How quick lewis forgets how fast he was in Brazil in 2021 when he was flying past everyone due to that engine and aero package.
Exactly
Engine Yes .... Aero not so much. Merc was never good at aero exactly why they are suffering right now. They use to build 3-4 different concept cars for a season and picked the "Less draggy one" slapped on the +60 kw PU and left the rest of the field in dust. That and the fact that the Ferrari & Honda PU has played catch up until 2021 has gone out the window, and with the cost cap it sort of rubbed salt in the wounds.
Newey is , no doubt , an aerodynamistist par excellence .
I would like to see a slight shake up in DRS. That being no DRS use for qualifying.
It is an overtake assist feature, so let's allow it for overtaking only. Not sure exactly what it will change but it seems more initiative of the philosophy behind it at least.
Jos will be coming for you now you explained all his sons cars special features. 😂
"ive never seen a car so fast" says lewis hamilton, forgetting the last decade in the mercedes pulling 20 second gaps in only a few laps
such a typical lie and pretend by black person
The Red Bulls in this ground effect era just look fast. It’s purely coincidental but often in history the fastest cars have looked the sleekest and smoothest too.
Newey is renowned for his aerodynamic genius so it’s no surprise really. As much as I don’t like Red Bull from an ethical standpoint they make a bloody fantastic racecar from time to time.
The Drs flap should close when the cars are alongside each other that way we can actually have drivers trying to outbreak each other at the end of the straight
what’s crazy is that the Merc isn’t even that bad, it’s the third (now 4th) fastest car on track
imagine if Hamilton had to drive the McClaren, he would retire mid season
It's funny, how 3 of 5 teams who is in top 5 are the slowest.
slowest on straights yes, but they are very strong in the corners, you can have more downforce which causes more drag slower straights but stronger in the corners. Or you can have a low downforce so fast in the straights and slower in the corners
@@Lewis_M397 exactly. Its all relative. obviously BM is a new f1 fan.

I wonder how much of Alpha Tauri’s budget they spent developing this for the Red Bull. Funny how a company that owns two teams is seeing a massive improvement for their primary team and drastic decline in their secondary team as soon as the cost cap really started to kick in. In a sport that takes everything to win sacrificing your other team is most definitely on the table.
Mercedes has the same DRS system on a test bench already as well they already run it on the wind tunnel and sim thats a fact as well
Ironic you choose the quote from the guy who drove the W11 and W05.
As f1 fan we want merc to feel helpless for 10 years so they can understand what we feel in those 8 years

Why does Hamilton moans so much? 😂
He's a victim have you forgotten...
Because he's always visiting your mom' bedroom when your dads away 😂 😂
He moans about as much as all the other drivers. It’s because the media want to talk about him as he’s the most famous f1 driver on the grid. Same with Max everything he says is blown up in the media. The more famous the more the media wants to write about them.
It's a statement he made mid-sentence. The media have a party on such things. It's actually a compliment to RedBull if you ignore your own negativity.
Because I want my 8th title and Max won’t let me have, tears flow and foot stamps…..
In previous years of domination Mercedes for instance had obvious advantages, their engine and their budget, which other teams couldn't just copy. Now RB has built a better car using similar engines and budget, other teams have simply dropped the ball, RB shouldn't be punished for that.
