You can use this same process for drawing anything from objects to people, anytime you want a sense of 3-D depth.

Hi Emily, I have recently started learning to draw in my retirement years. I liked drawing as a child and after showing my grandson a few tips, I found I wanted to draw again. I've followed a few different teachers on RUclips and just now have found you. I like your tutorials and have subscribed. Cheers.

Really enjoy you great insight into the world of drawing. I love your videos. Maybe you might teach us older folks how to dray heads, like the boggling Loomis method. I would like to understand this principle but I find the teachers are all wackos and after a few weeks they all turn into comedians. Bad comedians. Please help us out. Thanks. Matt from Ireland by way of San Diego. Keep up the great work good lady.

Thanks Matt from Ireland, glad you enjoy the videos and I will try not to turn into a wacko comedian 😆 I actually have a poll coming out tonight asking for suggestions on next videos and Loomis method is one of them so make sure you vote if you see the post. While Loomis method is useful it can also be very restrictive when you are learning to draw so I do have some insights that may be different to some of the other tutorials around. I cover Loomis method briefly in my How To Draw Realistic Faces course which will very soon be included in my Sketch Club membership...just if you are ever interested 😊
Otherwise stay tuned as Loomis method may very likely be coming up soon on my RUclips channel (poll dependent)...

I have been drawing for several years but I am still a beginner. I have drawn cups, bottles, fruits but I have problems to choose what to draw next. I am a little afraid to choose something too complicated but I am bored to draw cups and bottles again. I have some problems to start (too perfectionist, fear to make it wrong). Somehow I have noticed that it is easier to experiment on some pieces of paper that I don't value. I have drawn a dragon once on such paper and dragon is much more difficult to draw than cups or bottles. But in my sketchbooks I try to draw perfectly and it causes problems to start sketching. I mean the most difficult part is to sketch.

      Hi Igor,
You are quite right about it being easier to draw on old pieces of paper. Sketchbooks especially carry a lot of perceived value and a blank white page can bring a lot of pressure with it and perfectionism is something all artists struggle with at one point or another. The most important thing for improving is to just keep doing the work so if drawing on old pieces of paper works for you then go with it and keep them in a folder.
Drawing objects can get boring and I'd suggest trying something living - plants are a bit easier in some ways because they don't have to be perfect. Birds are also a more interesting subject if you can find some photos that you like....probably much easier than a dragon :) :) Thanks for watching.

My problem is I can’t see the black and white and tone on a color object. Even if I ask myself which part is lighter or darker. I have taken pictures and changed them to black and white, but I feel like that’s cheating.

Yes it can be tricky to see tone when your subject is in color! I'd recommend working on trying to see just two values first, the light and the dark side - squinting really helps with this. Try to see the main shadow (on the object) as a shape. Sometimes its easier to see all the in-between values once you've spent some time shading just the two values first, the light and the dark side. Dont think of using a black and white version as cheating, its a good way to learn, but probably a good idea to have both a color and a black and white version on hand so you can see how the color translates. It gets easier with practice but sometimes I will still look at a black and white version if Im not sure about something :)
