The ship design wasn't bad. My biggest gripe is with the registry number. It should have been an SS or USS instead of an NX. Your thoughts on them using an NX class instead of the Franklin class does have merit and would have saved them some work.
Next to the NX class (and later the Columbia class) I think that an upgraded form of the Freedom class could have served well as a lighter ship class (in the frigate or scout role(s) maybe) working to support the heavier classes in the fleet. With its smaller size (and probably smaller crew) I could see this being a good 'budget' option for situations that don't need the heavier (and more resource intensive) vessels. I like the design as a precursor to the NX class but I feel that the 'window' and green screens are too low-tech for the period as they are a thing of the past in our current era.
Maybe someone at Starfleet felt the monochrome displays were more efficient and less distracting when designing the class. Considering the dim lighting of the ship overall, it may have been a practical design choice. Though certainly on a writing standpoint, it was used solely to demonstrate the ship's earlier design to audiences with something the audience would easily recognize as archaic.
With the Freedom class being a small ship, they could have built several of them for the Romulan War just as they did with the Daedalus. I can see there being more of this type than NX and Intrepid type.
Freedom-class initially featuring nacelles in the down position before the script of Star Trek Beyond required them to be flipped above the saucer section for a launch sequence in the film.
JarJar Abrums and Kurtzman are not clever enough to have used the NX class for a call back. It would highlight how much better Trek was before Kurtzman.
Justin Lin and Simon Pegg crafted that movie. Abrams was already destroying Star Wars and Kurtzman was on his way to ruining tbe prime timeline with Discovery. The choice of the Franklin was their creative choice. Though I agree an NX would have been a better callback.
@ Technically Kurtzman holds “creative control” and JarJar unleashed the “Kelvin Timeline”. Others may have technically helmed other “projects” but JarJar gave us emo Spock, Frat Boy Kirk, McCoy practically erased from the trinity, and raving b1t(h Uhura crow barred into every scene and situation in an awkward, forced relationship with Spock when her and Montgomery Scott had canonically had a thing since TOS.
@@theAverageJoe25 People like you are not fans, you are tourists. You can like Star Trek as created by Roddenbury, or you can like the low IQ work of JarJar. Yes I call that jack a$$ JarJar because he is death, the destroyer of IP. Though I will give him credit. He got legions of people obsessed with “Lost” only to ultimately disappoint them. not the biggest fan of this type it look strange but i like the idea of it beeing like a prototype vessel before the nx01 would arrive and other ships in starfleet like poseidon and yorktown
I think also this design was probably upgraded substantially during its life, which is why while some aspects are more rudimentary than the NX, others (such as having an actual Transporter room) are more advanced. The NX would have been a better call back, but I get why the chose to create the Franklin instead from a creative standpoint.
I think you can lean into some world building. It would originally have had its own class based registry, possibly NQ-1, with each pre-Enterprise class getting it's own N series. However, after joining the Federation the Earth ships were all temporarily reclassified under a single NX sequence necessitating the older ships to be added in with anomalously higher numbers. Eventually all Starfleet ships from member worlds were brought under a single Unified Star Ship (USS) registry.
While I do like the Franklin, as it allows for a natural progression of Starfleet’s development of warp drive, an interesting alternative choice could have been the NX-02 Columbia, since in Beta Canon it did go missing and wasn’t discovered until just the start of the Dominion War.
Since it's the Kelvin Timeline the Freedom class feels like it would be the NX-class of that reality. After finishing the video it seems the Freedom-class is more less a Pre NX in look. You could easily add impulse engines on the rear to connect the pylons together.
I think the NX would have been to big for what the movie runners were going for, an Intrepid or the Warp Delta like others have suggested would have worked imo.
Anything that happened before the Narada incident occurred in both universes (theoretically). The Enterprise era should be the same in both timelines. The Franklin should be part of the history of both the Prime and Kelvin universes. (Though there has been speculation that the effects of the changes might have affected times before the encounter as well, that hasn't been officially confirmed). Would be interesting to see how the same situation resolved in the Prime timeline. Certainly something Strange New Worlds could play with if they chose to.
Honestly the only issue I ever had with the Frank Lin is the nacelles. Please correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the more bulbous nacelles a direct divergence in the timeline caused by the destruction of the Kelvin?
My only issue with the Franklin is it's registry number.. Why would NX-326 be built BEFORE NX-01? Why not just give it an SS or USS, and skirt around that fact?
I always thought Warp 2 was broken before the N program prototypes as the J Class cargo ships of the Earth Cargo Service could reach Warp 2. So the BX prototype test must have been for that engine specifically
"Modifying the transporter system for human transport was not that difficult to do"...yeah, for Scotty, the guy that invented transporting while under warp, long range transport, and long term transporter stasis....only one of which is a thing we ever see in TNG or later. Probably because the other two were inherently unsafe....long term transporter stasis doesn't count because it only had a 50% success rate...
The NX would have seemed too big on screen and the design language too different. There is a toy-like shininess to the Kelvin universe ships that the more intricate, industrial detailing on the NX contrasts too much with.
If I were to take a gander, the cosmetics were meant to portray a more rudimentary version of a starfleet vessel. Then again, any captain obvious would clearly see that lol. Its harder to go backwards than forward in design cause the past has been defined, where as the future is left wide open. Then again, 🤷
I’d rather have a new ship than an NX. It would have been cool to have an NX but also it would have been a bit too fan-servicey, and JJ Abrams doesn’t care about the fans lol.
This comments section seems to mainly be a bunch of gatekeepers who are still whining about this like it was an actual historical moment. You guys are why people assume that Trek fans are all incels.

Blue Sky 😂😂😂😂😂😂 full of leftie tears

No it shouldn't.
NX would have been amazing but I believe the warp delta would have been a better fit.
Next to the NX class (and later the Columbia class) I think that an upgraded form of the Freedom class could have served well as a lighter ship class (in the frigate or scout role(s) maybe) working to support the heavier classes in the fleet. I agree an NX class would have been better
I liked the idea of the Freedom class. I figured that the NX design was the first to employ an actual deflector dish
With the Freedom class being a small ship, they could have built several of them for the Romulan War just as they did with the Daedalus. I can see there being more of this type than NX and Intrepid type.
I really like the design of the Freedom Class, USS Franklin!
NX -326 is a cool design that shows cues prior to the Enterprise NX - 01s design, but how does it predate especially with that 326..
Freedom-class initially featuring nacelles in the down position before the script of Star Trek Beyond required them to be flipped above the saucer section for a launch sequence in the film.
It resembles a Romulan Bird of Prey!
The question is, how did her nacelles got stuck inside of the rock?

Using words nicknames like jar jar abrums is so childish, but I’m not surprised. “fans” like you are the epitome toxic fandoms

People still don't get the feel of how big these ships truly were, that's why I'm building the original 1701 in 1:25 scale!

Question: Does anyone know what happened to the Uss Franklin after the events of Star Trek Beyond?
@brettnelson7048 probably restored and placed in the Fleet Museum

The design is actually really nice, yes it should have been an NX class but ultimately this was the best option.
While I do like the Franklin, as it allows for a natural progression of Starfleet’s development of warp drive, an interesting alternative choice could have been the NX-02 Columbia, since in Beta Canon it did go missing and wasn’t discovered until just the start of the Dominion War.
So the Franklin was active throughout the run of Star Trek enterprise?
And this is the question that needs answered.
Since it's the Kelvin Timeline the Freedom class feels like it would be the NX-class of that reality. After finishing the video it seems the Freedom-class is more less a Pre NX in look. You could easily add impulse engines on the rear to connect the pylons together.
definitely nx
Yes Nx 01
I think the NX would have been to big for what the movie runners were going for, an Intrepid or the Warp Delta like others have suggested would have worked imo.
How accurate is this though because isnt this a different universe?

Technically, this ship existed before the splintering of the timeline via the Kelvin Incident. So it would be canon to Prime as well.
Either the NX class or the warp delta I think would have been a better fit.
A great vid to help conquer the holiday blues.
Happy holidays!
I think it should have been an Intrepid Class seeing that it was the immediate predecessor to the NX Class.
It would have been updated to carry photonic torpedoes and phase canons ! At least I assume it would ?
Honestly the only issue I ever had with the Frank Lin is the nacelles. Please correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the more bulbous nacelles a direct divergence in the timeline caused by the destruction of the Kelvin?

This ship makes no sense that it has an nx number when the first nx was an warp 5 ship

WARP 4 HOW FAST
Warp 5, not 4.

Their must be a ss or uss freedom , prototype,
Just came here to say I hate that ship!
