I’m so late to add to this comment, but so many HP actors had incredible careers in British film and on stage. Lockhart was probably one of my least favorite roles of Kenneth Branagh. (He did great, the character just…grates like cheese). His work with Jane Austen adaptations is lovely. Same for Snape, Alan Rickman.
The Dowager Countess was arguably the best thing about this magnificent show. All her lines were zingers and Dame Maggie Smith never failed to deliver them perfectly.
Indeed. @jillfurman8904 she did not dislike the show (if she disliked it she wouldn't have done it for six seasons and two movies), she just hated how she became Famous and lost some of her privacy after doing this and the Harry Potter franchise.
For me, she's unarguably the best thing in that show. For an exquisite rendering of this Maggie Smith character supported by equally interesting costars and a fantastic script, see the excellent 2001 Robert Altman film "Gosford Park".
Is that true? Because I’ve googled it and Imelda Staunton‘s daughter is named Bessie, while the actress credited as Lucy Smith is named Tuppence Middlton
Oh my! She just told Violet she’ll die before the maid inherits. She must be fast because I wouldn’t dare take on Violet! Love the dowager countess! My favorite character.
RIP DAME MAGGIE SMITH. You will be so very missed. I have enjoyed your talent that you shared with our world for years. May God keep you in His Peace 🩷🙏⚘️
This was one of the greatest scenes ever. Maggie Smith's out did herself in this one I'm going to remember her words. Every single word so one day if I need I can use that beautiful comeback
Maggie Smith is so delightful as the Dowager. My favorite in this series. She is indeed a National Treasure and the reason I began watching Downton. I never tire of watching each episode. Execellent production!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Umbridge: This might sound silly but it sounds like you're questioning my authority, Minerva McGonagall: Not at all Dolores, merely your medieval methods

I read about a famous Hollywood actress who did something like that, adopted her own daughter. As someone said, it was not that uncommon. Also much younger “brothers” or “sisters” to a teenage girl.
Try to see "That Day We Sang" it's a musical about two fictional characters in the setting of a real event. It's a charming, heart warming film written by the great Victoria Wood.
In some roles she out-Streisand'd Streisand. Gypsy comes to mind there. Also loved Sweeny Todd, but for me that one is a tie between Imelda Staunton and Angela Lansbury.
This was the most heartbreaking video I think I’ve ever watched. To see her come out on the other side, still triggered and struggling but aware and honest about it, and helping other people too is just incredible. I hope you continue to find peace in your life Lisa. 💕
Umbridge and McGonagall have swapped sides!
She isnt THAT bad
😂
Those two!❤
Exactly my thoughts
Was exactly about to say the same things it’s mad scary seeing her not scream 😂
"Anything you'd like to say Minerva?" "O there are several things I would like to say!"
😂😂 I just had that same thought. apparently they already had beef from a previous life
Supposedly these actors really liked working together.
That makes me feel kinda warm and fuzzy inside.
They were so good together.
@Oma_WetterwachsThey're all friends, but yes, Judi Dench and Maggie Smith were particularly close.
@Oma_WetterwachsDench and Smith are/were the same age. They were also good friends over many decades.
Now that I think about it, McGonnagall insinuating that she’d like to stab Umbridge with the sword of Gryffindor would actually check out.
These women make MAGIC every time they are on screen together. Absolute legends
They make magic even when they are not together.
I will miss you, Mrs. McGonagall ❤❤❤ I always wanted a teacher like you. ❤❤❤ Rest in peace, my lady from a boy in Arizona. ❤❤❤

@jillfurman8904 she did not dislike the show (if she disliked it she wouldn't have done it for six seasons and two movies), she just hated how she became Famous and lost some of her privacy after doing this and the Harry Potter franchise.
She was a personal friend of our late Queen. They regularly had tea together at Buckingham palace.

I'm going to introduce "piffle" into my vocabulary now. 😂
Good for you! It's a wonderfully descriptive "word" . One my mother used fairly frequently. Miss hearing her say that word😢
Oh I thought she said pitfall.😅 It's kind of hard to understand their accent is very strong and time-based some words are no longer used.

Basically this is the only type of role Maggie Smith ever plays.....she probably has a copyright on it 🤣

Fun fact for everyone Imelda Staunton (lady Bagshaw) is married to Jim Carter (Carson) in real life
