McAfee should be number one. Almost every windows pc comes with a trail and many other software fool oblivious users into installing the trial version. If the trial version is left on your computer for a few months it starts to slow down your computer and multiplies the amount of ads displayed on web browsers even if you have any for of adblocker installed. if this gets bad enough it will make your web browser stop working all together. @@gernegesehen2985 No of course they don't. Do people not realize that whenever you need to agree on a term on a website the chances that you're agreeing on the fact that they are allowed to sell out your data to wherever is quite big. Anyone big on privacy knows what Google is the last thing they wanna use to keep their privacy, well, private.
It still baffles me how despite the existence of so many well known apps like Skype, Discord, and Microsoft Teams, they managed to find such an unreliable, obscure, and extremely shady app like Zoom to force upon people. Honestly, people who insist on forcing you to use it are shadier than the app itself.
honestly zoom was laggy shit in 2020, tho now they fixed something and now it works better, tho still sucks in some places discord has more features, it beats any chat or video calls apps, tho nitro and privacy sometimes are scary. skype was the best decade ago, now nah. WhatsApp is the security nightmare, telegram is russian. well, let's use SMS, sadly they aren't encrypted. fuck, there's no normal messaging app!
Zoom was kinda popular in business/enterprise before 2020. The main reason is for its enterprise and management features. Which is about the only good thing about zoom.
For me the dealbreaker with CCleaner was when I realized that every time you use it it automatically adds itself to the auto-start on system startup list - without letting you know. And if you remove it from the list, it will add itself again the next time you open the software again. No honest software does that.
That's why I love the world of Linux native software and even then when I use Windows based software in Linux.. It CAN'T pull such nonsense on me. It's my choice through and through
Do not install: 1. Strange Antivirus 2. Any "PC Cleaner" programs 3. Driver updater (unless it from manufacture or anything you can trust) 4. Strange browser 5. Any "Fix your PC" programs
Very true !! One driver installer does deserve recognition though: (SDIO), Speedy Driver Installer Origins. Works great!! It used to be crap but has gone open source
I'm not sure what the problem is with zoom ? I don't care about zoom-bombing. My problem with removing it is that there are lots of business meetings where they use zoom.

I used to use Windows Registry Repair back on Windows XP before it started giving issues after an update, and with the move to Vista I moved onto CCleaner. It worked fantastically until Windows 8, then I felt like it did more harm than good, "repairing" things that didn't need it and thereby making my system slower. I haven't used it in about 10 years and I don't think I miss it.
@@hiddentreasure2161 Well.. a big part of its success was the inclusion in windows itself , that's a big part of it~ But it still was the best many many years after... Not a single browser in the world made it easier to download a new Browser like firefox than Internet Explorer after setting up a new PC.
@@hiddentreasure2161 Actually, it was mainly due to how deeply integrated the browser was with the system. But I do believe that antitrust investigations needed to happen, but not over the shit about Internet Explorer. At the time of the mentioned lawsuit and at least a few years into the 2010s, Microsoft was offering rebates to OEMs who installed Windows on systems they made. The rebates were so valuable that it was more expensive to buy a machine with Linux on it from one of these OEMs than it was to buy a Windows machine, EVERYTHING ELSE BEING IDENTICAL!
This might be unpopular opinion, but... Google Chrome. Chrome is getting worse and worse nowadays. Worsening memory problem, adblocker tampering, privacy issues, Use Firefox instead. Even the new Edge is much better than Chrome.
Lmao Firefox uses more RAM than Chrome. I'm not desperate enough to use Opera, and Edge is just an ad for mediocre MS products. I trust Google with my data more than I trust Opera or whatever.
A lot of hackers uses firefox instead of google chrome because google restrict alert pop-ups and such greater things, now its irrelevant. Also firefox hackbar are better on older one like version 1.52 Just saying, firefox is better but for speed, google might be the winner but i rarely used chrome
I feel Internet Explorer was already the villain from the beginning. Remember the whole Netscape fiasco? But your comment definitely applies to CCleaner and uTorrent! Both started as programs with good intentions. But as they got more popular, the developers became greedy.
Hmmm...from what I've heard from "Kids" these days, most Schools AND Universities LOVE Communism....so I'm sure they're just fine with the China connection

The issue with CCleaner and software like it, is that many of the issues it "finds" are not issues that really matter. Caches... Unless you are having problems you should NEVER clear your cache. It literally exists to reduce the amount of work your system has to do. If broken registry keys really were that much of an issue, we'd be seeing errors from the OS itself.
@@Vexnatos I have a hard time trusting software that finds registry issues when they are not from Microsoft directly. Anti-malware is one thing, but any other warning I get from them is stuff I ignore. Because 9 times out of 10, they are either trying to sell you a service you probably don't need, or are of things that are generally not issues. Again, if broken registry keys are as serious as these softwares claim, we'd be seeing other problems.
@@Vexnatos Cleaning these should primarily be resolved by reinstalling windows every year or two. A system not wiped every now and then will have random systemic/performance issues crop up.

I'd also put Adobe products on this list. Especially creative cloud. I tried to uninstall it completely. Managed to uninstall everything that was installed and listed in control panel. I even ran the creative cloud cleaner tool. Even after that, multiple folders containing over 10 GB of files (not project files) remained. A shortcut to adobe online storage was left in the explorer sidebar. Had to run some script to get rid of it. But worst of all a program called AGCInvokerUtility.exe was left and ran at start up... A program that checks for piracy, even without any adobe programs installed. Safe to say I'm NEVER installing any adobe programs EVER.
I also was severely annoyed with the Creative Cloud on a laptop of mine, but instead of it being malicious or harmful it was just annoying and I got rid of it. On my PC I use Adobe programs without the cloud or any other programs whatsoever, and have no clue about that huge memory pile-up (that was probably already existent and consisted of your files related to the programs/Temps/additions to the programs themselves)
@@makibruv I really hate how one can't own creative (or any other type of) apps anymore. More students & creative users are going to have to get more vocal that they want to _own_ the apps they buy, not "rent" them. Adobe's shifty crap is why I only use Infinity Photo & Design now. Who needs Adobe when you can use Blender & DaVinci? I'm happy to pay a fair price for a good app & donate 2 their site. It's a shame because I used to _love_ Adobe - still love their apps - but I *hate* their underhanded trapped audience tactics.
The problem is that the rent option is soooo profitable for them. They generate a ton of revenue, which lets them hire more/better devs, which lets them produce useful software, which drives users to rent even though they'd prefer to own. They don't have an incentive to sell, and users are disincentivized to find alternatives with bugs, missing features, or learning curves.
@@CLove511 Actually, Adobe's rent-only tactics is losing them tons of customers. when i was forced to install zoom i installed it on an VM. The audio quality was shit (i didn't config it correctly so on me) but it wasn't on my main PC. When i mentioned this i mentioned that Zoom has major security flaws and they just scoffed at it saying "we're not important enough anyways" yes, that's what keeps hackers from stealing our information. Never use this feature. I was using it, and at least on two different laptops it broke the installation of .NET framework so badly that i could not upgrade to a newer version of Windows 10. Before i went with clean install, i tried a ton of solution to fix the problem, but the registry was broken beyond repair.
@@apolon_ex i remember back in the day when was this function relevant like in windows 95 and latter, it was removing traces of uninstalled programs from registry like unused dlls, but at some point of time with a certain version of windows the functionality of registry cleaner got broken and started to lead to unpredictable results and damages installed software. Registry cleaner cannot destroy your docs, maybe the disk cleaner deleted your docs in some folder, the registry cleaner could have deleted references in registry to your office software.
Wow this glary utilities is really good. Its disk analyser is exactly what I've needed for finding what's hogging up the system drive so I can relocate the files somewhere else. Like many I was using ccleaner for years and felt like it wasn't what it used to (or should) be
Thank you very much for the information on CCleaner/GlarySoft. I'd still be using CCleaner until today (hadn't known about the problems they'd had), and decided to check out Glarysoft, and already the free version is doing so much more and better in less than 5 minutes. It even just popped up 4 programs with updates available, which CCleaner only does with their pro version, so that's nice. And the uninstaller populated complete information so much quicker. I think I like it quite a bit more. As far as QuickTime, I don't remember ever having it installed since playing the Queensryche Promised Land game that they released soon after the album, because, frankly, why use it for anything that doesn't purely demand it? I'd actually be curious if someone has created a workable emulated environment for the old QuickTime games to function properly.
@@S己GYes, but Jitsi Meet is OpenSource, so everyone can review the Source Code and see if there is anything malicious. And if that isn't enough you can host it yourself, so you don't have to trust anybody. The problem isn't really with the companies, it is about proprietary software.
You are missing the oldest Zoom Alternative that still works very well as of today, I use it all the time: Skype. It's not just VoIP phone calls, it can also do chat, video calls, video conferences, screen sharing, file sharing, etc. Skype runs on every platform. Or how about something from a network specialist? Cisco Webex Meetings? Cisco Webex runs on every platform and you don't even need to install the client, it even runs entirely in almost every modern web browser.

I had used Ccleaner for well over a decade , it was suggested to me by a computer engineer , so I gave it a try , I loved it for a very long time , then the updates started to come with avast connected to them and if I wasn't paying attention it would get installed , and avast was very hard to remove everything , I considered avast to be malware , and had to be very careful about doing updates , then about 3 months ago I learned what really bothered me , the fact that avast and Ccleaner are owned by a Chinese company , and they are tracking all the users as well as installing malware I got rid of it right away. I wish I had a simple way to teach every computer user how to clean their machine manually , it is very easy to do and once you know where everything is it literally takes less than two minuets to clean and protect , yes there are other programs to do this as Ccleaner did , but you really do not need them , you don't know the people who made the program , but when you clean things your self , you know precisely what you did . I would make a video and show how to do this , but I'm not a youtuber and no one would ever see my video , just know there are ways to take care of things on your computer yourself without installing programs or spending a lot of money . I'd love to make a tutorial video on this , I would become instantly popular , maybe instead of being hated some would love me . I have been told on a number of occasions , two things , one I have the cleanest computer most techs have ever seen , and what did I do and how did I do it as things seem to not be at all where you would think they are . I start by telling them I'm dyslexic , that's the riddle . For real uninstall Ccleaner right now , very dangerous program anymore .
You could just list what you do to clean your computer as a comment if you don't want to make a tutorial. Some people do this in the comment section as opposed to making videos.
I have to have Zoom installed for the same reason and still need it. Don't use your main email address when you register an account. I wish I could sandbox it in a virtual machine or something, but I'm not that savvy. We tried Google Meet but it doesn't have grid view for more than 16 people and the Grid View browser extension keeps breaking whenever they update the service so it's not good for online classes.
cc cleaner is very useful to get rid of editing history and trackers(cookies) but when it comes to editing work,cc also keeps those logs and cache contents for a few days before deleting them,so you have to set the date ahead by a week on the computer clock and cc will delete them.In other words,it's also a spyware of some sort but it's very useful because if you don't use it,there will be many gigabytes of trackers on your machine, slowing it down more and more virtually by the week.
Last time I used Ccleaner it wiped out my passwords on Google Chrome, even though the box was checked not to wipe important files, it said these were just temp files. And after it keeps re-adding itself to startup when I disable it, no... No honest software behaves like this. Instant uninstall.
@@ArcanePath360 Looks like we're in the same boat. CCleaner always deletes my passwords too! It's really annoying, knew it was the right decision to uninstall it.
Any file compression tool that costs money/nags you. Either just use the built in zip tools in Windows, or install 7-zip. Skype. Personal VPN tools. Nobody needs those, unless you’re a travelling journalist/youtuber who visits China.
When I last used CCleaner (years ago) it was still an excellent utility. So this sort of video is super-helpful for people like me who might have obsolete opinions about a program and download it again or recommend it to others.
I'm so glad that I never updated my CCleaner. I still use the old version with no problems. It asks if I want to upgrade but I just say no. Sad- I hate it when something that works gets bought out and then doesn't work anymore.
I absolutely love VLC media player because it has played EVERY format of audio and video I have thrown at it. I even discovered by accident that it will also "play" JPG image files, although if you want to see the image for more than 30 seconds you will need to pause it.
I wish there is the dark version of the default vlc skin. Their website has custom ones but not what im looking for...For all its popularity nobody has made one
I'm surprised AVG is still as popular as it is, as when you try to uninstall it, it hooks into your computer like a rootkit, and is almost impossible to remove, without separating all the core files, and erasing them using software on restart, whilst removing any leftovers with zsoft uninstaller. Edit; I'm used qbit torrent for a couple of years now, after utorrent was blocked by windows, i never found out why until now, thanks for letting me know!
You don't have to have a profile for zoom and can run it on a browser, but that feature is pretty hidden. You have to start a zoom meeting, try to launch it, then some text will pop-up.
Thanks for this excellent PSA. I wonder if you could do an update on ZOOM. Since you published this video last July, they claim to have addressed some of their security issues, (as if Nov 2020) but I am not convinced. Meanwhile, nonprofits and universities have made ZOOM the go-to program for remote communication and online learning. The scariest part is that many of the people with authority to make institutional decisions about ZOOM are borderline computer illiterate (in my personal experience.) They don't follow sites like TechGumbo. They are the people who give you a blank stare when you ask them what browser or OS they use. They would be completely flummoxed by your (what I would consider) straight-forward demonstration of how to disable IE. Could you do a ZOOM update that we could share with our technologically challenged colleagues and loved ones? It would truly be a great public service. Thanks.
A *security* software company buys a company, then the website of the company they bought gets hacked. That speaks very highly of them... given what happened, Avast software should also be on this list.
My opinion: I think that AVG and Avast are not good antivirus programs. Also, I remember when I got my first PC ever, I was using McAfee, but it was very bad cause THAT antivirus gave me lots of viruses 😫 (it was before). Maybe McAfee have improved their antivirus now 🤔
@@beaumontlivingston8084 Quicktime X, which is for the Mac, is supposedly safe because it's supported and kept current. Quicktime for Windows hasn't been supported for years and is deprecated, which makes it a potential vulnerability in a Windows system. Other software I recommend avoiding: [PC Decrapifier was a nice utility to help with this, but has recently become unsupported. You could download the last version from one of the usual reliable software sources, if you like. Shouldiremoveit.com/ is a useful guide] 1. Most of the Win10 Apps which come pre-loaded-keep the few you might want, zap the rest; 1a. Same for any trialware & other junk which your PC maker pre-installed; 1b. Browser pre-installed junk like extensions & toolbars-get your own extensions. 2. Java. Major security issues for approx the last decade, avoid unless you have critical software which needs it-at the least, get it out of your browser. 3. Adobe Reader for PDFs-vied with Java for top spot in the most insecure ratings last decade. 4. Adobe Flash & Shockwave-Shockwave has been discontinued, and Flash [another big security risk for the last decade] is being phased out. Your OS may manage Flash itself, which may be ok, but avoid if you don't need it. 5. Microsoft's Silverlight-similar to Flash, though not as insecure, also obsolete these days. ~ When you get a new PC the way you want it-decrapified, with your own programs installed and configured how you want them-use Macrium Reflect or similar to take a system disk image. Then your only ~30 minutes away from a fresh start, should you ever need to. Ninite.com is a great place to get a bunch of good free software installed all in one go on a new PC. PS excellent video, well up to your usual standard.
The Java thing is exaggerated. It had a security flaw in it's browser applet. It no longer has a browser applet. If your version of Java is up to date then you're absolutely fine. In fact if your version is < 4 years old you're probably fine.

Avoid third-party Antivirus programs in general, they all suck (especially in the free versions) Just use the built-in Windows Defender (+ Malwarebytes if you want) and a good helping of 'Common Sense'
Go to The PC Security Channel on youtube and their website. He shows you what happens when you just use Windows Defender (hint, it's not pretty). I think my dad installed CCleaner on the laptop we use for our family business. I thought it was odd that Avast suddenly appeared especially after we changed to another firewall program after the license for CCleaner had expired. It also keeps scanning the laptop once or twice a week and claiming we have all sorts of spyware and malware which is not true as we mainly use it to buy parts, watch RUclips, and do online banking and taxes. Everything we do is through secure websites.

We tried Google Meet but it doesn't have grid view for more than 16 people and the Grid View browser extension keeps breaking whenever they update the service so it's not good for online classes.
Thankfully, my school let every student take their Chromebook home and pretty much everyone’s used that and their school email for Zoom.
cc cleaner is very useful to get rid of editing history and trackers(cookies) but when it comes to editing work,cc also keeps those logs and cache contents for a few days before deleting them,so you have to set the date ahead by a week on the computer clock and cc will delete them.In other words,it's also a spyware of some sort but it's very useful because if you don't use it,there will be many gigabytes of trackers on your machine, slowing it down more and more virtually by the week.

Nobody needs those, unless you’re a travelling journalist/youtuber who visits China.
discord exists lol, nobody really has a reason to use skype
I'll stick with WinRAR even though many people now use 7-zip because you can STILL use WinRAR even when the trial period is over.
Sadly zoom is required for my university... Some professors just use it despite being warned about it.
My class used zoom last year in 2020.Now we use google meet
Crazy part is I use many of these and have been for so long my versions are so old they are still gold.
VLC has always been the best
I wish there is the dark version of the default vlc skin. Their website has custom ones but not what im looking for...For all its popularity nobody has made one
@@MICROKNIGHT3000 I seem to remember one of the versions has an alternate grey and black skin, but I forgot how you access it.
use MPV, you'll never look at vlc ever again.
you can throw PS4 game disk image file at VLC and it will definitely run it
I was told to install Zoom by work for meetings whilst working from home, and they git a big fat "Not f**king likely", they use Teams now
Thanks for sharing this information.
Thank you for this video. I removed the 2 programs on this list that I had on my computer. Thank you again and please do more of these.
The only use i find internet explorer for is either downloading firefox.
Or using a custom html page for remote desktop as it still supports active X.
You don't have to have a profile for zoom and can run it on a browser, but that feature is pretty hidden. You have to start a zoom meeting, try to launch it, then some text will pop-up.
Then?
@@raoufbensalem3417 click on "join from browser" and put a name in and all that.
Like CCleaner Avast used to be good free software. Now I'm questioning other utilities I used or still might be using.
My opinion: I think that AVG and Avast are not good antivirus programs. Also, I remember when I got my first PC ever, I was using McAfee, but it was very bad cause THAT antivirus gave me lots of viruses 😫 (it was before). Maybe McAfee have improved their antivirus now 🤔
Very informative. Giving alternatives along with what to remove saves a TONNE :P
And about Quick Time, they're actually talking about the windows version so mac users a safe.
you think so?! Why? Because Apple told you its safe? If you're using an apple computer you're already a sitting duck, PERIOD.
This pfp
@Jett yeah, ummm OK.
@@beaumontlivingston8084 Quicktime X, which is for the Mac, is supposedly safe because it's supported and kept current.
Quicktime for Windows hasn't been supported for years and is deprecated, which makes it a potential vulnerability in a Windows system.
However, unless there's a reason why you'd need Quicktime, you're better off with other media players, such as VLC.
Use to love quicktime back in the day was one of the best to download movies all you had to do is open movie site in at browser.
That feeling when you've had all of these on your computer at one time.
I'm suprised Discord isn't more popular for non gaming uses. I use it to keep in touch with family and friends, and you can certainly use it to have meetings.
Another alternative to zoom: whereby. Excellent quality.
Never heard of. Maybe Microsoft Teams? It's good.
"Dont install zoom"
My clients pay for them, and we must use it to have meetings with them.
Other software I recommend avoiding:
[PC Decrapifier was a nice utility to help with this, but has recently become unsupported. You could download the last version from one of the usual reliable software sources, if you like.
Shouldiremoveit.com/ is a useful guide]
1. Most of the Win10 Apps which come pre-loaded-keep the few you might want, zap the rest;
1a. Same for any trialware & other junk which your PC maker pre-installed;
~
When you get a new PC the way you want it-decrapified, with your own programs installed and configured how you want them-use Macrium Reflect or similar to take a system disk image. Then your only ~30 minutes away from a fresh start, should you ever need to.
Ninite.com is a great place to get a bunch of good free software installed all in one go on a new PC.
PS excellent video, well up to your usual standard.
Ninite is amazing, love that website.
Chrome already got Java out of my browser for me.
@@cst1229 Why not switch to brave or opera while you're at it?
The Java thing is exaggerated. It had a security flaw in it's browser applet. It no longer has a browser applet. If your version of Java is up to date then you're absolutely fine. In fact if your version is < 4 years old you're probably fine.
@@tonightscake4127 Opera is a good suggestion. I've avoided Brave due to the various shady things they pulled-have they cleaned up their act? Besides, I don't need their level of privacy-but may be good for those who do if there aren't other drawbacks.
I currently use Opera a little, and Opera GX a lot. About a month ago I switched my main default browser from Vivaldi to Edge-I'm very impressed with Edge's continuing development, MS are doing it right this time.
Avoid third-party Antivirus programs in general, they all suck (especially in the free versions)
Just use the built-in Windows Defender (+ Malwarebytes if you want) and a good helping of 'Common Sense'
I use Malwarebytes. They should be good until they get acquired by some company with ulterior motives
Lol.this is not true
Go to The PC Security Channel on youtube and their website. He shows you what happens when you just use Windows Defender (hint, it's not pretty). Using Malwarebytes negates your statement, so that doesn't make sense. You can see on TPSC a short list of AV software that he recommends in place of Defender. I do agree with you that free versions are not the best and common sense is key!
Kaspersky and Bitdefender are those av that i only trusted after watching the pc security channel

Torrent software wise i suggest Transmission, its free its simple it gets the job done
*You're 'da BEST, TechGumbo!* ♥♥♥
Thank you, excellent info.
@TechGumbo, thank you for the video. This content is very helpful. Look forward to seeing more on this series. Would you be able to suggest free and safe alternatives to remote access softwares such as Anydesk / TeamViewer?
I rarely "like" videos but must admit I did so on this one.....will be coming back to it for reference certainly a few times. :)
Good video.
Thanx for showing the ccleaner alternative.
I run on my windows 10 pc only free (open source?) software, but this one i had not find an alternative for.
Another Zoom alternative would be Jitsi Meet, available for android and others (I believe.)
@Tech Pranav Except it's from Google - the dark empire
Zoom runs in background once it started. Even if you "close" the programme, it will come back until you kill it (in task manager) several times. I found this out when my laptop's fan spined like crazy and is very hot. I opened tm and guess what, Zoom ate 40% of my cpu usage, like wtf it is not even visually running
Wonderfully informative video! I shall commence applying the useful tips right away!
The free version of Glary Utitlities has very few functions. It's one of those programs that constantly asks you to pay.
Like that annoying uncle who's always broke.
@@rookmaster7502 just say charge it to your parents credit card
Excellent content! Great job by adding alternatives after each one.
