  • Rod Argent is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee as founder member of The Zombies. He also created another group in the 70's called Argent, who went on to have hits with songs like "Hold Your Head Up" and "God Gave Rock & Roll To You". He's also worked with other legends like Phil Collins, Gary Moore and The Who! In this short video, Rod details his experience working with Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, which included playing on their classic hit "Who Are You", and tells a story of sneaking to the pub with Keith Moon!

"Hold Your Head Up" was one of the greatest songs of the early 70's. I was 10 yrs old when it was released. It was a collaberation of Rod Argent and Chris White and defined that era of music as much as any other song of its time. It was so good in fact, that it charted all the way up to #5 here in the U.S. I still LOVE it and still get chills whenever I listen to it.

Rod Argent is one of the great keyboardists of rock, as well as a fine songwriter, with The Zombies, his band Argent, and contributing to The Who on several songs. He certainly should receive more recognition for his accomplishments, in my humble opinion.

  • @tomcarl8021

Yes, they were well-known for working fast in the studio, but Townshend's writing took long, and he worked really hard on the synthesizer parts. In fact, much of what you hear on the song 'Who Are You' , is actually Pete playing his guitar through a synthesizer. And when the song crashes down halfway through, and it becomes quiet, what you think is John Entwistle playing bass, is actually Pete on acoustic guitar. Nothing is what it seems on that song.
Also, Pete did most of the recording of the song in 1976, two years before the rest of The Who recorded their parts.
It remains one of Pete's proudest moments of his career.

I myself am a pianist and completed all my grades in classical piano, but when you see someone like Keith Emerson playing and others you soon realise that grades mean absolutely nothing.
I knew a old jazz pianist who was barking mad, he could play anything,he couldn’t read a note of music but somehow knew what key he was in and what chords he was playing.
I have watched him play ELP at his house and it is absolutely incredible and he himself always used to say that it’s one thing playing it and something on a whole different level to be able to write it.

He knew there were monsters inside of him he couldn't control, but he tried his very best to control them. There was no support system. Only Money, pills, booze, and people that wanted him to be a wild man. Rodger Daltrey says he would have wished he would have done more in his autobiography. Alcoholics are sad people and hard to relate to. I knew someone from high school who died at 29. He was already alcoholic by age 19, maybe earlier. Never knew for sure what caused his death. He looked bloated from the lower neck through his face in the casket. Maybe he shot himself through the mouth?

Then he too could have explained how vital it is to cruise CP websites in order to write a book that has fuck all to do with it, was never started, intended or ever going to be written. Old Pete is probably mates with John Deacon.

He is very charitable, they sound deeply unpleasant. Why did Moon have a minder ? Why was Rod Argent only credited on two tracks ? They insisted on being paid before going on at Woodstock. Essentially a business not a band. ' Tommy ' is one of the worst things ever committed to vinyl and ' Quadrophrenia ' is utter rubbish.

Lots of bands were ripped off in those days. Chuck Berry would only play if he was paid in cash up front. He would also play for a set amount of time and if that happened mid-song he'd just stop playing and leave the stage.

@@steffanhoffmann Are you guys LISTENING to Tommy? Because you realize it is a Movie right? Which includes Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton, Elton John. It is Cult Classic and 100% the reason for its extended influence. Perhaps the best of the Psychedelic Rock Operas. And unlike the average 60's/70's Rock Opera it has top level dumb humor almost like South Park or something. When I realized what Pinball Wizard TRULY IS ABOUT. A deaf, dumb and blind Kid being the best Pinball player ever. I heard the song dozens of times. Amazing Guitar. Never REALLY listened to the lyrics till I saw Daltrey as the Deaf, Dumb and Blind kid battling Elton John in a Pinball Showdown.
