I must tell you, the first time I heard Daf (Sami Yusuf Concert) I fell in love and it gave me the impression that I already know this sound from somewhere deep in my soul. The sound of Daf takes me to a deep mediation and connection with the creator, with god, with nature but also with people. It is hard to explain. I was born in the Balkans and perhaps I have ancestors who played this instrument. I wish to play and hear it in the body. That’s why I am planing to buy it. I was taught to hold the daf in the mirror image of how you are holding it, with the 'doum' and 'tak' done by the right hand, and the 'ka" done by the left hand. Is it because you are left-handed that you play it the way you do?
hello ZIrak, could you answer my post to let me know whether you 'd be willing to my music project that consists in building up a music production of irish traditional music supported by various drums and electronic sounds but melodic lines played by acoustic intstruments such as wooden concert flute and fiddle.It's not a commercial project but rather experimental and artistic project.I want to set up a series if reels (4/4) about the Irish 1847 famine and migration in connection with contemporary issues.Thus I would like to substitue Daf for Bodhran sound. Hope you will accept at least!I also need to retort to 6/8 rythm for a jig set about gaza called Weast.Thanks in advance I am Yves Gardet and I live in brittany.
Hello, I have short fingers and cannot reach for Ka because only the top joint of 2 fingers (index and middle) can reach the skin. So my ka is very quiet. Does this matter.
Hi, thank you for this lesson. I’m trying to learn the frame drum myself for about the past 10 weeks now. I bought a 16 inch Remo fiberskyn frame drum which I am loving it. But I am also wanting to purchase a Daf. Can you recommend a good Daf to buy for a beginner female that isn’t too expensive. I’m in the Uk too. Also, can you recommend which company to purchase one from please? (Thank you). I would much appreciate your advice regarding this. I would also be interested in your workshops & lessons when I’ve bought the Daf.
...for the sake of god..it's not a 5/8 but 6/8 rhythm (with a pause on the 6th note), with accents on 1 and 4. Plus, your body posture is completely wrong especially in the left part...most importantly try not to cover your face while playing. As a beginner it was a good job though.
the rhythm he is trying to explain is neither 5/8 or 6/8, its actually 10/8 which is a combination of two 5 back to back 123-12-12-123 ( which the last 3 goes as silent or pause) it's called Hayallah-Allah , which if you sing along it goes with the rhythm.
