I love the detail that Greg got water instead of a drink because he's a recovering alcoholic. It was a subtle way of showing his character development.
It was! While also working on other levels too. For instance, sometimes people who are only ordering water can get lost in the shuffle when a bar is busy, and I've been told that women tend to get served more quickly than women as well (though I don't really drink, so I don't know if that one's true). Either way, everything about that little moment is perfect!
I also love the detail that Rebecca took him to a bar and ordered a cocktail right in front of him because she's still kind of inconsiderate and all in her own head.
It's so unnerving how well he got Greg's mannerisms and vocal intonation

This song was an extremely clever move on the creators’ part as a way to reintroduce Greg with a new actor and manage to get people on board with it fairly quickly. They rehash the whole relationship, solidifying in the viewers mind that this is indeed the same guy. But at the same time they bury the past and establish a new direction for the character, so it’s not too jarring that he looks different because it’s clear he is changed and on a different trajectory. Really well written story beat.
Well while I didnt find the new actor jarring it happens the thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the voice Santino and Skyler don't even have similar voices if they got a similar sing it would have been ok with me
I know we wouldn't have had this song without recasting but it really is written in the voice of the first Greg. I would have loved to see him perform all the songs in like an extras credit thing
I've never made peace with the change, not because of the look but because of the voice. I don't know the lingo to express it, but my feeling is that the New Greg's voice is soft and dorky while Old Greg's is deep and snarky, which is the whole character. Greg was never "soft" and approachable, and this change never made sense for me.

The "tell him I'm sorry. Tell her I am too..." Always makes me tear up. I don't even care if they're together as friends or as an actual couple, I'm just glad they managed to forgive each other and still feel like they can support each other.

I start tearing up a beat earlier, when she says she’s sorry he had to hide. It’s just so honest.
I love that they stopped the song for a moment to let the apology hang in the air. As much as they're doing the whole "start fresh" thing, they have a lot of scars from each other and that apology is still a powerful and meaningful thing that shows how far they've come. The fact that they can have that moment is proof that they can start over

If you're listening to a cxg song and thinking "that line is absolute genius" then odds are the credit goes to Adam Schlesinger, who was indeed a genius. He's possibly best known for being behind Stacy's Mom by Fountains of Wayne but he (co-)wrote a ton of fantastic songs, including a lot of the best songs from this show, like You Go First and The End of the Movie.
Okay so a lot of people are pointing out that Greg has lost his "sharpness" and is less "bitter" etc. That's not an actor fail, that's because the character of Greg has lost that edge to him because he began processing and coping with his emotions and addictions in a healthy way for the past TWO YEARS. He has changed a lot too, and I think people are overlooking that when justifying the change and just leaning on Rebecca's change as a person. They are both two completely different people from when they last saw each other, which is evident when **spoiler**
she finally tells him that she slept with his dad and he is shocked yet kind not angry like he would have been in the past

Other people don't see the change because they have bumped into him over the years or sent a happy birthday message etc. and basically seen the transformation.
It's like the ship theory, where over time every single piece of the ship is replaced and people wonder if it is the same ship. West Covina saw the in-between phases of Greg, but Rebecca didn't, so all she sees is a different ship.

Thanks that's exactly what I was thinking. At first I was really not on board with the idea but this song was so well written and well done it sounded really right to me. Rebecca was so focused on herself she could have seen a completely other person than Greg actually was and now after all this time she finally sees who he actually is. I know it wasn't the shows original decision but I'm actually really glad for it. It sounds really right like how you could in real life meet someone after a while, growing up with a bit of a hatred or bitterness toward them and being able to re-discover them in a completely new and positive light because you've both changed and grown so much. I think this song is my favorite from the entire show so far.
It really gives me hope that my feelings of deception toward some people can end up evolving to some form of peaceful respect and maybe it'll be the same for them. While I'll still keep them away from my life because well it was a shit show, it really makes me feel better that while I won't start new it can still be somewhat peaceful.

Comments like "they shouldn't have brought back Greg if they couldn't get Santino" why? Santino is the one who chose to leave the series early. The creators said they always meant for things to not work out with Greg but they didn't want to end his arc but had to because Santino wanted to move back to New York. Santino couldn't commit to the show, plus they got his blessing, and it's an incredibly creative and thoughtful move from a writing and direction perspective.
I don't see how recasting is that innovative, they just came up with a reason for it. If the character was that vital maybe they should have worked with an actor that they knew would be there till the end.
@@elsieandrews5070 When they casted the role for Showtime Santino was able to commit full time but during the transition period to The CW he made commitments to plays on Broadway and plus his wife is in NYC. He married his wife in 2015 which was during season 1 of Crazy Ex-GF and they live in New York.

@@elsieandrews5070 Honestly it's not always smooth when it comes to casting. And Santino's a great actor with Frozen fame and he signed on for 1 year. Most people wouldn't want to waste a good actor unless they have to especially one that fits a character.
Me before this episode: I like Astin a lot as an actor but I don't think anyone can fill in for Fontana.
Me now: Greg is back and this show is the best thing ever.

I think Skylar was the perfect casting choice for this. He’s a bit lighter, a bit younger, a bit more fun. The way I’d imagine Sober Greg to be. This was all so thoughtfully put together and I loved every second of it.
The fact that they played the whole "this is a new Greg" thing throughout the season is what made me LOVE Skylar as Greg 😂😂

Those of you who are mourning the loss of previous Greg, I think you are forgetting that as lovely as he was, he was also a toxic alcoholic. Previous Greg was not right for Rebecca. With all of her character growth, Rebecca needs to be with a Greg that has also grown. I think this recasting works perfectly and I'm glad to see a Greg that might actually bring out the best in Rebecca
In theory if you were to actually be a different person than he would occasionally regresses back into his old self. So unless they're still going to bring Santino back it still doesn't make sense.
@@elsieandrews5070 Rebecca looks a lot different now than she did in season 1 and season 2. When she has regressive behaviors, her hair doesn't get lighter.
I also think the difference here isn't the BPD or Substance Abuse Disorder symptoms, it's that both of them are in a place where they accept personal responsibility for bad behavior.

I love Skylar's Greg so much. Like, I know the fans were all holding their collective breath but he did really well here and he got Greg's character to a T.
The show did a great job transitioning the new Greg. The best part of the episode was this and the reveal of Valencia’s other guy.
When I hear this song now I think of one phrase I heard the other day: forgive your past self for things you didn't know back then. Greg and Rebecca are forgiving and letting go of those people who were not good for each other, and ready to meet again. How I love his show

But we need to remember that Rebecca has a tendency to feel intensely and make rash decitions. Not say I don't want her with greg, just if she really is happy.
I'm sad the original actor decided to leave but that's the way things go. They needed to finish Greg's story seeing as this is the final season and I think this actor was well cast. At first glance in the promo and the reports I wasn't feeling it but after seeing the episode I think he is definitely as close as you can get.
I asked Santino when he was in Hello Dolly Broadway if hes coming back. He said he hoped so so Im thinking it wasnt that he didnt want to do it but maybe because of conflicting schedules

gracious Santino signed a one-year deal to begin with. He had other commitments lined up after that deal on Broadway, which was why he left. Following someone on social media doesn’t make you friends, and not following someone doesn’t mean they hate each other.
The creator said in an interview that they wanted him to stay longer, but Santino wanted to go back to New York. Probably to be closer to his family. But I do miss him. Santino and Rachel had great chemistry. Maybe it was too great?... 🤔
Santino is doing Tootsie and wants to settle down with his wife in NYC because she's also a Broadway performer and long distance is rough
i really don't know why, but this is my favorite song of the show, everything is so pure, you can see how Rebecca and Greg evolved into better humana beings. the emotional bagage that this song have to me is simply... I can't describe
I love new Greg!!! Seems so healthy, powerful, refreshed and appealing.
It's amazing how the last song that "Greg" sung made me cry so HARD but when he sung this song I can't stop smiling.
I think my favorite part is at the end when they apologize. It's clear from the beginning that's what they were dying to say to eachother for a long time. And sometimes just hearing a simple, but genuine "sorry" can be such a relief to hear (and say).

Skylar is the new Greg! He's doing really well. Though not being the old familiar Greg that we all love, he is creating another version of this character. It's amazing that Rachel and Aline put a very bold new idea into this show. People's perceptions do change!
And with that, all the warm, fuzzy Greg & Rebecca feelings return....

Am I the only one who is actually thinking the recast of Greg is connected to Rebeccas mental health? I feel like in the past couples eps there’s been more hints of how the musical side (and other ways she perceives things) are connected to her health so I wouldn’t be surprised if this recast is actually plot related....maybe I’m completely off base though lol

they've managed to make the recasting make sense story wise but IRL they did try to get santino back. greg's departure from the show wasn't intended either, they had to work around santino leaving the show to make the story go forward. i think the recasting works, though i'm not too sure about skylar astin specifically as greg. they shouldn't have shaved him lmfao he looks too young to be greg

i love how this song is one of the more Broadway-y songs. I could really imagine this song in an actual musical unlike most of the songs of the show (though i love them all).
like everyone, i was a bit disappointed when i saw that it wasn't santino, but BOY skylar is AMAZING. WHAT THE HELL. the dialogue and humour and mannerisms and just the _acting_ skylar does is greg to a T. it's fantastic. i can't wrap my head around it. i'm so shook.

Rachel, screw what all the neigh-sayers have to say. I was so sad when I realized Santino wouldn't be back, but I think the show did a beautiful job at re-introducing the character, and it works really well with the direction of the series. I also love that you can tell Skylar worked to pick up some of Greg's body language; everything just came together so perfectly. This is also probably one of my favorite songs from this season so far. It's genuine, poignant, and is slowly bringing Rebecca out of her fantasies and into the real world. I'm gonna bawl when this series ends next year!

It's kind of like Rebecca's illusion of Greg has been lifted and she's seeing him for real! Clever effect.

This clip is an incisive parody of "Meet Cutes" in Rom-Coms: Two people bump into each other on the subway, a guy can't get the barkeep's attention, two people reach for the same magazine at the dentist's office, each literally rolled in from off-stage and rolled-out just as fast.
What an amazing show! This show is giving it all this last season. I loved how the reintroduced Greg and how they dealt with the recasting and those season jokes, OMG.

I fell in love with Greg/Santino Fontana's acting as soon as I started watching the show, and it's so difficult to accept the idea of a "new" Greg. However, Austin's acting is just amazing. He's able to reproduce exactly how Greg used to talk/act. It leaves me speechless :) Congratssss!
