    Nautical tradition also gave us the slightly derogatory name for Brits: Limeys. Once it was accepted that scurvy was caused by vitamic C deficiency, the Navy provided limes for the sailors to suck on. Sailors wore them around their necks. 😀

    Although correct in content, and excellent as always; this relates to naval service well before (and after) the Royal Navy of Henry VIII - Life aboard was very little different until the advent of iron ships, central victualing and (eventually to support electronic equipment) refrigeration.

    Seems like the more serious crimes got a quick and easy death. I would take beheading over being drug under the barnacle covered boat while drowning or the tar and feathered gauntlet and drowning death any day.
