Williams Defender arcade. Clock 1 million, clock waves, pick up all 10 + a humanoid trick.

  • This is Williams Defender green label on MAME, factory settings. On wave 1 I pick up all ten and force 5 through to the top of the screen. This is a bug and I always wondered what happens as they start to crawl down the screen when they reach the bottom. Gary Whittingtham has done this and I wanted to do the same myself. You can see they eventually settle back on the mountain. I've clocked Defender many times but never taken the time to keep playing. I wanted to see the waves clock to 0 and get through the first half of the second million on the lives you get for every score after 990,000 and before 1m. I just about make it.

    This brings back memories from my days at university. I remember seeing Defender when it first arrived at the Unicentre commons. I shoveled so many quarters into that thing. I should have saved them and bought my own cabinet ;-).
    I have three strong memories. The first is competing for top position with my CompSci classmate Charlie for first on the leader board.
    The second was when Williams came to town to determine the best Defender player. They came in and set the game up with a one ship start. Only those on the leaderboard could compete. We went in reverse order so I went last solely because I’d tipped Charlie the day before. I remember being nervous and scoring about 380k with one ship. Charlie had a few hundred more than me when I died. I believe he won the city championship.
    Third, playing for a long time and then handing over the game to someone watching because I had to get to a lecture. Charlie and I did this frequently. I’m sure it created some bragging rights from those that took our games over with their friends 😜.
    And then Stargate came out. It was good but Defender remains my favourite. I hope to one day build one as a retirement project, which isn’t far off! Time flies.
    I never did roll the game. That’s impressive, though. As are the comments from others who’ve done so. I know Charlie did roll it and I know he saw the scrolling bug too. Once he rolled it he always played by killing all his humanoids and playing in space. Total chaos.

      Yes one of the many bugs. I was wondering if they would score 500 again when reaching the mountain but no. They only move down when you're on screen with them hence why I keep them together with me. Having all ten on screen together helps to keep the processor busy which triggers the logic they built into the game to transport objects to the other side of the planet when things get too much for the processor, hence you see baiters constantly disappearing, which helps to stay alive.

    My nephew and one of my friends at the same age (all of us born in 1962) who all got into the machine and once comfortable with it we actively sought out the machine to play and sometimes when playing we would switch with each other so one of us could relax and have a smoke or use the washroom etc
    Once you became one with the machine you could spend hours upon hours and set records with only one quarter!

    • @DonGrose
      @DonGrose  5 месяцев назад

      @gaskellr44 it wasn't necessarily 400,000. The whole thing is a bug and it ends up taking as many 10ks as extras you won before you get the lives back again. One trick is to try to get just over 100 free lives during the 990k period as this will clock that count. So for example if you get 50 free lives during the 990k period you'll start earning lives again after 500k. But if you get say 103 free lives during the free period then you'll start earning lives again after only 30k.

    • @gaskellr44
      @gaskellr44 5 месяцев назад

      TBH, I managed to only clock it once but saw quite a few do it a few times off one 10p back in the day. How can one control how many extra lives and of course smart bombs during that 10K window? Is it by shooting less value enemies. TBH not completely sure I fully understand what you are meaning but thanks for the info.@@DonGrose

    • @gaskellr44
      @gaskellr44 5 месяцев назад

      You right actually, as I rem now when I did, clock it, it was about 300,000 ish when I started to get lives and s bombs again, but it was so fast, I didn't last too long. This was also back in the day, when we played it in arcades, knocking on 1982, so well before Mame was about. I also did the thing you talked about a few times, with the things you pick up and land, going to the top and floating down slowly. There were other arcade games that had bugs like Ghost n Ghools. Think I was the only one in our town who completed it.I am sure the makers put these in for fun? Well maybe?@@DonGrose

    • @DonGrose
      @DonGrose  5 месяцев назад

      @@gaskellr44 well the defender bugs are well known to be indeliberate. There's a defender Facebook group where you sometimes hear from the developers. When the game was released no-one had scored above 70k and they didn't anticipate that anyone would get anywhere near a million. The 990k bug was entirely unknown and unseen prior to the game's release. The game play really matures as you get into the multiples of 100k but none of that was ever really intentionally designed.

He also had all the high scores by getting 999975. He signed it "ADY". In order to get the high score was very tricky without accidentally clocking it. 25 points for being killed with a bullet. Zero point for dying by Hyperspace. The arcade owners made the settings harder, 3 men to start etc.

      Yes I remember my first game at an arcade at Heathrow airport in the early 80s where I lasted about 30 seconds. In the UK the game was 20p as well whereas most games at that time were 10p. You got 3 for 50p so with a mate we could at least do 3 games of doubles for slightly less. I never thought I'd be able to get good at it but on relfection it's not as if I had endless money to spend. There was a culture of watching others and learning the tricks. I just found my score growing into the 100k then the 400k and I remember my first game past 700k where it felt like clocking it was going to be possible. I finally clocked it at an arcade in Tottenham Court Road in London. It was a choice between clocking and not getting your name up or trying to leave it at 999975 but the first time there I just wanted to clock it. I subsequently did a few 999975's. It probably took 4 years to learn to clock from the age of 13 to 16 or so. I've tried to master Robotron since but even with endless free plays I can't get more than a couple of million. In this recording I rely on smarts way too much past 1million and can see lots of silly mistakes. There's no reason I should have ended where I did but at least I did all the things I wanted to do.

      cheers, yes I suggest to try to play without killing off the humans. Killing them and leaving a couple is a good way to get better at the later stages but if you can then transition to keeping them it's worth a lot more points and actually makes the game easier as you're hitting 10k new man for less exposure to game play, ie each end wave bonus takes you closer to or beyond the next extra without having had to risk death getting there and that all adds up

Defender is full of things that you might come across by accident but you watched other players. It's amazing how much in Defender was a bug or oversight that actually added to the game.

    I can't tell you how much I enjoyed that masterful performance. Were you a player in the arcade back in the day? This emulation is so incredibly spot on. I knew about the 10drop bug leaching over to the top of the screen, but in all my time of playing back in the day, I never realised they would fall slowly back down : because I was always in such a hurry to knock out the last lander before the baiters came. It was sooo good to see all those techniques once again - like the snap reversal method of taking out a single mutant and falling in behind the swarmers. I love the way you got in the zone in the second half, you know..... where it all become so automatic, intuitive and fast that you're not even thinking about it any more. I couldn't beat your baiter play! that first round with all those baiters was masterful. I think I might have been a tiny bit better at handling mutants, but man you were deadly with those baiters. ...........................Tell me you're using a joystick and button set up something like the original? - surely all that spot-on timing and movement cant be done on a keyboard can it ? Thanks for recording and posting this - I was on the edge of my seat for every second. Lots of sequences where pure art : particularly liked from 1:01:16 to the loss of that ship- that little sequence seemed to have all the subtle techniques all happening beautifully one after the other.

    • @DonGrose
      @DonGrose  Год назад +4

      Thanks for such a well considered review, you clearly know the game very well yourself. Yes you can buy an excellent dedicated Defender/Stargate joystick and buttons controller from a guy called Mike Hanson, search on Facebook. Slightly smaller scale to the original but allows for 100% authentic play. The humans trick is interesting, you come to realise they only actually move when on screen, unlike all the other moving parts, so you have to keep them on screen to have them move down. Yes the gameplay with defender settles after about 400k doesn't it where you get in the zone. In many ways play becomes easier at that point as your skills are trained for the highest level. The game seems to have been designed so well to cater for that stage but apparently the game designers themselves never saw scores above about 100k before the game was realised and never anticipated anyone really beating that kind of score. Even today I heard the high score of one of the 2 main designers is only around 70k. It's an insanely well crafted game, but it seems some of the design outcomes were also plain luck because no-one was playing it at the highest level. The free live per hit for example at 990k is a bug. Getting safely behind swarmers wasn't designed that way, it just happens that way.

    • @1000000trs
      @1000000trs Год назад +2

      @@DonGrose That's amazing history - (I didn't know those things). The 990k bug must be the best accidental game feature every - the sound effect at that stage for each hit is a fantastic celebration of the home-straight. Yep, certainly know the game: hard to believe, but despite not having played for over 35 years, I can still make out permanent callouses on the end knuckles of my little finger and ring finger of my left hand. The stick was quite short on those original cabinets - great for sensitivity, but pretty hard on knuckles which would rub on the panel. A misspent youth perhaps, but very happy memories.

    • @DonGrose
      @DonGrose  2 года назад +2

      Thanks, I guess force of habit mainly but somehow I ended up at that position as what seems to be a sweet spot for smarting all 4 pods. From that position you can rise up during the smart to add to the processor drain which seems to help prevent pods splitting and generating more for the processor. You can also thrust of from there and create an elongated smart area as is you're at full speed during a smart you'll capture more and this sometimes gets a fourth pod otherwise off screen from the other three. In truth you can probably do all that without moving to the bottom!
