Williams Defender at 99/99 (max difficulty) and 5K per ship

  • Here is the Defender video game played at it's maximum difficulty setting, but at 5K per ship. To offset the generous ship bonus level I only allow myself one smart bomb per wave. I also changed the planet refresh setting so that I get an entire new planet every wave. This forces me to play to preserve my humanoids, whereas historically I have played by killing off all the humanoids except one or two and holding on to them.
    Oh, and do a search on youtube for Defender 909K -- that dude is the best out there. Or if that one doesn't work, Defender 314K. His youtube name is mikeville66.
    The Defender manual (PDF) can be found online, for instance here:
    www.robotron-2...
    To get maximum difficulty settings 18 and 19 are given the values 99. To set 5K per ship, it's setting 8.
    Quoting the manual:
    GAME ADJUSTMENTS (Functions 8-21)
    1.In game over mode set switch to AUTO-UP and depress ADVANCE. The CRT indicates Function 1 and total left chute coins.
    2.To raise Function number on CRT, operate ADVANCE pushbutton with switch set to AUTO-UP. To lower Function number operate ADVANCE with it set to MANUAL-DOWN.
    3.With desired Function indicated, raise adjustment value by operating HIGH SCORE RESET with switch set to AUTO-UP; 1ower value by operating HIGH SCORE RESET with it set to MANUAL-DOWN. Value left on CRT is new setting. For values, see below and, for pricing, Table 1.
    Function Total Description
    8 10,000 BONUS SHIP LEVEL (O=No Bonus ships)
    9 3 SHIPS PER GAME
    10 3 COINAGE SELECT
    11 1 LEFT COIN MULT
    12 4 CENTER COIN MULT
    13 1 RIGHT COIN MULT
    14 1 COINS FOR CREDIT
    15 0 COINS FOR BONUS
    16 0 MINIMUM COINS
    17 0 FREE PLAY (Set to 1 for Free Play)

    Have to say this but this game was a very early example of what perfection is in a video game. Perfect sound that still sounds wonderful to this day, and listen to those buttons taking a hammering along with the joystick going up and down, how the original arcade cab survived all the stick it took back in its day is beyond me and just showed what engineering went into arcade machines back in the day. Thanks for uploading this.

      Defender is even MORE perfect. You can run Defender into MAME emulator, and set the CPU speed to 200%, and... Surprise! Defender adjust graphics render process to this new speed... Amazing!

    I bought one second hand for £250 pounds in 1989. I used to love opening the coin door and toggling that press down switch and listen to every game audio. Wow, this game was years and years ahead of the industry. All the chips had gold plated pins for perfect conductivity, unbelievable. Did you know that it was launched at an american coin slot trade showcase and the software was still being worked on, the night before!! Williams made it just in time. This game stands head and shoulders above any other for the year...Legend!!

My highest score was 3.2 million. Ie, I clocked it 3 times. And at that point, id had enough. But nobody in Barnsley, to my knowledge bet me lol. My dad called it despender lol

    I remember coming across a kid playing this in local party store in early80s, he was on ‘ attack wave 90’ and had the hammer down continuously in one direction. It was so fast I could hardly tell what was going on. It would go about 30 seconds and then stop to go to the next wave. I watched till he was at about wave 96. I don’t recall seeing him get blasted apart like is happening here.
    Was still going when I left the store. I have no idea how high he went

    If ships and smart bombs could be set separately I would do that. My goal is to have a generous enough ship bonus so that I can get quality practice because I have a sense of continuity in the game (rather than zillions of low scoring games), but I want to be in the habit of using the smart bombs sparingly.

      He is good but back in the 80's we played this every dinner hour in a shop near my school, I once stayed on 50 minutes and was late for my lesson, had to ditch it and I was only the 3rd best in the town. I suspect every other town in the 80's had equally good players, not taking anything away from this guy, he clearly would be one of the top players back then. One thing tho, I remember it being harder than this, ships were harder to get and we hung on to our last human without ditching him until the wave was over. Great to watch this again though and well played to the guy on the J/S

    PRO MOVES mate!!!, well done. It always makes me wonder how long it takes Defender players to actually get this good or to this level of skill. How long did it take you to get to your first 50'000 ? It took me forever just to start reaching wave 4 normal settings. I barely reach 30'000 most of the time.
    Defender to most people at first glance looks very simplistic so they never realise (me included) just what a tactical "thinking man's" game it can be. I am just starting to do the thing now where you kill off all your humanoids except a few and i have to admit it does actually help. Sometimes, lol

      Hey AESCULAPTORmark3 -- sorry for the late reply, but thanks a lot for your comments! Yeah man, the game is pretty brutal. Playing Defender is like trying to scale a cliff--it's NEVER easy. Always needs a continuous focus and a slow accumulation of skill. That's what I like about the higher difficulty levels. When I first set it to max difficulty it was like learning the game all over again My first 50,000K was a big accomplishment. Check out the facebook group "Williams Defender Players Unite" if you want to compare notes with other people who are still working on their first million.

    Thats a good tactic Kai as it helps you learn how to fight. I am just too wasteful unfortunately. I can average about 14-15K a wave on 99-99 thanks to the extra baiters, which means i can smart bomb 3 times every 2 waves. And i do! Keep practising and you will join the elite band of players who can score 1 million on 99-99 10K ship. You seem good enough anyway so you are almost there. Have you tried the green roms. They are a bitch. Much faster!

    • @modolief
      @modolief  9 лет назад

      Hyperspace is always a mixed bag. You have a 75% chance of surviving. In this case, though I survived, I was still only able to pick off one more enemy. THAT is because wave-end is so difficult! Once the baiters are going berserk you have to be Chuck Norris to kill them all.

    • @modolief
      @modolief  10 лет назад

      Thanks man. MAME is especially hard because the control panel is different -- what do you use, a normal keyboard? Also, on MAME, I have seen "screen tear": parts of the screen seem to rip a little because the processor can't keep up with the movement. Weird since modern processors are about 1000 times faster than the original 1980 dedicated CPU. I hear older versions of MAME didn't have that problem. Maybe there's a setting somewhere that can fix it, I just haven't bothered to tweak it all the way since I have original equipment (and still functioning!).

    • @modolief
      @modolief  10 лет назад

      Gavin FreedomLover Yah, actual cabinet. Bought it about 3 years ago for $500 on craigslist. Still in good very good condition. Defender strategies: here's a big tip: end of wave is usually the hardest part because the baiters go crazy. What I didn't know forever was that the transition from four enemies to three enemies remaining is when the craziness happens. Another trick: get good at baiters. Just baiter hunt at wave end. Do a whole bunch of games like that for practice. And if you're on facebook check out Williams Defender Players Unite. There's Robotron discussion on there also.

    How did they get that glow on the graphics a blitter?

    • @modolief
      @modolief  2 года назад

      Well ... this is a CRT screen being filmed with an iPhone 6. It might just be an outcome of that combination. There is a lot of lag in the video due to painting the screen line by line.

    Check this Defender 3D game out. It's amazing. I bought it yesterday. It plays so much like the 80's game but with tons of new features:

      Yep, in takeaways and all the real arcades I ever saw were by the seaside, not in the highstreets of normal towns.

    Is Stargate the sequel to Defender?

    • @modolief
      @modolief  Год назад +1

      Yes, Stargate was made about a year after Defender by the same programmers ( Eugene Jarvis, Larry DeMar, Sam Dicker, Paul Dussault) and working for the same company (Williams Electronics). It runs on somewhat beefier hardware, but the company didn't give the programmers enough time to make a really great sequel, so it was not nearly the ground breaking game that Defender was.

      @@modolief Thank you for replying back to my question. I was gifted this machine in basically mint condition, the cabaret version from a gentleman that worked for Williams for 20+ years. He told me the battery board needs work and a cap kit, right now it doesn't turn on I guess... This is my first REAL Arcade machine and I gotta learn how to fix it. Any help from anyone in the community is appreciated.

      @@Spawn-wt6ul There is a guy in San Francisco, California named Matt Householder who is _really good_ at fixing these things. You can google him via "San Francisco Audiophile Society" to get his contact info, and he is also on LinkedIn as the Chief Fun Officer at Play on Games. Send him a message, or call. If you're not local for him, he might at least have some good suggestions for you.
