It doesn't matter whether it's 'cranked' or not - it shouldn't happen. A quality snare - any snare - should be able to handle high tunings easily. That's terrible.
I have been receiving messages and even calls about this happening to other drummers from all over the world. To think there are drums under high tuning that were made in the 50's still going strong, it's just so frustrating.
Happened to me too! The big problem I had was that yamaha (italy) doesn't have anymore this kind of lugs. New golden lugs are mounted the opposite: the place that has to be up is down. I solved it giving the snare to an expert that made a new hole in the snare so i could buy the new lug model. But it happened more than one time, so, i changed all of them and made the work to all the snare
All of them have the same issue. It's definitely a design flaw. it happened to me too and I took apart all the parts, filled all the screw holes with wood, re-drilled it for 8 lugs instead of 6, and mounted a new set of lugs with 2 screws each instead of only one. New 8 lug die cast rims too. A lot of work but it really paid off. I love that snare.
I bought this drum when it first came out, before i became a Yamaha endorser in around 1994. I used the h*** out of it in all kinds of conditions, tunings etc. I also have a 1997 maple custom kit that i still use a lot and i never had these kinds of issues with any Yamaha drum or kit I ever had. Enjoying your channel!
It's funny, I only just saw a photo of Dave Weckl holding one of these things, and I thought "what the heck is that - it has a bigger snare mechanism than my old Pearl FF". Then I came here to see it in action. It does sound really nice, but I think I'll stick with my Pearl Free-Floater.
Dave should be ALL over this! His rep is on the line and knowing his personality, he would be the one to call Yamaha over this! This will ruin his day if he sees this...
I think Yamaha are aware of the problem and I don't know if Dave would ever see this or if this issue ever happened to him or other artists but it would be nice if Yamaha fixed the issue.
Thanks Andy, I think the reverb is nice but does hide some of the characteristics of the drum and have heard a fair amount of criticism over it but.....it sounds brilliant in my opinion.
So what did you end up replacing the lug with? I have one and the same thing has happened to me 2 times, I found a store that ordered me some, put em on and no time later had a couple more break. I’d love to use the snare it’s been just sitting and collecting dust for about 10 years.
I have a similarly aged Maple Custom snare drum that has almost all new lugs on it. I've had it for years. I'm not a heavy player, nor do I tune my drums very high. It's frustrating being that it is a sensational sounding drum.
This is actually common thing on my starclassic maple drum kit i have replaced 4 of these on my tom toms so far, but tama sc have 2 screws on one lug so it never snaps off like that and you can continiue the gig, one screw end up inside the drum so it just rattels little bit.
I AM DRUMMER They’re made of inferior pot metal. I hope Yamaha sorted this out. I remember a few years back I wanted to do a custom build with these same lugs and the drum shop owner wouldn’t sell any to me. He had a drawer full of them and was selling them at $5 each. He didn’t go into detail at the time but mentioned they weren’t made to spec and the drum would be useless in 3 months. Then he pointed to a pile of custom snares he made with a disappointed look on his face. Then he got whisked outside as a delivery truck arrived so I couldn’t get the full story and I never bothered asking him about it again.
The same thing happened to my Akira Jimbo a few years back (2011/2012, but I’m leaning towards 2011 - I reached out to Yamaha December 2012 via email), and it has been benched ever since. I was given the following part number for that drum, which is U0030950. It appears that the design is similar, with the single pin. All twelve lugs on the Akira Jimbo needs to be replaced. You know what they told me when I presented this issue to them? They told me “$16.99 per lug casing and it does not include the insert, and there may be a shipping charge but you would need to ask the parts department when placing the order.” I still have the original email communications that were sent to them, including photographic evidence of the product defect. Upon review of the photographs, there appears to be a crack in the finish where the receiving hole is located, and I’m hoping that it’s just that, and not the shell itself. Great customer service by not standing behind an obvious product defect!
It happened to my yamaha vinnie snare as well. Guess I m not the only one. But that weckl snare sounded great just too bad for shitty lugs, and to get that particular spare lug is really hard to find or source for it.
too late for an answer on this, but i must comment. I had the great luck of hiting 2 of this same model maple snares in the same size (14x5), a yamaha custom copper on 14x5,5 (seamless shell) and after those the Dave weckl aluminum NOS in 14x6,5. Inspecting the maple ones in the process of choosing one to keep and other to sell i noticed the oder one had the lugs with the holes and point of hold to the shell BACKWARDS. so i checked on the other two snares, to see if they also differed between them. the two other snare´s lugs were with the same disposition of the more newer maple snare, so i guess yamaha has changed the disposition of the pint and the hole for the lug tension rod for a reason. that said, i decided to sell the older one becasue i may have at least some other lugs to switch between snares (cause other two ones were keepers for me)
i hope Weckl is taking some responsibility for this- they didn't just put his name on it by accident, he approved. also, you were right to come back after the demo and vent, you have nothing to apologize for. and showing the extent of the damage was smart. good luck, brother.
I have had a couple of these sets from the 90's. They are my favorite kit for modern sounding stuff, but these lugs are awful for high tuning. I have a beech custom snare with similar single point lugs (I believe same as the absolutes) and they have had zero issues. The real frustration is my snare's bore pattern really prevents me from doing much- you can't really switch them out for anything else because of where the bolt is located vertically...
Great video, sorry to see this happen. I have this drum, I was lucky to have won it years ago in a store draw. I will be careful not to crank it too high now! Wow. I should inspect the lugs up close for cracks as well, before the next gig .. although I do always take a spare snare.
Great sound, great video and great demo!! I just bought a Dave Weckl Sig Snare 2nd hand today, 14x5 black with other lugs , I hope it doesn't happen to me.. Will you also demo more of Weckl's sig snares ?
I have a couple others as well as the 30th anniversary snares sitting here waiting to be used. The later models using the hook lucks don't have this issue.
damn, ive never had this happen to me in any of my snares and i dont have snare drums that are crazy expensive. does yamaha give out any warranty for this?
Love your videos mate, very informative and most enjoyable. Big shame about the failed Yamaha snare lug, I’ve stuck with this brand for well over 20 years but have experienced annoying ‘captive nut’ ‘pull out’ in the 9000 series Cymbal stand height adjusters and also more recently ongoing ‘hex bolt’ ‘pull out’ / “fall out” in their Rack Tom mounts. Their designs appear to have insufficient metal in critical / threaded areas.
so I just bought a snare like this, and I saw that you were able to find replacing lugs. do you remember where you bought this lugs? I might have to buy some just in case anything happens....
I know Yamaha still has them in stock or had them at the time when I needed some but it was not easy to obtain. As there are two models available sourcing the correct ones can be difficult.
Hmmmm... I purchased 13” and 14” of those models. I’ve been worried all time that this might happen. I don’t know if I bought after improvements from Y or before?! How would the reinforced lugs look like inside?
Only way to really tell is to take a lug off and the locator pin will be located to the bottom of the lug and not the top like these ones. I have the Weckl 30th snares and I am thinking of taking one off and sing ho they designed these ones.
that would be intresting to know. I have both (13 Maple & 14x5.5 Brass 30th Anniversary Snares. It would be terrible if this "pop" would happen to one of these drums.
Are the lugs solid brass or simply brass plated ? For the entire lug to simply shatter under medium tension is odd. I agree with you it’s likely just a defect in design. Possibly material as well.
My brother in law had the same snare with the same problem... In fact it was a few lugs that went over time... Just sad for a beautiful sounding snare drum.
Joe Rico sorry to break it to you, Tama have had problems with numerous varieties of their lugs in the past - the most well known being their piccolo lugs. But there are many other pot metal castings on their older drums that have failed under tension. Point blank.
I was more annoyed that it on for years and years and nothing was done. They rectified the issue but people with the first design lugs are pretty much up the creek.
Is that just the 13? Or is the 14 prone to failure as well? I’m guessing the 14 will spread the tension over more lugs, but if the lugs are still 1 pin design then I’m guessing the 14 will also fail eventually. Got my 14 many years ago - no problems - yet...
Same thing to my tour custom yamaha snare lol. Probably yamaha snare can't hold a high tuning snare. I broke 3 of the lugs now. I own the drums like 7 years. Now I'm buying a mapex snare bcs im broken as a student lol
Try Drum Source based in the U.K. I'm sure I've seen these lugs on their website. Not sure if they ship over seas though. Great sounding snare, be a shame to not use it. Hope you get some joy :)
Excellent idea, my model isn't listed but I will send them an email and see what they have, I have also contacted Yamaha but I might have a friend here in Australia that has a small stash of them.
I have located some spared here and there but they haven't been made since the mid 2000's and SAKAE wouldn't have anything. Have to go through a supplier like a store etc, I did contact my old AR rep at Yamaha but there is no spare stock what so ever.
I encountered same issue for three times before, which happened on YAMAHA, Mapex and Pearl snares. Probably I did something wrong. Didn't expect that same issue happened on Dave Weckl's Signature one.
Oh man, what a shame! This is exactly what happened to my 90's Yamaha Maple custom vintage finish that I got brand new back then in 1997! Though I have to admit that it took ~9 years for this to happen... It was my only snare during this time, and I beat the crap out of it, on shows and in studios... Still, this is NOT supposed to happen!! (I.E: My late 1950's Gretsch Max Roach snare is more resilient than this one...) - Hope you can find the a replacement lug, they have them on eBay from now and then... I found a replacement back then so its all functioning now, though I don't play with it too often, cos I am afraid that I'll break another lug :-(
It's frustrating and annoying as I have another 5 snares that suffer from it and I will not bench them all in fear of this happening again. They should in all honesty remake or continue to supply us drummers these parts due to there very clear failure.
Well sadly it happened to my Sonor 13’ Benny Greb sig snare. I would never never ever have expected that to happen to a ‘German’ make Sonor snare. Never in my wildest dreams. I had that snare for less than 3 months and was kept mostly in my snare bag. Seldom played on. Then the lug popped. That said, it was a great sounding snare. I have stopped using Sonor ever since. Owned a Prolite and I sold that one off too. But more because the added weight & sheer size of the removable butt plate is just pointless to me.
I swear I saw the lug to the left of the name-plate move out a bit when you cranked it. Have you removed all the lugs and checked for hairline cracks etc.? If I were you I would throw them all in the bin and get some solid custom lugs on that thing. The only problem is that they will have to cover the footprint of the old lugs or it will look bad. A machine shop should be able to do it for you. It's a nice project. Too bad Honda don't make drums, eh? :)
@@IAMDRUMMER im not laying bro, I buy new snare because of that!! Oak custom really sounds great all kit but this lugs.... 🤔🤔🤔🤔They have some plastic part inside and this really I don't how to say to much pressure and they are damaged.... And to find it is another problem, I order from Italy, England, Spain........ Crazy, now I buy LP 14x8,5 and it is great snare if you you can check on my Chanel and was not expensive I found new one for 250€!!!!!
I had the 14” D. Weckl snare drum, ALL of those top head golden lugs broke within a few months of playing... so yeah now I have gold lugs at the botton and those dark grey metal lugs on top...pretty hu?So upsetting, this snare is still one of the best ever made in my opinion and I love it..but man that was really disappointing.
Wow, what a letdown bro, glad a few peeps here can sort you out, if not I would of directed you to www.jaminsam.com, he would of had something to replace it, As for the snare :( what can I say, Dave Weckle is one of my fav all time players and he would be pissed about that defect am sure and would probably personally contact you in this case, however i didn't like the low tune nor the mid tuning, was really hoping to hear the high as Dave is often on a high tune snare, Am wondering though, wouldn't a 6 lug snare struggle to hold such a high tension!?, I use a Ludwig Lm402 14x6.5 Supraphonic myself which is 10 lug and is great in all tunes, hope you sorted it out, Am also an Aussie
That ain’t no kinda brass under that plating.... That’s jennyoowine Chinese pot metal, and it’s shear strength is virtually nonexistent. Ludwig is guilty of the same crap, Ive had those “legendary” lugs do the same thing at VERY reasonable, normal tension. Those aren’t one-pin lugs either, so I don’t think that’s the issue. You could make that same lug from the same metal, with 3 locator pins and it’d probably still just fail at some point. Brass is relatively malleable, but it’s also fairly strong. Junk pot metal however, shouldn’t be allowed near a drum or a hardware store. I hate to see anyone fall victim to shoddy parts in any context, and I think it’s fair to say I’ll definitely think twice about buying any Yamaha gear! Hey, everyone makes poor choices, including drum makers - BUT, the thing is you’ve gotta stand by what you made. The best companies contact YOU and say hay we made a mistake and we’d like to make it right. A company ignoring a known issue is a deal breaker, I personally won’t do business with a company like that. Thanks for putting us in the know!
MrB Pies You might be on to something as the years leading up to me changing to DW I started striping threads on stands and pedals were breaking with all the die cast components.
Yamaha is quality and that's s joke that's a top of the line snare you should call Yamaha and bitch j know they won't do anything that's be to say the least hell a tko or sears snare would be better quality
Why only that lug? It may have simply been a manufacturing defect of that one lug.. Never mind. I did not realize it was such an early model. I know today it would not happen.
Looks like Yamaha is going to be refunding a lot of customers there money for one, and going back to the drawing board and rethink the parts they make that drum with. Yamaha is a high end brand name, and for the $$$ we drummers pay we should get high quality gear.
Did DW pay the guy to have the lug issues? I've had all kinds of Yamaha snares including the Erskine and Maple Custom, the 493 brass etc. Never had any issues. Weird.
DW and all of my sponsors actually don't pay me cent and if you look at the previous comments you will see many people have issues with the old Maple Custom lugs.
He’s a drummer, not an engineer. All drum manufacturers use an artists name to sell drums, and while they are consulted, the artist is reliant on information and assurances from the company. The fault lies with Yamaha for releasing a flawed product to market. They should have told Weckl it was not viable. If he really wanted it they could have just made him some exclusively.
@ 5.41 you could clearly see the top hoops bent closest to camera and the tunings rods were pretty tension-ed already.Pretty sure if you showed this to Yamaha they would see straight away the issue...operator error.
star3710 Actually there is no operator error on this one as the low tuning was was 1/2 turn past wrinkle point, medium tension was 3/4 turn and high tension was 1/2 turn. As mentioned on another comment the hoop tension is spread over 6 lugs and not 8 or 10 and there is a reason for this. Yamaha can't sort an issue out on a discounted item especially after they changed the design to help prevent this from happening.
star3710 They can't hold a lot of tension and the reason for the six lugs is the idea that the drum can be quickly detuned with only one tuning rod being turned, this causes one issue. most snare drums have 8-10 lugs per hoop and this helps with tuning and also spreads the tension across the hoops....so all that tension is only over 6 lugs on these drums and with zinc diecast lugs something has to give.... And it did :( The hoops are a triple flange and having the tension spread out over 6 lugs instead of a standard 8 on a 13" snare the hoop is under a large amount of stress.

People are getting creative with this issue, something that I think is a great thing for such a basic design flaw.
That's infuriating.
@@abcdefu359 absolutely

Two mounting screws are definitely ideal with single lugs, one does work but with high tension over time things just have to let go.
Will the lugs on my Aluminum Dave Weckl do the same? I'm on my way to detune all the lugs asap.
Easiest way is to take one of them off and have a look but at some point over time they may all suffer from high tension weakness.

Yep back when there were few options compared to todays market you wanted a high drum you paid top dollar.
So did you contact Yamaha
Sakae or Yamaha Taiwan?
I have located some spared here and there but they haven't been made since the mid 2000's and SAKAE wouldn't have anything. Have to go through a supplier like a store etc, I did contact my old AR rep at Yamaha but there is no spare stock what so ever.
I encountered same issue for three times before, which happened on YAMAHA, Mapex and Pearl snares. Probably I did something wrong. Didn't expect that same issue happened on Dave Weckl's Signature one.
Over time and use these things just happen with single bolt tension lugs, these are just prone to it.
Wow! In 44 yrs, thats never happened to me.
First time for me, hopefully the last.
Sounds good indeed!
Thanks brother.
What is the point of spares? They are going to break too.
Exactly.
snares should be like tube lugs or 2 rod lugs but i have a cheap sp snare w lugs like that and no prob cranking it so far.
Have the same snare, the same thing has happened to me a couple times. A snare for this amount shouldn’t have lugs popping like this.
yamaha drums official may hate you for putting this video up XD
I have asked them to bing the lugs back in to production for the drums that have long since been retired....they won't.
NOOOOOOOOO not the Greb?
I have the same snare, sounds awesome, But I've replaced 2 lugs and them had another pop. sucks
It really does and from the feedback I am getting maybe I should contact YAMAHA about this issue we have all had.
I AM DRUMMER yeh man, if you do so let me know what they say. I'd like to find a whole set of new lugs to replace em
I haven't checked the lugs since I rebuilt it but all appeared fine, the drum now sits in a case and that's as far as it will go.
This is problem with yamaha lugs, I have problems with Yamaha Oak Custom, til now I change maybe 10 pcs, and it is really shit to find it!!!!
Mate you aren't wrong at all, I think those Oak Custom lugs they are especially rare as they weren't a popular drum line.
Crazy, now I buy LP 14x8,5 and it is great snare if you you can check on my Chanel and was not expensive I found new one for 250€!!!!!
you may find a donor drum for a lug, or get one some social media selling pages.
crymzynplague I have a friend with some spare lugs and I know I have some floating around in storage somewhere....I think.
Yep really want them to start making these lugs again.
I actually have some of these lugs.
Keep them handy, these things are like GOLD these days.
Do you want to sell some?
Which ones do you need?
Wow, what a letdown bro, glad a few peeps here can sort you out, if not I would of directed you to www.jaminsam.com, he would of had something to replace it,
As for the snare :( what can I say, Dave Weckle is one of my fav all time players and he would be pissed about that defect am sure and would probably personally contact you in this case, however i didn't like the low tune nor the mid tuning, was really hoping to hear the high as Dave is often on a high tune snare, Am wondering though, wouldn't a 6 lug snare struggle to hold such a high tension!?, I use a Ludwig Lm402 14x6.5 Supraphonic myself which is 10 lug and is great in all tunes, hope you sorted it out, Am also an Aussie
Ive heard these lugs are prone to breaking because they are made out of brass.
Thanks for putting us in the know!
im so sorry man.
It happens, have some spares and always looking for more.
Should have been a recall???
Yep....agreed.
I have spares I messaged you on facebook 👍😎

Snap....crackle.....POP!
Sorry dude...that blows...not acceptable.
와 눈물...
I have to guess this translates to "in tears"?
yamaha small lug is actually durability not good?
Sadly these lugs aren’t overly reliable.
@@IAMDRUMMER thats sad. i also had broken tama starclassic lug. I don't know what to trust.
@@IAMDRUMMER and hard to find drum parts in korea
That sucks. You should send to Mr. Weckl himself
I am sure he has had the same issue as well.
That is sad very sad there stuff is overpriced I think anyways good stuff for the most part but overpriced very sorry one drummer to the next
China
Yamaha has problems with Hardware it all strips! out or just breaks! stands and Lugs Break also They have quality problems with most Hardware
MrB Pies You might be on to something as the years leading up to me changing to DW I started striping threads on stands and pedals were breaking with all the die cast components.
Hes on to something i have a yamaha steel snare and its a double lug design some of the lugs just split in the middle one is completely broken
Yamaha is quality and that's s joke that's a top of the line snare you should call Yamaha and bitch j know they won't do anything that's be to say the least hell a tko or sears snare would be better quality
I have reached out....sadly and expected no response.
for the price of that snare, totally unacceptable.
I know, right.....but I did find some spares.....
Good to hear! I enjoy your channel!
I wish but sadly would never happen, replacement parts would be nice....but also that won’t happen.
This is what happens out of normal use of a drum/a drum lug? That's pathetic!
Happens to a lot of them and us. Drum is now in a case in storage :(
Did DW pay the guy to have the lug issues? I've had all kinds of Yamaha snares including the Erskine and Maple Custom, the 493 brass etc. Never had any issues. Weird.
DW and all of my sponsors actually don't pay me cent and if you look at the previous comments you will see many people have issues with the old Maple Custom lugs.
Also the SD 493 lugs are a completely different lug design.
after 2000, everything is rubbish
Yes and no.
Weckl has lost some credibility with me. I don't understand how he could approve this. Even I would know better.
He’s a drummer, not an engineer. All drum manufacturers use an artists name to sell drums, and while they are consulted, the artist is reliant on information and assurances from the company. The fault lies with Yamaha for releasing a flawed product to market. They should have told Weckl it was not viable. If he really wanted it they could have just made him some exclusively.
china
This snare was made in Japan, hardware was either Japan or Taiwan.
Hi i appreciate you reply but please explain the hoop dis figuration...as we all know lugs will stress after a certain tension point
star3710 They can't hold a lot of tension and the reason for the six lugs is the idea that the drum can be quickly detuned with only one tuning rod being turned, this causes one issue. most snare drums have 8-10 lugs per hoop and this helps with tuning and also spreads the tension across the hoops....so all that tension is only over 6 lugs on these drums and with zinc diecast lugs something has to give....
And it did :(
The hoops are a triple flange and having the tension spread out over 6 lugs instead of a standard 8 on a 13" snare the hoop is under a large amount of stress.
