I have a 14" one of these. They are great drums. Like someone said, they had one snare that was supposed to be loose and one tight. When I got mine one of the sets of wires were broken, so I replaced it with ones for a 14" initially and had to follow the same setup as you did. I switched them up for 13" wires a few years later and really liked the results. I picked mine up in a even trade for a Yamaha maple custom absolute. I'm pretty sure I got the better part of that deal.
I have the 14 inch Weckl snare drum in showroom condition. I saw the drum in the window of our local music store and my wife bought it for my birthday about 30 years ago. I have babied the drum like an old classic car. Sweet drum with a sweet sound.
I have the 14” version from 1990. It actually came with different wires new. One was stainless, and the other was high carbon steel. Mine wore out and I went with a 20 strand Puresound and a 16 strand Gibraltar. I tune the 16 loose and the 20 tight. I have 13” sets on the 14” drum.
Amazing drumming! So clean and dynamical sound. A friend of mine, from Wiener Symphoniker orchestra played on this model 12 years ago, used this one in Vienna Concerthaus, but used a Calf skin on top. And the snare drum sounds very nice.
Nice drum. I have the same model you do. Dave likes the two different strainers so one could be loose and have an "Airy" sound. The other one set tight. He also likes the bottom head extremely tight. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) But the lugs on the first generation break and from what I understand are no longer available so I dont crank mine up. They also pull away from the shell. Dave is my favorite drummer of all time. I got lucky to see him in the Denver area in the last part of 2013 in a limited class. My first and only drum set lesson. He is so down to earth. He had to walk past me to take a break, so me being the intermittently outgoing type spoke up and asked, "Can we play on your set?" He said, "Go for it." Boom! I was there! We all took turns until he got back. I hope he comes through town again but from what I understand Yamaha discontinued signature snares. I dont know if they help sponsor clinics anymore. I've been through a lot in the past few years so I hardly touch my drums and dont know what's going on. Im trying to get back into it. I would love to have the 6 1/2x 14 aluminum and maybe a brass one. $$$$$$!!! Nice playing by the way!
The Simon Springer Channel says one snare is carbon steel in the other is stainless steel so Dave wecklement for one to be tighter and the other to be looser for interesting sound. You're drumming and channel is amazing by the way have a nice day
I remember reading somewhere that Weckl uses both strainers at once, with one set tighter and one set looser, so that you get a balance of articulation and sustain.
Very beautiful drum rick! And I know what you mean on those Yamaha snares. Ive got this sd493. Never heard a drum so resonant at such a high tuning before, even with its snare beds scratched up the way they are.
Interesting. I have a 13x5.5 Absolute Nouveau version MSD13ADW with 14 strand brass and 14 strand stainless steel wires. Seems there were a few versions of this drum. The lugs on mine are also chrome, not brass coloured. Love the playing. 🙏
I have the 14” 90’s maple version, too! I love the dual snares so much I modified an old Sonor drum, widening snare beds and putting on two strainers. We’re likely to move to the Charlotte area soon. Hope to see you play sometime soon!
I learned about the two different wire strainers after I bought a Dave Weckl snare drum. They are impossible to find, fortunately I found two of them "nos" in a small shop in Italy where I live ... but they have not been in production for years
That particular Weckl snare is from the early 90’s, it’s his first generation model and the lugs unfortunately had an issue called (DLS) but then Yamaha fixed the issue later in summer of 94. Great snare though if you’re lucky enough to get a later model…
Do you know if there is a published or specific reason Dave switched from triple flange hoops to die-cast on his signature snares? I bought a Yamaha Recording Custom 14x5 1/2 Brass at the beginning of the summer, and it has triple flange hoops. Sounds and feels great!

Dude! Your whole kit sounds amazing! That snare is phenomenal as well! Great playing!
Clean & precise yet swingin' drumming. Inspirational! Cool snare too 🙂

Thank You
Love the snare and demo ..
But most of all; it's all about your
incredible playing. WOW!
Love it. Tx.

You should be on the History channel!! Your drum knowledge is insane man, keep up the good work. 🙌

Thanks for the info, I did not know that.

Yes, that works well. 2 different types of snares is even better IMO
@@rickdior yeah, it sounds great!
@@rickdior Original snares are not the same. One is Hi-carbon steel and second one Stainless steel.
Yes, that's right but both types are curly snares and sound very similar where the orch snares give the drum a whole new sound.

Very interesting. Wow.
Impressive as always.
amazing sound
Love those orchestra snares.
I own Dave Weckl snare number 2415 which is the 14" maple. Love it. Great video and playing by the way. :-)

Thanks for your inspiring videos Rick ✌️

Beautiful cymbal set also👌🏻🙏🏻

Magnificent.
Pretty sure mine has snare beds. I took it apart and put it on a flat stone counter. There was light coming through where the snares come across.

Hi Andrew
I do not know the answer to that but maybe someone else here does.
But also.....that 22" ride sounds amazing from where I'm sitting. The bit at the end reminds me of a Harvey Mason thing from Headhunters.
It sounds great as well as the Craviotto set.
Rick, I would like to know what model is your hi-hat. I love how it sounds.
Hi Fernando.
It's in the description, Sabian Artisan Vault 14".
@@rickdior thanks! Sorry I didn't read it.
As I recall they actually use a wrap on this that looks like a natural finish. I remember seeing that. Can you check it when you get a chance?
It is definitely not a wrap. Same finish as the Yamaha Maple Custom drum kit I own, Transparent Black.
