Quite possibly the most beloved athlete in the history of Philadelphia sports.
Take away his stats, his hits, his interceptions, his speeches, his HOF jacket.
It all comes down to his passion and his dedication
He never took a play off. He never made excuses. He always gave everything he had.

Brian Dawkins is what every safety wants to be. He got involved in every aspect of defensive football. He was great in coverage. He came up to play against the run. He rushed the passer. He had the mentality to play any position on defense. It just so happened that his physical talents lent itself best to playing safety.

That hit at 8:50 that they showed a couple times really is understated here. Alge Crumpler was a big guy even for a Tight End, and Dawkins is small for even a safety. I bet there was a 100 plus pound differential there. And Dawkins leveled him

@@ultrahotwings9738 yes that is a great hit and i dont mean to be a debby downer but dawkins just had the timing there. if you slow it down you can see the Bus shift his weight to try and make a cut, basically he has 0 forward momentum, and dawkins just lowered his head and clobbered him. 10/10 times full speed bettis is leveling dawkins because of physics but it shows his talent as a tackler not just a phsyical brute force

Players usually try to keep the same number it just depends. Some teams have certain numbers retired so if they go to that team they need permission. Other times someone is wearing that number already so thst player coming in is working out a deal with the current player to be able to wear that number. Theres many stories of players paying out money so they can wear a certain number

There have been safeties who put up better numbers over their career, but I've never seen a more relentless player at the position ever. 13:40 changing teams and picking your number is a tricky one in the NFL. It's according to how big of a player you are talent and publicly, if your number is being used by someone you can ask for it, pay for it, or just pick a new number. NFL also has "inventory protection" from players changing numbers and the players have to buy the back stock of the old jersey.

Players will sometimes PAY other players to keep their numbers consistent from team to team. If #20 on team A goes to team B and there is already a #20 on the roster they'll either write it into their contract to keep the number or they'll politely ask the new teammate for the number. It's not uncommon for players to pay another teammate to give up their number. Some players though are so respected people wouldn't dare hold out. Hall of Fame bound players don't usually have to ask. Egos get in the mix sometimes. But if a Tom Brady or Payton Manning came to your team, they wouldn't usually give up their number. The polite legends offer to pay for the right to wear the number and the polite teammates defer to the legend. Sometimes they jsut want to be asked and not have it presumed. But if' you've spent your entire career with a particular number--maybe since age 5--it's hard to give it up even to a future Hall of Famer. It's a tacit admission of your place in the pecking order.

The didn't cover the Weapon X/ Wolverine persona he had two lockers, one was Weapon X he used on game day. He would come onto the field in crouching and lunging motion to the cheers of the stadium, using this as motivation to hit the field. He has sometimes been present in the locker room since his retirement for motivational speeches. He lives in Denver now though, because his kids have settled there with friends, we lost a great neighbor when he was traded and moved from the area. Doing a single one of those is hard enough but he did it all in a single game.

you mentioned Dawk keeping his #20 when he went to Denver - that's usually been more common than not, especially for a star player. usually if there's already another guy wearing the number when the team brings in a star, it's customary for the younger/lesser player to offer to give up the number and the star player to repay the favor either in cash or a fancy gift. recently there seem to be more and more players changing numbers though. there used to be strict rules about which numbers each position was allowed to wear, but in 2021 they significantly relaxed the rules, so lots of players are taking the opportunity to wear single digits or other numbers that were previously off-limits to them

to answer the question "do players often keep their numbers while changing team":
It really depends on the player, some will go to a new team and look to change their number, and some want to get their number back.
Tom Brady: When going from the Patriots to the Buccaneers he asked receiver Chris Godwin (who had 12) for his number. Godwin actually changed his number to allow Brady to have 12 again
As a note about changing your number after you've already been on the team, my understanding is that player has to pay the league an amount of money that would buy out their currently printed merch (shirts, jerseys etc), so changing your number costs a very different amount per player.
These piece of information were just gathered by listening to players talk about this process, particularly Bobby Wagner was asked about changing his number, and said it costs too much to buy out his old jerseys

For the jersey number thing, it depends on how popular the player is. Players usually will buy a number off of another player if someone on the new team already uses it.

On keeping the same number: a lot of times a player will sell their jersey number to an incoming player so they can keep it. I’ve heard of a player giving another player a car to get their number

When star players get traded, it's usually for a salary dump, the age of the player/veteran leadership to a young team, or because they are changing things/need to upgrade different positions within their system. When a player goes to a new team, number will usually depend on who has the number in that location already or if that team has retired jersey numbers.
