  • Yep, they're pretty sh*tty.
    The point of this video was mostly to make fun of bad mobile games and generic new AAA releases, but I also wanted to have a crack at figuring out why some people (including myself) perceive some specific games as being devoid of any life.
    Music (in order of appearance) -
    oDDling - Reverie
    SpongeBob OST - Twelfth Street Rag
    Efence - Spaceflight
    8 Bit Universe - For the Damaged Coda (8 Bit Remix)
    Chris Christodoulou - The Rain Formerly Known as Purple
    Chris Christodoulou - They Might As Well Be Dead
    Gameplay and other important bits I totally stole from -
    Left 4 Dead zombie animations - Crowbcat
    Battlefront 2 gameplay - Battlefront Knight
    Escape from Tarkov gameplay - Battlestate
    Call of Duty Cold War gameplay - jackfrags
    Call of duty Vangaurd gameplay - THE ONE BOOM
    Call of duty Vangaurd comparison - GameV
    Call of Duty Vangaurd bug - WILDCAT
    Battlefield 2042 gameplay - jackfrags
    Stardew Valley gameplay - Chill Gaming
    Undertail gameplay - top legend (I did find this on my actual playthrough too though)
    TF2 jojo poses - SFMist
    Soldier voice lines - 15.ai
    Well that's that... why are you here?
    Why are you reading this?
    what?
    What?

      speaking about gacha games, Mihoyo in general is an example of a more "respectable" mobile games developer, at least in my opinions. Despite their newest gacha game (Genshin Impact) is generally hated by everyone, the amount of effort put into a mobile game is more than most mobile games you see on the google play's leaderboard and one more thing I respect them is they are a Chinese company. And bois, it is a pain in the ass to develop an anime-style game while also having to pass the CCP's extremely strict censor system.

Those are, in my mind, the most interesting media products, specifically because they are perfect in their own strange way.

      The thing is the dev care about what aspect of the game?
      If the dev cares too much about political correctness of the game, it becomes a shitfest of propaganda
      If the dev cares too much about monetization to keep the game afoat, while it can survive and cover the cost, it may damage in the long run
      If the dev cares too much about his game vision without concerning about player feedback, the game is better off for the creators to play, not the general audience
      All these 3 things, and many more I haven't listed, are valid concerns from each developer.
      There are many things to care in the game. That's why every definition is made to be concrete and detailed as possible.

There will always be a reason to play each game over another.

So while there are good indie games, they are lack of exposure. I think if we introduce more store for indie games and let people know. They will know where to find.

    I always tought that. Regardless of how vague soul can be, Souless definetly is way more precise and apt and frankly should be used more because it makes sense and most people can get it, even if we have a harder time putting it into words.
    If we are to define soul, i think it should include 'when it clicks'. Passion and care, heart and soul(of a developer) can be poured into something that can still feel hollow in some way (ive seen a few of those). Im not saying flaws or bad gameplay/implementation/tech, more like all the good intent and energy being misplaced.
    Regardless of flaws, intent, being purposeful or by accident (theres a lot of happy aciddent messes full of soul, some great ones), i think what makes it hard to put soul into a good definition is this bit of 'when it clicks'- when things fit enough in a way that makes sense or reflects a sort of personality conveyed in the project.
    Like an AI with a fuzzy algorithm our brains is very good at noticing this sort of thing, what makes it hard to quanitify is the how/why it fits or clicks well varies in each and every case, to the point no formula can be put unto it... thus making anti-AAA by definition. It can and do still happen in AAA, both by accident as well a good creative lead.

  • @muffinmelody
    @muffinmelody 2 года назад +68

    It's important to remember that games lose 'soul' with time, just look at how Valve treated Team Fortress 2. The downfall of a game might not just be because of this update that added this mechanic which ruins this experience but the fact that the update clearly came out too early, is filled with bugs and is generally made without passion.

      valve didnt hire a bunch of new assholes that ruined the game, the tf team IS the valve team, it's just because valve's business system that makes its team just a HUGE team of indie developers, they can do something really not corporate

      While Valve has a structure of doing anything you want. You are forced to work at meaningful projects. It's pointless to work on TF2 since the game can not generate any more value for Valve to capture. It still has value to Valve, but only at stagnant rate. That's why they don't shut it down. Anyone who works on TF2 are told to work on other projects. Even if they are persistent, what can they do with the spaghetti Source code in TF2
      To Valve, the game has already pushed its limit. They have maintained it professionally for more than 10 years. And in that 10 years, the community had made Valve headache lots of time. There is passion within community but those passion don't translate well to Valve's quality. As a result, Valve has to cut lots of content because oh wow, who could have thought some ideas can be shitty as well. Also lots of infighting within community content creator causing Valve to stay away from community.
      Lack of trust to community content + The game reaches its limit + Burn out from 10 years of developing + Lack of value to generate
      You're right that games over time will lose its soul. But the general consensus I get is always that "they're lazy, heartless and stupid". No, you have to look at the situation at the most logical and rational sense. Every stuido has their own story. Some are indeed stupid as fuck but some have their own reasons.

    Great video!
    From my observation for shitty mobile games, I think the main reason why these games are so popular is because of how smart phones are getting more and more accessible and consequently results a larger user base (like how parents would buy a smart phone for their child) and it gets to the point where most cities nowadays incorporate the usage of smart phones to get around (transaction, communication, transportation, etc.), not because it's impossible to live in the cities without a phone, but it sure provides a hell amount of convenience to those who have it. There are more people who own smart phones than PCs and consoles globally.
    Consoles lag far behind; consoles are almost only exclusive to gaming, but they are only available at a set price and and in certain regions or for those who can afford it, unlike smart phones which come in a variety of price tags which makes them accessible to poorer regions and more worldwide, most people wouldn't even need a console anyway.
    There are more people who use PC (laptops and desktop) mainly for work purpose like business (from financial to creative design) or academic. The rest are, well, ones who use computers for entertainment, mainly video games. PCs are more affordable to game than consoles, and some people opt for PC's affordability instead of spending most of their wages (which are lower due to the economy of the places they live) on consoles.
    Compared to consoles, there are still at least some wacky and less polished games that are being played on PC, and on mobile? Even more wacky and less polished games that are being played.
    Apparently, a larger amount of audience results in lower standards of audience for the video games due to how more diverse the audience is in age groups and occupations (how much time do they have and how much do they care for games), but also providing a larger market share that many companies make use of by pumping out these kinds of games, or how bigger AAA companies are moving to mobile just because of the popularity of mobile games, it's only natural.
    PC and *especially* console games are more polished because the audience narrows down mostly to people who would judge the quality of new games and decide to whether play it or not (higher standards), unlike mobile games. And as long there's a significant amount of people that play shitty mobile games, mobile games will continue to thrive.
    For modern AAA games, I think the fact there are still players who would genuinely play modern AAA games (AC, CoD, Far Cry) no matter how dull or bland they are which led to lazier and less unique gameplay. But fortunately, there's still a few of new but "good" AAA games (I haven't played Elden Ring, but people seem to really enjoy it), so I still somewhat have some hopes for the future for AAA games.
    For mobile games however, it's only dread.
    Again, this is just my sole perception of my experience on all three platforms and probably still have mistakes. I'd love to hear others' thoughts on this, haha.

There's a lot more people on mobile games that don't actually know what good games are like, and mobile developers take advantage of that by releasing lots and lots of stuff to catch their attention. Mobile games, unlike console and PC games, aren't something that's meant to be thoroughly enjoyed and taken in, most people rarely play mobile games for more than a week, so there's less incentive to make a good game rather than many many bad ones where one might just get lucky.
      The big name games like CoD have fans that would buy the next game even if it just gave you a blue screen with the words "go fuck yourself", new CoD games coast on the legacy and the fans, so you're very right about that.

Not as being a part of someone's big company working on the game like cod (just an example) or something, but to come with something unique that won't be just another generic 1st/3rd person view game. To this day, i still have no idea what kind of game I'd like to create that would be pretty unique and interesting at the same time 😅 How hard it is actually to be creative

    Honestly this helped me fully understand the dilemma that I have been having about video games, sure I love them but like you explain they are getting soulless, and another reason I say that they got worse over time is partially just getting older, and so it technology, one part of games that made them so fun was the interest to figure out new cool things yourself but now everything is online and you don’t get that joy of finding that anymore. Another part is that people over time just get better at games and when they are basically the same game over and over its bound to stop being fun because it’s now just people that are way too good playing and you don’t get that joy of discovering a new game and the strategies and stuff.

    Well since you read every comment let me make one. I noticed that modern day shooter that all look bland and same are in a race to see who can make a "best gun customization system for attachments". This race is like the cold war arms race. They fail to understand that if you give people too much customization they can make weapon builds where the pros tottaly cancel out the cons and thats where we get the term "fatherless gun build". TF2 gives a great example on how to do this. BUT if you give them too little customizaton and personal freedom people will have have to rely on one another TOO much.
    -Fine example: In the Roblix experience "Warlords" you get to pick a unit when you start out. I picked the "Spearmen" because in real life they were very veristile and easy to use weapons. Turns out the game wants you to sit behind your teammates and watch for cavalry. Yes my first 2h of the game gave been spent on grinding with the worst unit in the game. I was hopeless without my team. After that i switched to the Roman legion and got run over by heavy cavalry because i didnt wait for my spearman teammate. So i bought some cavalry and got oofed by spears because i didnt let friendly swordsmen go first. So the cycle repeats again...
    -Hope you respond!

    • @P-Bean
      @P-Bean  2 года назад +3

      Thanks for the comment, I actually had no idea about that arms race for shooter game attachments, (if I'm being honest I still play black ops 1 multiplayer on PC and that's as much attachment customization as I'm used to).
      The Warlords thing is a bit of a shame because rock paper scissors gameplay has always been pretty one note in my opinion. But in all fairness the roman heavy infantry was heavily countered by cavalry, such as the Battle of Carrhae which was Crassus' biggest blunder. That being said there HAS to be better ways of balancing that sort of thing so you have a great point.

    • @SnepLeo
      @SnepLeo 2 года назад +1

      @@P-Bean I understand that Roman heavy infantry gets counterd by cavalry, thats why you dont stand in a open field with a shield formation without anti cavalry. But what i dont understand is that the "pilum", which Roman soldiers have doesn't get stuck in the armour of heavy cavalries. Which leaves them tottaly defenseless. In a rock paper scissors game that wouldnt be a bad thing, except other units have something to compensate for their weaknesses.
      Example: Shock infantry has a large focus on its primairy weapon and its ability to make holes in enemy lines with abilities such as:
      -Crusaders=>Deus vult
      -Berserkers=>Berserker rage
      -Claymore=>FREEDOM!
      Most shock infantry in Warlords doesn't have shields so giving them one was a great idea. They all share a "shock charge" that lets them charge in the direction you are facing and stun the enemy for 7 seconds on hit. Natural counters _would_ be cavalry and ranged units, EXCEPT the shock charge lets you close the distance with ranged units and somehow stun cavalry?! All ranged units have a secondairy melee weapon to be used if things go wrong. Spearmen, which are the weakest unit dont have a secondairy to compensate for their cons can only fight one thing.Weapons of units are not treated as solids, meaning that the tip of your spears cant defend a chokepoint. The enemy can walk up to you and make you defenseless. Spearmen being bad is just bad balance, but lets talk game design. You may think it is an rock, paper, scissors game with a simple 3 unit system. But its more complex than that. Because you have
      -Shield infantry(Romans,Aztecs,Spartans,etc...)
      -Shockinfantry
      (Hammers,Crusaders,etc...)
      -Polearms
      (Halberds,Lances,Glaives,etc...)
      -Ranged
      (Longbow,Rangers,Kyudo,etc...)
      -Swarm infantry
      (Peasants)
      -Heavy cavalry
      (Mongol heavy)
      -Light cavalry
      (Quibing)
      -Support
      (Tactician)
      For its complexity its really balanced most of the time.

    To be honest it just feels like childhood games were full of "soul" but if you play them again 15 years later you'll get bored quickly and move on. I think games being soulless is more of a consequence of overabundance of games, be it good and shitty games. Only the top 1℅ of games become recognizable because of this, there's just too many games on the market at once including the AAA ones which creates this effect that most games are soulless but in reality it's players who have just matured and lost this innate curiosity and fun in playing games after having played thousands of games. You don't see 8 year olds complaining about games having no soul because their imagination does the rest of the work to have fun for them.
    Nowadays when I play a game I have to seek a challenge to overcome or try to make a meta build to complete objectives easily but when I was a child I clearly remember that just seeing cool stuff and playing with that was enough.
    It's the same thing for real life games like football, when you're a kid just playing is enough but as you mature and play thousands of football games you stop just having fun and it becomes either competitive or you stop playing and start watching others play it competitively (esports for vidya). The best solution I've found is to start having other hobbies like reading novels or gardening so as to let my passion for games recuperate.

    • @P-Bean
      @P-Bean  2 года назад +4

      Yeah nostalgia has something to do with it for sure, and you're right about there being an overabundance of games since the medium has exploded over the past couple of decades.
      Interesting point about the main game audiences maturing, I hadn't really thought about it but yeah the target demographic has only gone through a single generation.
      Getting other hobbies helps you from getting burnt out but for me it has less to do with how I perceive individual games.

      There are other ways of being successful as a game developer, you can get a publisher to support you and take a cut of the profit to minimize risk, or you can be a hobby dev (I personally fall into this category) and make games on the side of a more secure job, obviously it makes development time a lot slower but you get to make what you want while not worrying about the success of your project. Being a solo developer shouldn't just be about profit anyway, since game dev is, to be frank, a very unprofitable job or hobby.
      And smaller already established indie teams or studios can still be stable, you just won't be working on your vision.
      I can't tell you exactly what to do but there are options and there is hope.

Towards the end, you had stated that you were trying to define soul, and at this point in the video I thought "oh shit, I didn't even realize" as if I was not actively watching the video. If I had to say what to do different, PLEASE grant some focus to your script. This video didn't feel clear in what it was talking about, and when it was clear, what you were talking about was heavily inane.

A problem I had when making this video was getting my thoughts across without sounding like I was rambling, and by the end I think I cut too much down that it sounded like I was just talking for the sake of talking. By the time the video was over there were over 6 different recordings from different days as I was cutting down or changing the script, which is obviously bad, you really don't want to change or revise the script midway into editing the video. Anyway I appreciate the tip and I'll keep what I learned in mind as I move on to newer videos.

    For the time I played it, I can wholeheartedly say that the new Mario golf game was an unenjoyable experience. The music was way too loud and obnoxious for a golf game, bringing me on the edge of a headache. I turned it off in the settings, but somehow, that made the game feel blank and empty. Most assets seemed premade, the mechanics where rushed, and it overall just felt like a poorly made game despite Nintendo’s usual churn out of fun and enjoyable games.
    However, Wii golf, a game made among twelve to be included into a twenty year old disc, had done all these things right and more. The difference? Love. They cared about their creation, and you can feel it.

If you don't have money you starve and the most open and easiest job they can find is working in an american Indian unity sweatshop with set in rules on never deviating from the goal of the publisher. I mean it's fine i guess you gotta follow them rulez and to never look back.
    The devs are not to blame, in fact they probably get abused and fired and replaced faster than a diarrhea contest in a banned 80's Japanese vhs tape about women shitting on men then ur usual ubisoft's

    I'm glad I stumbled upon your channel. You really remind of of Funke, keep it up and you'll make it big.
    Additionally, I agree in that calling a game soulless isn't a very good descriptor for what is a result of a lack of passion, or a compromise of artistic integrity for the sake of turning a profit. It completely removes a game's staying power when it comes to playability, game such as TF2 still have a massive audience whilst the Call of Duty game from 3 or 4 or even 2 years ago is essentially rendered obsolete and dead.

    Remember that NBA 2k20 accidentally had the 2k19 icon for the taskbar in the PC version. That should tell you how much of a same game it really is.

    1:49 imo that cartoony artstyle on the middle/left is actually decently warm, cute, and lively looking, the grubhub animations and "2d corporate artystyle" are godawful tho lol

    'soul' is one of the things that came to mind when I was playing Kirby and the Forgotten Land. I think I first thought it during the Carnival area, though I'm not really sure what specifically made me think it, but my overall impression was that the game just had so many fun details and little things to experience that it felt like the developer's had put real care into the game.

    Well I'm a subscriber now. I think discussions about vague concepts like soul in video games is inherently valuable. It may be vague and useless as a tool of measurement, but as a concept I think it conveys a lot of information very compactly.

    The only good mobile game developer, that has a large amount of these simple games would have to be Ketchapp. Their games have at least some quality and maybe a sprinkle of soul. They actually take some skill rather than the majority of games. Check them out if you want

    The passion segment really hit home for me, when the game isnt shaping up the way you imagined and time limits force you to work even when you dont want to i often find myself saying "this is good enough" when i know that it really isnt, that i would want something better.
    When your now learning game dev i think its important not to stress on your mistakes too much and focus on actually finishing something.
    But id still want to get rid of that good enough mentality as soon as possible.
