In this video I explain the Top 10 Ninja Weapons and Tools that the Shinobi would use on a mission in ancient Japan! The 10 items that the ninja would have taken on a mission are:
    .
    (01) Amigasa (Japanese Straw Hat)
    (02) Sanjaku Tenugui (Shinobi 3 Foot Cloth)
    (03) Kagi Nawa (Ninja Hooked Rope)
    (04) Metsubushi (Shinobi Blinding Powders)
    (05) Makibishi (Ninja Caltrops)
    (06) Ninjato (Kodachi; Short Sword Of The Ninja)
    (07) Tanto (Knife Used By The Shinobi)
    (08) Uchitake (Fire Starter Used By The Ninja)
    (09) Kunai (Small Shovel Used By Shinobi)
    (10) Food Rations Used On Ninja Mission. This is not just for the ninja on a mission, but also to help get passed guard dogs. In many ninja historical text, it documents how the ninja had to constantly deal with guard dogs and one of the many ways to get passed them is to befriend them, and to feed them. That way they do not bark when they see or smell you coming close to them.

Working through the list on would be used modern times.
A cap, lighter, folding knife or swiss army knife, a prepay visa card, clothes that can be turned inside out, lockpicks, pepper spray or similar, duc tape ( yes, I do know some people that have a bit of tape with them) , a weapon for defense (depends on which country you are in), And a small first aid kit

One other consideration is as you mentioned food supply for days of lurking. Removal of waste and suppressing noises like snoring when sleeping. Try hanging in attic for a week and not produce any telltale evidence of your occupancy. All of this stuff has to be packed in. When I was in the Army snoring could get you thrown off a recon team.

Hi again from your biggest fan :-D
The Metsubushi is by far also my favorite, NOW living as an impared/handicapped person I think a great deal about how i can better my situation as a handicapped, my handicap is not as visual as someone who use a wheelchair 24/7 I only use my wheelchair at home as a relief in the late hours.
I mentioned before in other videos the need for handicapped people and I must say you inspire more and more the more videos i watch.
(training a blind person ?? ) that is just awesome as in AWSOME!
Back to self defence, Here in denmark almost any conventional weapon is illegal and will get you 6 months in jail easy, so this Ninja has to step with *Uho*
Here is a tip for a weapon that a police officer will not be able to write a report for because it is absolutely legal in all countries globally:
liquorice powder candy... try and blow just a little bit in your face for a test, the bag is easy to rip and works as agreat substitute for metsubushi.
Other weapons that are not weapons can be a chainlock for bikes (kusari), even a bottle of soda will be nasty to have in your face, opened or closed.
Thanks for your inspiration and especially the asking of comments in the comments section, reading those are great inpiration also.
    Cheers ! Joergen

Among my top tools would be a multi tool, my folding karambit, and paper clips Paper clips are perfect for lock picking and don't cause suspicion. For snuggling bandages are handy. If you make a controlled wound smear the blood to make it look worse you can hide contraband in the bandage and people are less likely to look . Rope is great because a ladder with a frost knot can be made .

What a fun mental exercise, Soke! I think your list covers a general situation really well. I would be hard pressed to make a better list, especially without a specific mission. However, here is what I am thinking….
    1) straw hat
    2) water container
    3) food rations
    4) fire device
    5) tanto (Since the quote said be willing to abandon this, I would use it to pry, dig, or fight if necessary
    6) metsubushi
    7) caltrops
    8) pen and paper to write down info if needed
    9) 3 foot ninja cloth you mentioned
    10) I wouldn’t take a sword. The reason being is that the people guarding the enemy’s lord would be some of the best sword users of the time, especially the closer to the lord one got. Therefore, I would avoid a sword fight at all cost and try to get an advantage with a weapon of greater range like a yari, naginata, or bow and arrow. If my survival didn’t matter, I might also consider a firearm if my mission was simply to get close to the lord and execute him.
As you can see, my list is nearly identical to yours.
Future video idea (if you are interested): Top 10 Items a Modern Ninja Would Carry in a SHFT Scenario. That seems like a similar interesting and fun mental exercise.

As an Army veteran I can say this list is pretty much the feudal version of what a soldier would carry during deployment. Weapons tools rations etc. The one thing I would add is a bo. My favorite martial weapon.

Thanks for the post! Yes, I agree, the bo is a great versatile weapon.

By what I understand in my humble studies, Togake Ryu does have some versions of a long sword a shinobi may use for a mission, but this is in certain circumstances, and the kodachi was the standard. You touched on this, but the Sanjaku Tenugui could be soaked in medicine or antiseptic and used as a bandage if the shinobi needed to dress a wound, by what I understand. The list here is solid. If I ran into a shinobi, I would expect for that person to have these tools.

    What about ranged weapon?
Might be good to switch for it.
For instance, blowing dart are good too.
And you can submerge in water to breath with bamboo stick too.

I think some kind of projectile weapon would also be good to have, modern day would be a small handgun with silencer, or wrist rocket sling shot, small handheld cross bow or break down recurve bow, or even a blow gun....you just never know when you may have to distract someone pursuing you and silent projectile weapons can save ones life.

I very much enjoyed your video on tools the Ninja should carry, it also got me thinking that I remember reading and seeing photos from the first book written by Dr. Hatsumi I think his name is, he is supposed to be an authority on a branch of Ninjutsu, Toga Kuri Ru or something along those lines. He showed a set of tools that would have been considered lockpicks that were used to gain access to locked boxes and doors. The modern-day Ninja should be proficient with lockpicks and always carry them in his pack I would think. Anyone now days can take a locksmith correspondence course and learn to pick locks, they are not as complicated as one would think. Definitely a handy tool to carry with you, light weight and extremely useful not only when entering but also when one might need to exit quickly. Great Videos you are putting out, keep up the great lessons and history of this wonderful art.

I would say from years of practicing most of the mission preparation rests on type of mission. Clandestine entry might rely on more burglary tools. Arson may rely on accelerants and fire-making tools. Most missions were spent immobilized in an attic or crawlspace listening to conversations for days without being detected. Then E&Eing out there undected.

A modern kunai replacement would be a Cold Steel Sure Flight Sport (various sizes under the Sport name) as it is close to what you have shown, has a hole if you need to attach a cord, has a point but like a Kunai is not sharp so can be used to pry without cutting into things. It can also be thrown. Be careful with fire when close to the enemy, it will give your position away. Get used to spending nights out without a fire. If you need one for water, do it during the day where the light won't give you away, but still be aware of smoke and smell.
