If a ninja is to adapt their behavior in order to blend into society, it only makes sense that a ninja must also be able to adapt their fighting style in order to match their foe. It is not the perfection of the form, but the effectiveness of the execution that matters. 🙏

Well said. The fighter must become their own. About time i heard someone say it. I trained 10 yrs in Ninpo at Genbukan org. Modern modification is encouraged but still you see many training/fighting the same way. Before Ninpo I trained Aiki-jujutsu/Kung-Fu and after basic training you start to train "your" individual fighting style. All the higher belts fought differently. You couldn't tell they were from the same Dojo. Because I didn't want to be told no no no like this, I never told any of my teachers in Ninpo I was combining the 2 for me, today for the situation. Now like you said I have a Ninpo art formed to me - for me.

Dear Sensei, my name is Alberto, I am a ninjutsu practitioner who lives and practices in Italy, I listened to your opinion regarding the teaching method of this wonderful martial art, and I must say that you are absolutely right. The majority of teachers in circulation teach forms and kata as if they were a point of arrival, without understanding that we no longer live in feudal Japan, but in the 21st century, but above all, as you say, the essence of the strategy taught by the ancient shinobi, or the ability to adapt to the circumstances and needs of situations. I greet you and wish you the best for you, for your students and for your Dojo.

    Ninja.
    Spirit. (Awareness)
    Instinct. (No Mind)
    Mind.
    Body.
    Observe.
    Analyze.
    Calculate.
    Adapt.
    Survive.
    Kill.
Everything that a Ninja can use to suit their purpose to aid them in War can be adapted to their own arsenal.
To me a Ninja is a Self Aware Weapon Incarnate in Spirit, in Mind and in Body. So there is a foundation for Ninja in terms of martial art, but even those foundations were manipulated and adapted from older styles and techniques. To me, to be a Ninja is awesome, inspirational, and highly fluid. Thank you for the video and insight.

As my Shidoshi has trained and shown me the ways or traditional and modernizing movement.. it makes sense when you’d want a power stance and when you need to move in a close knit circle. Much as if you were at a club and an incident occurs where traditional stances will land you more in trouble (because everyone is dancing and drinking you’ll accidentally bump into another group) than had you learned how to scale it down to shoulder length stepping.

I completely agree with everything you've said about Bujinkan. I'm from Venezuela and I trained with them for 5 years, and it's true that everything is very traditional and there's no sparring or practice of that sort. Instead, you have to train in another style to at least be able to visualize if the techniques work or not. Bujinkan doesn't like to update, and often the internal masters (who mostly trained in other disciplines) don't help or do very little to encourage this type of combat training, all under the excuse of "Bujinkan is not about winning medals". But it's something they need to do to demonstrate their effectiveness in facing reality. All martial arts, whether it's Karate, Shorinji Kenpo, etc., have lethal strikes and have their own competitions... but sometimes Bujinkan has very absurd things or says very absurd things....

Most important thing I learned - Shodan is the beginning of learning.
I agree - you must master basics, but you have to break and bend it to what is needed, as needed once you really start learning.
In a real fight - adrenaline adds speed, and it's all shinken gata, not long togakure forms.

Nice! I think any martial art that represents itself as a self-defense art or warrior art, has to continue to evolve and modernize as we do. Everything changes, the clothing, environment, people's awareness and knowledge... So from a warrior's point of view, you might want to adapt techniques from your 'traditional' techniques as more people (as in potential enemies or aggressors) are aware of your traditional methods. Knowledge is power, especially if it's knowledge that your opponent does not possess.

I think what you say applies to any style and life itself. A martial art or style of combat is like a suit or suit of armour. The traditional suit must be adapted to the individual wearing it. Each suit will be slightly different for each person. It can be a balance of maintaining traditional fighting methods so that they are preserved, whilst adapting methods to make them functional and effective to the individual on today's streets. Many thanks for posting.

I have always said that all techniques are exaggerated when they are taught and worked on. But when applied can and will change for the most part because every situation is different even in sparring. And when you have a health condition or if weapons come into play (Especially in bladed situations) the story changes. You should not take a UFC tool box to the street: a place that has no rules, no referee and no corner men. It's primarily why I remained a free stylist (although I respect everyone's wishes to represent a style, system or school of thought).

Wow! Anshu you and I could have long conversations lol I do not have my own school yet (it is my life long dream) but I have taught several times over the years and have always stressed learning the traditional techniques but also required my students to explore variations and even come up with their own variations. No 2 students are the same, what works for one my not work for another for many reasons. Its refreshing to hear another teacher doing this. Its one of the signs that one is in a good school.

Hallo. Very interessting Video. This was the reason why is stopped with the Karate Training after 6 years. Some Masters told that you make mistakes in your standing or Kicking, Handtechniques etc. But when you have problems with the back or knees, than you can not copy 100 % the technique like a other person. I stopped the training and was looking for a another way to learn martial art. Then i founded for me the open System from Minnesouta Kali Group here in Germany. That included Muay Thay, JKD, Kali etc without test. Later i started a Studie for Goshin Jutsu and now i am a Black Belt. I think that you must find your own way to use the techniques for you individual.
    Best wishes.

Totally agree with the need for adaptation, as that should be at the forefront of all concepts if any form of martial art.
Constantly got into online debates with "experts" about only using "textbook forms" as a guideline on how to do things and then the individual needs to learn how to perform any technique in an effective and personal way.
It is like nails to a chalkboard the way the OP says "ninjutsu" though "nin-jut-sue" vs "neen-jew-t-sue" lol

Hmm, I have met similar problems with members of the Craft and self-proclaimed Shamen. Hidebound and aloof they refuse to engage in modern life and present a natural science like a pantomime. Nothing short of self-humiliation (and sometimes not even then, there is always something/one else to blame) can awaken these individuals and their conditioned followers to the improvements/changes of situation or philosophy since the writing of their texts. Curious it is that the hallowed (rightfully so in most cases) writers of sacred texts agree and instruct that evolution and personal perspective are definite factors when interpreting from page to brain to practical doings. It is a pity that those 'strict' teachers have such great memories but so little imagination, life is change in all its aspects.

I do not usually respond to comments like this, but for you I am making an exception. (1) You clearly did not watch this video. The video is VERY PRO-Hatsumi and PRO-Taijutsu. If you watch the video you would know that. In fact the video was against sport martial arts like MMA, and very much supportive of the Traditional Japanese Martial Arts. (2) The E-bay items you are referencing were Japanese Antique hooks that I got at an Japanese antique auction. Many of the ninjutsu densho talk about using hooks from fishing/boating and when I purchased the antiques in a Japanese auction, they came as a lot of 10. So... some where larger, some were small, some were sold individually, some I made into small grappling hooks that we see described in the Ninpiden and Bansenshukai. However, all of the hooks were 100% Japanese antiques... So yes, I sell Japanese antiques, scrolls, densho, etc in my store, as well as Japanese antique farming tools, gardening tools, etc as well... (3) Thank you for keeping up with my work all these years. I am very appreciative that you enjoy my teachings. Please subscribe to the channel and keep up with more future uploads. Take care and be safe.

Personal View : I don't care what style, system or what ever someone studies. the only time something is "wrong" is if it didn't work. Any time something worked for you, it was right. This right vs wrong ideas is..... well wrong. I can say that because this way of thinking doesn't work for me, there fore it is wrong. I am an old guy and honestly I generally don't care much for change. But when it comes to combat change is needed in soooo many arts out there, just to get them to work in today's society. I trained Ninjitsu for a few years and it was made clear to me that their art of ninjitsu was traditional and designed to combat Japanese, Armored foes on a battlefield, not for today's street thugs. Their way wouldn't change and I didn't see a need to defend myself against armored, Japanese fighters living over 200 years ago, so I moved on.

When do spy's turn into Shinobi in historical Japan? Historically Shinobi are of the Samurai class they are one in the same. Ninja ? Is this a modern term invented in the nineteenth century? The closest English description to the word Shinobi is spy craft ? Historically the duties of Shinobi were to scout ahead of the vanguard similar to modern day military scouting . There is no confirmed evidence of a Shinobi assassinating anyone in Japanese recorded history, perhaps because Shinobi were Samurai . There is evidence of Samurai clans who specialised in Shinobi tactics but there is no evidence of Ninja clans who fought against the Samurai . A question what is Ninjutsu ? Is it spycraft mixed with Ken jitsu and jujitsu ? I am curious because any discipline ending in Do is a sport any discipline ending in itsu is a combat discipline used for warfare.

  • @Arkhael666

If one is learning coding, infiltration, data analysis, actual spying, intelligence/counter-intelligence, all that James Bond thing... then yes, that's ninjutsu. If one is not doing that but rather trying to escape a tight spot... that's ninpo. If one doesn't know the difference between one and the other, one needs to read more history books, and linguistics and get one's head out of the 80s-90s ninja boom. Also "ninjutsu" is a very loaded word.
With that said, I agree completely about building atop the basics and adapting to modern times. Now in my training, I do taijutsu and jujutsu, but man how I hate that people assume that it's ninjutsu from the Bujinkan because they read "taijutsu". That organization gives true martial arts a bad name.

Excellent video. Right to the point on calling out the bullshit of ignorant and stupid ninja. I also like how you distinguished the difference between a ninja and ninjutsu.

I have trained in Ninjitsu under Professor Ronald Duncan for many years and I am so impressed with you and what you teach. I have been saying that about certain peoples (no names mentioned) teaching and training for years. I loved what you said and teach. Blessings to you my Shinobi Sister and keep up the good work!!!

If you want to learn something effective and quickly. Learn judo, BJJ. Muay tai. Traditional boxing
I assure you they train one way all the time because it works..
And if you're worrying it doesn't today. Buy a gun.
Ninja use weapons and are weapon experts. Don't try hand to hand with an art made for swords, spears, knifes, ropes, rocks.
Throw some dirt in the eyes.
    Ninja doesn't care.
And doesn't matter how big you are or how fast. Dodge a bullet.
    Modern ninja use guns.

Exactly why I no longer do nor desire to continue the bujinkan tradition. Good as those techniques are, failure to adapt to a world more aware of MMA and FMA disciplines will just get your ass whooped out there.
