  • Classical Japanese martial arts are ancient techniques that developed to help samurai warriors survive on the battlefield. In this week's special feature, our presenter Ayako Kisa visits the Onoha Itto-ryu school of swordsmanship, a school that has produced many distinguished swordsmen. Takemi Sasamori, the 17th head, takes us deeper in to the school's philosophy, as we explore the complexity of these fascinating disciplines.

    I trained with Sassamori Soke on one of his trips to the US a couple years before his passing. A wonderful teacher, and excellent and knowledgeable martial artist. He is missed. May he rest in peace.

    Ono-ha Itto-ryu is the sword style learned and practiced by the legendary master of Daitō-ryu Aikijujustu, *Sokaku Takeda* of the Aizu clan. The founder of Aikido, *Morihei Ueshiba* learned Daitō-ryu from Sokaku Takeda himself and as such is one of a few of Takeda's students to receive the _kyoju-dairi_ certificate to teach Daitō-ryu.
    Many of Daitō-ryu's efficient kenjutsu and jujutsu techniques was influenced by the Ono-ha Itto-ryu swordsmanship.

      @This is BAXTER It is, however to an extent it makes sense. Christianity used to be fairly popular around 500-1000 years ago within japan until it was outlawed. However most Christians kept their practice a secret by mixing parts of Japanese culture with Christian concepts to conceal the fact they are practicing it.

    I can see what this format of Kenjutsu is focusing on. It is the domination of the center line. A concept that is still used in HEMA.

    • @stickplayer2

      I've trained with the now passed Sassamori Soke, and that is indeed a fundamental principle of the art - strong ownership of center.

    • @Kumofan
      @Kumofan 4 года назад +5

      @@SuperHongTay it's because there's a general idea that kendo teaches you to how to use a sword in a real fight, not just how to whack people with a bamboo stick. While Kendo appears to be a sport to a western audience, a traditionalist/japanese kendo practitioner would be offended if someone called it one. Kendo is considered a martial art in Japan, despite the lack of martial qualities. Aikido gets the same treatment for claiming to be a legitimate martial art, despite not really teaching any useful techniques or applications. Think of the difference between a -do (kendo) and a -jutsu (kenjutsu) as the difference between HEMA and Olympic fencing. Olympic Karate practitioners also get made fun of by traditionalist/more realistic styles. Generally it's just safe to assume TMA focus more on the art and less on the martial (with exceptions such as BJJ, Muay Thai, Kyokishin, HEMA, and some others).

      Tyrone Kim maybe that’s was the more good traduction for a term of Japanese language the bushido was the way of the Samurai he was supposed to do anything for respect his rule even if he has to kill himself with the Sepuku,that’s was a lifestyle and nobody teach this because that’s was for the war only the Samurai is a Warrior not a soldier they’re was created for War.Thats maybe why they have used “classical” now it’s just the martial art of Kendo just your body is necessary not your spirit there his a huge difference between them.

      @tyronekim3506 4 года назад

      @This is BAXTER You're right - art can be classical. If martial arts is forever changing and evolving, it cannot be classical. Classical means doing the things the way it was done long time ago. Classical martial arts is a misnomer, because no one does martial arts as was done a long time ago.
      Most of the martial arts today are not martial arts - it is combat sports with rules. Martial arts means the art of combat fighting in war or battle with the objective to maim, disable, or kill the opponent. There are no rules.

      @HenryDavidT Most people learn martial arts not inside a church and I agree that it is strange that there is martial arts instructions inside a church. But in the 1960's, I learned Hapkido in one of the buildings on a church compound. I agree much you say about fighting (martial arts). Not too many people in martial arts share your realistic point of view; maybe it's because they watched too many glamorized martial arts movies. Good luck.

      I didn't say everything, but a lot can, but I guess it really depends on the type of person you are and the context of the situation. Then again military training is meant to knock all that out of you and make you a template for using your training without thinking about it, just doing it as second nature.
      Not too sure how military training compares to this however. It looks like a different kind of strictness. Interesting to think about.

      It compares since this was at one time military training for the samurai. Thing is, the samurai would have trained to actually USE the sword as a sword. These guys train to use it as an art form.

      I agree. It makes sense it would measure up, though the sword and the gun are of different battlefields, they are nonetheless battlefields. I think they still train to use a sword as a sword, but you would lose a piece of it due to lack of real combat, since tournaments are the closest thing they have to real battles.

      Is it though? Not sure these things wouldn't work in a sword fight.

    I'd say that if you've studied a martial art "for more than 40 years" and "still can't fully grasp it" well I'd say, maybe you should have spent that time doing something else. It's honestly a problem with disciplines where you can't actually gauge your progress by fighting.

      It's called humility. Something the majority of westerners lack.

      Maybe western swordsmen just have better teachers. If you're training rapier for 40 years, and tell your instructor you still dont grasp it, theyll admit to having failed you.
