- University of Oklahoma student Jacki Bradshaw shares her story about coming out amidst the heteronormative stereotypes of university Greek life.
My name is Jacki Bradshaw and I am originally from Jenks, Oklahoma. I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. What I feel everyone needs to know about me is I love to make people laugh, I am without a doubt an extrovert, and I am obsessed with Game of Thrones. What Being a Lesbian and a Sorority President Taught Me About Sisterhood
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
My boyfriend and I are both in fraternities and we couldn't have been more loved and accepted by everyone in both frats when we both came out. We really are moving in a better direction in this country on this issue! I'm glad to see people coming around
I am super happy to hear that this topic is FINALLY being talked about. Thank you, Jacki, for being willing to shine some much-needed light on this part of Greek life. It is way more common to be LGBT and in Greek life than people have been able to see. I know for me, I was one of the first women to come out on my campus at Kennesaw State Univeristy, while being a DPhiE and the President of Panhellenic on our campus. However, once it occured many more have come out since. I feel this had made our sorority community so much stronger. So thank you for showing other campuses and greek life individuals that its is common and than it can be okay.
"It's not the two of you in two different worlds , it's half of you trying to sustain two identities, which is emotionally, physically exhausting. If you are not yourself , you can never be the person you wanna be."
So true.....you just described how it feels like everyday. It kills sometimes not being able to give 100℅ of yourself....
the sweetest speech ever
Shannon Beveridge you're on TED! :)
WAIT. Was she talking about Shannon?? Like Shan and Cam?
She is. The documentary is called Now This Is Living, just like her RUclips channel.
Dearest Jacki,
I was a local chapter advisor for an NPC sorority for 13 years and wish I'd had your words to guide me, as I fumbled with saying the "right" thing. I fancied myself an open-minded person, until confronted with the reality that the women I was advising were no different (as far as their sexual identity) as any other women in college.
Ultimately, I said "we share values and Sisterhood, and all I want is for all of you to have relationships that are worthy of you as the amazing woman you are, regardless of who your partner is." Trust me, it wasn't at all eloquent.
Thank you for your courage and please know you have an ally in FL.
Fraternally yours,
Michelle
Yeah that truth
I am a member of a sorority and fortunately I am not closeted and I am hoping it will be more and more accepted.
Well done. Thank you for all your good work. XO
She's talking about Shannon?!? As THE Shannon on RUclips??
