Charles Nelson Reilly had a one man show a few years ago where he talked about the difficulties of growing up and being in Hollywood as a gay man (and trying to keep that a secret). It was called "The Life of Reilly" and you can actually watch it here on RUclips: ruclips.net/video/U1gTQ5Gxhpw/видео.html Such a funny guy. I always thought he and Paul Lyndt were the best celebrity guests back in those days.
I remember him as the mail room clerk in How to Succeed in Business--He was great--playing against Robert Morse. I think those comedic villainous roles must require an incredible amount of talent.
Charles Nelson Reilly survived as a very young boy one of the worst fires in the history of American disasters: he escaped the Ringling Brothers Circus tent fire in Hartford Connecticut in 1944. The fire lead within a few years to RB B B Circus's abandoning its tents and performing in more-safe arenas.
His autobiographical film "Life of Reilly" talks about the fire. He wasn't supposed to go, but snuck out to go. His mother yelled something to the effect of "I hope there's a fire in the big top!" and it haunted him for years. In fact, if he wasn't working, he never sat in the audience because of a fear of something happening"
Fans of 1970's "Match Game" should get a kick out of this episode, because it has Charles Nelson Reilly as a guest panelist. A far cry from when he was a regular on virtually the whole run of the 1973-1982 version, which had more outrageous humor, than the original 1962-1969 version did.
Charles Nelson Reilly is really interesting. People think of him as a "Paul Lynde" type who is really out there without saying the words (not that he could or would). Both men were stage trained actors who, while making loads of dough, are remembered for their "nance" act on a couple of game shows. But a week of "Squares" or "Matchgame" probably paid more than months in a Broadway production. I loved Paul Lynde on Hollywood Squares, but I will always remember him as the Dad in Bye Bye Birdie. Charles Nelson Reilly said during the McGuire Sisters set that he had a feeling before the show that the mystery guest spot would be two people. I'll never forget in one of his many appearance on Johnny Carson that he said he wanted the world to come together, that indeed, the whole world's problems would be solved if it would just come together and be one person. Carson was following along like there was going to be some resolution to this philosophy, but CNR was just riffing, and doing a fine job of it. One of the funniest men ever.

Actually, there have been a few times when Bennett has correctly introduced John by all 5 names: John Charles Patrick Croghan Daly -- and each time John has commented on how amazing it is that he has *finally* gotten it right after all these years!

It's sooo distracting to watch John get uncomfortable as he keeps looking at what I can only guess is a timer or clock behind the panel, especially as he tries to rush guests off and shoo them away? In all these years they never thought to (1) get a bigger seat for when people are forced to share or (2) maybe put a similar clock so that the panelists or even guests could see it and be warned about it in advance, so they'd know when it was important to pick up the pace? That would be so much more polite than John's constant disgruntled face as he keeps staring over the panelists' heads in a rush of anxiety to keep time managed.

Joe Postove That's what happening when there's trouble with the network. A quick reply lost, because the net broke down. But ok. Not a great loss, and I had to do some work anyway. ;) She was good looking, but her hairdresser shoud have made rococo curtains, not hair.
Joe Postove I'm just hinting at the 18th century's "Rococo" or "Late Baroque" style, in design. Everything, from furniture to hairstyle was affected by it, but mainly made for, and used by the upper classes. Very ornamental, rich decorations, flowers, laces, and romantic interieurs. Not that bad, and some of the furniture were absolutely beautiful. But in particular ways it went too far. Like those powdered wigs, and other ridiculous things. The curtains had several layers, often with laces, etc.
stlmopoet Marge? Wow! ;) I admit it. I don't like the 60's hairstyle at all, and I find the rococo style with rice-powdered wigs ridiculous too. Some could wear it, but they were few. As you can see of another comment on this page, I think "our Dorothy" looked good with her hairstyle (and perhaps her mood) the last 3-4 episodes. I'm old enough to remember my cousins hair in the 60's, and yiiikes!
SuperWinterborn maynardsmoreland stlmopoet Way too much big hair and false eyelashes in this episode! The McGuire sisters' hairdos must have been responsible for punching one of the first holes in the ozone layer, and Dorothy's eyelashes -- Yikes!

I FF through to see if he was gonna flip them over for the second one; he did and I knew there was no point watching it. As much as I SHOULD hate John by now, I can't seem to. But he ruins the entire show by doing that, and it's not FAIR to the game. When he does that, it's not even a gameshow anymore :( although it was nice seeing Charles Nelson Riley. Not to mention a special opportunity to travel back in time! Does he talk too much at times? Yes. Does he flip those darned cards too much? Sure. But please try to look past that and just appreciate the beauty of our show. You've watched 15 years of it now! You know and love all the regulars. They are like family now. Right? So enjoy them while we have them. :) And remember: the challengers all get the $50 regardless of the outcome of the questioning. They're just there for the fun too.

Lilly Beans Yep. I'm aware of it EVERY WEEK.....and have been for the last fourteen years!! So much so, I end up looking at the red line under the RUclips clip and worrying ON HIS BEHALF. Not just in case he's running out of time but also if he has TOO MUCH TIME.
I wish Daly could do it in a less worried way. Everyone and everything else is relaxed, cool, and dandy while Daly's having kittens in his pants looking at that darned clock!!!
They needed to eliminate the final contestant which was always hurried along and Daly flipping the cards after two or three questions.
What's My Line... Uncle Croc's Block... Something about CNR's resume simply doesn't parse. :-)
CNR was okay on UNCLE CROC'S BLOCK--but Jonathan Harris (Dr. Zachary Smith) was WILD as Mr. Bitterbottom on that show!!
John botched Brenda Berlins name! he doesnt botch often!...btw...what a HAIRDO on miss Berlin...

I'm More than willing to admit to one and all there are Two, possible Key Words that are maybe hard to discern; it SOUNDS like She Says "Are They Animals.. Rather Than Fish.. ." 😐🤨😐😐😬😬😬😬😬😐🤔😬 In Just Two Words, What Dorothy ,?. 😐😬😬😬🤔😬😬
Dorothy got the mystery guest answer, NOT BENNETT. He's rude and self centered.
Charles Nelson Reilly must’ve had a cleanliness thing going there. I noticed he did not shake hands.
He did shake hands; it was a joke about the fingerprint analyzer. He reaches out to her afterward.
What was one of the comments about? What happened with Martin?
Someone said, "So it's true then; he did have an affair?" Well that was the case, Arlene didn't sound too upset about it, asking when he was coming back!
I don't to step on any open toed shoes, but I thought The McGuire Sisters were nice looking, strong, independent, and did not need the help of ANY men whatsoever.
Joe Postove They were an army themselves. Even dressed in uniforms. ;)
SuperWinterborn I will join that army! Sarge, please assign me to the bras and panties detail!
Joe Postove Sorry! Strictly for sisters!
OK :>(
Funny they are being g posh saying hippopotami when the plural us hippopotamuses
How on earth did Dorothy guess the first guy had something to do with animals?!
Gee wiz, the second contestant doesn't look Canadian at all. She looks like a character from an Ayn Rand novel.
Joe Postove Did all her characters have bad hairstyle too?
No, but they were good looking in a severe manner.
Joe Postove That's what happening when there's trouble with the network. A quick reply lost, because the net broke down. But ok. Not a great loss, and I had to do some work anyway. ;) She was good looking, but her hairdresser shoud have made rococo curtains, not hair.
SuperWinterborn What are Rococo curtains, Miss?
Joe Postove I'm just hinting at the 18th century's "Rococo" or "Late Baroque" style, in design. Everything, from furniture to hairstyle was affected by it, but mainly made for, and used by the upper classes. Very ornamental, rich decorations, flowers, laces, and romantic interieurs. Not that bad, and some of the furniture were absolutely beautiful. But in particular ways it went too far. Like those powdered wigs, and other ridiculous things. The curtains had several layers, often with laces, etc.
Miss Berlin's hair is higher than Dorothy's ever was!
maynardsmoreland Worse than Dorothy's ever was too!
Looks bizarre by today's standards. But one of my aunts had a beehive hairdo in the sixties that would almost match Marge Simpson.
stlmopoet Marge? Wow! ;) I admit it.
SuperWinterborn maynardsmoreland stlmopoet
Way too much big hair and false eyelashes in this episode! The McGuire sisters' hairdos must have been responsible for punching one of the first holes in the ozone layer, and Dorothy's eyelashes -- Yikes!
On the general subject of fashion, though, I loved Arlene's gown in this episode! I wish I could see it in color.
Humorless Bennett Cerf already knew who it was with his first question. No fun.
:( after that first one when he flipped all the cards over for no reason, I didn't even BOTHER watching the second one. I FF through to see if he was gonna flip them over for the second one; he did and I knew there was no point watching it. As much as I SHOULD hate John by now, I can't seem to. But he ruins the entire show by doing that, and it's not FAIR to the game. When he does that, it's not even a gameshow anymore :(
although it was nice seeing Charles Nelson Riley. I never knew he did any other game shows
Krista Krista Krista ... I've been a handful of episodes behind you for months now (or years, from their perspective) and you get so upset with JC(PC)D almost every episode when he flips the cards! Don't skip segments for something so silly. You will feel so much better if you stop approaching WML? as a game show and accept it as pure, wonderful entertainment.
