- Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga is a wonderful indie blending of Fire Emblem and Ogre Battle/Unicorn Overlord. I binged it on release, and on today's episode of the Saturday Strategy Spotlight, we're discussing WHY it's so good.

Thanks everyone, be good to each other! - Игры
This game is way better than most AAA games.
The sequel has been announced, but I haven't found any new info on it. But I'm looking forward to it.
Our Adventurers Guild is something to look at, quite impressive for a single Indy developer on his first game, on Steam and a steal for the 15 $ price point
Always happy to see another one of your videos/recommendations. Keep up the good work
Hell yes! I like Symphony of War a *lot*. It's well written, the art is great, the music is great, the mechanics and mission design are very solid--heck, it's even impressive on a technical level. (I'm 99% sure this game is built in the RPG Maker engine.)
Well written? A character is a long lost king, he asks how, and the Mc literally says not to question it.
Awful writing
The story is beyond beyond beyond abysmal. Nice gameplay loop
It a classic hero story.
@@khanhnguyen-tt3ff A character finds out they're the long lost king and the mc says "don't question it" and then its never mentioned again.
It's an attempt at the hero story
As another fan of Fire Emblem I also enjoy this game very much. I’m not much of a PC gamer but you can play it on the steam deck too and it is great.
I played symphony of war a few months before unicorn overlord came out and it's really good. Probably why im burning out on Unicorn Overlord around Albion. For me i enjoy tactics games but i burn out on them, i can usually only play one or two a year. Im looking forward to more recommendations but it'll probably be several months before i can enjoy them
UO is not as difficult as SoW is and I feel kinda braindead in Albion. Everything just dies
@@mobius4247 Yup. Either it dies or I move somebody from back row to front to change the RNG and now it's dead. I started on tactician but maybe I should have picked the hardest difficulty
@@wJermell0 It's the same on Extreme. The last challenging fights I had on Extreme were the beginning of Drakenhold when there were 10 million wyverns and all I had was a flappy girl and Rolf.
try jumping into the ranked pvp at the coliseum, it might give you a spark to grind out the rest of the game to get the characters and items you need to compete at the higher levels of pvp
blessings on you, this looks great 😍
Thanks for covering this game, it truly is fantastic!
highly recommend playing again with DLC on new Ludicrous difficulty if on a 2nd playthrough - all the additions are super fun.
Aww I hope the dev sees this! Followed this game rather closely at launch and had quite a bit of fun with my time with it, and the dev streamed a lot and is super chill, along with his engine guru buddy.
I think this game primed me for being so ready to love Unicorn Overlord. And if you’ve not seen yet, Dancing Dragon’s right in the middle of making Symphony of War 2!
One of my favorite games. Played through it like 3 times which I never do with games ever
this years been a very great year for RPGS :)
Good to see you branching out. Wishing you success
Symphony of War is a great game! I loved playing it, and played through the game multiple times including the dlc.
Thanks for shining a light on this game for your audience!
YOU ARE AWESOME! ❤❤❤
Thanks for doing this video, I've been reccommending SoW to all my friends who wanted UO but don't have a console.
This has been on my wish list for a while it seems.
Yes, this is a great game. One of the best indie trpgs I've ever played. I'll replay it soon to experience the dlc and visual update.
Nice, thank you for recommending
@TitaniumLegman You should try and play Dream Tactics - it's another incredible Indie SRPG, with unique card based progression. It's got phenomenal customization, fun characters, and awesome music too!
For other games to look at.
FFT-style: Fell seal Arbiters Mark
FE-Style: Banner of the Maid (FE in a French Revolution/Napoleonic War setting)
Also If you can find it The Last Remnant.
Or something a bit older similar to Advanced Wars: Battle Isle 3.
I was pleasantly surprised with Banner of the Maid. A fun little alternative history romp.
@@stephhanley3167 Fully agreed. It has a few spots that you can tell are unpolished, but overall it is far better than i expected going into it. Might be a bit "simple" for a lot of people here.
EDIT: Another alternate history game i liked was "Krzyzacy - The Knights of the Cross", a chinese take on a polish classic, playing like Slay the Spire. It's odd, but i found it charming.
I've had this game on my wishlist for a long time now. Maybe this is the push I need to take the plunge.
As for other tactics games, check out Vanguard Bandits for the PS1 if you haven't already. Not many people know it, but everyone I've hear talking about it do so fondly and it was my favorite tactical RPG before UO rocked my socks off.
Played it when it came out and it's a great game. I haven't gone back to it since all the updates, but I plan to replay it again before the sequel comes out.
Would love to see a play through of this
This was the first fire emblem sort of game I finished, it really increased my interest in these sorts of games and got me to try out Unicorn Overlord when that came out which I also liked.
this game is awesome! i loved it
I love this game, it's awesome.
On the strategy front, let's go old and forgotten with Legend of Cao Cao, closer to Fire Emblem and perhaps even the simplicity of Shining Force, but the "magic" has some quirks as those are tactics (can't use fire without vegetation, wind inside buildings...), objective can change mid battle, two routes split in the middle, and reward for knowing the major duels of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Only permadeaths are the historical deaths but they can be avoided if you play well enough to prevent them from dying in battle
Love this game
beaten this one in 2022, a pretty solid game, defenetelly recomend
This is giving me some shining force vibes.
@TitaniumLegman
I would also suggest giving Telepath Tactics a shot. Excellent game
I have it! I've been in contact with the dev actually, just looking for the right chance to dive in.
Shit yeah dude! I played a teeny bit of this at release and have it loaded on my deck after I’m done punishing myself through tactics ogre reborn (chapter 4. Will I finish you? Ever?)
Shining force!
I have play this game and so far I'm enjoying it
I love this game with a passion. I have sooo many hours in it. It really has infinite replayability too. Its criminally underrated in my opinion.
I like the fact there are giants. That's neat
if you don't mind going back to the retro, there's Shining Force 1 & 2 on the Sega Genesis which you can play on the sega collection on steam. there was also a remake of SF1 on the gba that was amazing.
It's got all the NG+ options I want UO to have
Yea this is fun game. My biggest issue with it was it was so short.
Any news of switch port?
@TitaniumLegman Mentioned this before but I think Disgaea is #1 Franchise you'd love that you haven't dived into much yet (Specifically #4 & 5. My fave is actually #2 but that's not the best place to start to get hooked). Also huge recommendation for the Front Mission Franchise (#3 is especially classic). Besides that, NIS, the makers of Disgaea have made a ton of other Strategy RPGs worth checking out like La Pucelle Tactics, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom & Soul Nomad (Their own take on Ogre Battle style gameplay)
Basically, play all the NIS games, yes ? ;)
@@spacemonkeyentertainment6413 Well, almost all. Not too big on the last 2 Disgaea's but there was a good decade + run of NIS being one of the only companies outside of Fire Emblem releasing Strat RPGs on the regular so their catalog is crazy deep.
Would Love to See a lets Play or Guides
man... wish this was on Console or on Mac... oh well...
Only on Steam?
It's also so good they are making a Symphony of War 2
Harder to get ahold of these days, but Wild ARMs XF is a phenomenal SRPG.
A little heads up for new players. BEWARE OF CANNONS!!
Lol
Ps. Would love a few guides on this!
0:38 well hello mommy.
ikr
I wanted to see more of her. lol
Would you consider including lesser known older titles in this series?
If so, I suggest Rebelstar: Tactical Command.
In terms of of newer stuff, dev is slow atm but Lords of Nysera is shaping up to be a banger
Oh yeah, I'm open to pretty much anything so long as it catches my interest. I'll look into these at some point!
Yes, I've heard of this game. Sadly, it's not on consoles and I don't own a gaming PC, and I never will own a gaming PC.
Oh yeah I played this already. It's missing a few things that UO has for my personal taste. Fun game, I enjoyed it but I would have liked a way to grind exp. Do you need to? No but for me it would have made the game much more enjoyable. Some kind of optional grinding area would have been fun for a person like myself.
Deep fucking value game
Other recs,
XCOM EU and EW
XCOM 2
Dark Deity
Battle for Wesnoth
you should try out The Last Spell
Ah, Last Spell! I've played a bunch in early access, there's streams on channel even. I need to do more with the full release tho.
Symphony of War was so good!
I really need to replay it, I know they added a lot of content since the initial release
$7.49 on Steam, easy buy
And on the plus side. There’s no Lex in this game.
I want to be able to play a game like this on mobile. I think it's such a missed opportunity
I really miss the old brigandine in PS1 though... :') that one was my first dive into strategy rpg game.
Anyway, where can I play this Symphony of War? I'd like to try it from your video
It's on PC via Steam.
@@TitaniumLegman thank you for the info 👍
Are you familiar with The Banner Saga? I think you'd like it!
I do know of it , played a hit of the first and liked it. Gotta circle back to it, would be a good candidate for this series.
Great game. Mommy DIana for the win!
The video was so long I didn't see the title of the game, but all what I saw and the thumbnail I was thinking "Oh good, that sounds great. The last game that sounded that way was Symphony of War, which I kinda hated."
Oops
Well, once the glow of Unicorn Overlord wears off and I replay Ogre Battle 64 one more time, maybe I'll give it a second try. Honestly, while it did some good things, what it made me realize is that for me, I need that real time, non-turn-based overworld strategy aspect. The moment that becomes turn-based (I can't remember if it was active time or one side goes then the other, but if it's the latter, that might explain my dislike), I just... don't get that Ogre Battle happy-gooey feelings anymore.
I badly wanted to like this game, but it made me think we'd never get anything that felt like Ogre Battle ever again. (You can imagine my surprise and delight when Unicorn Overlord: Trot of the Black Queen's demo blew me away.)
valkyria chronicles 1/4, or anything from the series to ahead light on the vita games. Please I love these games and am so sad to see the franchise die off like this.
Nice
I would highly recommend “The Last Remnant” it even got a remaster in recently-ish
Fire Emblem if it was bought from Shein
The writing is atrocious tho, it really ruins the whole experience. you can really see the devs' libertarianism bleed through.
I'm still not over them complaining about "the central government" in medieval times smdh
It's not the best story/writing I've ever read - mostly due to pacing I think. But I definitely wouldn't call it so bad you can't enjoy the game.
Is it really that bad? In terms of character design it looks like no Californian consultancy group was involved.
@@phoenix.8679 It's not.
Symphony of War is actually quite a bit better than Unicorn Overlord, I would go as far as to say significantly so. UO has a lot of top tier waifus, but the gameplay and depth of SoW is so much deeper. Larger squads make it feel like true large scale warfare that only a few UO missions have, and it really lets you just go nuts forming as many deathball squads as you want.
Those are major words. More is not always better. There's no gambit system, class system doesn't seem as varied or deep, movement phase seems slow and dragged out (FE style).
I've been looking for something similar to UO, but nothing I've seen or read on this game has convinced me (I keep coming back to SoW, but haven't been convinced to pull the trigger).
Just heard about a tech tree. I might just have to risk it.
Edit: I despise almost everything FE and it's not on Switch, but maybe Legman has pique my interest enough.
Say what?? UO is on another level, SW is a game of past generations.
