- The Rossi R92 is a modern replica of the Winchester Model 1892. Mine is chambered in .38 special or .357 Magnum and it the rifle I used in Cowboy Action Shooting competitions. The R92 is available with the traditional "blued" finish, but I opted for the Stainless version for my CAS persona "Dick Silver".

Finally got a new 454 stainless recently and Build quality is much better than 10 years ago. Cycling 45 colt and 454 perfectly. Love it.
It's nice to have the 45 Colt option, 454 can be a little pricey! Enjoy and be safe!
Mine is in .38 Special, 20" round barrel. The action is smooth, never did anything to improve, I think who assembled it at Rossi was in a very good day. 😃

One of the best things to do with a Rossi 92 is to replace the factory ejector spring with a lighter after market one. Makes a ton of difference. And while you're at it, replace the plastic factory follower with a brass or SS one. Happy shooting to you!

Got a 24" R92SS, octagonal barrel 38/357 month ago and it's amazing accurate and gorgeous and no issues whatsoever. Been to the range several times already with different ammo. Even loads shorter flat nose 38 special, 125 gr, 1.4 inch or less with no problems or eject issues.
The quality and functionality is up there, probably close to Henry or Winchester at 1/2 price

They’re good guns for the price, I gladly spend some time smoothing them up a bit for the nice low price that these go for. I have bought four of them in different calibers and sizes for less than $700 each, when they’re really hard to find the prices go up, but there seems to be quite a few on the market now.😊

Good video presentation on my favorite aspect of CAS; the long guns. Here in the SW there was a gunsmith "The Rifleman" who did wonders with lever guns 30yrs ago.
My eyes are still good, but I haven't the hand speed of old, sigh. Still good to see someone having fun w/ lever actions. Subscribed, thanks for the vid.
In my opinion, the Rossi 92 is a beautiful rifle, even if the stainless isn't exactly "period correct". I've always liked both the long guns and the revolvers, I can do with or without the shotguns. The coach guns are my favorite shotguns, though. There will be more of these classic lever guns coming in the future! Thank you very much for watching!
I recently purchased one of these. I like mine. My local dealer got 4 of these and sold them all in a week. Continues to get them in and they do sell.

There's a few long guns here, among my revolvers. Without a doubt, my Rossi with the octagon barrel, casehardend frame, nosecap, and crescent buttplate in 357mag, is my favorite. Though it's 9 years old, it is always immaculately clean. Some folks think it's brand new. Wonderful shooter. And is the perfect companion to my Cimarron El Malo in 357mag, with the octagon barrel.
Have had several folks try to buy or trade for it, but I always turn 'em down.
In my case, there's no issues with the bullet design. SWC rounds in 357mag or 38Spl cycle fine. The only exception is in 357mag cases and the 173gr Keith SWC. Though in a 38Spl case, it too is not an issue.
Best bullet I've loaded is from an old Ideal 358156 SWCGC. In either Spl or Mag loads, it's been perfect in the 1:30 twist bore. The Ideal 357446 SWC is a close second.
Anyway, thanks for allowing an old man brag about his rifle. Love your channel and your dedication to the old school ways of doing things.👍

These are some great rifles. I slicked mine up with a total disassembly, polished and smoothed any rough area, and It was good to go. About the slickest lever I own

I replaced the plastic follower mine came with , replacement was stainless steel, cut a couple coils off the mag spring because it was a bit tight, and then worked the action a ton, it’s not bad now, it was a bit rough at first, mine is from the taurus era

Look up Steve Guns I believe thats the way to spell it. He has everything you need to tune it up plus it comes with instructions. By the way it is good to finally see someone who knows how to load a lever action rifle. I have two of these one in 24 inch barrel and one in 20 inch both in 38/357, great rifles.

I got into SASS just as the Rossi rifles were getting hard to find. I ended up with a Chappa 1892 from Taylor’s & Co. It is the best looking rifle I have ever had.

I have 4Rossi 92s. One is an older one without the safety, in 357. I changed the springs , and added a rear semi buckhorn sight. Another 357 16 inch with large loop, a 16 inch 45 Colt with standard lever and a 20 inch 45 Colt. They are all smooth and reliable , feeding round nose and semiwadcutter ammo. Used the 20 inch 357 in SASS and it was as fast and accurate as a92 Browning, that was pickier about 38 spl ammo. I have found that Badman 157 fn cast bullets work well in both 38spl 357 cases in the Rossi and Marlin 1894s. I foolishly sold a Stainless 20 inch Rossi 92. Good value rifles that have been reliable and accurate

I had a superb Miroku m92. The sharp edges of the loading gate is an issues even on that one. I stoned the edge and touched up the blue. With the Model 94, you don't repeat the loading process as often and don't really notice the wear and tear on your thumb. With the pitol caliber, you're shoving in rounds as fast as you can grin. Tear up that thumb pretty quick. With a stainless finish, no touch up required.
I appreciated that even more when I heavily modified my old style Vaquero grip, including removal of the plow points on the back and front strap, narrowing the wood stocks, and smoothing everything into a semi-plow handle. Looks beautiful, and fits me like a glove. Instead of those long points, there is a smooth radius of about 3/8" front and back.
I've been a professional pipe welder for 30+years and I have always loved working with stainless. It's easy to fix blemishes, especially in thicker materials and it can be polished to a mirror finish. I've always wanted to polish my Rossi to match the Vaqueros, but the fine "brushed" finish sure does hide all the fingerprints.

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview I think if you polish the Rossi, it may reveal a lot of uneven surface height in the machining of the reciever sides and you might be dissapointed in the "lumpy" appearance. Sort of the same thing on the inside working parts. They can use some slicking up by dissassembly and manual honing to deburr and flatten the parts.
As a retired machinist, I would suggest you use a known flat, thin straight edge to slowly slide over the flat surfaces to check for dips and high spots before you go ahead. Put a tiny coat of vegetable oil on the steel, then wipe it off with a paper towel, leaving just a hint of coating before you use the straight edge. Put a moderate light source behind the steel and slide the straight edge around in various directions, looking for light showing under neath. A fine polish is like certain colors on a car: some reveal past repairs or, less than sterling manufacturing. I think Rossi brushes the guns because it is an issue with price point. A polished gun will have to be more money. A satin finish is no defect and they can keep the production cost lower.
IMO, the Rossi is a great value and definitely a keeper. As far as I know, it is the only replica of the Winchester 92 with the long octa barrel, long fore-end with end cap, and crescent stock and in stainless steel.
@@OutnBacker Oh, if I were to polish it, there would be sanding blocks involved. I've done a fair amount of polishing stainless for the biopharmaceutical industry and some cosmetic stuff for myself. There are few things that make me cringe like seeing a mirror finish with waves in it. I've seen people sand out and polish a scratch, leaving behind a highly reflective ripple in the piece. Florescent tubes can really help with finding the flaws.

Nice review, and good shooting, partner! Got the stainless 357 R92 rifle (octagon) for the wife and a 45 Colt saddle ring carbine (1 of 2,000) for myself for CAS. I slicked them both up and they can be run with one finger, and after tens of thousands of rounds through each, they still shoot better than we can hold. For her 38 Specials, I cast the Lee 158 RNFP and my handloads feed slicker'n snake snot on a glass doorknob. I had issues with a couple other RNFP designs feeding rough, but the Lees are a winner. I really want a 454 Casull '92 to go with my Ruger Alaskan, but I suffer from sticker shock every time I look at one!

I have the Henry Big Boy X in 357/38 and I love it. Was thinking about the 44mag but didn't want to pay for another Henry. So I'm now considering the Rossi 44. That 454 sounds interesting too

Great videos loved the information. I picked up a 45-colt 20 inch barrell in stainless. Just had a saddle ring and a large lever loop installed on it.

Solid video, I just bought a used Rossi R92 in .357/.38 in cherry red with a polished blued 16 inch barrel. I got it for just over $400 out the door and it looks great. I will test it out at the range soon to see how it runs with some .357 or / .38 special that I have. I think that it's a great carbine style weapon that will be compatible with my .38 special revolver. I too ignore the safety, but then again, I don't keep it loaded at all.

I have a 357 /38 just like yours and a 24 8nch octagon 44 mag in blue. Had to put taller front site on 44 it shot 11 inches high at 50 yards on lowest setting but a $11 new tall site fixed that

Have owned several. 45 colt, 357mag. All were great rifles. Limit the expectations, to pistol ammo realities and team with a pistol of same cal, 50 yds-250yds deer getters or a rabbit in the pot.

Having owned both .357 and .44 both in 24" octagon bbl I would recommend the .357 only in the short carbine 16" round bbl, as in octagonal long barrels they are the same outside diameter across the flats making for a massive muzzle heaviness of an extra pound and a half hanging off the muzzle... If shooting only a short walk away from a blind or had chest/neck surgery or a petite female of course the extra weight means little recoil especially with a Limbsaver vest or lace on buttpad, barrel almost impossible to split from a catastrophic failure... and a couple of manufacturers produce +P+ 158 grain and 180 grain ammo at 2400 fps / 2200fps that duplicates 30-30 Winchester at close range.
The 24" octagon barrel helps tame .44 recoil and holds a dozen or so rounds - enough for dangerous feral dog packs or even combat.
My 1866 has an octagon barrel and that thing is pretty darn heavy. An 1874 Sharps with a 34" octagon barrel is another beast. Thanks for watching!

I had a Rossi.38/357 lever action, and when it worked, it was great. But I would have constant feed issues with either caliber, locking up the action. I tried every brand and kind of bullet, even experimented with reloads with different OAL, and still would jam. I took out the action many times, cleaned it, polished it, and while it did make the action slicker, jamming still happened. I really liked the rifle, but I could not deal with frequent jamming, and sold it. A real shame, because I really wanted a .38/357 lever action as it would be cheap to feed ammo. I'm sure mine was just unluckly, as others have had no issues with theirs. :(
I had issues with mine in the beginning but a little work to the interrupter and round nose ammo seemed to help.
Try another. Mine I got last year has had zero issues of any kind. It’s also more accurate shooting .38 special, for some reason… No feed issues at all though.
Great review on one of my favorite guns. I enjoy all of your videos. I currently have 3 Rossi 92's and really enjoy them. I use Skinner peep sights on one of mine and Skinner rails on the other 2. I've been looking for a thin leather wrap like the one you have. Did you make that one or is that something I could purchase somewhere?

You should be able to use any modern ammo in it. SASS or Cowboy Action Shooting, does not allow jacketed ammo in the competitions. Check your owners manual to be sure. Thanks for watching!

When you mentioned, paraphrasing, 'really high front sight,' I thought that might be taken as a criticism -- meaning you were going to add an observation on filing it down or adjusting the rear sight to accommodate your desired point of impact.

It's chambered in .44Magnum, which will handle .44 special, but not .44-40. The .44-40 is a tapered round and the .44 special is pretty much a .44 magnum short. I'm going to leave the front sight just as it is. I don't think it needs any modifications at all. Thanks for watching!
Great video Richard, the .454 Casull will chamber the .45 Colt, but the .454 is longer than .45 Colt, so it should not fit the .45 R92. They have gone way up in price. I paid less than 500 for my R92 in Casull. Not stainless though.

Had one some years back. Wish it worked right off the bat but it had some issue where working the lever the loading gate would pop out and jam up the rifle. That with the front sight just falling out with little to no effort left me with a poor impression of rossi quality control. Granted could have probably sent it back for warranty or a gunsmith fix it up. But it was a brand new gun.

.454 Casull would be a cool round to shoot through a Leeever action rifle. Definitely not as affordable/ available as .38 Special.

I have some more info for you on the R92. (Well, this is what Rossi told me.) They did not stop production of the R92; but it was, for reasons unknown, not placed into their "high volume" production line. I got one in SS 20" bbl during this time; and it seems to be just fine. Perhaps they keep their best rifle-maker(s) busy on his or their own "Low volume" production line.
Maybe! I'm sure production must have gotten real slow, I know they were hard to find for a while!
The safety is not needed, but it is helpful for safe unloading of live ammo

I have a stainless Rossi 454 Casull and I'm positive that 410 shot shells would be a bad idea in that rifle.

Nothing but regrets, so far with mine. Back with Rossi, as it would not feed anything reliably.
I've heard a few other complaints about the newer ones. Have you tried "round nose" ammo? That was the problem with mine.
Some of the old R92 had a way better magazine tube design. My 1990 or so 38/357 had a removable magazine tube with tube loader like on a lot of 22 lever action.
Also the tube retainer cams into the barrel bottom under the muzzle so recoil cannot dislodge the magazine.
The 454 and 44 magnum needs something like that to stop the magazine tube pulling out of the stock.

You can put a ghost ring in lieu of the safety. Get a tall front sight and the guns accurate to 200 yd w .357.

Dick, I just inspected my new R92, same model as yours, and I noticed that the head slot of the screw holding in the buttplate was scored/chewed up as if by a heavy screwdriver or power tool. Also, there were fingerprints and tiny scratches in the stainless, like you would get after months of use. Also, there was a 2" zigzag-type scratch in the steel near the feed. Is this normal, something that can occur right out of the factory that I have to live with? I fear that I was sent a refurbished gun. Also, it seems to be rather difficult to aim with the sight over the hammer. Is this normal as well?
Not sure what you mean about aiming over the hammer. If you mean with the hammer down, yes, it's a little harder to see because the hammer will be in the way a bit. The scratches and chewed up screw don't sound good. A few minor scratches in the brushed stainless steel may be normal, I have put a couple in mine with ease. But the chewed up screw sounds like somebody slipped.

Has anyone experienced chamber buildup when shooting .38 special polymer coated ammo. The buildup would not allow a .357 to completely seat into the chamber. I am wondering if the same problem will occur with lead or jacketed ammo. It was very difficult to clean the chamber. Soaked it with Hopps Nitro Solvent ( 1 hour ) then soaked in Pro-Shot 1-step CLP ( 3 hours ). I used an oversized brass brush and drill to swab the chamber and slowly removed the buildup so a .357 would chamber. Does anybody know of a tool such as a brass reamer designed to clean out the buildup so I can feel comfortable shooting .38 special again.
That sounds like a lot of buildup, how many rounds was it?
Not sure I shoot it off and on over time. It could be between 300 and 500 just guessing.
The same thing happens when you shoot .22 shorts in a rifle chambered in .22lr. It's usually powder residue built up at the end of the shorter case. There's really nothing you can do to prevent it, I think you can make it a little easier to clean up if you brush the chamber at shorter intervals. Say after every 25-50 rounds, it's a pain but it should make clean-up a little easier.

How accurate is it I'd like to know that
I never did a video on it, but I did sight it in at 100yds with 357 mag back when I bought it a few years ago. I planned on using it for deer hunting in Ohio. I guess it wouldn't hurt to do a video on its accuracy at say, 50yds or so. A hundred yards is a little far for precision with open sights. (for me anyway) Thanks for watching!

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview ive had a gunsmith look at it and i called Rossi and they said. With the .357 bullet it will bulge the casing. But on the .38 Special, it will not. Rossi said it's normal

I thought only flat points in lever action.
Although it makes sense to use flat points to minimize a chain fire in the tube, the Hornady LEVERevolution ammo is not flat point. It does have a "soft point" for safely absorbing shock in tubular magazines. Thanks for watching!

It’s a matter of degree. NCOWS (a smaller organization than SASS) places more emphasis on authenticity. SASS rules allow a broader range of gear.
If we were sticklers for authentic gear we would not allow any firearms in .38 Special, nor any rifles in .45 Colt (a late 20th Century offering). Your 1860 Henry or Winchester 1866 would have to be chambered in .44 Rimfire (no ammo produced for over a century). You would have a historically accurate organization with no shooters.
90% of the guys on these videos don’t know how to load a lever action. You obviously do. If your’re a ten on loading, I’m a seven. I have five lever actions: the new Ruger Marlin 30-30, 45-70, Winchester 1873, 24” barrel, 14 rounds 357/38 and two Rossi’s, the 24” version of yours (I like the mag capacity, exempt from CA gun laws.) and the 16.5 Rossi with 8 rounds, large loop.

You can put a ghost ring in lieu of the safety. Get a tall front sight and the guns accurate to 200 yd w .357.
