Hickok, we modeled our steel range around your idea of using shepherd's crooks from the local hardware store. They swing naturally deflecting jackets and lead downward, and the crooks are flexible allowing for even more absorption of the force of the rounds. Proper eye and ear pro is always a must. Thank you for pioneering the home rang ideas!
A bit of physics here: a large part of what prevents shrapnel from bouncing back at you is the swinging plate absorbs much of the energy/momentum of the bullet and thus it is not reflected back at you. When you shoot the coffin around 8 min in, one soda can bursts. Why? I'll tell you why: it was because that bullet impacted the coffin when the coffin was swinging back at you! All of your other shots impacted the target when it was swinging AWAY from you, which built up the stored momentum in the coffin! When the coffin is moving towards you and the bullet impacts then, the bullet's momentum is met with greater momentum in the opposite direction from the coffin, which mathematically is identical to the bullet impacting a wall that is moving towards you! This might be more intuitive if you imagine a head on collision on the road: if your truck moving 30 mph impacts a stationary truck of equal mass, much of your momentum is absorbed in the collision and the net momentum of the system after the collision is still moving in the direction as your truck was. But if instead you crash into a truck that is also moving 30mph towards you, that is mathematically equivalent to driving your truck impacting an immovable wall! If that truck you hit is now even heavier or faster than your truck, then the net momentum of the system is in the direction of the other truck, meaning you are going to have a bad day when you go from 30mph due east to 10mph due west in milliseconds.

I never really cared for firearms for the dangers of them, though I was always curious about some of the technical details of them. Now I know target shooting is a lot of fun, and defense of the common people is immensely important. But I just wanted to say that Hickock45 is an incredible teacher. A classic, safety oriented, knowledgeable man that takes a "dangerous" subject and applies common sense and teaches anyone and everyone on the proper practice. It's why a I followed and continue to watch to this day despite not even owning a firearm. He is an example of what the gun community should be about. Many of the comments here are surprisingly (to some communities) are also examples of this as I rarely see hateful and ill tempered comments. They are all about the products, safety and just sharing experiences. We are in a period where there is a divide where more guns means more violence, and less guns means more innocents killed a difficult and seemingly impossible situation to compromise. But that sweet middle ground is people with the respect and knowledge of what he/she is dealing with like a man like this. It's about knowledge and respect towards the risks of the hobby and educating about it. It's not political, it's not race or gender, or any other politics, but about the product and only about the product and expressing safety. Much respect for honest, genuine, channels like this.
Ccw holders commit the least amount of crimes on the country, lower than actual police officers. The safest states in the country are states that allow the least amount of restrictions when it comes to the 2nd amendment and conceal carry. Really makes you "wonder why" some states are super regulated yet have the highest crime and homicide rates....
Cool video, and I particularly liked the demonstration with 2 liters and pop cans around the base of the targets - that was a pretty brilliant demonstration. Years ago I used to haul aluminum out of Alcoa Tennessee that was used to make pop cans. That stuff is .004" thick, and according to Google "copy paper" is also .004" thick. Just a little trivia for you...
Hey hickok45! There's a video on youtube floating around titled 'bullets at 1 million FPS' or some such. It's a collection of ultra-high speed clips of bullets hitting targets at different angles, and it shows with very clear detail what you seem to be describing in this video here. Check it out if you have some time. Take care!
Useful info that I hadn't thought much about. I've only shot very little steel at someone else's range, but your range setup has me interested in something similar. Thanks for doing this video.
Hickok. You can tell you were a teacher in your past. Excellent learning lesson for even experienced shooter. I have been shooting mainly paper targets, cans, plastic bottles for 50 years. I learned something about steel targets. Have a great day! Keep them in the X ring!
Ice makes a great reactive target. And the cleanup is easy - just wait for it. It does require some preparation, like saving some plastic containers to freeze ahead of time. If you don't like the clear/white color, then a little food coloring can be added before freezing.
problem with stuff like clay pigeons, bottles, cans or anything like that is you have to reset the targets. metal targets you set up and can shoot all day
Too much trigger trash is made from those targets, plus having to reset them every 5 min. Steel is best, walk it out there and leave it until time to go home.
Me too! I love the big gong back on the hill, and the coffin ⚰️ I’m guessing it’s 1/4” thick on account of the ring! The thinner the steel, the louder the ring :)
I don't trust or believe most of the people I see on RUclips but hickok45 is one of those guys that I believe in. I like his commentary and his personality. 2 thumbs up my man.
Hickock, A very good episode. You made some good points. 1. Using Hanging steel is very important. 2. Using Hardened steel is also very important. What you didn't say, and I think it is very important, is that people should hang their hardened steel targets so that the bottom of the target is further away than the top of the target. That makes the splatter hit the ground just in front of the target. There are many ways to do this. If done correctly, hardened steel hanging targets can be shot safely at fairly close range. Love your videos. Thank You. Duane
Hickock - Your videos have undoubtedly changed the behaviours and attitudes of millions of shooters out there - You need to be nominated for an award for the work that you do!
I can sit here all day and listen to Hickok read the phone book and never lose interest. What's up with that? He would make one hell of a press secretary or politician.

I don't think that was a fake video. They actually show (they did when i did the course anyway)this clip to potential firearm owners here in Vic,Australia when they are discussing ricochet's.
I've been wondering about this subject myself. I made a target from a 1/2" plate and I designed it to hang at a downward angle but I still heard horror stories so I wasn't sure if I wanted to try it out.
I'm totally pro gun but also super glad Hickock and a lot of other guys put so many safety videos out because everybody should be able to get a gun but doesn't mean everybody knows how to shoot and handle them safely. I hope every new gun owner finds their way to your channel lol

I was RO at a GSSF match at our club. I was running the plate station. 8 plates @ 11yds. My truck was parked in the pit over 25 yds away from the target array. I had a tarp on the hood. At the end of the day after running a few hundred shooters on 2 racks, the tarp on my truck was covered with fragments, mostly pieces of copper jackets. They should rule out jacketed ammo at such a stage IMHO.
My son and I thank you for these tips. Range safety is an often neglected and sadly observed in hindsight after an accident. I will share your video with friends.
About two weeks ago i nearly lost my eye from a ricochet. Friend of mine was shooting at a dented up plate with his 9mm from about 20 yards came back and hit me in the eye brow. Got a black eye!
The biggest reason this channel is top notch: seriousness. It's a sport, you guys play safe and smart ... some times you play it fun ... but dont make fun of it ... cuz people that deal with a gun like it were a toy, dont belong to be near firearms. and thanks for this insight. (I got a rock back on me with a slingshot think I was 8-10 ... against two liter, maybe that's why I dont few strang about your "grudge" against them ... they are dangerous)
Posting more videos with phrases like "common sense gun safety" and "gun control" in the title while the video itself is a pro-gun video, can help bring people on the fence over to the pro-gun side. If the videos are done like this.
And I thought gun control starts with a good sight picture. Oh the pain, the pain. All those years on the range raining, snowing, blistering heat and sand in my crotch.
If the majority were as sensible and decent as this chap then there wouldn't be much of a gun control issue. Sadly it doesn't seem that way considering the gun violence and death statistics. Yes a fair bit down to criminal activity but they get their weapons down to lack of sensible storage for theft and lack of decency in some sellers. Hiscock should absolutely be mandatory viewing for all new gun owners though.
Hickok thank you for posting this video! That helped me by answering so many questions I had about shooting steel. Does one need to worry about the post you put the shepard's hook on? Does it have to me circular or can it be any post?
The stand is generally not a problem, except if you are using these for rifle targets (.308, 5.56, etc.) out there at any range, you'll occasionally cut the shepard's hook and have to replace it. Remember, these things are designed for some other silly purpose, such as hanging plants, I guess, so they are not made of hardened steel, of course. A hot rifle round goes through them like butter.
Wife and I want to move to Tennessee and build our own backyard range. Thanks Hickock. Well actually we both want to move, I want the range, but it's progress!
I have to say, I've watched tons of your videos, and they are just so informative and well thought-out. The demonstration of ricochets with the bottles under the swinging steel targets was a really effective and interesting teaching tool. I don't even own any guns, but knowledge is power and you provide it well. Thanks for this!
A friend of mine was stationed on Kodiak Island in the 60's. On his day off, he walked up a beach on the bluff. With a .223 he fired into the water at a piece of floating bark, about 30 yards away, shooting down at a 20 or 25 degree angle. After shooting at the bark he got hit in the forehead, and the ricocheted bullet traveled around his skull under the skin and stopped in the back of the skull. He drove himself to the hospital where the Dr. removed the bullet. I saw his scar and have no reason to doubt him.
Great video that covers the basics of shooting steel. The only thing I would add is that sooner or later, you will be hit by splashback. Most of the time it will feel like a pin prick. When it happens, remember to keep the muzzle directed down range and take your finger off the trigger. You are responsible for muzzle direction no matter what happens! Like with hot brass down the shirt, I've seen people turn on the firing line creating a dangerous situation. It's more about the surprise of being hit than any actual injury caused by the splashback.
Use extra caution with kiddos and steel targets. Had a bounce back while shooting with my son where a jacketed round tumbled and stopped right up to our feet. Never in my life has this happened after thousands of rounds. We had a long talk about never telling momma about this 😉. It was a good opportunity to discuss shooting safety and eye protection.
A brilliant video! Full of detailed advice from the Great Sage! I love that a good portion of the videos and advice is about safety. You're a true credit to the gun community Sir!
G'day from Australia! If possible, would love to see you review and test the Adler a110 lever action shotgun. Love your videos, been watching for years.
Thank goodness for RUclips. If you have a question about firearms you can most likely find the answer here. This video is very informative. I recently started shooting steel at 50 and 100 yards, sometimes at 200 yards when I feel like carrying steel that far. I'm about to venture into shooting steel at close range (20 to 25 yards). I kinda figured out the answers to most of my questions base on life experience and logic. But, its nice to watch a video like this one that re-enforces my beliefs on the right way to shoot steel.
My son is a drummer so I discovered how much fun it can be to shoot his old, cracked un-usable cymbals. You rounds will also pass thru them and they often make a nice splash!
Just another thing, don't stand to the side of someone shooting a revolver. Stand behind them. My brother was shooting a 44 Blackhawk and I was standing to the right of him and caught a good size chunk of bullet in the forehead. I bled like I had been shot in the head.
Chuck Sherron thanks, I was of course. It was an old Ruger super Blackhawk with timing issues. I always stand behind anyone shooting a revolver now. It wasn't just normal splatter it was a chunk of lead.
This man is the BEST representation of responsible gun ownership! As a side note, I too caught a 7.62 piece of the jacket come back into my cheek. Bled slot but nothing serious luckily!
I carry HST, but I'm okay with Gold Dot, as well. These two are universally respected by almost everybody in the firearms world as good carry ammo. There are others, too, of course, that are good.

Hickok45 for President 2020! Oh wait, he's an honest man.
Hickock45 for #46.
#45-4-45
(45 for(4) 45)
It's 2020 now...hope ur still alive
I would but vermin supreme’s zombie powered power plant is too good to pass up
Thank you for this video. There is more to gun safty then just pulling the trigger and hitting the target.
The clang is addictive. I appreciate the work you put into your videos.
More guns means less violence no arguing the facts.
Couldn’t agree more.
More people= more violence. The tools used to achieve the means don’t really have too much to do with it.
Well said.
I’m my experience, when it comes to guns, there’s more people like Hickok out there than you might realize.
I actually searched for this because I was hit by a Ricochet as we were shooting. No blood though, just a bit of a mark. Nice video and thank you.
Thanks for sharing the knowledge. This is my first year of firearm ownership and really appreciate all these great videos
Holy cow! That was a serious demonstration. Perfectly explained.
'whatever you do, life is full of risks' a beautiful quote
Cool video, and I particularly liked the demonstration with 2 liters and pop cans around the base of the targets - that was a pretty brilliant demonstration. Years ago I used to haul aluminum out of Alcoa Tennessee that was used to make pop cans. That stuff is .004" thick, and according to Google "copy paper" is also .004" thick. Just a little trivia for you...
7:15 that blew my mind. good stuff sir.
A fine example of your professional concern for the people you teach. Thank you sir.
Closing in on 4 mil subs ! Congrats man , one of the best "gun guys" on RUclips .
Take care!
Frames Per Second I imagine you mean. Just to clarify those who might read "feet per second" at first.
@@ammayhem50 that would be quite a mess
Useful info that I hadn't thought much about. I've only shot very little steel at someone else's range, but your range setup has me interested in something similar. Thanks for doing this video.
I think you have one of the best gun and safety shows out there. Thank You Sir.
Hickok. You can tell you were a teacher in your past. Excellent learning lesson for even experienced shooter. I have been shooting mainly paper targets, cans, plastic bottles for 50 years. I learned something about steel targets. Have a great day! Keep them in the X ring!
If you want cheap reactive targets that won't throw lead back: line up some clays or 2 liters.
Problem with that is they're consumable, and the cleanup (for 2ltrs at least)
Ice makes a great reactive target. And the cleanup is easy - just wait for it. It does require some preparation, like saving some plastic containers to freeze ahead of time. If you don't like the clear/white color, then a little food coloring can be added before freezing.
problem with stuff like clay pigeons, bottles, cans or anything like that is you have to reset the targets. metal targets you set up and can shoot all day
Shooting clays is fun watching them blow apart. But the reset sucks.
Too much trigger trash is made from those targets, plus having to reset them every 5 min. Steel is best, walk it out there and leave it until time to go home.
I only like shooting steel because of the satisfying "ping" sound it makes.
HybridEdits I prefer glass. Only problem is you gotta drink a lot.
@@ChristianMartinez-it6sj just buy glass jars or something idk.
Me too! I love the big gong back on the hill, and the coffin ⚰️
I’m guessing it’s 1/4” thick on account of the ring! The thinner the steel, the louder the ring :)
This guy is just simply a really good teacher
I only met my grand father a hand full of times but I swear every time I watch you I can feel his comfort!
I don't trust or believe most of the people I see on RUclips but hickok45 is one of those guys that I believe in. I like his commentary and his personality. 2 thumbs up my man.
I've always wanted to see a gun safety video from you guys. Do's and Don'ts and such.
We have done several through the years.
+hickok45 awesome, I'll try to find them, thanks!
Hickock,
A very good episode.
Thank You.
Duane
Great PSA & information from an experienced shooter. Thanks Hickok45.
Hickock - Your videos have undoubtedly changed the behaviours and attitudes of millions of shooters out there - You need to be nominated for an award for the work that you do!
Swinging targets absorb most of the energy.....Hickok you are my favorite RUclips firearm enthusiast...
I can sit here all day and listen to Hickok read the phone book and never lose interest. What's up with that? He would make one hell of a press secretary or politician.
Or a radio host
CoyoteTa81 He's the white version of Morgan Freeman imo.
i think he said he was a teacher at one point in his videos.
I'm a democrat voter by nature and I live in a liberal city in California. I love this guy. He's smart, charismatic, level headed and salt of the earth.
Reminds me of the video of the guy shooting a .50 cal at some steel and it hit the steel and came straight back and hit him in the ear muff?
Oh yeah! I've always wondered what type of round he shot
Allen- I seen that on youtube - that guy was very lucky ! !
Showed that video to someone just the other day.
Probably a fake video to earn some money on it going viral.
When I was about 14?, I shot a steel railroad T-Rail at close range with a 30-30 , having one's face Sand Blasted is not a fun thing ):
Yep, we live and learn, provided our teenage ignorance doesn't kill us. It's a miracle any of us guys make it through our teen years.
hickok45 I had a relative (even dumber than myself) fill a 12ga shell with nuts and bolts, it didn't hurt him when he set it off but the guy behind him caught a face full of wood from the gun's stock . Yes he was a teen too at the time. ):
I don't even want to imagine that...
***** Nuts and bolts are square and have sharp corners, and don't fit too well going down a round tube, have you ever seen a "Log Jam"?.
Mini bike jousting... Seeing who's dog could pull them, fastest, down a gravely road on a skateboard. Happier times.
Note to self: Invest in a kevlar cup.
I had the very same thought lol
Nah, do a proper job and go for DU instead of kevlar
@@Smokeyr67 what's DU?
Diamond Cutter deleted uranium
@@Smokeyr67 Did you know that DU isn't fully depleted? It's still fairly radioactive. Not what I would recommend to protect your boys. Stick with AR500 steel; that stuff is Hickok approved.
Mr hickok always chuckles when he starts shooting. You know he just loves it so much
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Great stuff :)
"Is everybody stupid?" For some reason, Mr. Hand's "Is everyone on dope?" just came to mind.
Sure wish there was a higher percentage of sensible guys like you walking around in society. Thanks again, for what you do.
I have my steel targets at angles facing down so the led goes into the dirt
Posting more videos with phrases like "common sense gun safety" and "gun control" in the title while the video itself is a pro-gun video, can help bring people on the fence over to the pro-gun side. If the videos are done like this.
Propaganda works wonders.
And I thought gun control starts with a good sight picture. Oh the pain, the pain. All those years on the range raining, snowing, blistering heat and sand in my crotch.
The practicality of guns is lost on those who were never properly taught. Good teachers make better students.
I'm so old I can remember when "shooting steel" was a synonym for "gun".
Theres going to a lead mine in that yard 1000 years from now they'll be recovering lead
1:10 - "Is everybody stupid? - Maybe." :D
Thank you for taking the time to make this video sir.
Can you interview the gong ?
Hickock:What is your favorite song?
Gong: *Hurt - Johnny Cash*
I think it may be hells bells 😂
I understand disagreeing with a lifestyle...But targeting swingers? I know, I know...I'm not funny...
Dry Humor would have been funnier if you didn’t admit it
Use extra caution with kiddos and steel targets. Had a bounce back while shooting with my son where a jacketed round tumbled and stopped right up to our feet. Never in my life has this happened after thousands of rounds. We had a long talk about never telling momma about this 😉. It was a good opportunity to discuss shooting safety and eye protection.
Dustin Wyatt 🙏 God Bless, stay safe brother
You often joke about how you aren't too smart but I disagree. Very professional and fun to watch. Not 'nutty' about guns like some youtubers.
A brilliant video! Full of detailed advice from the Great Sage! I love that a good portion of the videos and advice is about safety. You're a true credit to the gun community Sir!
Hey Hickok, commonsense it's different from State to State. Maybe in Tennessee it's more common the sense than Kentucky! I joke 👍🏻
He Started out with a dry t-shirt, ended video drinched in sweat. So glad summer is done for awhile!!
is everybody stupid.... maybe... lol, good video Hickok.
Hickok45 is Awesome!
I love your videos, just found them to be honest, you calmly describe guns and safety as well as describe how to avoid and fix shooting problems!
Always teaching and inspiring the world. Hickok45, you’ll live forever. 👍
G'day from Australia!
If possible, would love to see you review and test the Adler a110 lever action shotgun.
Love your videos, been watching for years.
"Flat, hard, keep a safe distance and always wear protection."
Don't shoot 25acp either! Because it will even bounce off a marshmallow .😆😀😜
Let me be the first in say you thanks for share with us those tips!
Just another thing, don't stand to the side of someone shooting a revolver. Stand behind them. My brother was shooting a 44 Blackhawk and I was standing to the right of him and caught a good size chunk of bullet in the forehead. I bled like I had been shot in the head.
That's not even possible.
If you are referring to the part about the revolver throwing lead sideways, it can happen. It's happened to me a couple times.
ballinvsxx Yes it was a jfk magic bullet.
+ballinvsxx Because it would never be possible that you were turned towards the gun and not looking down range.
Chuck Sherron thanks, I was of course. It was an old Ruger super Blackhawk with timing issues. I always stand behind anyone shooting a revolver now. It wasn't just normal splatter it was a chunk of lead.
Hey Hickok, do you flip your AR500 targets around? After about 800-1000 rounds I flip mine around to keep them from cupping and it seems to help.
I do that occasionally.
Yet another well made vidoe on firearm safety. I truly appreciate everything you guys produce! Thank you!
This man is the BEST representation of responsible gun ownership! As a side note, I too caught a 7.62 piece of the jacket come back into my cheek. Bled slot but nothing serious luckily!
Flat ,hard ,and swingeing... sounds like my ex.
"Is everybody stupid? Maybe!" 😂
Hickock 45 what is your preferred choice of carry 9mm ammo? Thanks and love the videos.
I carry HST, but I'm okay with Gold Dot, as well. These two are universally respected by almost everybody in the firearms world as good carry ammo. There are others, too, of course, that are good.
i have a follow up question. whats a good cheap house protection gun
A brand new Remington 870 Express can be had for around $325. Many brick & mortar places are offering a $50 mail-in rebate on them right now until the end of September so you can get one for less than $300 if you buy one soon.
But dont be using high power buck shot or slugs as home defence, they will be hitting things through several walls and even into neighbors houses
124gr gold dot is what he used to prefer, that may have changed since that information comes from a video about 2yrs old.
hello I am French and I love all your video and thank you for this video on the weapon fire risk as there shooting at steel targets
Can't stress the importance of this topic and video enough. Thank you!
The coffin was on the forward swing when you popped the soda can. It looked like it might have been "directly beneath" the plane of the target when you fired.
