Beňačková je stále zážitek doprovázený husí kůží alespoň pro mně....nádherný,bravo!!!
I really don't understand the negative comments regarding Benackova. She is one of the great sopranos of the last 50 yrs. Her Rusalka is still considered the gold standard of that role, and because of that, Renee Fleming paid tribute to her on the intermission of this years Rusalka from the Met. Benackova's Marguerite and Helen of Troy in the famed San Francisco production of Mefistofele, in which she tackled both roles, was extraordinary. Anyone who wasn't thrilled at her singing, particularly the high notes in the Canto d'amor, wasn't paying attention.

Kyllä se näin on. Miellyttävä ääninen ja tasokas sopraano. Tukkakin on fantastinen.
I really don't understand why there are people who just cannot enjoy the music and with such a wonderful singer as Madame Benackova. Hr beauty in vice, appearance and spirit is obvious. "little" (not the lower case) people cannot see that or enjoy it. Brava Benackova!!
Never heard a better interpretation of this great aria. Clear, warm and what a great voice. Thank's a lot Ms. Benackova ! What a wonderful performance !
Exquisite-and so interesting to listen to an opera singer who speaks Czech. The vowels and consonants are so clear, and the sustaining notes on the vowels are lovely. Her performance is almost liquid, yes, different from Fleming, but lovely. It would have been great to have a video recording of her performance in the opera itself.
I love the Subrtova performance, and the von Stade, they are brilliant. Rusalka brings out the greatness in most great singers, it is Dvorak at his most inspired. This performance, however, is so beautiful because Benackova evokes the Rusalka character. We feel her gentle dedication to the risks of love. And Benackova executes with total competence and understanding. The definitive performance.
I haven't seen this in years, but it's every bit as amazing as I remembered. Sheer tonal refulgence was always her strong point, and even if she's a tiny bit past her prime here, her technique carries her very well. That said...I absolutely LOVE the way she sounds.
Beňačková has always been one of my favorites, both in Slavic roles and the occasional Puccini or Verdi. If she lacks the shimmering beauty of Fleming's rendition, she more than compensates for her use of the language and soul of this aria.
@robertdonkers I agree! When I was a violinist at the Met, I accompanied her many times. Her interpretation of the role is unique and truly comes from an authentic place...
Gabriela Benackova is phenomenal in this aria. She is prototype of Rusalka. She exactly knows what is singing. All - used tempo, used dynamics is adequate and exact. I very like in this aria also Fleming. But e.g. Anna Netrebko´s interpretation is quite funny. Incredible colored soprano of young Gabriela is for me ideal interpration of Rusalka.
Last time I left a comment here I was given bad ratings because I called Ms. Beňačková's performance tastefully understated. This is a disappointment to me. I keep coming back, and with good reason: it is still the most tasteful performance of this aria I've been able to find on RUclips: no showboating--just great musicianship and sincerity. So I hope my unhappy down-raters were just too dumb to figure out my compliment. The alternative is they actually dislike her... :(
Thank you for your knowledgeable reply. Your point is further illustrated by Benackova's 1981 performance, which differs from this 1996 version in technique, timbre, and pitch. Yet I still prefer the later one. Technique is the only weapon with which we can resist time, and hers shows through almost perfectly in the later performance, even though time has had an effect. Benackova has the artistry to conquer time and deliver the great performance, whether in her youth or in her maturity.
Since throwing out names in order to make comparisons doesn't work well, I'll give my impression of this performance in no context but its own: tastefully understated.
Though I love this performance above all others, there is truth in your comment. I think Benackova chose to give the phrases where she addresses the moon directly a softness, like moonlight. In this way, in keeping with the meaning of the aria, she is dramatically evoking the night. The risk with this, of course, is that it gives a sense of flatness. The dramatic elements of a performance, perhaps above all in opera, make an interesting conflict with the perfection we normally seek in music.
I am Czech but I prefer Renee Fleming's golden and creamy soprano. Just saw her at Rusalka's premiere at the Met couple of days ago, her voice and performance were flawless
Milada Šubrtová, Lucia Popp a Gabriela Beňačková . The best mermaids(Rusalky). It is a question of personal preferences which one will prefer. Other singers either do not have vocal equipment or do not speak the language, which spoils the impression.
Czech people certainly understand her more than other singers but as far as pure singing in concerned, the "dreamy" singing of Renééééééé is preferable...
Beňačková je stále zážitek doprovázený husí kůží alespoň pro mně....nádherný,bravo!!!
Zde není co dodat. Nejkrásnějí zazpíváno, co jsem zde našel!
She is singing the soul of the song.

I got to see her as Desdemona 13 years ago at the Met. She was great.
So magnificent.... I'm moved to tears...
this sounds like rusalka's grandma. doesn't sounds like a young water nymph in love for the first time. thanks for sharing.
To je opravu úžasné, jsem chlap 50let a vždycky pláču - hráli to rodičům na pohřbu.
Nejkrásnějí zazpíváno, co z jsem zde viděl.

This is Act 1, so she's not yet sad, yearning, yes, but hopeful she can have the Prince's love.
Nádhera.

You know it's good when the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

And Eva Dřízgová-Jirušová and Patricia Janečková.
¿Por qué no publicas más?
She is my favorite Rusalka by a mile. I do think the tempo is a bit slow.
She's extremely good, but I do like Popp's version better. But it's great we can see both on youtube.
To patřilo jinde...
Czech people certainly understand her more than other singers but as far as pure singing in concerned, the "dreamy" singing of Renééééééé is preferable...
Hi, TalkToMe66. I meant "iheartverdi".
