Maiden of the Mini DLG and FrSKY G-RX8 vario receiver. A bit too much wind for this little DLG but a good test. Flies OK but may be too delicate for normal DLG use. More suited to calm days and gentle throws.
The G-RX8 is excellent, vario sound is delayed by about a second, no big deal but hopefully firmware updates have fixed that.

Great reveiw andrew as always.
Beautiful..Delicate but good flight time. Wish I could get a DLG sometime soon.
Still, some kid getting into DLG's would have endless fun with this, as a bridge to a better model.
Beautiful little Dlg. This Saturday my Raven 990 will be here!! Very excited.. thanks for the video
Raven will be much better than this one. At this size they are quite fragile, but get fun to fly
@@AndrewNewton well got the Raven. Been nothing but trouble
All 3 servos went bad replaced them. And I measured 80mm for cg and balanced it but just can't get a good flight. It flys different every throw!! Very frustrated. My whip it is more fun at this point
Would like to add that I have had 2 of these now and it is a good trainer DLG glider and good to learn about repairs. You will most likely land it with a bit of side slip and the tail will split just below the boom (learn to fiberglass(?)). The other good one is when the canopy slips open on launch, battery flies off, unplugs and the missle you just launched becomes a lawn dart (use some tape to secure canopy and bend wing back in alignment and re-glue)! Oh, and the silly little nose hook thing for the elevator will break off, but not too big a deal after you use a bigger screw to hold it in place. Then after you fiberglass the boom around the wing mounts and around the tail section from the rough landings (as Andrew said, it is fragile), you finally realise it's too heavy for the wing loading and retire it until the next sale and buy your second one. My first one of this has a flatter wind and am using it on the second fuselage as the first snapped in half, only I need to repair the cracked rudder (again) first.
Now you know if you want to continue into the DLG class and burn some real money or get 2 or 3 foamie motor planes instead.... GL, have fun and safe flying.
Excellent tips thanks
I keep hearing the band Devo in my head.... "Whip it! Whip it good!" LOL! I'd fall on my keister if I tried DLG unfortunately. Nice job Sir Andrew. :)
A pleasure. I have dropped the transmitter, tripped over and destroyed an old DLG....all part of the fun.
Much thermal stay up all day looks very cool
very helpful review. thank you
Thanks for watching!
Really cute little glider.👍
It really is!
1:21 even better here 1:55 is mint mate ;) just seen one down under for sale led me here researching DLG. Love flight stuff (ALL) happy flying bro nice videos always .
I would recommend a 1.5m DLG over this one, it's a bit too delicate.
@@AndrewNewton they are bit to pricey for me atm. i think the mini dlg isn't on bangood?? anymore the 7ft sloppers look great...
What would you recommend learning how
to pilot a fixed wing
?? Cheers fella thanks mate.
Nice! Bought a HK mini-DLG in their recent sale, haven't had a chance to fly it yet but looking forward to seeing how it copes with light wind sloping.
Will be awesome I reckon, but will need a smooth landing area
I'm not quite sure but I think the Hk mini got less dihedral. That's what I thought when I saw the first video.
Just got the recent one on sale, but got my first a year ago. The dihedral is much greater on the current one which I think is too much.
amazing how much flight time you can have with just one trow excellent
Yes...I wonder if a small 1s power system from a UM plane would be enough to keep it in the air...would only add at most 1/2 oz with a geared brushed 8.5x20 motor 5g and micro 5 amp esc 2g totalling 7g plus a bit larger high c lipo bat.The motor would pull 3 amp at most.
why? It's a DLG... that's the whole point, not to have a motor!
Lazarus Cause it is a really lite weight plane and would be good for us guys that like to cruise around slowly or catch a thermal like a powered glider....Question is...Why not lol.
I myself would get bored of throwing it and add a small lite weight power pod that could easily be removed on a windy day with lots of lift....Why lmao
the best part about dlg is not having to carry other crap, and the silence of the experience, where *you* are the whole launching aparatus
a transmitter and the 600mah 1s lipo i used in mine was enough for easily over 4 hours of flight; i usually called enough after around half that time, which was according to my logging altimeter at the time ~ 100+ launches - great exercise; standard launch without trying too hard was 80 - 100 feet; like golf, it's all about rhythm and timing, not pure grunt
and then you need to get good at sniffing lift
I agree! The beauty of DLG is the long, silent flights! It'd be a pity to mess it up with a nasty little noise maker!
Nice work Andrew, I thought the static Camera was very well placed...It's amazing how great your reviews are considering the video / audio equipment you are using. A friend in our Club has a DLG and I remember it getting into lift quite low down, ending in him having to force the model down and back again or it would have flown off for sure..lol.
Like to see you fit a tiny motor and prop to it sometime perhaps..?
Hmmm don't know about a motor. I might build something similar for that maybe.
Did lots of repair and beefing up around wing pylons, strengthed wing joint and rear stab mount with lightweight cloth and epoxy. It is now heavier but takes rough landings much better.Still turns left on launch and apart from right trim helping can't really see how to cure it?
Someone said to launch it at a steeper angle up. Mine is in need of repair now anyway so it's on the back burner
If your launch technique is anything like most new DLG pilots flying this plane, then the way to cure it is to learn to launch straight and with good technique. Do some research, cause there are some good articles and videos teaching proper technique.
Bought one of these at the last Hobby king sale.Tried it today,it also turned sharply left on launch.Added some right trim to correct this temporarily,it flew quite well. After several rough landings the boom cracked around the wing mounts, causing the pod to be quite loose on the boom. Also the vertical stab came loose where it is slotted into the boom.So home we came for strip down and repair ,and beef up stressed areas. The boom is certainly too fragile and the tail slotted vertical stab is very vulnerable.I think the same could be said for the horizontal stab mount although that is still holding.A little too fragile for my abilities, but it will be a bit heavier after beef up,so might work as a very light wind slope soarer.
Seems like a common problem. It would be a great light sloper
Forgot to say how much I enjoy your videos, and that you have been a real help in getting back into the hobby. Thanks very much, keep em coming..Cheers
Thanks so much. Plenty more video coming
That looks like so much fun. What about using a drone to launch it to a respectable altitude and release it?
Why not make a rail and catapult?
I love your videos. I learn so much and get so much enjoyment. Thanks for being a great Australian.
Thanks Michael, I'd try those launch techniques with tough foamies but this one would not survive
I may try to make a glider with lightweight solar panels for wings. Like a low-orbit satellite. Not sure what I would use as material, but will research lightweight materials that are easy to work with. Insert a motor and have a self launching glider that can stay aloft all day. 4k gimbal and Bob's ya Uncle.
Check out RCtestflights solar glider - ruclips.net/video/sx-PHBIEjC8/видео.html
A lightweight hi-start would be a better plan. Super light rubber and around 10 pound fishing line with a ring and streamer. The glider fitted with a hook attached about 1" in front of c of g.
Paint on solar cells has been overlooked. I think this is better than physical cells. The weight difference is astounding.

Just a little less dihedral and she would float a lot more👍 Love the way you got a camera onboard, cool view on a DLG!
That tail view is the best, specially on a DLG that launches straight up.
I had the same model about a year ago and the wing was much flatter. Got the same model again a month ago and now has the massive dihedral which I'm not happy with, but does have the cylinder throw peg. The first version had a popsicle like peg that cut into your finger if you tosed is wrong.
Looks very similar to the hobby king Raven 990 they also have a 1500mm version too if you want a mini take a look at Vladimirs ELF sold by Kennedy
Thanks Kevin, I prefer proper 1.5m DLGs
Yes I can understand thermal ing with bigger area but where the elf comes in at 95g with 2xd47 n a 2s180mah. I ve got two guys hooked at the field on the Elf. u can thermal on compost heat ;) bet it will stay in ur car all the time ;) I think his designed the snipe too ? I love the full size horizontal elv design ;)
Look at hk raven 1500
can you share your taranis programmation ?
Yes, the previous video shows the Taranis setup
I know you mentioned the roll to the left. Would that not be expected since the outer right wing is moving faster than the inner left wing on the throw! Thinking about a DLG glider, never flown one. But your videos make me want everything that you fly. Except the Boxler... 😀
That would contribute but I think it's mostly the exaggerated dihedral and no rudder to compensate. I think you would like the boxler if you gave it a chance
with the dihedral, when you release the wing you hang onto is horizontal.
the other wing is up, making it turn in. if it had rudder you could compensate but from what I saw, you were doing about as well as that model could take.
nice work.
some late thoughts. imo, the roll to port during launches was a direct result of the degree to which the orientation of the main wing was Not horizontal, at the instant of release. googletranslate
haha ye i understand but it's performing good for the money :D
I might be wrong but doesn't seem to glide well , thoughts?
It's cause he probobly is not used to the kind of aft CGs in gliders, so he put too much weight in the nose, thus he has to hold up elevator to maintain level flight, and that makes a lot of extra drag. Also, the hobbyking DLGs are a bit heavy for their size. Compare this to the Elf, which is the same size, but around 2/3 the weight. So yeah, hobbyking DLGs are strong, and I think it would be a challenge to break 'em, so that's a plus, but they certainly are heavy. I have the Raven 990. It's around the same size as the one in the video, but at 160 grams it definitely does not float! It flies fast, and if you're not careful, it can sink fast, too.
Also it's not an F3K, so you can only expect so much.
no high start might be happier
Create a launch mode with a little right rudder that should do the trick.
Cheers
Preston Shute agree, use the momentary switch and set a rudder for maybe 3 seconds, quick flick, launch and see how it goes.
For some reason it doesn't work on rudderless DLGs
Andrew Newton bwa ha ha!
Ok sorry, should have said ailerons. Hope your enjoying the summer down under. It was 8 f on Wednesday with snow in central Mississippi.
Like the receiver with the vero built in.
Hope to start flying again later next month.
All your videos are top notch.
Thanks Preston. I did exactly that after the maiden, ailerons on the launch switch and it worked well.
;)
Had one of these, lasted about an hour. The tail boom cracked, was throwing abit too hard.
Ooops
Looks nothing like a JART..!!!
Jart day will come......eventually
SwampCritter personal joke. Been trying to get Andrew to make one on his channel. Lol
SwampCritter haha that's a good way of looking at them. If you go on RC groups and find Reed Sherman and ask him very nicely he will send a plan for one. Your kids will love you for it lol.
weight is everything in these little things, so despite the virtues of the g-rx8, you'd benefit from swapping in one on the smaller and lighter options both for better cg and also loading - lemonRx featherlite is a good choice and saving the altimeter for a bigger bird
i did have great fun with the now unavailable hobbyking logging altimeter in it though
the "original" mini was rudder / elevator, and weighed in at 115gm although it needed a small amount (~5gm) of noseweight, which could have been solved by a slightly bigger lipo
that thing was great fun, but rather delicate - not however in launching, only in landings - so throw it like you stole it andrew :)
here's mine in action way back when : ruclips.net/video/p06jC9ShAyc/видео.html
still air times ~ 40 seconds, best flight over 4 minutes back when i was a complete noob at low level thermal recognition
"build" log (not that there's much to do) and review is at www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?1884351-mini-DLG-(aka-Unique-DLG)
have fun... i miss mine, but the binary 900 which replaced it after a sad crash and dog fetch (not my dog) is superior in every way for the same sixe
cheers
edit : to just see it do its stuff one flight, ruclips.net/video/p06jC9ShAyc/видео.html
but the binary 900 puts it to shame :) ruclips.net/video/evz77VOcAEE/видео.html
Thanks Ashley, great to see it can survive some decent launches.
heave ho! old boy
you'll break your arm before you break a dinky dlg on hoisting it
you may find that it gets better absolute launch height with more loft
this thing is a 9 iron, the binary is a 5, and from memory you cut your dlg teeth on the original versus, which is a lazy 3 iron :)
Excellent analogy thanks, makes sense.
What a piece of junk!
Agreed
