Videos of such high quality of yesteryears' greats like this full match are a rarity in RUclips. Thank you very much for your efforts in making this available to table tennis enthusiasts around the globe. It is a good feeling to see today Waldner and Xie battling out 30 years ago. Thank you again, janus770. Keep up the great work. Hope to see more videos of great players of the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
Este video es una verdadera joya, lastima que no tenga la cantidad de vistas que se merece, pero esos 780 likes son de personas que realmente entienden y saben quien es Jan-Ove y el cambio que llego a hacer en Tenis de Mesa. This video is a real gem, it hurts that it does not have the amount of views it deserves, but those 780 likes are from people who really understand and know who Jan-Ove is and the change he made in Table Tennis.
At 11:07, the Chinese coach Enting Xi appears. He became the men's singles world champion in 1973 by defeating Kjell Johansson in a very exciting final.
Amazing to watch how Waldner developed both the game and with it. His wins are not his largest assest but how he won it and how he constantly improved during the years. In 2010 He won the Swedish championship - 27 years later!
That's amazing... all the young generation and also the last ones from Liu Guoliang and Kong seem way better than Waldner at the same age. But Waldner defeated all of them at their prime: Boll, Samsonov, Maze, Ma Lin, Liu Guoliang...
Kong,Boll and LGL never looked better than Waldner at any age. Ma Lin and Samsonov were better teenage players but Waldner developed a lot more. Waldner was almost a midget till the age of 16 and had to readjust his game to suit his frame.
I would say it's rather the other way around - this is pre-youtube era video quality, and it was youtube which reintroduced pinhole camera standards to the masses.
Waldner already at such a young age showed the ability to adapt to the opponent's style of play and use his weaknesses. And the Chinese player stupidly repeated his mistakes.
Bör inte Waldner har vunnit första matchen där det stod 8-11? Han ledde ju med 2 bollar samt trodde man bara körde till 11 sålänge det inte står t.ex 10-11.
Hi Janus770. Great vid. In the interview afterwards Waldner mentioned something about the World Cup in Barbados. Would you happen to have any footage at all of that World Cup in 1983 in Barbados?? As a young kid I saw Appelgren defeat Waldner in the Finals
Yes. Classic Chinese penhold at the time. Just one side. Hard short pips. Smash attack. His teammate Guo Yue Hua played with a sticky inverted rubber, though.
Xie Saike is best known as the hero when the Chinese men's team beat the reigning world champion Hungarian team in the final in 1981 Novi Sad Worlds. China won 5:2. Xie was the #1 player of the Chinese lineup (with Cai Zhenhua and Shi Zhihao). Xie played matches 3, 5 and 7. Xie won all his three matches against Gergely(2:1), Joyner(2:0) and Klampar(2:1).
I am watching the match, I notice that he has very bad footwork Waldner, he played very straight hen he was a teenager, in his twenties he improvement a lot in his style (playing less upright)

Nice quality. What was their ranking at this time ?
That must be the best camera they had at that time :o
I would say it's rather the other way around - this is pre-youtube era video quality, and it was youtube which reintroduced pinhole camera standards to the masses.
LutherBlissett94 So HD quality even existed in 1983 :-/

Waldner was the true champ.
Xie was great player, too.

Wow! Waldner was once thin.
No name Think he was, what, 17?
+rired2005 -- 18 years, 2 months and 1 day.
Waldner was never fat in his playing career.Actually,he was rather skinny.
Xie changed his bat before 3rd game.

Yes. Classic Chinese penhold at the time. Just one side. Hard short pips. Smash attack.

lol da ging ein satz noch bis 21
It's so embarrassing hearing the commentator say "the chinese" instead of his name.
suppose it may be better than attempting to pronounce the name
@@dubmob151 he should learn at least try to learn it because it’s a final. Nowadays they pronounce them.
@@spacefertilizer true, if they can figure it out
