Waldner attacks Timo's backhand consistently - often a weak area for left handers.
If you play intelligently, you don't have to work that hard. Find your opponents weaknesses, and attack to those areas.
It's why Waldner had such a long career - good all round technique, and no serious injuries.

@@spaceinvader384 I grew up as a Timo fan. He was my first hero in TT when I was a child. A true gentleman, beyond being a great master of the game.
I do not know too much of Waldner as a person to be honest, but as a player he is one of the best that ever played it.
Coincidentally I chose the Donic Dotec Waldner Carbon as my blade, but because the blade is great, not because I am a Waldner fan.

@@spaceinvader384 But hiding the serve was allowed back then, everybody was doing it.
I don't understand what he did wrong at that minute. Can't comprehend what the referee is saying.

Tried head phone many times. The ref cautioned about "returning shots ON table but NOT UNDER the table". Followed those 3 scores from @3:51 to @4:37. Waldner's serve was OK (legit at the time). No penalty issued. Can't understand the caution, may be some rule before my TT era. Thanks for sharing. BTW, I am a penholder with a couple of Donic rubbers in my 10+ blades collection. Not bad combo but still experimenting. Happy TT and thanks for sharing.

@@spaceinvader384 Appreciate the sharing as well.
I used to play with DHS Hurricane 8 on the FH and Joola Rhyzm-P on BH. Now I have Donic Bluefire JP 01 Turbo on FH and Yasaka Rakza PO on BH.
I only have 2 Donic Dotec Carbon blades with this setup and a Yasaka Sweden Extra with DHS Hurricane 8 on FH and Yinhe Uranus Poly on BH.
Had plenty premade bats before. But custom is the best.
I miss playing... Still lockdown in UK.
      What blades do you have?

Big impact from JOW's well-hidden serve. Good thing that's prohibited now.

I really like how Chinese players play more respectful and before serving will hold the ball in their palm for a brief moment to make sure the opponent really is ready rather than serving all of the sudden like you see in this video

That is not a matter of respect; it is a change in rules. Notice that both Bol and Waldner serve behind their off arm, hiding what they are doing with the paddle; that is not legal now.

I like how practically ALL the tabletennis players look on their paddle like theres something wrong with it when they didnt hit the ball right.
