Waldner is the king of winning a point with the least amount of physical effort possible.
true... he seems kinda undynamic, sluggish and unmotivated xD
That's a misconception.Waldner was old and tried to save energy for next matches. His game could be pretty physical. He's the closest equivalent to Federer,a mix of touch and power.
he controlled his blocking at a level that no one else can ever reach.
@@Mischgi it's called being efficient. Try it next time you're about to win a Olympic gold medal in table tennis, just like Waldner 😉
Jean Hornstrentch!!!
No shouting. No screaming after every point. How enjoyable.
It could be boring as well. A little shouting does help sometime.
@@philippelepage3816 Agree and I love when players show emotion. Grunting is fine. But the vast majority of today's players scream so loud after each point won and that's when it becomes annoying. It's like they just won a $10 million lottery.

Fabulous match. Come on the old school, still got life in us yet.
Classic Match between the all time greats. Very much to learn
Timo: Here, i got a new ball for us, :)
Jan-Ove: NomNomNom 12:45
12:45 Waldner eating the ball 😂😂😂
lmao I also thought he ate it djsjjs
What actually happens here I’m confused 😂😂 does he just breathe warm air on the ball to warm it up?
It was a new ball and they left a mark on the rubber. JO simply cleaned the ball (38mm, not 40 and no plastic ).
Where will it go?😳
@@stephanmunz2692 ahh I see
Notice how's the video quality is great here 20 years ago
If you want to see astonishing video quality from 25 years ago I recommend the upload "Tyson vs Holyfield II". The video quality is top notch.
Thanks for this ! Pure and Rare Tabletennis, without Comment
Set in 21 pts, celluloid balls, players varying spin effect.... The good old days
You forgot the sound of the glue on the rubber 😁
@@Pir072 click, click
With trichlo in the glue ah ah
Good old days when the players were less physical and had to relay on the ball to play fast
@@rjari8578 it seems there are new players like the French brothers Lebrun that are bringing back the 90s touch with more spin, transitions between slow/fast pace, near/far from the table... Something different from the top focus feast we saw the last 20 years. I hope some day defensive players with curls may also have a chance... I never understood why all spin rubbers were always validated but as soon as a new curl or antispin is effective, it s banned
Me and my friends we still play like this
People back then hates score board graphics
Waldner und Boll - Mega tolle Sportsmänner
Tight and even game, between one off the greats against a future great!
I like the old 21 setters much more, also easier to follow whose serve it is that way.
Same here. 21 setters allow players to make more strategic play, use different kinds of serves at different time point. 11 setters is just too short.
@@cardexkezhang It was changed for a reason, to make games more exciting for audience. It is quite important, and trchnically that's kinda the point.
@@krawiec1735 to me it’s not
All the new rules created to attract new audiences have been a complete disaster in terms of fun and strategy for everyday players and I think this sport is nowadays way more obscure than it was in the mid 90s. Total disaster
12:47 the look of disgust on timo's face after Jan put the ball in his mouth. 👍
Two of my favorite player ever: i love this video!
Someone would suggest to record a version of this video commented directly by Timo e Waldy
If you haven't tried it already, try watching table tennis matches at a slower speed. It makes it so much more enjoyable seeing how the players position themselves and their paddles while competing. I personally watch at 0.25 playback speed.
Waldner attacks Timo's backhand consistently - often a weak area for left handers.
If you play intelligently, you don't have to work that hard. Find your opponents weaknesses, and attack to those areas.
It's why Waldner had such a long career - good all round technique, and no serious injuries.
But ma long work hard everytime and win easily
@@gevicemelvin6668 For now but when he gets older, I don't think he can do as waldner have achieved at his age.
@@peptom7074 let's wait till Ma Long is at over 40 years of age.
@@minhdt78 It's a long way to go, no Chinese player plays at 40 years old in the National Team.
@@peptom7074 he just proved everybody wrong, the dictator dictates!
2023 here. 23 years ago, this World Table Tennis Match from 2000 still is amazing to watch.
^^ for me it looks like Waldner didn't care if his opponent has 15 or 20 points XD he stays somehow relatively calm and catch up to his opponent points... XD
Pokerface
The back-hand of Timo boll is crazy!!
Waldner: So what should I do for the last set?
Coach: 😀 idk you tell me.
Jan-Ove Waldner is God of Table Tennis!
Aww baby Timo. Great game
WALDNER was 35 in this match.. Best player from Europe ever xD
From earth ever*
the World not only in europe.....
Waldner is only a legend. Ma long is the GOAT
Ma long >>>>> Waldner
@@yeagerist977 Dude is Ma Long even from Europe? What are you on?
Wonderful match
It was 22 years ago, timo was a young and strong player at that time.
I knew the name of Boll when I was in primary school...now I'm a Ph.D. candidate...no Chinese table tennis players can play for so long time
The Chinese play style requires more physical strength so it only makes sense
@henry t that also sounds quite true tbh
How about the name Waldner?
chinese player tends to retire when they on 30s even they still can compete in competitive games.. i dont know why.. maybe because of their country rules? ma lin, wang hao, wang li qin retire when they still rank in top 30.. also when they retire, they make way for new generation of players like xu xin, ma long and fan zhendong..
@@gab5012 it requires more mental strength actually...
Two legend
20 years ago...i am still in the middle of nowhere
2000 Sweden with oldening Waldner and Persson on the werge to do the impossible👍 both did so much insane things but i think the teamwin in 2000 was their greatest effort.should have been impossible at this point.
Great match of the "young boys"
the only sport where the camera quality didn´t improve.
Wow, that was legendary.

Young timo.. Best

Waldner was 35.

The Best.
An era where players retrieve their own ball 😅
Brawo dla dwojga zawodników naprawdę emocjonująca gra Szacunek dla Jana Waldnera i Timo Bolla któtego pozdrawiam...
J O kunde verkligen se omotiverad ut....
Timo looks so young lol
He was 19 back then
Timo did great for his age.
Nah waldner did great for his age
Fantastique..
Bravo Waldner
Waldner is a national treasure!
Notice how they did not do banana flick back then. Not even forehand flips. A lot of relatively high yossed short serves just got pushed long to fw or bk. How the game changed since then!!
Hiding the serve just removed many important informations to do a flick safely.
Look at 8:09
12:44 I thought he ate the ball!
That was quite the magic trick if he didn't 🙃
video from 20 years ago has better frame rate than today's video lol
why the serve is not changing after 2 times
?
King vs king
looks like the 80s - i'm getting old 😀!!
What blade and rubers Waldner used?
Waldner is handsome and Boll is very handsome ,they are very skilful too!
LOST INTEREST NEVER KNEW THE SCORE!! TWO OF THE MOST INTERESTING PLAYERS EVER AND I ABANDON THE VIDEO!!!
Where i live we still haven’t started playing again due to Covid.
where is that ? in Austria we started playing in may again.
I m sorry dude. I know how it is without tt
Lux
A chess match at 90 mph between 2 grandmasters
Now Timo is the old vet still holding his own against the new blood
But 20 ish years younger than Ni Xia Lian from Luxembourg who is still competing at top level.
Timo’s facial expression when Waldner put the ball in his mouth to remove the powder was funny. But I don’t think Jan did at all. Lolol
Waldner beats all the top chinese players with ease, and that means the best players in the world. But he usually have a hard time against any other countries players. It's a little weird
And as a footnote, China have more active table tennis players than Swedens entire population
Young boll was fast
Why is the stadium empty?
Waldner the demiGod of TT. The best I feel.
@Dhirar Faisal Fajri techniques change with time
Timo Bol 19yo so young
12:46 So Waldner just swallow the ball?
spin, spin, spin, yeah ...
Very damn cold
i found jason bateman/liev schreiber time traveling to watch legendary table tennis matches at 23:03
The competition at where ?
This young guy has alot of talent. Maybe he could become a good table tennis player one day ;)
He has over 20 European Gold medals, greatest German tabletennisplay ever.
Was this the game where Waldner told Timo Boll " I'm going to let you win, just serve and I will hit it any how" ?
1998 European Championships
5 serves ..I really like
Don't think Waldner shook the main Ump's hand after the game - pulled him up early for serving over the table?
Amazing too see soo many world champions in the comment who are criticising waldner!!
Hello!
Wasssssssup!
that year Timo Boll is very yong
it is 20 years ago
Different rhythm, but so interesting. It's funny how they were hiding the ball when serving.
@4:10 then reprimanded @4:15 , am I right? Waldner is very talented and capable but I've never liked his attitude on court. Cocky and too much self centered. His trade mark, as you say, is hiding to serve. What a low a act by a professional. On the other end, Timo is so gentle and polite, even after so many years playing/winning at the top level. Wish there were more players like him in future.
(I am Chinese but only believe in facts, never biased).
@@spaceinvader384 I grew up as a Timo fan. He was my first hero in TT when I was a child. A true gentleman, beyond being a great master of the game.
I do not know too much of Waldner as a person to be honest, but as a player he is one of the best that ever played it.
Coincidentally I chose the Donic Dotec Waldner Carbon as my blade, but because the blade is great, not because I am a Waldner fan.
@@spaceinvader384 But hiding the serve was allowed back then, everybody was doing it.
I don't understand what he did wrong at that minute. Can't comprehend what the referee is saying.
Tried head phone many times. The ref cautioned about "returning shots ON table but NOT UNDER the table". Followed those 3 scores from @3:51 to @4:37. Waldner's serve was OK (legit at the time). No penalty issued. Can't understand the caution, may be some rule before my TT era. Thanks for sharing. BTW, I am a penholder with a couple of Donic rubbers in my 10+ blades collection. Not bad combo but still experimenting. Happy TT and thanks for sharing.
@@spaceinvader384 Appreciate the sharing as well.
I used to play with DHS Hurricane 8 on the FH and Joola Rhyzm-P on BH. Now I have Donic Bluefire JP 01 Turbo on FH and Yasaka Rakza PO on BH.
I only have 2 Donic Dotec Carbon blades with this setup and a Yasaka Sweden Extra with DHS Hurricane 8 on FH and Yinhe Uranus Poly on BH.
Had plenty premade bats before. But custom is the best.
I miss playing... Still lockdown in UK.
What blades do you have?
Big impact from JOW's well-hidden serve. Good thing that's prohibited now.
I had no idea that, in addition to being an infectious disease expert, Anthony Fauci was also an ITTF certified referee
Timo Boll was young.
I really like how Chinese players play more respectful and before serving will hold the ball in their palm for a brief moment to make sure the opponent really is ready rather than serving all of the sudden like you see in this video
That is not a matter of respect; it is a change in rules. Notice that both Bol and Waldner serve behind their off arm, hiding what they are doing with the paddle; that is not legal now.
Look at 32:53 Waldner is the master of disguise!
Timo boll was the most good looking guy in table tennis 😅
9:44
How many were they serving each ? was it 6 and 6 ?
Had to count its 5 haha
This was the best match ever
I like how practically ALL the tabletennis players look on their paddle like theres something wrong with it when they didnt hit the ball right.
