    What really scares me is that the harvesters are shaped as spiders, puts a sense in me that the Martians knew sooo many things about us, since many people are afraid of spiders. For the first time this was the first war of the worlds series that I was actually scared of, the sounds, the deafening screams, and everyone in a panic. It really shook me!

      What horror? You already know that the main character survived since the first chapter and just a few chapters latter it is said that the marties lost the war.

    • @waroftheworlds1934
      @waroftheworlds1934  Год назад +6

      @@rapatacush3 I'd say the horror is in the broader scale of the story. For a book to get written by a narrator, they obviously have to be one of the few survivors who witness it all. But for everyone else, it's kind of horrific and fatal. Non of the big productions look much beyond the main character and the devastation that must be going on, but it is going on.
      On top of that, you have total societal collapse. Even after the Martians die, the world has been changed irrevocably, and the horrors of desperation are yet another story to tell.
      I'd say it's pretty dark and horrific.
      Though, that said, I'd agree with you that the fall of the Martians in the book (and subsequent versions) happens way too quickly and kind of removes a lot of the tension. The overall concept is horrific, it's that side of the story I'm trying to explore. I do understand your point of view of course, but I think it all depends on how you read/imagine the story and whether you consider the broader implications of what happens. There can be many takes on the story for sure.

    • @rapatacush3

      @@waroftheworlds1934 maybe in Wells' times. But for us? Well we have already witnessed such things several times. Big, nearly unstoppable machines laying waste, chemicals weapons, exodus trying to escape a conflict, charred corpses littering the streets, ill-equiped men trying to stop a stronger enemy. Europe was full of that like 80 years ago. Now i think about it, maybe the germans probably got the blitzkrieg concept from the book.

    It really was a masterstroke to set this in the 1930's. That period for years has been used to evoke a sense comforting security. A cosy interlude between Wars. Images of listening to the wireless by the fireside, pipe smoking Dads, grimy streets, jumpers for goalposts etc etc. It's almost become a cliché in dramas and TV commercials. Watching this episode, you can almost smell the coal smoke. To drop malevolent extraterrestrials into the middle of a folk memory is genius. Next episode please!

    • @waroftheworlds1934
      @waroftheworlds1934  Год назад +5

      Yes a funny period in time. It has those rose tinted glasses on it, but it was also the great depression. The wealth divide was pretty extreme... but that isn't really talked about much. It's all art deco and fine living in the memory.
      From the lower classes point of view after going through WW1, I expect this is the icing on the cake!
      It's been a real education doing this series I have to say. It can be really hard to get a solid picture of life back then. It was before TV and radio only just got going. Photos can be hard to find of specifics too. I imagine a lot of knowledge and records were lost in the 2nd World War.
      Anyways, very glad you like the setting. I kind of wish I'd set it injected into the 40's from a military point of view. 1934/35 were just on the cusp of new war machines being designed and built. The Martians certainly knew when to strike, because humanity really isn't up to it.
      Thanks for the comment and thoughts :) New episode is ALWAYS on the way... :D

      @@waroftheworlds1934 NP 1934. It just never seemed to this yank, that poverty levels seemed so dire as here. Your big strike was not in the 30's but in 1926, during prosperity. Filmwise, What would be slightly, humorous would be a peace faction among the Martians, calling for a halt on this wasteful earth conquest, and instead a civil war amongst the Martians, even on earth! Splendid 'Cinema' 1934. Please carry on.

      @waroftheworlds1934  Год назад

      @@mortimerhasbeengud2834 Oh, I think you are right. I think The US had it the worst. But there were stories from the 30s in the UK, where people would take part in dancing competitions just to get food, and they'd dance for 24 hours straight (or more!) and it was last couple standing who won. So they had (starving) people dancing and collapsing, and I think some died doing it. That sounds pretty desperate, and I think about that a fair bit given the WotWs setting.
      I almost feel guilty sending the Martians in!
      I've no idea how wide spread the depression was, but I think it's probably fair to say it heavily affected the west as a whole. But, I'm not an expert. The 30s are (annoyingly for me) quite difficult to gather information on.

The 1930s is the _perfect_ time period to adapt TWOTW from its original early-1900s setting IMO; just "modern" enough to be relatively familiar, but still not so technologically advanced as now, and of course it was when the Orson Welles broadcast was aired.

      Thanks Cosmic. I did wonder as I made it how someone familiar with the canals would find it :) Now I know! I actually did some work for British Waterways about 20 years ago, for an interactive learning tool. And so the opening shot is actually partially incorporating part of that very old model. I repurposed it and upgraded it of course, but side by side you can see they are fundamentally the same. I thought it'd be fun to incorporate some old work. I had to do a lot of research for that project I can tell you, and so I became quite familiar with the feel of the canals. I've had a couple of trips on the canals too which were great. I sometimes consider living on the canals. Big change though!

      Hey, I have a question,@@waroftheworlds1934, What did the machine do to the person at 2:41 ? I saw him dead at the other scene, but what did it do to him earlier?

    • @waroftheworlds1934
      @waroftheworlds1934  9 месяцев назад

      @@helisisl Well, the Handling machine is manned by... martianed by a Martian, and it wanted to look at a human, as it was the first time it'd looked at one up close. The Martian doesn't care that it "broke" one of them, as there are plenty about. So it grabbed one, it had a look, then threw the body aside and carried on with it's mission. The Handling machine is extremely strong, and people aren't. I think saying or showing what happened to the man is a bit graphic and slightly too harrowing. But stretched and snapped is probably what happened. His legs and arms bend in unnatural directions when slumped on the floor.
      The key part though, is that the man was tossed aside and the Martian didn't care.
      It's possible the man isn't even dead, but certainly passed out/in a coma and left to die. But he wasn't going anywhere. It's kind of dark.
      I did consider showing more, and had thoughts about the machine experimenting on the man a bit, but I felt that seeing the man left for dead said plenty enough, and the imagination can fill the rest.

    My interpretation of the end bit was that the red weed was used as this strange organism that would pierce its victims with its tendrils and harvest the humans of their blood in a matter of seconds. Which given the earlier bit of the herding gives the martians a striking amount of efficiency.
    Edit: crazy idea. But what if to incorporate the curate from the novel, you had a scene showing a sermon from a religious fanatic discussing the horrors of the martians being an act of Satan?

      The big inspirations for the series are the various War of the Worlds versions, but then a mix of so much sci fi that it's hard to nail down. I kind of fancy doing a bit of a run down of the kind of films/TV/books etc that set the tone for me doing this series at some point. I've no idea if it'd be interesting to anyone or not though.

I think the Harvest episode is a good indicator of where I am headed. But the more moving pieces you add, the more you have to move them about and make them work and have a logic.

      Thank you most kindly for your lovely comment :) We'll find out more about the spires (I call them spears) in the future episodes, so i won't spoil it. They kind of grew out of the original idea I had for the Martian cages (which i actually scrapped after a fair amount of work, as they just weren't right). But they kind of grew to be more aligned with where I'm going with the series. So, all I can say is that the spires/spears are derived from the cages, but I'm unsure yet if they have actually replaced that concept and are now in fact something separate and unique, but they will tie into future episodes for sure.
      Actually, it's going to start getting interesting the more time goes on. I'm going to try and push the concept of the book (and the other versions) as far as I can, but without losing total focus on the themes. Also, I'm really glad it fires the imagination. Exactly what I want to do :)
      Anyway, the next few videos are all going to be pretty fun and action packed. The next one is already underway, though I did have to take a bit of a break as the Harvest video took way longer than I liked and nearly burnt me out. But back on track now!

    This is slowly but surely becoming one of the best adaptations of wotw. But I have two questions. 1) is the heat ray fired from the cockpit of the handling machine where the martian is seating? 2) are the tentacles used to grab Humans organic or mechanical? Another great episode well done!

    • @waroftheworlds1934
      @waroftheworlds1934  Год назад

      Thank you :) I'm really glad you're enjoying it.
      As for answers:-
      1) Kind of, it is fired from the left hand side of the Martian cockpit (from the Martians point of view), the small heat ray also has independent rotation, so it isn't bound to the exact orientation of the Handling machine and has a wider range.
      I'm hoping to do some images at some point, diagrams or cutaways of the machines for a proper nerd out. Now that everyone has kind of seen them, I can start to share a bit more. I'll post something about that when I get to it! There are so many things I'd like to do, but my resources are me, and most time is invested in keeping the videos in production (and trying to pay the bills).
      2) The tentacles are mechanical/technological. The Martians are very much intuitively connected to the machines, and the mechanisms on it reflect what is most natural to them, much in the same way as we'd create hands for us to interface with if we were controlling a humanised robot avatar. Tentacles are what the Martians know, and so that is their primary extension.
      I have a fairly solid(ish) idea of the scope of the Martian technology, and try to keep it in the bounds of what would be probable or possible, but I also have to make some leaps in what might be possible if you were a species several thousand years ahead of humanity. Considering the Martian backstory and reasoning for everything happening is a major rabbit hole that i often have to go down when deciding what is happening.
      Anyway, I'm going very much off track, but yes, essentially the Handling machine tentacles are very much technology, but that isn't to cancel out the idea that there is a bio-mechanical aspect to the Martian technology. Though I'm ahead of the audience, I have to say that I'm still learning about my Martians as time goes on and questions are raised.
      Trying to keep them cohesive, reasoned, logical and realistic is a big challenge.
      Way more info than you asked for, but there you go lol. Well done if you made it to the end! Thanks again!

      Also, yeah, I looked up what was going on with it, but only the most ardent historian would make a big deal out of it. Besides, this is an alternative timeline, so who is to say that such details weren't slightly different in this one!

    1:08 That sound is fucking nasty. Nothing beats "ULLLLAA" in my opinion but damn that's terrifying. Its a combination of the menace of the 2005 horn and the alien otherworldly "ULLLA"

    i am astonished about your efforts being put into these types of animation!
    its impressive, horrific (by that i mean from the points of human view, it is terrifying) and pretty cool
    i know one of the channels who makes the animations based of 1906 war of the worlds
    but this is also a masterpiece too!
    infact i actually like the efforts you put into it, everthing is pretty well done, even for a very small channel of only close to 2k subs
    i was once an animator of roblox studio of making content about size comparsons and things, getting to 500 subs
    you should get more, you get 1 additional subs!
    thanks for the content, might aswell bring some popcorn
    also why is there alot of lasers outside my window?

      Thank you Marina that is much appreciated!
      Yes, the 1906 inspired version is totally it's own thing and i love that he is doing that series. @kevinmccullen1.
      It's quite unique and it wasn't until a few months after I started mine that I even became aware of it.
      Interestingly, I think we both use Lightwave to make our different series.
      Thankfully our tone and approach is totally different and there is plenty of space for us both. Maybe one day we'll do a crossover and make our Tripods fight each other lol (after we've both finished our series anyway!).
      I'm actually wondering about doing a kind of regular extra video series which is part "behind the scenes" and part chance to talk about War of the Worlds, other versions of it and what I like in them, and highlight other peoples series (like Kevins).
      Also talk about a few films, directors, animators, animations, artists work and things that have influenced me over the years, and which have shaped this series. I also want to talk about A.I. and art, because I have some deep thoughts on that, and it's an interesting time to be alive.
      I don't think it would have much of an impact on production of the main series, but it might be a good way to make content more regularly that people would enjoy.
      Just thoughts right now. Do you think that would be something you might watch? I'd obviously make it as fun and interesting as i could.
      As for subs, I didn't really expect to get more than a couple of hundred subs when I started and was very glad of them! But 2k in a year, I'll take that happily! And thank you for subbing yourself :)
      As for the lasers outside the window... I do hope you have a shovel at hand, you may need to start digging in the opposite direction. :D

      There are lots of things I'd have liked to have done, but it was already getting very complicated and slow to render. I reached a point where I just had to go with it, or it'd never come out However, I do intend to rework some parts of it for the compiled final version, so I'll be sure to add a bit more reaction. Cheers for watching and your thoughts! :D

    What are the handling machines doing to the poor fellow they picked up? They didn’t stab him with anything, so I have to assume they were retrieving the blood from his hands and shins, if so that is a really inefficient manner to do it
