That was super interesting, you'd never think that a song that sounds so "simple" has something this amazing going on. Also you're a beautiful man and the dinner plates made me lol
Oh for sure. There are little gradual tempo fluctuations that happen all over the place, but the sudden tempo changes all fit to those relationships. It's simultaneously calculated and organic
Really cool observations, always paid attention to their tempo changes, but this is really excting, going into the main riff, and everything gets into gear, and these shifts are propelling it along, love it
@@alexrockwellmusic First heard this song at 21, when it came out, and I had never ever noticed how they did this, and that this was actually a metric modulation 👍
Fantastic explanation. I've been struggling to compose with metric modulations and have the result sound natural. Side note, a tool called Beat Scholar has been instrumental in visualizing complex metric divisions for me. I'd love to see someone with your background analyze some of the complex rhythms it spits out. Many thanks!
Amazing video man. This deserves more views ! Listened to the song a million times, even played it on stage more times than I can remember, but never figured this.
@@alexrockwellmusic Man I found your stuff through instagram reels, and I'm so glad I did. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this type of content! As someone who's done some basic music theory before but is not really knowledgeable at all, this type of content is really helpful :)
My guess is this, band plays intro, Zack comes in with his killing in the name of, with aggression,so band says it sounds awesome when we pick up speed.
3-3-2 is like 4/4 pretending to be 3/4. Meanwhile, triplets x4 (shuffle) is like 3/4 pretending to be 4/4. I've begun composing music (mainly with the piano), and I default to using either one of these two rhythms, because they come automatically. However, I haven't tried combining the two rhythms into the same song; it is usually a case of one or the other.
Interesting take. There are some blurred lines when it comes to hearing meter. Like hearing triplets in 4/4 as a really fast 3/4 where each beat of the 4/4 is a full measure in 3/4. It can be ambiguous for many people, but there are ways to rule out which it is.
The Surveyor - Smith & Mudd ruclips.net/video/QqrZSDK59lk/видео.htmlsi=39S-vBggM6Yc8szz&t=270 when the drums enter, the arpeggio stays the same but it shifts from a triplet feel at 146,66 BPM (or a fast 3/4 at 220 BPM) to a kind of clave at 110 BPM. Same ratio as in your second RATM example
So technically you also have an “irrational” time signature here. The last bar with the triplets in the intro is technically a 8/9 time signature. Haha, neat stuff.
I wonder if for an actual meter modulation there's an example in Master of Puppets. According to the tab I follow on Songsterr, the main verse apparently modulates between straight 4/4 and then into 21/32 for a bar. Maybe check that out!
There definitely is, I'm just not sure off the top of my head how it all works. Metallica does that kind of thing all the time though, especially in their older stuff.
Good video the only thing is Rage against the Machine was far from that. Morello being from an elite school to begin with... Overall they disappointed myself... Not that they would give a f*ck anyways or it makes a difference. Either way well produced video

Haha I appreciate the compliment
So glad I saw your video. Thanks for the effort it's brilliant
Thanks a lot!
This thing was all cut to tape, not in a DAW. The bpm is gonna gonna be all over the place. That’s what makes it good!

@@alexrockwellmusic This whole album was recorded live in front of an audience, it's pretty amazing.
Thanks! i was looking for more examples of metric modulations to teach my students
I try to keep lists of songs that contain examples of different musical devices for the same reason. This one was under my nose forever.
I really enjoyed this! Thank you!

A bit late to the party but this is a very succinct breakdown that I never really thought about until now. Well done mate.
Really great video, super interesting and I love how you simplified the concepts and the math.
Thanks a lot!

Possibly. Who knows? I'm not so concerned with how they came up with it.
Great video - you deserve more views!
