Ken Burns did a documentary about country music, and the grueling schedule those people faced those decades ago before jetliners were a thing. Of course, even now those who have small acts don't get to be flown around. Some friends of mine where in a band, and it is a shame that interpersonal conflict got in the way because they were truly talented.
There was a band playing at the same bar, one that later met with success, but at that time it was not at all guaranteed. I grew up in California, and as such was not unaware how heartless the entertainment industry is, but nonetheless it as a shock to me that these guys are traveling around in an old Dodge van with their gear who are lucky if they get to sleep in a flea bag motel but more often sleep in the van itself when their manager shows up in a Jaguar (likely from the best hotel in town), hugging them and saying how much he loves them. So many show business people are so phony.
I hope you are at least planning your touring route efficiently. One thing that got Buddy Holly all those decades ago is that they were zig zagging across a number of states across the upper midwest rather than going to nearby cities in an arranged way. This ran them ragged, many of them were ill from all that, and led to the pressured decision to fly in inclement weather when they should not have.

One the hazards of self funding a tour is living on the edge of bankruptcy!! Top it all off with the stressors or running it all and then getting sick is a true test! Add recording it, editing it and uploading it and has to be a really big load to carry!! Your efforts really are appreciated Mary. Thank you for doing what you do in every aspect. ❤

JohnnyTorontoEh sums it up exactly! Please do take care of yourself! It would be great if you could do some dates on the other side of the "Pond" but, with all the work you have to do so far, it would seem an even bigger stressful situation to do that.

Mary... You are human... you are allowed to be tired, sick, and/or unfocused. I know you don't have a minute for yourself... but find a second - here and there - and breathe in the magic you create. Feel the music in you, and let it fill your heart and soul. You're good, you're great, you're awesome! The tour is the tour. You are Mary and so much bigger than any tour.

Your intros to all these tour vids, where you give info about the town you're currently in, makes me realise how much I'd love to see a TV series which is you doing a travelog style show of going to a town and going in to the history of it, what it's famous for, it's environment, musical history notes and notable venues and their history etc which then ends up with a clip of a song or section of a song from a gig you performed in that town.
it's likely a pipe dream but it's a show I'd watch as I've been learning about places from here but I want more and there is also something way too soothing about your voice.

  • @scott2836
    @scott2836 Месяц назад +8

You speak as it should not be stressful somehow because this is not a "big" tour. But it's a big tour if you haven't toured before. And if it were a "big" tour, there would be people who would be taking care of many of the little details that you are concerned that you are missing / overlooking - that would be their job, So being stressed was probably inevitable, and being sick was likewise probably going to happen. I'm glad that it didn't seem to knock you down (or at least that you got back up again...). Thank you for sharing these vlogs - it's so amazing to participate virtually, especially from across the pond, and to get to hear your thoughts on how things are going.

This shows what separates the people that like what they do from those that love what they do. You have to love your journey to fulfill your life's passion, even though a majority of the time, it sucks. Especially what you are doing, self funded, and you are the literal corporation, and the human glue to keep going and make it successfull.
Keep it up, if it's hard, then you know you're on the right path. If it was easy, we could all do it, instead of just dreaming of it and living vicariously through you! ❤

    Hello Mary,
I just wanted to send a quick note to encourage you to stay focused and keep giving your best during your tour. You've worked hard to get where you are, and your dedication shows in everything you do. However, don't forget that maintaining psychological balance is just as important as achieving your goals. Make sure to take moments for yourself, breathe deeply, and stay grounded. Rest and self-care are not signs of weakness, but essential elements to sustaining your strength and creativity.
Remember, it's not just about reaching the finish line, but also about enjoying the journey along the way. Your mental well-being is the foundation that will support your success. Keep going, stay positive, and know that you have everything it takes to handle both the challenges and the triumphs ahead.
Take care, and keep shining! Creating from Brazil!

I was lucky enough to see you at The Brude and I didn't realise you were feeling under the weather, it certainly didn't show in the performance. I have to say the point about touring being gruelling really is so very true. I toured a lot in the late 80's and early 90's (inc playing Brudenell many times) and you do end up in that weird bubble separated from reality. Touring is not for everyone either. I admit I loved it, loved every second but it took its toll of some of my bandmates but we were too caught up in the music and of course the constant partying back then (no internet to distract us from the fun!) to notice. But we all survived. Just!

So here’s the thing, when bands go on tour in the cosy world of studio management, you don’t have to do the VLOG, accounts, washing, packing, setup etc etc. Shoestring is the toughest way to do anything and this sure looks it. Well done for sticking with it. Those two hours mean so much for the people in the audience, so thanks for all the entertainment. ❤

Such an honest reflective vlog. I don't know if statistics exist for this but my passion for mixing, recording, photography, being a Hobby musician has led me to befriending at least 20 individuals who were either Professional solo Artists or part of a Band for 30+ years but only one of the 20 now enjoys a decent Pension and a standard of living that allows them to enjoy retirement along with several high quality Guitars, home studio recording gear, cameras camcorders and want for nothing and that one person is the one who chose a career in I.T. Technical support instead of the performing arts. Sadly many of those I befriended have since died of poor lifestyle choices and rigors of playing and touring year in year out before reaching retirement age and those that have since reached that age have had to find part time jobs just to survive, never mind enjoy the good life. Making a living from Music that will also provide a decent standard of living once retirement age is something many may never think of until its too late. Hope your feeling much better soon and look after yourself.

The hardest part of this business is getting to and from the gigs, performing on stage, not a problem, that's what many bands say. Listen to Francis Rossi, he maybe a lot older, but he speaks a lot of sense, and he's a great guitarist !

My band just played a 3 hr gig with everybody sick, except for the lead singer. I feel for your struggles. Get well.

Looks like you're going to be feeling better, and I doubt you'll have any "bad" shows. Keep on strummin'. Best of times to you and your band mates! Looks like FUN! Don't worry... paydays will keep on coming too!

I hope you feel better soon Mary. I remember working in Leeds about 10 years ago. I liked the city. Sorry about what happened with your guitar. The new guitar looks good too!
