  • "You can do so much damage if you can understand the relationship between these lines." Another quick lesson from Jim Lee on critical anatomy lines. I would have liked to have seen this idea expanded on but just planting that seed is incredibly valuable. Make sure you pay Jim a visit and subscribe to his Twitch channel so you don't miss out on your chance to learn drawing tips and win your very own sketch. Content in this video was acquired from / jimlee with the permission of Jim Lee.

    Jim Lee is my favorite comic book artist of all time. My first comic book was X-Men #1 (2nd regular series) with that famous pull out cover of the X-Men fighting Magneto that he did. His incredible artwork got me into comics, though I did already like superheroes in general. Seeing these videos of him drawing is amazing. He's a great teacher as he draws as well. These are better than those expensive master classes you can buy.

  • @LazarusSchell
    @LazarusSchell 6 лет назад +62

    Do understand that Jim is giving a shorthand, and one based on his 30plus years of experience. Failing to actually understand what these muscle/anatomical groups are, and how they interact with each other will give you bad results regardless... There is no substitute to drawing from real life, or at least serious photo references.
    Another really great resource to use is "An Atlas of Anatomy for Artists" by Fritz Schider. it not only includes accurate anatomical diagrams, but also plates from classical and renaissance resources. It will help you understand Jim's diagrams and shorthand all the more.

    • @SalTarvitz
      @SalTarvitz 6 лет назад +2

      Lazarus, do you think Jim Lee learned by going to anatomy class in the 90's or do you think he just studied how past greats like Jack Kirby drew and then created his own style.

    • @bamensanders8407
      @bamensanders8407 6 лет назад +3

      +B I feel you and all, (I'll likely never do live anatomy drawing) but the stuff in this video is really no better for you artistically than a "how to draw comic book heroes" paperback from the library. Trust me, I know its a pain but knowing where important things connect *exactly* is going to save you SO much headache. Once you know that THEN you can start worrying about form and style and actually draw stuff from your head. Unless of course you were planning on rationing a couple of poses that you've memorized with relative accuracy.

    Look at anatomy books, study the groups of muscles, how muscles extend and contract, and especially draw the muscle fibers. Just doing the tedious task of drawing the muscle fibers makes you stare at the anatomy long enough to see how everything function.

      ikr. David Finch said, "I couldn't care less what all the muscle names are, as long as it looks cool." He said this in his drawing tutorial on his website. You have to pay to get the whole thing.

      I wouldn't call it a "flex", it's more like learning the names of different blocks you need to build with. Is it mandatory, no, but it helps with memorization.

    I don't want to discourage some aspiring artists, but you need more than these lessons to draw a body from memory. I've seen some guys draw perfectly anything without ever taken a single lesson...Jim Lee is one of these born artists, and he improved his skills by working in DC comics. Humankind had always artists, just watch the caves drawings where you can still see drawings of animals as good as today's, and they had no pencils, no paper, no art schools, no You Tube... ;)
