I would have killed to have stuff like this when I was in highschool and was basically not learning things I needed to because my highschool art teacher was an abstract painter and shit at drawing, it really killed my progress over the course of highschool and turned me off to going to art school, and I got a computer science degree instead. It's nuts how much I improved even in my 30's, getting back into drawing simply due to youtube videos. Seriously, my HS art teacher was like anti illustration. We sculpted, painted all sorts of shit but no sketching/illustration.

A trick I did early on to help me out was to literally draw a faint, miniature little light bulb wherever I wanted to depict my light source coming from. It's great for consistency and you don't have to imagine what the cast shadows might be as much.
At the end, of course, you can go back and erase it. Again, it's a great little tip for beginners to help maintain consistency with their light sources.

his sketches look better than your finished drawings because he knows his proportions anatomy and structure, and that's one of the most important aspects of a good drawing. No finished drawing will look good without decent structure, and being able to do that easily just comes from lots of practice and study. And great videos like this are very helpful in that regard!

@@thatunicornhastheaudacity I agree. Something that many beginner artists don't realize is that all those great artists have had a HUGE amount of practice and so they gained experience from it. Usually people don't realize that unless they reach a certain level of skill/confidence and actually dive deep into it, which is the reason why many people just give up completely from the first few tries.
EDIT: I was (and kinda still ?) one of those people.

To all of you watching the master and crying about your doodles:
Helps if you remember that Jim Lee was sitting in your position, looking at his favourite artists' work, and then crying over his own doodles. And so day after day after day after day, to this very day and onto tomorrow. Jim can look back and say, "I have made progress", but I doubt he will ever say, "right, I have achieved perfection", because if he said that, he would never do art again.
An artist must be dissatisfied. Stay focused and chase the dragon.

Hi! Excellent lighting tutorial! Who has time to read a Lighting Chiaroscuro Book these days? Was curious as how the heck did Artist Jim Lee stop his Permanent Black Sharpie Marker from "bleeding thru" onto his other superb artwork underneath? Is he using that fancy strong illustration paper made from ground stone?

I saved this video to watch later, I'll have to remember how the shading works, but I don't want to blackened all the face out I'll do it with pencil shading the direction of where the light is setting maybe a circle of where the sunlight maybe as example of where the shading should be.

Amazing art you are a breathtaking artist your videos are better than my art class I totally get what you talking about and now I feel more confident about what I’m going to draw next hey also one question with like color light where exactly in the face does it reflect from for example your holding your phone up to your face in a dark room where and how can I draw light like that?
