Toxic as their relationship was, she was his sister, his friend, his playmate, his lover, his protector, his soulmate. They couldn’t bear to be apart. That kind of attachment is rare and almost always potentially destructive.

      This!
I feel as though so many people, when criticizing Cathy and Heathcliff, step over how Cathy was the only one who treated him as though he was worthy after the death of their father. Without her, Heathcliff truly was alone.

Isabella,Harerton and Nelly tried to reach out to him and tried to be his friends but he shunned them, So how can you say that? Besides he was always a loner, and was even more of a loner after Cathy died
And it wasn't their fault for Heathcliff rejecting them,it was his FAULT!... you have to remember also that Cathy and Heathcliff were very selfish, narcissistic, self serving individuals, who cared about nothing else,or anyone else, but themselves and for each other and the hell with everyone else, sorry but that's just the truth,so you can enjoy the movie, and book, but you also have to accept it with all of it's flaws.
Now Heathcliff could've have tried to go on and be happy, like everyone has to be he chose not to.

@@shannonhughes203 Also I might also add that Mr.Earnshaw gave Heathcliff quite a privileged upbringing,he brought him in from the streets into his own home when he was starving, gave him nice clean clothes, and an education, and it was mostly Hindley who was always jealous of Heathcliff because he couldn't never measure up as a son,and after Mr.Earnshaw died that's when Hindley's wrath was poured out on poor Heathcliff and he made him a servant and became a horrible drunkard.

I adore Wuthering Heights and I love this version. However, it is important to acknowledge that their relationship was toxic. Heathcliff is manipulative and borderline abusive. Cathy treats her husband terribly. Of course everyone should enjoy this and think the chemistry is spicy. Yes, it is romantic but make sure you realize how poisonous their relationship is

This, in my humble opinion, is the best version of Wuthering Heights!
All the others were good, but a few versions didn't include the second part of the story!
Tom Hardy is a phenomenal actor! I actually got a pain in my heart, and immediately started to cry uncontrollably when Tom Hardy screamed as Heathcliff fully realised Cathy was dead! At that moment, it was as though his soul died of grief and torment, but his body remained alive!
It was a shockingly heartbreaking scene!
Charlotte Riley is my favorite Cathy! Of course, she also is an amazing actress! She, brilliantly, captured the beauty, wildness, and fragility, of Cathy in her superb performance.

    • @pollyanna8061
      @pollyanna8061 10 месяцев назад +5

That's why it was a scandal by the time it was first published; because it didn't portrait a romantic, idilic, and good morality love story, so in vogue on those days; instead, it shows how destructive and toxic can be an obsessive relationship between two strong temperaments, when pride and vanity and immaturity interfere on decisions that we can make for a lifetime. There was love between Cathy and Heathcliff, I do believe so, but wasn't a kind of a salutar love; they loved each other as much as they hated each other, also, because of the mistakes they both did, mostly motivated by hurted pride. Sometimes, when we're deeply hurted, we do stupid things in the name of revenge. And that's a real thing that Emily Brontë tried to show in her romance, that love isn't always such a fair, plain, clean game; sometimes, can turn into a dark macabre game of strength between two broken hearts! That was a shock to the conservative and make-believe rules of the society by the time; how does she dare to show how cruel can be the reality? Anyway, I can't avoid to feel tears in my eyes for them both, this is one of my ever and forever favourite romances and to see the madness growing in Heathcliff after Kathy died, always make me cry, his end was so sad!

@@pollyanna8061 I have lost count of the number of times I have read "Wuthering Heights ". Read it first in High school and thought it was the greatest of love stories. It wasn't till I got considerably older that I began to view the story and the characters very differently.
Your analysis was very good. How "dare" indeed does Emily Bronte have the audacity or even the knowledge to show us "how cruel can be the reality" ......of a total obsession with another human being.
I agree completely in all that you have said. The relationship between Cathy and Heathcliff was one of passionate love and yet one that encompassed a good deal of loathing to the point of antipathy and utter disgust.
I don't think the book was well received when it was first published, no doubt for the reasons that you outlined.
For me personally I couldn't help but wonder about the author herself. I wondered if perhaps Miss Bronte could have had a deep fixation with complex characters and the sometimes dangerously horrid and morbid pathways they can embark upon.
In any case the novel has become a literary classic and as far as I am concerned it is a Masterpiece in English literature.
Thank you so much for your reply, I enjoyed reading what you said very much. You have a good day.

He finds one thing that he is so strongly bonded with; one person who makes him feel, passion and love, makes him feel human, what he's never had before. And then that too is taken from him, love itself betrays him. He lashes out and begins a downward spiral that he cannot escape. He is as much a victim of his rage as is Catherine or Henshaw. Your video made me cry so much, especially at the part where Heathcliff finds out about Cathy's death. Tom is such a good actor.

@@sandrastone5847 I have. I have done in real life what the fictional Catherine Earnshaw has done when I dumped an ex who both wanted to marry and love, but I chose to reject him and told him that I was never coming back to him and to find someone else or learn to be alone. I asked for his forgiveness and when he forgave me, then I left him permanently. I kept my word - I never have nor will go back. It took eleven years of facing the pain and heartbreak before I was able to cope with and move on. I credit God for giving me that strength to persevere and to my surprise, I met another man whom after dating for over a decade, I finally married him - Frank, my husband. I couldn’t be more blessed to have found him. So yes, I do know what it’s like to have been in Catherine’s shoes. Catherine was a selfish woman to not have moved on.

Have never heard of this version before, thank you for uploading. I have long wanted to find a version I could like. Both Olivier's and Finnes' Heathcliffe was so unrelentingly cold, cruel and predatory, I could never find a way to care for them or feel any pain for them that many do. This version seems to have struct that careful balance.

Tengo curiosidad... Espero que no te sientas obligada a contestar si no quieres. Pero si lo haces, gracias.

    • @user-vc7po3mw6e
